Nothing against Rahat Ali but it's unfortunate that even after these many years we haven't produced a bowler who could replace him.

A guy who has averaged 50 two years ago in England is somehow picked again. It's myth about him having improved, he still gifts batsmen with rubbish with the odd jaffa for every half a century he goes for. If it was up to me he wouldn't even be in the A team.

Seems like his PSL form has got him selected for the current tour.

Yes. Rahat will go for runs and release pressure. Abbas can keep it tight and can do well in early English conditions.

Abbas is toothless when the ball gets older.

Rahat and Hasan have been our only remotely threatening pacers so far. Funnily they have been among the most economical too.

Rahat will deliver when the real match's on.

He has skills, swings at pace, and that will be required in the Tests against ENG.

Can never leave out such a bowler.

Test cricket is different to playing 2nd division county teams .

We have seen Rahat leak runs. On the last tour of England, he released pressure a lot. I don't mind if he's selected because he is capable of picking up wickets but just worried that the pressure may get to him.

He is clearly in good rhythm at the moment. Who knows, he may have improved.

It's simply because others haven't been given a chance Sadaf was never played others who can do better than Rahat haven't been tried.
Looking aesthetic and threatening might just get you in the team it worked for Rahat Wahab Shafiq and others without the domestic returns to back up your selection for the team.

Rahat is an extremely poor bowler who completely lacks any mental strength at all. If a batsman starts targeting him, he crumbles.

You have disrespected the destroyer. Make sure you check there is no one under your bed at night.

You have no confidence in him yourself. He's been picked for a test series over performances in a T20 competition.

I have more confidence in him than I have in Abbas. He’s no Asif that he can trundle at 128kph and be lethal.

Abbas can do well in early season English conditions . Rahat has failed for the most part in international cricket.

Let’s see. Hasn’t inspired any confidence yet in his 2 outings in “early season” English conditions.

The comments here tell why an average keyboard warrior is not a selector. I'm glad we have proper people able to identify skill and talent, who selected him for this tour.

Mickey has a decent eye for bowlers. Wasim rates him too.

People suggesting Sadaf and Mir. Hilarious.

Much much better than trundler Abbas.Hopefully he proves all his haters wrong.

If the only options are Sadaf, Mir or Rahat then rest in peace to our test fast bowling resources.

We have alternatives, it is just that our test team selection lacks imagination. Where we should have taken Mir Hamza, we took Rahat Ali.

Yes, the sad reality is there isn't a pipeline full of quality pacers warming the bench.

All we have are the likes of Sadaf, Mir Hamza, Ehsan Adil, Zia.

Extremely poor bowlers. And ironically the most hyped ones here too.

As far as I recall, Wasim rated Sadaf too.

The extraordinary thing about Rahat is that he is reality proof. There is realistically speaking no more conclusive proof of a bowler's ability than their record after 20 something Tests.

That is all the evidence that you would and could ever need. Because if someone is failing after 20 Tests they should simply not be selected again. Case closed, shut, done with.

Topped with a 50-average-in-England- cherry.

Yet the Legend marches on.

Mir Hamza is a quality bowler. I dont know how and why you clubbed him with the rest. Usama Mir can also be turned into a test bowler if he works on his fitness and technique.

This would make more sense if a group of Pakistani selectors had not actually select Sadaf for the national team, in an ODI tour against Windies.

Pretty much any top 5 FC domestic bowler would be an excellent alternative to Rahat on this tour. Because in recent years Rahat is not even in that top 5.

It's Mickey against reality on this one sadly.

Such negativity FGS leave the guy alone!! Inzi & Mickey should be asked questions about selection not the players, they need our support for this tough tour .. c’mon lads make us proud #Rahat-rullaiyga

Abbas, Amir, Shadab, I hope, will play. Rahat is still a good bowler. Surely now it must be between him and Hassan Ali.

I would go with Hasan ahead of him, but depends on who has better form tbh. I think having Shadab in the team, there is a slight risk he might leak a few runs, so am tempted to go for the bowler I think would be more likely to be consistent of the two, which is Hasan imo. If it looks like there is seam movement, Rahat may get a game.

We will go with 4 pacers and Shadab.

Pakistan's fast bowling is not getting better as they're lacking a lot in terms of pace and skills.

