Was it right to drop Ahmed Shehzad from the Pakistan squad for the ODIs against New Zealand?

Sad as it may seem based on his recent performances - but the fact is that other better players exist!

Good decision. He has been on fire in domestic cricket but mediocre in ODI's for a long time. I don't mind him staying in the T20I squad but won't be disappointed if he's dropped either.
 
Well we dropped Shehzad but picked Imam and Azhar so we aren't missing out on much.
 
I really want him to come good but I really don't see his game improving much
 
Yes he has to earn his place with a series of very good scores. Shouldn't be included till summer next year to teach him.
 
Yes. He’s probably gonna be included in the T20 squad and if he performs there, then maybe he can work his way back. By this is definitely the right call by management.
 
Feel for him as he performs in domestic cricket. Some people are just not made for international cricket.

He has made centuries in difficult conditions against attacks consisting Steyn, Morkel, Southee etcetera. Scored a century in every format, the only Pakistani to do so. So the talent has always been there. However, he just never got to kickstart his career. People will blame strike rotation, technical faults, mental faults or him hitting into the fielder's hands, but the sad truth is out for all to see.

Would keep him in Tests and/or T20s as a back up. Need to get over him in ODIs, that is his worst format.
 
Is Shehzad the cricketer who a few years ago was being compared with Kohli on this forum, with many rating him a much better prospect than Kohli?

If memory serves right, someone had posted pictures of the two players and commented how much Shehzad resembled Kohli in the looks department.

Am sorry, if it was some other player and not Shehzad, but i recall the frenzied adulation that young Pakistani talent generated on these boards. I have not been keeping myself uptodate with the cricketing world, but for intermittent peeps at pakpassion. Hence the question.
 
It's a good decision to drop him. He just serves no role, Azhar is a more reliable and sturdy option for that mold of a player and Imam looks more trustworthy already, you just know what you'll get with Shehzad I'm afraid: 10 from 22 then a slash outside off against a half volley with no foot movement and a faint edge. We need to move on to more promising players like Sahibzada who deserve a go, not the same Umar Akmals and Ahmed Shehzads who've rendered years of investment void through bad attitude and ability stagnation.
 
I will take Shahzad over Hafeez(without bowling) and Azhar any day. He has everything in his armoury except confidence which cost his down fall. Team management to be blamed for not giving him the level of confidence by dropping him time and again.
 
Totally justified, what would be more concerning is if they bring him back in the near future. However, knowing PCB he will still be tried every other tour only to see him fail.

Azhar, Imam and Fakhar our best options currently and after the PSL those names are likely to change. If players such as Sahibzada Farhan have a good PSL they will probably make it into the national side. After that no need for Shehzad
 
I think we should also permanently get rid-of Ahmed Shazad, Wahab Riaz, Akmal brothers & Muhammad Hafeez.

We have so many competitive / talented players, so there is no need for Ahmed Shahzad any more. Opening pair of Fakhar & Azhar delivered very good success in the Champions Trophy. So after that we should continue with the same "tested" opening pair, no need to "adjust" Ahmed Shazad in the team.

Hafeez should also be dropped from ODI team as we have good players like Saad Ali, Saud Shakeel, Hasan Mohsin and yes the left arm pacer - Mir Hamza

Extremely Sorry to say that PSL is the criteria for you to "judge" the batsmen for ODI format. Isn't it pathetic ?.. PSL is nothing but a T-20 entertainment to generate Revenue, just like IPL. You can get talent for T-20 but not for ODIs.

For ODI talent, Quaid e Azam trophy, National One Day Cup, Under-19 World Cup are the best possible sources.

It’s not a platform to judge. It’s the platform where players that us fans like the look of from the domestic circuit are given the platform to perform. Once they perform, the board doesn’t really have any excuses not to select them, which is a massive issue in Pakistan generally. We all know who are the best domestic performers but the PSL is where they are given the exposure they require to break into the national squad.
Also PSL talented once selected for T20I can also be picked in other formats if they perform I.e. Shadab, Fakhar, Rumman, Hassan Ali etc. So the point is still valid.

You are mistaken, though PSL performers like Hasan Ali & Shadab really performed well in ODI side but yet PSL is not the format to make into ODI side. So isn't IPL or BBL or BPL. These franchise cricket can only give you players for T20 cricket.

ODI is not all about slogging or power hitting. It is also about batting temperament, strike rotation, occupying wicket for longer period of time. Such things can not be judged through T20 franchise cricket like PSL.

What if the best domestic players can't get contracts in PSL or what if they won't perform in PSL ??? ...

We have lost so many big names from the domestic in the past, those players could have been proved quite big assets for Pakistan Cricket but we lost them due to many reasons of ego, negligence, politics within the PCB, favoritism by the management / coach, etc etc.

I won't take their names because then this discussion will be uselessly lengthy.

Its news that many of us PakPassioners have been waiting to hear for a long time. We need to get off to a quick start during the first 10 overs in NZ especially with there small grounds, with Fakhar we could see this but with Azhar & Imam it won't happen as both will look to get themselves in and take there time. With the way Shehzad plays it more of taking your time and trying to play unorthodox shots which lead to his dismissal.

Of course it was right. The man has no business playng international cricket. Ironically, being dropped from NZ will probably extend his career.

Again, it’s better than before where many top players were not selected. Here youngsters are coming through and performing on the big stage. As for Pakistan they need some hard hitters and some can come out of the PSL for one day cricket too.
Most leagues around the world are bringing in players in the same fashion

If you PCB has to select ODI players through T20 based PSL, then why PCB is going to held the National One Day Cup ?.... Is there any guarantee that the top performers will be selected for the National side ??? ... I think NO, because PCB will keep selecting some particular players based on unknown / illogical reasons, they have dropped Ahmed Shahzad, Wahab Riaz but I'm scared that these crap players will be selected again (God forbid).

Hopefully not, but good signs that they have been dropped after long last
One of the major reasons we won champions trophy was cos Shehzad was dropped and Wahab got injured

Yh he probably will, reports state he will. However, for Pakistan fans this is a massive step. No Shehzad, Akmals or Wahab in the squad

Shahzad has been in the side even when he was not performing.

PCB has some players who will play, doesn't matter how bad they performs, they know that they won't be dropped. Such players like Shahzad, Wahab, Akmal Brothers and even Hafeez are burden for the ODI team since very long time. I think 10-15 ODIs are good enough to judge a player.

When electronic media or social media starts to degrade them, they scores 50+ runs to justify their selection for at-least next 2-3 tours. This is pathetic. Hafeez knew he is now under radar and he "can" be dropped, then he scored 50 against England in Champions Trophy, a totally different innings as compared to previous 10-15 matches. We have eyes, we can see. Don't they knows it ?
 
Tbf to Hafeez he has been performing this year, hence its hard to drop a player who has been performing.
Like I said, before that I would have dropped him but since he’s performing he should be in the squad. Until we obviously find someone better
 
Shehzad performed timely in T20 cup & Qea trophy when he was down and out for a long time (surely)

He will be selected for T20i squad which is gold for him.
 
Shehzad has scored 100 in SA so needs to be given chance to prove himself.
PCB must apologize publically for excluding him and slot him immediately for the ODI side instead of Imad Wasim
 
Cant keep just recalling players just on a few domestic performances. I doubt shezhad has improved technically and mentally since been dropped.
 
Yes. Many players have been successful at domestic level but haven't been able to replicate such performances in internationals where teams are better at exploiting a player's weaknesses and standards, especially in fielding, are much higher. Shehzad is one of those individuals.
