"We are playing these matches keeping Asia Cup in mind where we have to play India" : Faheem Ashraf

Faheem Ashraf speaking after his maiden five-fer:

"I try to hit the right areas while bowling. If there is swing then you can get wickets early but otherwise the aim is to contain and then attack the wickets"

"My seam position was looking good today and I was bowling from the other end. Saifi bhai decides which end who bowls from and everyone does so happily"

"In domestic cricket, Usman Shinwari is often my bowling partner as we play for the same department. For Pakistan, I have different bowling pairs, sometimes it's Usman, sometimes Hasan or Shadab"

"I am doing a lot of hard work on my batting and bowling both. The management tells me that if I bat, I should try to play long innings to get confidence. We have big matches leading up to the World Cup which is what we're looking to. Similarly if I give good performances in bowling, that will benefit me in future"

"Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe is not an easy team, no team is an easy opponent in international cricket. The coach also emphasises that we should be preparing ourselves for the Asia Cup etc. and we should think we're playing against those teams"

"In variation, Ajju bhai tells me in practice to work on it as I have a quick action and variations will benefit me"

"I try to bowl stump to stump and hit the right areas"

Quotes from press conference:

"I would like to thank Allah, my household and Ajju bhai who is the main person behind our bowling attack. He always gives us confidence and tells us to enjoy our bowling and because of him I've taken my first 5fer in ODIs"

"I try to hit the right areas and bowl stump to stump"

"In the last two matches, I was padded up to come in at #4 but our team is doing so well that I haven't got a chance"

"Since we came to Zimbabwe, our focus is on playing the first and last game with the same intensity. If we are leading 3-0 or 4-0, we don't want to become lazy and we want to play every match with a high level of intensity"

"I don't think there will be too many changes for the team as Hasan Ali was rested today due to his neck. If there's any changes, he might come back into the playing XI"

"We are playing keeping the Asia Cup in mind where we have to play India etc., after that we have to play Australia and New Zealand. We are keeping the World Cup in focus as well. This Zimbabwe team is a good team, no international team is bad. We are playing these matches as we would play matches against Australia/England or New Zealand"

"It's cricket and there are ups and downs, you can't take any match lightly. If Zimbabwe is losing 3-0 then they will try to come back hard in the 4th match. We don't take any team lightly regardless of their ranking"

"It's true that we are a very close team and we back each other all the time. Since the CT, we play as one unit and support each other and are happy with each other's performances. That's why we are winning matches in all formats"

Rana would be the best/second best bowler in most LOI teams in the world.

Hopefully he gets to play at 4 next game and also plays a big innings.

Added presser quotes.

He said he was scheduled to bat at #4 in both of these last 2 games but didn't get a chance. :(

Yeah just read that very encouraging to see. Hopefully we bat first next game so he gets an opportunity. Mickey clearly rates him.

Dear Mamoon, did u even read what he's saying? A genuine question actually.

He is counting big teams which they'll play. He also counted NZ and AUS. Since India is the only big team in the upcoming Asia Cup, he counted them and ignored others.

Also Asia cup comes before Aus and NZ series.

Reference to the next series where they have to play stronger teams.. India being a stronger team.

Quite an unfair statement by you

Totally expected you to pick on that. Its a half quote and the full quote talks about the Australia, SA series and WC.

But when has logic worked for you.

Pakistan needs to manage his work load, now he plays every format and bowl pretty much full quota in every match. We don't need to break him down like Amir. We would need him in every test and Odi from now on, no need to play him in last 2 ZIM ODIs...

That is why Yamin and Shaheen should have been selected for this tour.

Shaheen definitely, I want him to play 20 odd ODIs before WC, we need him for WC, my worry is he is not in the plans of Inzi and Micky, we need that variety and X factor in the attack...

Personally, I don't consider Yamin as international class, at age 27, he still bowls at 125-130K clicks, way below international standards. We don't want to go back to the Anwar Ali, Bhatti types, now we have enough in the tank to raise the bar...Maybe Tallat could have been given a chance, but still genuine seaming allrounder we have only one. Lets hope we get more in coming years, till than we need to protect him and not run him down the ground...

Yamin is mainly a batsman who can bowl and we did not utilized him properly by playing him as a bowler. He should have been selected for Zimbabwe along with Hussain Talat so that our main players could get some rest.

Naa he needs batting time in ODIs.

