LAHORE: Former medical head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Dr. Sohail Salim, who resigned after seven Covid-19 cases appeared in this year’s Pakistan Super League-6 which led to the postponement of the league midway, disclosed on Wednesday that he did not resign at his own but was asked for it.

“On the very next day [following the PSL postponement] PCB chief executive Wasim Khan came to meet me. I thought we would discuss the future line of action on how to improve the situation [amid Covid-19], but Wasim told me ‘sorry we are parting ways’, to which I said okay,” Sohail said while talking exclusively to Dawn.

As head of PCB’s medical team, Dr Sohail prepared the bio-secure bubble for PSL-6 as coronavirus situation demanded unprecedented measures. However, after 14 matches seven Covid-19 cases were reported at the league during the Karachi leg, forcing the PCB to postpone it for an indefinite time on March 4. Later, the Board announced a new schedule to hold the remaining 20 matches from June 1 to 17 in Karachi. Lahore, the other venue picked in the original schedule, was dropped.

“In my resignation, I also wrote that as per the PCB desire I am resigning,” Sohail further said.

On whether he inquired about his fault, Dr. Sohail said, “No. Why I should I? It seems Wasim met me with a decided mind.”

When asked if he as head of the medical team had proposed the PCB to hire an expert company to strictly implement Covid-19 SOPs, which were breached freely during the PSL-6, Dr Sohail revealed it was discussed most probably a couple of months ago before the PSL was held. “However, I don’t know what happened [which led to the idea getting dropped].”

Asked if he appeared before the two-member inquiry panel of the PCB, which investigated the PSL-6 suspension saga but its report was not made public, Dr Sohail responded with a hiccup.

“Which report? Yes, I appeared before the inquiry panel for 40 minutes and most probably I was the last or second last one who was called,” he said.

Dr Sohail, when asked whether he was made a scapegoat by the PCB, said he did his job sincerely.

“I don’t know but I did my work at the PCB with sincerity and during the last one year [due to Covid-19] the workload was heavy.”

He added, “It should have been better had the PCB waited for the report of the inquiry panel, while asking me to resign just one day after the postponement as it did not sound well.

“And I don’t think that the PCB chairman or chief executive were not happy with my work. If they were unhappy, they did not even point out any mistake on my part,” he stated.

Dr Sohail said he preferred to resign also because he could not fight against the system, adding if someone was not happy with him why he should force himself to continue.

“I don’t want to ridicule anyone or the system. They [PCB] did what they liked and considered suitable, and if I have no place in the system then it is better to quit,” he said.

Dr Sohail, who served the PCB for 22 long years, said it was good working experience and added he learnt and gained a lot during this long association.

“The future of many cricketers like fast bowlers Nasim Shah, Usman Shinwari, Mohammad Amir and many others was saved from fitness problems and I left the PCB with a good legacy,” he said.

Responding to a query on whether the PCB was over confident after successfully holding Covid-free home series against Zimbabwe and South Africa as it dropped the proposal of hiring an expert company for this purpose, Dr Sohail lauded both the touring teams for strictly observing the SOPs in letter and spirit during their respective series in Pakistan.

“I salute both the teams and their management for being so disciplined in every field as we were enjoying when we were working for a nation-to-nation project,” he said.

Underlining that no one was perfect, Dr Sohail said the rapidly deteriorating Covid-19 situation in India had also led to the suspension of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) which had hired services of the best experts to control Covid-19.

“Exactly the same is happening with the IPL which like PSL-6 was postponed mid-way. And these are not the only competitions which have suffered as other sports across the world have also taken the hit due to Covid-19,” he remarked.

Someone had to pay the price for the debacle with the PSL biosecure bubble, although not sure if the doctor could have stopped the franchise owners breaking the rules.

However, the performance of the PCB's medical team over the past few years hasn't been without controversy and there were alarming cases of injuries being misdiagnosed and mismanagement of rehabilitation programmes. Dr Sohail should have been let go a long time ago.

Ofcourse this shameless incompetent guy wouldn't resign on his own. He would happily continue milking the PCB while mismanaging the players injuries for years to come.

