Legendary pacer Wasim Akram had also shown interest in becoming the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board before Prime Minister Imran Khan picked Ramiz Raja for the responsibility. (More Cricket News)

According to a PCB insider aware of the developments leading up to the nomination of Ramiz as chairman, the former great also expressed interest in the position.

"It is true Wasim Akram was also considered for the chairman's post and had also indicated his interest but, apparently, the prime minister was advised that Ramiz would be a better choice as he had no past baggage to carry with him," the source claimed.

Akram, who is an influential member of the PCB's Cricket Committee and also Director cricket/coach with the Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League, is presently in Australia with his wife and daughter.

According to the source at one time Akram's name was put forward as a top candidate to replace Ehsan Mani and he also showed interest but his name cropping up in a match-fixing scandal in the past became a hurdle for him.

The former captain was at the centre of match-fixing allegations with other Pakistan players in the 1990s and was also fined for not cooperating with a judicial inquiry commission on the fixing allegations in 2000.

Although several match-fixing inquiries including the Justice Malik Qayyum commission between 1995 and 2000 never found Akram guilty of any wrongdoing, the allegations surrounding him did affected him personally.

Akram has always claimed innocence and maintained that he has not accepted any offers to work in the PCB because of his other commitments.

"But this time Wasim had shown interest but eventually the premier settled upon Ramiz who has never come under the shadow of match-fixing allegations as a player or captain," the source said.

So he can be part of the Cricket Committee but for Chairman his past is mentioned?

thank god he was not considered. Dont need a corrupt individual as the chairman of pcb atleast

no way should he ever be considered for the top job, as good as he was everyone knows his past.

So then dont let him come near the PCB or PSL.

hahahaha touche my friend touche.

I just get that feeling is all, however in terms of whether or not he is a good bowling coach or not is another matter. Waqar is evidence that it's not necessary that a good player will become a successful bowling coach.

However, from what i did see Razzaq could be an ideal candidate. I saw a clip of him recently and like what i saw with him teaching the likes of Rauf, Wasim Jr and Arshad. Get your qualifications up to date Razzaq boy and you might be within a chance.

Seems like earning black money can be an addiction for some people. Match-fixing is like that too. Wasim akram should enjoy his black money for a while.

Can you explain how is he corrupt? Did he work for PPP or PLMN or something else?

My view is ex players wont make good chairmans, they will always think they know better about the game.

That would've been a new low. Wasim has no admin experience and has no formal education either. He also carries the baggage of corruption and, even though he's been involved with the PCB in the past, the post of chairman has its own set of standard.

Certainly would've been a disaster.

Match fixing and spot fixing is corruption.

Past cricketers have said so that he was involved in match fixing. Waseem Akram never cooperated with the commission....

Like Justice Qayyum said, Waseem Akram is not above suspicion

There is a difference between suspicion and convictions. Akram should open up more but its up to the authorities to make a case and prove it. As they did with corrupt politicians but even then we both know many have benefited from corruption working for corrupt regimes but are free as a bird.

Just imagine in place of him if it was Rashid Latif doing match-fixing he would have been put into a Pakistani jail. Because of his national hero status, he got away with it so easily.
Why not pick up a job at a domestic level, teach and groom young talent.

Wasim thinks thay he's above the "menial" jobs like head coach, chief selector, NCA director etc. He thinks he's hot #hit now and that is confirmed with this latest news.

What has Wasim done in the past that even makes him an eligible candidate? Zero higher education and zero admin background/experience. This guy really needs to be brought back down to earth. He's rejected coaching gigs just because he cannot "commit to spending that much time away from family". A bogus excuse! And now wants chairmanship? Lol

In sports if you dont do your dope test and keep delaying you are deemed guilty.

Akram was fined and if he had an issue he could had appealed agaisnt the decision.

Justice Qayyum should had banned him there.

Guys - make sure no specific allegations are added to this thread. You can refer to the Qayyum report.

Appointment of Wasim Akram as PCB Chairman would have been in contempt of the Justice Qayyum Report recommendations.

Wasim Akram must be regretting his past.

I dont vote for youtubers or people who run their facebook page videos for such an important post. Rameez has said a lot of nonsense or truth (controversial) in last couple of years and therefore also has a bit of baggage about him.

Where are guys like Majid Khan???

Or maybe it's because all of the roles you have mentioned are completely thankless?

Waqar had the guts (or stupidity) to throw his hat into the ring. How's that working out for him or for Pakistan?

The fact is that it is a lose-lose situation to be involved with PCB after retirement. So if you're an ex-player who is going to be involved it may as well be in a role you really, really want.

PSL coach
Working at PCB camps
On Cricket committee

But his past only comes up when he's applying for the Chairman's position?

I believe cricket committee is just an advisory committee and his short stints at PCB camps also don't get affected by his past.

Whereas the position of PCB chairman has a lot of power, influence and decision making involved. His shady past will definitely be a hurdle.

A great cricketer , but AKram is not well educated and his past was not clean .

Sooner or later he will end up being the chairman. Maybe after Rameez,it will be his turn.

Oh yeah, Misbah will be back no doubt. After he’s fired as HC, he’ll meddle around for a few years and then his name will come up. I’d say in 6-9 years.

Now that Ramiz has been chosen we need to back him up. Go Rambo waiting for what changes to bring.

Wasim Akram has just denied these reports.

I suppose his asking price (as compared to his commitment) is too high?

Whenever you try to speak to Wasim bhai on advice on cricket it’s always this is my account details first so pay me then i will talk.

PCB can’t afford his ego.

PCB should not be allowed to have anything to do with controversial people like Wasim Akram. Salman Butt got punished for a mere spot fixing and got ban over 10 years.
