Wasim Akram withdraws case in road-rage shooting [update#107]

Incidents like this prove the deteriorating Law and Order situation in the country. It's no surprise the massive brain drain and immigration to other countries. With no improvement in sight, why would parents want their children to live in such uncertain conditions.

Maybe wasim did not give way to wadera car and he and his guards went crazy and shot fire to express their anger.

Karachi: Police have started investigation into the firing on former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram's car, a media report said.

Police recorded statements of witnesses, got custody of CCTV footage and sent casings of spent bullets to forensic laboratory on Thursday, Dawn on Friday quoted officials as saying.

A gunman said to be aged around 50 years had fired shots at Akram’s car on Karsaz road on Wednesday after a road accident, which followed heated exchange of words.

A man has been arrested for a shot being fired at former Pakistan cricket team captain Wasim Akram's car here, a media report said. The nabbed suspect is a private security guard, a TV channel reported on Friday. Police is on the lookout for his employer, who is still at large.

The owner of the vehicle was also present at the time of the incident, police added. The attack took place on Shah Faisal Road when Akram was in a car, travelling from his home to the National Stadium where he is supervising a 13-day training camp for fast bowlers. Police official Munir Sheikh said they retrieved the CCTV footage of the incident.

The former Pakistan skipper had been opened fire at on Wednesday, but he survived the assassination attempt. According to reports in the Pakistan media, a shaken but alert Akram called the police helpline and registered a complaint after the attack.

Akram had said two unidentified armed men on a motorcycle opened fire at his vehicle. "A car hit my vehicle from the rear and a person sitting in the other car fired a shot at me." Akram was quoted as saying after the incident on Wednesday.

The 49-year-old denied receiving any threat prior to the incident and alleged that a government official, who was inside the car, attacked him. He added he has already given the car's registration number to the police. "I have noted down the vehicle's number and given it to the police." he was quoted as saying on Wednesday.

Akram is regarded as one of the greatest pacers of all time. He has taken 414 Test and 502 One-Day International (ODI) wickets in an international career spanning two decades. Since his retirement, Akram has become a commentator and has also undertaken short term coaching assignments for PCB. He is also currently employed as the bowling coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.

Suspect apprehended in Wasim Akram shooting incident

KARACHI: Police on Friday claimed to have detained one suspect allegedly involved in the shooting incident involving the former captain of Pakistan cricket team, Wasim Akram.

“The police have detained one suspect after raid on his home in Quaidabad’s Daud Chowrangi locality,” said DIG Karachi-East Zone, Munir Ahmed Shaikh.

He added that the arrested suspect is the driver of the vehicle which hit the legendary player’s car on the busy road of Karsaz area on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the exchange of harsh words which led to the reported shooting.

The shooting incident took place after a minor accident when the shooter's car hit Wasim's Mercedes. When he asked the driver to pull over, a heated discussion took place and after stepping out of his vehicle, the suspect sitting in the back of the car opened fire.

The fast bowler remained unhurt and the shooter hastily fled the scene when a crowd began to gather.

In his initial probe, the suspect told investigators that after the accident, a short exchange of heated words took place, followed by gunshot fired at Akram’s vehicle.

The DIG East said that the main suspect who opened fire has been identified, but the police official was reluctant to reveal his name to media at this time.

He hoped that the main culprit would be arrested soon.

Wasim Akram is reported to continue with his hunt for premium fast bowlers in the country.

“Wasim Akram is in trauma but all right. He is staying in Karachi and will continue supervising the camp for fast bowlers at the National Stadium,” a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesperson said.

The common man fighting back

Shooting at wasim might be a step too far but nawab culture in Pakistan is perverse

I dont get it.
Did some guys on a motorcylce fire a shot at wasim or was it somebody in a car? Or were the people on motorcylce the guards of the person in the car?

Karachi: Pakistan cricket legend Wasim Akram, who survived a scary road rage incident, has been provided special security while commuting between his home and the national stadium where he is presently supervising a fast bowlers camp.

At least four fully armed personal of the paramilitary rangers have been escorting the former Pakistan captain's car while security has also been beefed up at the stadium when the camp is held in the aftermath of the road rage incident earlier this week.

"After the incident it was felt that because he is such a high profile figure he should be given security while coming and going from the stadium and conducting the camp," a PCB official said.

Although the incident occurred some three days back when an unidentified man fired at Wasim's car the former fast bowler has not skipped a single day of the camp.

"My wife Shaneria and family have been a big encouragement and strength for me. They were worried after the incident but once they saw I was okay they were relieved. My wife told me that it is my country, my city and I should carry on with my work regardless of the incident," Wasim told reporters.