It was obvious that Wasim Khan was making him the scapegoat for his own incompetence and mismanagement.

The PSL debacle was a failure of Wasim Khan’s so-called leadership and not the medical team’s.

There is zero scapegoating here.

Dr Suhail had a job to do, he didn't do it well at all. Wasim fired him.

But he didn't go in public and blame Dr Suhail. PCB copped the flak as they should have.

I have many problems with Wasim but blaming him for everything will just reek of agenda.

Good on Dr Suhail to rise above petty squabbles.

Who should be blamed for ipl debacle?

Scapegoat or responsible for the PSL fiasco?

That indeed is the question.

Is the Doctor actually accepting any responsibility, as I can't see it.

Was it the Dr’s fault that Javed Afridi was letting Pakistani TikTok stars into the bubble?

If anything, Wasim Khan should be resigning for his failure to keep the bubble secure. He let franchise owners bring their friends and family into the bubble. The franchise owners and Wasim Khan put the players at risk.

Don't understand what posters get by regularly referencing IPL here. This is a thread about the PSL fiasco which is its own exclusive thing that the PCB is almost completely responsible for, and has nothing to do with the IPL.

It was one big party according to some players we spoke with.

Very little organisation, very little segregation and control.

Shambles.

Javed Afridi needs to answer. The guy literally brought a nobody from Instagram into the Zalmi bubble for Instagram followers.

Some people expect M Wasim to babysit hundreds of people. If owners and players cannot take accountability for their actions, no bubble will ever work unless individuals are held at gunpoint. We all saw how terribly the IPL bubble failed this season. Does that mean Ganguly should resign?

If I was a Indian tax payer I’d gladly criticize IPL. As my tax money would make me a stakeholder of the IPL. So by that account I can’t say anything bad about Ganguly.

Typical leeches like this should be to be booted out long ago. He is with PCB for more than 23 years and still doesn't know his role. That's what happen when an unfit person gets top job by connection just like Misbah/Waqar without having any skill/talent.

What an incompetent individual not taking any responsibility for the failures, probably put his feet up and expected everyone to do his work for him. You were fired mate and that is the truth.

This guy's job was not a tough one honestly:

- monitor every players health
- carry out regular covid testing and report any positive findings
- ensure people are made aware of the SOPs
- ensure a safe environment is maintained for players when they arrive back to the hotel.

I've seen slackers like this guy in bunches in Pakistan.

If Dr. Sohail took the responsibility and failed to deliver, which resulted in his contract termination, and now he is going public with his tantrum then he is EXACTLY the kind of person PCB is full of. And he is EXACTLY the kinda people we need to get rid of.

Kudos to Wasim Khan.
Clean up this mess for us!

Wasim Khan only cares about his own job.

Doesn't care about anyone elses. Has caused hundreds to be unemployed in Pakistan cricket circles. From domestic cricketers to PCB staff.

He was a big part of a big problem. Good that he was made to let go. He doesn't seem like taking any responsibility for it neither did any of the higher ups of PCB. The problem includes every one not just players and staff. In PSL, it actually seemed like no one took the issue of COVID seriously.

Coming back to Dr. Salim, his SOP's and their implementation both were absurd. It seemed like players weren't even briefed about any pandemic going on. Moreover, management and teams staying over at the hotels where normal functions and weddings were going per usual was a big stupid move.

The 3 day quarantine rule is only followed by this very guy who did his job "sincerely".

Franchise owners and many other parties need to be held accountable but PCB are too scared to properly look into the whole fiasco that occurred then. It was avoidable. COVID situation wasn't that bad during that period.

So it looks like it will be just the one person sacked after the PSL bubble-bursting.

I hope the owners have had a ear-bashing from the PCB too.

Didn't know PCB was a jobs and welfare org.

There were too many freeloaders in the old system, including this shambolic doctor.

“The future of many cricketers like fast bowlers Nasim Shah, Usman Shinwari, Mohammad Amir and many others was saved from fitness problems and I left the PCB with a good legacy,”
No mention of Haris Sohail, Hassan Ali, Hammad Azam, Azhar Ali.....
