Wasim Jaffer calls time on his 25 year cricket career

This is appalling treatment of anyone, never mind an Indian stalwart. India really has become a basket case.

What kind of slogan is Jai Hanuman for a cricket team anyway?

Rishab Pant is from Uttarakhand, is he not? He better answer this one.

Wow, I would like to see people defend this treatment of Wasim Jaffer.

Visit the most popular online Indian cricket forum and you will realise that they would not only justify this but also other actions of the extreme Modi government. Indians have lost their marbles.

Hanuman is associated with fitness and sports for example all the akhadaas and other gyms across the country. You don’t have to be a religious scholar to figure that out, getting out of the house or occasional travel will do the trick.

As far as this issue goes, don’t know the details, following the career of Jaffer as a cricketer, I would like to think he is a great guy and I would lean on his side till we get the details.

Not even Wasim Jaffer gets spared lol.

Let the details come out.

But for now, i will believe Jaffer over some random officials playing dangerous politics.

I think things are badly getting twisted here.

over the last few years, indian cricket has had very good success in producing first class cricketers who have transitioned smoothly to intl cricket. to learn secrets behind this success, pcb should look to get some coaches from domestic indian setup. on the surface, ex intl cricketers like wasim jaffer seem like perfect candidates for the role.

Doubt that is going to happen. First Pakistanis are never going to look at indian coaches ... and secondly it would be literal suicide for someone like Wasim J to coach Pakistani cricketers because that basically proves some of that communal argument true.

Poor guy. Really tough time to be Muslim in india it seems.

Absolute disaster, good on Kumble Indian cricketers can come out and shut these people up.

======

Veteran Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer stepping down as the Uttarakhand coach has become one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket at the moment. Soon after Jaffer stepped down from the position citing interference from the selection committee and Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU) secretary Mahim Verma in team selection, Verma accused him of religious-bias selections as the Uttarakhand coach.

One of the most respected figures in India’s domestic cricket, Jaffer has received support from plenty of Vidarbha cricketers (his former team) who said he was like a big brother to every member in the team. Legendary Indian cricketer and former head coach of the senior men’s cricket team, Anil Kumble, has extended his support to Jaffer saying he did the right thing by stepping down and had his full support.

“With you Wasim. Did the right thing. Unfortunately it’s the players who’ll miss your mentor ship,” Kumble said in a tweet.

What Wasim Jaffer said?

Meanwhile, speaking to ANI, Jaffer said he was disappointed to see his commitment towards the Uttarakhand team challenged with such allegations as his priority was always to push the deserving candidates.

"It is very disheartening and it is very sad, to be honest. I have worked with so much intensity and I was fully committed to being the coach of Uttarakhand. I always wanted to push the deserving candidates. It seemed like that I was fighting for every little thing. There was so much interference of the selectors, sometimes non-deserving players are being pushed," Jaffer told ANI.

"The secretary Mahim Verma has a lot of interference, whenever you talk to him, he says to talk to him. There were many roadblocks and he never responded to me. Towards the end, they selected the team for Vijay Hazare Trophy and I was not kept in the loop. They changed the captain, 11 players were changed, if things have to go down like this, then how can one work? I am not saying that I will select the team, but if you do not take my recommendation then what is the point of me being there," he added.

Mahim Verma backs his allegations

Meanwhile, reacting to Jaffer’s comments, Mahim said that the senior batsman had misbehaved with him on several occasions and he along with the selection committee had met all his demands as the Uttarakhand coach.

"Wasim had so many issues and whatever he is saying it is absolutely false there is no fact in his statement. We started creating activities on his request only. He organised a selection match. Jaffer said that if things will not run in my opinion I will step down. He also said that trainer and bowling coach will be from my side I said okay. The selection committee said whatever team he is asking we can give him and if there will be no performance we will take action against him," Verma said.

Wasim Jaffer is a pretty humble guy. I won't believe the allegations put on him. He is a muslim afterall. He cannot be right in India. :inti

Why does a cricketer have to sing praises of someone he doesnt believe in?

After resigning as the coach of Uttarakhand, former India batsman Wasim Jaffer on Thursday asked what is the point of holding such a post when a coach is being mistreated and his recommendations are not being adhered to. Earlier this week, Jaffer had stepped down as the coach of Uttarakhand, saying that there was a lot of interference from the selection committee and Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU) secretary Mahim Verma in team selection. He also said that he was fully devoted to coaching Uttarakhand, and in his resignation email, he shared that he turned down various coaching roles, including the offer of Bangladesh's batting coach.