Title was chosen due to Asia Cup being the next series for Pakistan, and India was mentioned.

Anyone who reads the full quotes will see that England, Australia and New Zealand are also mentioned, i.e. all the top teams as we have series coming up against those sides in the near future as well.

How good is Mickey Arthur? What a coach!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant stuff from Mickey - pushing for high standards from the youngsters and showing proactive thinking by wanting to give batting practice for an out of form Fahim Ashraf against weak opposition.

Under previous management the sainted seniors would've missed no opportunity to pad their stats.

Waqar was better according to some experts.

These experts will have you believe Waqar was the Pep Guardiola of cricket.

They will say beating Zimbabwe is no big deal, and yes it's a highly weakened opposition. Yet on our last tour in 2015 - we lost an ODI to them in a run chase where we were 76-6. Our top four in that match was Azhar Ali, Bilal Asif, Mohammad Hafeez and Asad Shafiq !

India is the team to beat now. It's got nothing to do with inferiority, its good to aim for the best in the business.

Well Malik had that chase didn't he? It was wrongly given in favor of Zimbabwe after being washed out with Malik left stranded on 98

I tell you what this couldn't be any further from the truth.

Before the 5fer against awful opposition this guy had less than a wicket a game. Now that he's found batsmen who are even worse than his bowling you claim he's the best/second best bowler in most LOI sides. Are you for real?!

Reality Check: Wouldn't make any of the 5 of the top 6 ODI sides in the world - Australia, England, India, South Africa and NZ.

You wouldn't know who this is but I've followed your posting patterns for a while ;)

You clearly haven’t been stalking my posting patterns very well then. I’ve been saying this for months.

Another lame rubbish tournament.. Got sick with these Asia cup tournament.

India and Pakistan better play a tri-series with one of South Africa, New Zealand or England.

Just ignore the minnows and treat it as India vs Pakistan series. There are guaranteed two matches and potentially three between Ind-Pak in the Asia Cup.

I would really like to know exactly what in this series is helping us to prep playing vs India

I am guessing quality wise India and Zimbabwe at par. So if you play against Zimbabwe, its same as playing against India.

Three matches vs pak, most of indian fans will prefer it over ind vs eng odi series.

So there is a possibility of 2 india vs pakistan matches in the asia cup including the final. Can't wait. :kakmal

How come 3? 2 at max.

One in the group stage, and other if both reach finals.

6 teams in 2 groups
Top 2 qualify from both qualify for next round, a round robin between these 4 teams and then a final.

To my best knowledge this is the format of upcoming Asia Cup

I don't think so. All 6 teams play 5 games each in a round Robin format, and then a final between top 2 teams.

Instead of a another round robin between the top 4 teams, we should have a semi final and then a final.

Why does cricket always need to take the long way. With this current format the tournament will be longer and there will be more dead rubbers.

Just keep the tournament short and sweet with more meaningful matches.

Same goes for the World Cup. 9 matches per team is a dead rubber bore fest.

To me Asia Cup should only consist 4 top Asian teams

Other Asain teams should play separate tournament, Asia Cup second division

Top team from 2nd Div should play next Asia Cup and team which finishes at bottom in 1st Div should be relegated to 2nd Div

ya faheem is a average player but his good thing is he is working on his self for improvement which is hinted for a grate

Nothing gives me greater happiness than hearing Faheem was supposed to come in at 4

And who will decide which are the top 4 teams? For me Afghanistan is a better team than current Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

At least ACC sees some sense in these global (or regional) tournaments being an opportunity for lesser experienced nations to showcase their talents. And its not that the tournaments gets extended due to two extra teams, the entire tournament takes hardly 12, 13 days.

This Asia cup will be the right tournament for Pakistan to shut the mouth of all naysayers.

Afghanistan is nowhere near ban in odis.
Ban have proper batsmen and a very good allrounder, afg is full of tullebaaz who can be successful only in t20s.

Rankings will decide top 4 teams but that is needed only for one edition as top team from 2nd Division enters into 1st division and team which finishes 4th in 1st division will relegate into 2nd Division and the cycle will continue.

No no no to this. World Cup is already limiting participation for lower ranked teams, let's not restrict Asia Cup too.

Asia Cups are the only times we'll get to see fixtures like Pakistan vs Afghanistan.

Good to hear management are drumming this message into his head.