Amir and Hasan are the only two with some pace but that too isn't over 140kph consistently where as other teams now have at least 3 bowlers who are over that consistently.

Rahat, Abbas are medium pacers who are 125-130kph bowlers who can get the odd ball to go over 130 when they put the extra effort.

LOL at saying rahat bowling in 125-130ks range he consistently bowls in the range of 135-143ks.Rahat is most skillful bowler present in the team.He actually swings the bowl both ways. No way Abbas the trundler should play instead of him.

Seems like his PSL form has got him selected for the current tour.

So a T20 pyjama League has been used to select a Test squad? :13:

This goes to show why our selection policies are fundamentally flawed...

Exactly rahat ability wise is one of the best bowlers in Pakistan cricket atm , he is much better than amir imo he got in Pakistan team on merit via consistent performance in all formats of domestic cricket

Yet amir ******* will never criticise amir for his lacklustre comeback and inability to pick wickets

I think you have to give a little credit to some posters on here. Fact is Rahat has a lovely action. He bowls at pace and swings it both ways.

But then so did Sami in the years 2003 till 2007 when he was a regular in the side. The problem is that having all the necessary bowling skills doesn’t automatically translate into having the ability to take wickets. For that something different is required...a certain nouse, swagger confidence and intelligence to put everything together. Sami also proved that LOI talent won’t automatically translate into success in tests. Wahab, Sami and Rahat are cut from the same cloth in this regard. They bowl absolute jaffas and are great in short stretches but just can’t be long term test bowlers. The fact that they bowl too many occassional loose balls mean that when an opposition player decides to drop anchor they don’t have any answers and start to huff and puff.

Credit to amir, he looks a shadow of himself but at least has some bowling intelligence.

I think Rahat will play but only because there isn’t a decent tried and tested replacement. Perhaps junaid will return soon.

Again a teenage obsession with speed. How quick are Anderson & Broad?
Abbas is perfect for English conditions, Hasan has to play which leaves it between Rahat & Amir. Rahat gets my vote. He looks far more dangerous and aggressive than Amir.

Yes I wish we had Marshall, Holding, Imran & the 2Ws but we don't.

Pakistan should have selected Mir Hamza for this tour. He is ideal bowler for English conditions.

Neither of them are very good test bowlers at the moment but I don’t think there is a lot to choose from.

Rahat's one of the most talented bowlers in Pakistan if not the most after Amir. Can bowl at speed, swing it both ways (even if I'm not sure he knows how he's doing it), is tall. In fact he could be more talented than Amir.

Talent doesn't make you good enough unfortunately, and he hasn't perfected the art of utilising all his skills effectively, and the bowling nous. Not necessarily intelligence, and most bowlers are bowling in rhythm, but somehow able to make the correct call at the correct time in a match. Some instinctively can do that/ Some less talented bowlers (e.g. Sadaf perhaps) probably have that.

If talent were good enough alone, Umar Akmal, Jamshed, Maqsood, Amin all would be in the LOI side (I struggle to think of test examples for batsmen as there aren't many). And guys like Fakhar or Sarfraz wouldn't have got a game.

The one thing I believe Rahat has in his favour is that correct me if I'm wrong, but Rahat hasn't worked with Azhar Mahmood or Mickey Arthur before. Perhaps different coaching staff might suit Rahat more. I like having him in the squad even if I wouldn't start him in England (makes more sense to go with abbas, Hasan and Amir atm), as just with him working with the trainers/coaches in the squad, could make him a better bowler and help realise his potential. So that when/if he is given a shot/needed, he can perform.

I fear it is far too late for Rahat. He is approaching 30 and has played 20 Tests. Correct me if I am wrong, but at no point in his career did he ever look like he was learning anything from anyone. It is far too much to hope that he would start now. And it is a poor investment, with very skilful bowlers who know how to take bundle of wickets waiting in the wings, ie Hamza.

Left arm version of Malcolm Sami, 1 good ball an over followed by a couple of boundary balls. Must have some relatives in PCB for him to be keep being selected.

could well be the highest wicket taker on this tour so lets not be too harsh on him!

I don't know why we keep picking him. He offers nothing at all and is incredibly boring to watch. Can't believe is is chosen ahead of Hasan Ali.