"My motto in life has always been "Jo Daqr Gaya Who Mar Gaya so I am carrying on with my daily routine and I am satisfied with the way the police is investigating the case," he said.

The police have arrested one man in connection with the incident whose name is said to be Aamir and he is a security guard in a private company.

A senior police official said they had got leads and were searching for his companions who were in the car when the incident happened with Wasim's car.

The official said the arrested man had initially hidden the vehicle involved in the accident but it was later found by the police.
"It appears as if the main culprit has gone into hiding but he will be arrested soon," he said.

Wasim, 49, also disclosed that he had received a string of support calls and messages from fellow cricketers including many from India.

"Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Andrew Flintoff, Imran Khan and others called me up and many have sent me messages of support. It has just helped me get over the scary incident and continue with my work of working with the young fast bowlers," Wasim added.

Whats the latest on this? I can't believe that the police still hasn't apprehended the suspect or made headway in this case. If someone like Wasim Akram can't get justice in Pakistan then who can?

Suspect involved in Wasim Akram shooting tenders apology

The prime suspect involved in a case of firing at former cricketer Wasim Akram tendered an apology to the cricket superstar on Sunday.

The suspect, Major (retd) Amirul Rehman, wrote a letter to the former Pakistan cricket captain, unconditionally apologizing for the”sad incident”, adding that he had to face strong opposition from his family due to the road-rage incident.

“You are our national hero, our pride. How can I think to fight with you?” he wrote in his letter.

However, what impact this letter will leave on the legal matter vis-à-vis the firing incident is yet to be ascertained.

On August 5, Akram remained unhurt following an attack on his car near National Stadium in Karachi.

Akram’s car met with an accident on Karsaz Road near National Stadium. Following a row with the driver of the car, a 2002 Honda Civic, the private guard sitting with the driver fired at Akram’s car. Before police could arrive at the scene, the driver and his guards managed to flee. However, there were no casualties reported during the incident.

After the incident, Akram called the police helpline 15 and registered a complaint.

As it is a criminal offence I would love to see Wasim Akram persuing this case further so that this Major be punished for this crime, he would have never tendered this apology if this had been an 'AAM ADMI'.

Wasim Akram forgives man who shot at his car

KARACHI (Web Desk) – The prime suspect involved in a road-rage shooting incident with Wasim Akram – the former captain of Pakistan cricket team – has submitted a written apology to the cricket legend.

In his apology letter, Major (retd) Amirul Rehman tendered his unconditional apology over what he says was a “sad incident” which arose out of road rage. He added that he and his family were great fans of Wasim Akram.

Major (r) Amir said that he faced opposition from his family members in favour of Akram.

He called the former left arm all-rounder – also known as the Sultan of Swing – a national hero and pride of the country, terming the whole incident a misunderstanding.

The suspect also sought a personal audience with the cricket legend.

On the other hand, Wasim Akram has reportedly accepted his apology but with conditions. The cricket legend wants the arms license of Major (r) Amir and driving license of his driver revoked immediately.

According to sources, the arms license of Major (r) Amir has been cancelled.

On August 6, Wasim Akram’s Mercedes was shot at on Karachi’s Karsaz Road while the former cricket star was on his way to the National Stadium Karachi to conduct a training session for young bowlers.

The shooting incident took place after Akram got into a minor car accident.

Following the mishap the former cricket captain had asked the driver to pull over. A heated discussion had ensued and the suspect, who was sitting in the back seat, came out of the car and fired a shot which hit Akram’s vehicle.

Apology not enough

We are told that the prime suspect involved in a case of firing at former cricketer Wasim Akram tendered an apology to the cricket superstar.

The suspect, Major (retd) Amirul Rehman, wrote a letter to the former Pakistan cricket captain, apologising for the “sad incident”, adding that he had to face strong opposition from his family due to this road-rage incident. “You are our national hero, our pride. How can I think to fight with you?” he wrote in his letter, with no remorse for the damage this incident caused to Pakistan in terms of image.

What had happened was that Akram’s car met with an accident on Karsaz Road near the National Stadium last month. Following a row with the driver of the other car, the guard sitting besides the driver fired at Akram’s car and before the police could arrive at the scene, the driver and the guard managed to flee.

Wasim Akram reported the matter to the police. And given his profile, there was immediate action. Within hours, the car was traced. But the vehicle that crashed with Wasim Akram’s car was not the same that the police had traced. In fact, what transpired was that the vehicle whose occupants had attacked Wasim Akram had fake number plates.