"It is very disheartening and it is very sad, to be honest. I have worked with so much intensity and I was fully committed to being the coach of Uttarakhand. I always wanted to push the deserving candidates. It seemed like that I was fighting for every little thing. There was so much interference of the selectors, sometimes non-deserving players are being pushed," Jaffer told ANI on Thursday.

Jaffer was appointed as the coach of Uttarakhand in June last year. As per some media reports, some CAU officials have also levelled communal allegations against Jaffer, saying that the domestic cricket stalwart was creating a religious divide within the team. However, he termed it as completely "baseless" and said if this was the case, then he would have not resigned, rather he would have been sacked.

"I told them if you have me here just give me some freedom. I have played my cricket very fairly so I will never let any unexpected thing happen and I will not let any deserving cricketer miss the chance. I had conveyed everything to them but unfortunately, things did not happen like that. It is very very sad if I need to sit there and talk about the communal angle. Somebody who has played for 15-20 years and then to hear this, these are baseless allegations, they are doing this to cover up all other issues. I have played cricket with a lot of dignity. I have resigned because I was not happy, there is nothing more that I want to do. If I was communal, I would have been sacked. Now that I have resigned, they are bringing these things up," said Jaffer.

However, when ANI contacted CAU secretary Mahim Verma for his take on the whole Jaffer issue, he said that the former India cricketer misbehaved with him many times and he wanted the selection committee to always back his calls.

The selection committee said whatever team he is asking we can give him and if there will be no performance we will take action against him," said Mahim Verma.

"He also misbehaved with me several times. On February 7, he gave a separate list of players, I am again saying that he has a right to recommend but he cannot send a list of players who will be selected by the selection committee. There were many issues with him. We wanted a good cricketing atmosphere in our association that is why we hired him," he added.

Recently, former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer made heads turn when he resigned as the Uttrakhand coach citing interference in team selection. In response, serious charges were levelled upon him by the CAU's (Cricket Association of Uttrakhand) secretary Mahim Verma in a media report. It claimed that Jaffer was being religiously biased when it came to team selection and choosing the captain for the state side.

Thus, it was natural that the question would be posed in front of Team India Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane -- who also rubbed shoulders with domestic legend Jaffer during his active days for Mumbai, West Zone and even the Indian Oil Corporation -- ahead of the India-England second Test in Chennai, from Saturday (February 13).

Asked to comment on the religious bias allegations levied on Jaffer, Rahane chose to take a safe route and stated at the presser, "Sir, I don't have an idea regarding this issue, what has happened, so I don't think that I should comment on this topic, because I don't have an idea."

On Tuesday (February 9), the former right-handed cricketer Jaffer had chosen to part ways with Uttrakhand, resigning on claims of regular interference and bias of selectors and association's secretary towards a group of non-deserving players. After being slammed for being biased on account of religion, Jaffer had reacted in a virtual presser and stated,"...jo communal angle lagaya (the communal angle that has been brought up), that is very, very sad."

"They levelled an allegation that I am in favour of Iqbal Abdulla, I wanted to make Iqbal Abdulla as the captain, which is absolutely wrong," he had asserted.

Since then, many star cricketers such as Anil Kumble, Manoj Tiwary, Irfan Pathan, former Mumbai batsman Shishir Hattangadi have come in support of under-fire Jaffer. However, some of the big names in Indian cricket, such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and the likes are yet to react.

The former Indian opener Jaffer represented India in 31 Tests and 6 ODIs. He is also the batting coach of the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) franchise in the IPL. Currently, he remains a favourite among fans on social media platforms for his hilarious cricketing posts from time to time.

What a copout by Rahane. He could have stated his experience but decided to stay quiet.

Atleast Kumble has come forward to back Wasim.

Btw where's Tendulkar hiding no tweet from him on this...he was Wasim's teammate at Mumbai for so many years

Must say past few weeks have been learning experience for me regarding our cricketers. They are so bloody spineless.

What was that Rahane? As much spine there as his batting has exhibited during last few years!

And that snake Kohli. Ever so ready to comment on anything and everything!

He is yet to utter anything on this matter, that alone should be enough for everyone to know the character of the man!

Cricket Adminstrators are current or wannabe politicians. What else do we expect from them other than to use religion to bring down somebody. Shameful incident.

Kudos to the cricketers who have come out in support of Jaffer. Hopefully sanity prevails.

This seems a case of he said, he said. What extra information you have to believe one guy vs the other? Just because it fits the "secular" narrative you feel the need to support one guy over the other. And also how do you expect Rahane to know who is speaking the truth? Just because he played with Jaffer he knows what Jaffer did as a coach?