Don't understand the argumentation. Couldn't we agree to be harsh on him for being so absolutely mediocre for 20 Tests, but then if he turns it around dramatically for the next 3 we change our minds?

Today he was awful.

Could not land 2 balls in the same place.

He seems to have these days where he looks even worse than a club bowler.

Watching Rahat play test cricket makes me wish we'd as a cricketing board just give up on Test cricket altogether. Half the important boards don't want to play us, the other half don't really find us financially viable which leaves a grand total of one cricketing tour like England that's financially beneficial for us.

The talent reserves are at their lowest anyway. No fast bowlers - I'm talking about people who have the ability to bowl more than 20 overs and still be 140 plus rather than trundling at 120 kph and complaining about workload non stop. The less we talk about batting the better.

Let's just play a long psl - 3-4 months, and a lot of 5 t-20, 3 odi series with countries and let Rahat bowl his 4 overs in beast mode.

Every cloud has a silver lining At least this test has probably booked hasans place for the 2test series against england

Rahat, Kamran, who else?

Why do you support such trash?

And the irony is that you call out others for doing the same.

Is Junaid Khan injured or is he no longer considered for tests? I understand Usman Khan has just comeback from injury so he cannot be risked so early in a test match, but surely there have to be bowlers better than Rahat Ali.

I'm sorry to say but Mickey appears to be biased, Rahat is a very poor fielder too and if Mickey says "If you can't field you can't play for Pakistan" then why is Rahat playing? I still remember that dolly of catch of Shane Watson that he dropped in the 2015 WC QF at such a cruicial stage of the match.

He is an inferior version of RP Singh.

Even Cook smashed a hundred against this trundler at a Strike Rate of 80, 2.5 years go.

You shall always find a really undesrving player in Pakistan team. There are off course much better bowlers than Rahat in Pakistan. But you know the selectors of Pakistan team are not nonPakistani.

This is what happens when your selectors cant use

1. Laptop
2. Logic
3. Be bothered to go see actual domestic cricket and pick from PSL

The real Destroyer is back home in Multan and he sent his clone over because he did not feel Ireland worthy enough to participate against :rahat

Mickey in not biased, Its Inzi, the legendary chief selector. Rahat is his hometown boy, hence keep getting selected.

That should shut the door on him for the England series. Aamir, Abbass, Hassan, and Faheem should be the pace bowling attack in England.

You never know, he could come in at 60-9 and play a match winning innings :rahat

I wanted a couple of days to calm down and look at this more rationally, but honestly, my view remains the same.

That was the worst performance by a Pakistani test bowler that I can remember in recent memory. When you consider the opposition and the conditions it was truly disgusting.

I thought maybe Abdur Rauf in the boxing day test was worse, but no what Rahat dished out was beyond the pale.

His average is now almost 40. I wasn't against his selection, but honestly, he should be on a plane back to Pakistan. When it comes to mentality he is another Sami

He is a club bowler at best, god knows how he keeps been selected clear never bowls with any sort of plan with ball in hand,

Glad you agree with points i made along time ago with Rahat

Rahat over Wahab is definitely as big a blunder as playing only one spinner in the UAE. Don't really rate Wahab, but he is a no-brainer for this Test squad.

Rahat Ali, why?

Why persist with this man? He's clearly lacking in cricketing intelligence and a fast bowling mentality. Why keep giving him chances when we, the fans, can see he isn't very good?

What's also mind-boggling is some users on here still think he's good enough.

His recent interview he gave about swing bowling and how he mentioned the ball swings by itself and he doesn't do anything special, was :virat

Just because he swings the ball, doesn't mean he's good enough.

He was just downplaying the fact that unlike mere mortals he doesn't have to do anything special to swing the ball, probably didn't want others who worked so hard to perfect this art to feel bad.

He's not good enough. Before this tour,he last played a FC game in December 2016.He was selected based on his PSL performance.

Probably the selectors and the coaching staff like his innocent smiling face:rahat1, so they keep selecting him repeatedly. Both Inzy and Mickey Arthur seem to have a special liking for him for unknown reasons. The guy is certainly not fit for international cricket and is likely the most harmless fast bowler in world cricket right now.