Now an apology has come forward from the actual perpetrator of the crime. Given the background of both the parties, the police is pressing for a compromise.

The police only came into action because of the high profile image of Wasim Akram, otherwise it has become the norm in Karachi to see people with guards bully others on the roads as well as at other public and private spaces.

The police has not even registered an FIR, relying on a katcha FIR so that the matter can be settled. There are a number of anomalies here. Fake number plates. Attack on a person. Hit and run. But all these will be brushed aside by the police so that a settlement is reached between the two parties.

Wasim Akram may be puzzled but this is how things are in Karachi. This is not the Punjab of Mian Shahbaz Sharif. It is the law of the jungle here. A handful of VIPs and those connected to VIPs can jostle and bully their way into doing anything. There is no law and order. The Rangers are a temporary relief in the city. They will come and they will go. The local police calls the shots and they know which side their bread is buttered.

Speaking of bread and butter, the chief minister of Sindh, usually known for his slumber, swung into action last week following the arrest of Dr Asim Hussain. Qaim Ali Shah took this as an attack on his party.

Till now, everything has been alright. But now that the noose is tightening, it seems people are waking up from their self induced naps. The PPP has nothing to show for the many years it ruled and looted from Sindh.

There is no rule of law in Sindh. Karachi has possibly the highest crime rate of any city in the region, not only in Pakistan. It is a city that has been consistently let down by its rulers and its residents.

For a brief period during the Nazimship of Mustafa Kamal there was a feeling that finally the city was rising and coming to its own. Those dreams were shattered when the PPP disbanded the city government and put unelected bureaucrats in power who went on to pick the city clean.

Today there is almost no pole left without an advertisement and no footpath that has not been encroached by advertisement hoardings. One wonders where this money goes.

A recent incident at Karachi Gymkhana may give some idea of how things are done in the Quaid’s city. A high government official wanted to increase the number of government functionaries as members to the club. When some members objected, he blew a fuse. He threatened to close down the swimming pool on grounds that it could breed dengue mosquitoes and also order an inquiry into a new building being constructed. So much for honest bureaucrats.

Arrest warrants issued for Wasim Akram for not appearing before court

A local court in Karachi on Tuesday issued arrest warrants against former star cricketer Wasim Akram, after he failed to appear before the court during last 31 hearings of a case, it has been learnt.

Akram himself had lodged the case in August last year at Bahadurabad police station against Maj (retd) Amirur Rehman and others.

The court issued bailable warrants against Akram and asked him to appear before the court on January 17.

On Aug 6, 2015, Akram's Mercedes was shot at on Karachi's Karsaz Road while the former cricketer was on his way to the National Stadium Karachi to conduct a training session for young bowlers.

The shooting incident took place after Akram got into a minor car accident.

Following the mishap the former cricket captain had asked the driver to pull over. A heated discussion had ensued and the suspect, who was sitting in the back seat, came out of the car and fired a shot which hit Akram's vehicle.

Later, after filing the case against him, Rehman had managed to get pre-arrest bail from the court. Subsequently, he also wrote a letter to the star cricketer, seeking pardon unconditionally.

Wasim Akram says attack case was 'misunderstanding'

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram on Tuesday withdrew the case he had filed two years ago regarding an alleged firing incident on his car in Karachi.

Speaking in court, the former fast-bowler said the case was filed due to a misunderstanding between parties and he did not wish to pursue the matter legally anymore.

“The case was filed on the basis of a misunderstanding,” Akram said. “However, both parties have reached an amicable agreement and I don’t want to pursue the matter in court,” he added.

The court approved the request to terminate the case.

Last week, a bailable arrest warrant was issued for Akram for not showing in court to record his statement.

The 50-year-old missed 31 court hearings of the said case, leading Judicial Magistrate-East to once again issue a new hearing date — January 17 — but not before ordering the law enforcement authorities to present the complainant to the court as well.

On August 5, 2015, Akram had registered FIR No 218/15 at the Bahadurabad Police Station against three unidentified men in a case of road rage shooting.

The former cricketer had alleged that he had been shot at on Karachi’s Karsaz Road while he was on his way to attend a bowling camp at the National Stadium.

The shot was fired after Akram had chased a car that had hit his automobile in a routine accident and fled away.

Later, the owner of the car was identified as a certain Major (retd) Amirul Rehman, whose personal guard is believed to have fired at Akram.

An apology was tendered to the former cricketer, who accepted it but not without demanding the driving and arms license of Major (r) Amir to be revoked immediately.