The humiliation of Jaffar shows how much Ind has lost its moral compass. I don't know if Jaffar has done what's alleged and by the looks of it,his crime is being a Muslim not leading some radical group

It really is kinda sad. What’s worse is that most fans on social media and forum who have absolutely zero idea about who the other accusing party is are taking their side over a cricketer/coach who has had an impeccable record otherwise and they know for decade plus. And there could only be one reason why you wouldn’t back wasim Jaffer in this case

No one is infallible. If even Sachin and Dravid crossed the line, why cannot jaffer. We must not put them on pedestal and think they are beyond human weakness and biases.

Good on rahane to rise above his personal bias and maintain neutrality. People are capable of anything. Just because you have been someone's friend and he has been nice to you, doesn't mean he cannot be bad with others.

The biggest irony is that the Uttarakhand team had a religious chant to begin with and Bhakths have no problem with that.

Religion is part of the social fabric and reflects the emotions of the people. Father of the nation involved religion as part of his politics, who told you that religion has to be discarded in india? Is there an india in a parallel universe which rest of the indians don't know about?

I’m saying it’s sad that people are supporting and taking the word of random nobodies they have no idea of over world of a cricketer they have known for a decade plus and who has not been involved in any controversies or had priors. There can be only one reason why people are supporting a random nobody over Wasim Jaffer on this case and we all know what it is.

Then why blame Jaffar for bringing a Moulavi for a particular player which he didn’t even do. And a state sports team in a diverse country like India shouldn’t have religious chants. I am pretty sure you will get your khakis in a twist if Kashmir cricket team chants Allahu Akbar after a win.😂😂😂

I didn't blame Jaffer for brining a maulavi. You have a problem with use of religion as motivation, so you will be the one getting your whatever color pants in a twist if they do that. At least be logical.

No, they have not known the cricketer for decades. They have only watched him play and know his stats, and not what his ideology or thinking is.

It is sad that people are being biased, either side, without being open about it. Jaffer may or may not be a bigot. I cannot support him because his name is familiar, nor can I blame him without having some evidence.

CC bhai...I feel sometimes, you just argue for the sake of arguing. :P

Don't see much support from Jaffer at all really. People are keeping their head down over the issue.

Not surprised though.

https://www.hindustantimes.com/cricket/wasim-jaffer-resignation-row-uttarakhand-cm-orders-inquiry-101613448913093.html

Amid the row following former India opening batsman Wasim Jaffer’s resignation as Uttarakhand state cricket team coach with an office-bearer of Cricket Association of Uttarakhand (CAU) accusing him of “communal bias”, chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat ordered an inquiry on Monday.

Rawat ordered the inquiry after meeting the officials of CAU at his official residence in Dehradun at the weekend.

Darshan Singh Rawat, media coordinator for CM, said: “On Saturday evening, CM had met a few officials of CAU at his residence who apprised him of the matter. After listening to them, he ordered an inquiry in the whole matter. Once the inquiry report comes, he would take the required action.”

He did not give details on who would conduct the inquiry.

The development comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s tweet on the episode. “In the last few years, hate has been normalised so much that even our beloved sport cricket has been marred by it. India belongs to all of us. Do not let them dismantle our unity,” he tweeted.

Jaffer resigned on February 8 citing “interference and bias of selectors and CAU office-bearers in team selection and promoting non-deserving players.” He was appointed in June last year on a one-year contract.

Uttarakhand team manager Navneet Mishra alleged that Jaffer picked players based on their religion and created a communal atmosphere.

CAU office-bearers distanced themselves from the allegations. When contacted, its secretary, Mahim Verma, said: “No such thing has come in front of me during camp or matches (allegations of communal bias).”

Verma had alleged that “Jaffer had been promoting players from a particular community and brought a Muslim cleric among the players for Friday prayers.” Jaffer refuted allegations of bias, saying “the communal angle brought in is very sad.”

The Uttarakhand state Congress has accused the BJP-led state government of communalising the sport.

“If the CAU would have raised objections on Jaffer’s coaching on merit or demerits then it would have been okay. But levelling communal charges against him is totally unacceptable. Under the BJP rule even a sport is being communalised, which is not healthy for Uttarakhand's cricket,” said Suryakant Dhasmana, Congress state vice-president.

Not surprised though.

I think Ind society has become so fearful of the Hindutuva that anyone showing any sign of their Muslimness, will be banished. Even if his teammates couldn't comment on this, they could have talked about their experiences with him but they have decided to stay quiet

Even though his last series was vs SA, Brett Lee had effectively finished his career in the previous series in Australia. 3 tests 5 dismissals. Mostly caught Gilchrist. He just couldn't stop fishing.
