Azhar Ali when asked by PP in presser about absence of a fast-bowling all-rounder in the Pak lineup vs England:

"Of course, all the top Test sides in the world have an all-rounder in the shape of a fast-bowler or a medium pacer which is very handy in all conditions; We are also trying with Faheem Ashraf who is here with us to get him ready for Tests as soon as possible; This is a big opportunity for him as there are very few all-rounders in Pakistan who can bowl at medium-pace; So it will be very important for us in the future to develop such all-rounders"

So the question is

Why is he in the squad if not good enough for Test after 5 weeks of training?

I guess for lack of a better option. They needed to pick a medium pacer who can bat, between the 2-3 options in domestic they went with a youngster in Faheem since at least he can be developed as opposed to someone like Amer Yamin.

If Fahim has been unable to perform after 5 weeks in England in helpful conditions, both with the ball as well as with the bat, it speaks more to his ability than it does to squad selection. I imagine if Faheem had turned up even a little bit in the practice games, he would currently be sitting in the 16 man squad instead of Kashif Bhatti or Sohail Khan.

Think this should be the end of him for now.

You've been trying to get Faheem ready for international cricket for 3 years.

He doesn't look ready for club cricket.

Getting faheem ready has become a joke, dudes just not at that level. Hes not quality. Better we start looking elsewhere.

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali has backed star batsman Babar Azam to underline his credentials as one of the best in the world in England this month.

Babar, 25, is a fast growing phenomenon across all formats, sitting top of the International Cricket Council’s Twenty20 rankings, third in the the one-day equivalent and sixth among Test players.

If anything the latter placing does him a disservice, with a towering average of 65.5 since the start of 2018 proving his increasing dominance in the five-day game.

He will go into the #raisethebat series opener on Wednesday as the tourists’ prize scalp and, while Azhar has no intention of ramping up the pressure, he has no doubt that Babar’s reputation will only be enhanced after three Tests.

Asked if the coming weeks might see his name installed alongside Steve Smith and Virat Kohli, the gold standard of modern Test batsmen, Azhar said: “I think he is right up there already.

“People are thinking and talking about it. He is just hungry for runs and I think if he keeps doing that he will be up there for quite a long time.

“His performances have improved massively in Test matches over the last year or so. Firstly he was performing really well in white-ball cricket and people thought he was only a white-ball player but he took on that challenge and played with a lot of freedom and flare.

“As a captain I want him to play the way he wants to. Just to relax and play his game and I’m sure if he does that he will go massively up the rankings in Test matches as well.

“He is a very important player for us but I would like him to be free from any pressure and just enjoy his game.”

Pakistan named a 16-man squad for the match at Emirates Old Trafford, leaving themselves a number of options around the balance of the side.

Even so it would be a surprise to see them veer from the expected plan of three seamers – fiery youngsters Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi, seamer Mohammad Abbas and spin duo Yasir Shah and Shadab Khan.

Naseem (17) and Afridi (20) have a combined age lower than England’s record wicket-taker James Anderson, who turned 38 last week, but Azhar is confident they can earn the right to be ranked alongside the country’s greatest pairings. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis remain the pinnacle, but the promise of their current heirs is considerable.

“They are very talented, obviously not as experienced as some of the bowling attacks that have come to England in the past, but potentially they are right up there,” said the skipper.

37 Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah's combined age, younger than James Anderson.
“Naseem is a young talent who came up and played Test cricket from nowhere, but I’ve been with him in the first-class team and have played a few Test matches with him now.

“He’s impressed all of us and is in our number one bowling attack. He is young and talented, and over time he will get the experience he needs. In terms of his potential, he is very threatening and hopefully he will be very good for us in this series.”

Pakistan squad for the first Test: Azhar Ali (c), Babar Azam (vc), Abid Ali, Asad Shafiq, Fawad Alam. Imam-ul-Haq, Kashif Bhatti, Mohammad Abbas, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Naseem Shah, Sarafaraz Ahmed (wk), Shadab Khan, Shaheen Afridi, Shan Masood, Sohail Khan, Yasir Shah.

Faheem is good for selfies only. Only see him doing that in every cricketers photo.

Fahim is a decent bowler but not a very good batsman at international lever for some reason

The Faheem project seems to be a long term. But yet to reap any rewards and honestly of what I have seen of him, he isn't worth it. Hasan Mohsin would probably be more wiser of a project to invest in. 22 years of age, decent batter, bowls at good pace and tremendous fitness but could use some bulk.

Pakistan captain Azhar Ali praised his deputy Babar Azam ahead of the first Test of the three-match series against England at Old Trafford in Manchester; saying the latter is "already up there" in the elite league of superstars Virat Kohli and Steve Smith.

"Experts of the game are talking about it but I know he is not thinking about these comparisons and is just hungry for runs. If he continues that he will be up there for quite a long time," said Azhar comparing him to the Indian captain and Australian run machine.

Babar's performance in the five matches he has played over the past 12 months bears testament to his skipper's statement- the 25-year-old batsman has scored 615 runs at a mind-boggling average of 102.5.

"His performance has improved massively in Tests over the last year or so. When people started thinking that he is a white-ball specialist, he took that as a challenge and began playing with a lot of freedom and flair," Azhar added.

Azhar is aware that England might be better placed as the side has spent more time on the field since the resumption of international cricket but also added that his side is well prepared going into the match starting Wednesday. "The preparation for this Test match went well and for the past month we have been working really hard... Yes, you cannot replicate Test cricket in the practice games and sometimes you'll have to be the one who'll play second. England have played three Test matches, which is obviously good for them but that is no excuse in international cricket," said the 35-year-old.

It has often been said that overseas batsmen tend to dread the English conditions. Although Azhar concurs with the statement, he feels the presence of experienced players and coaches in the side will help them tackle that adversity. "English conditions are quite tough for batting. With the Dukes ball and the weather... it swings around. But we have had that experience in the past. Babar, Asad (Shafiq) and I too have played in England before. We will try and perform and use that experience to our good. We have players and coaches like Younus Khan (batting coach) and Misbah-ul-Haq (head coach and chief selector) too who have played a lot of cricket in England," he said.

Azhar is confident about his young bowling unit as well and believes they have enough firepower to rattle the host. He sounded particularly optimistic about the 17-year-old Naseem Shah and called him his "number one choice."

"Yeah, they are very talented. But obviously, they are not as experienced as some of Pakistan's other bowling attacks in the past. Potentially, they are right up there and I am sure they are very much ready because it has been really hard coming out of the lockdown and getting ready in five or six weeks' time... He (Naseem) is a young talent. He came up and played Test cricket from nowhere but I've been with him in the first-class team. He's impressed all of us and is our No 1 choice in bowling attack. Hopefully, he will be very good for us this series."

England v Pakistan: We have prepared very well, says Pak captain Azhar Ali

Pakistan Test captain Azhar Ali said that the players are raring to go after their long break enforced by the coronavirus pandemic. Pakistan take on England in a three-match Test series starting on Wednesday. This will be followed by a three-match T20I series and the team has been in the country since late June.

“All players are excited to play the series. Covid-19 is there and for the moment we have to carry on with it,” Azhar told reporters on the eve of the first Test which will be played at Old Trafford.
“We are lucky that we will be playing cricket which is what we love the most. A lot of talk is going on about cricket happening in these tough times but I feel that the best thing is that we wanted to play and we are now getting to that. Credit to ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) and PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) for arranging this series.

“We have prepared very well with whatever facilities we had with us and ensured that no player gets left behind and gets frustrated. We enjoyed the camp a lot.”

Azhar said the team is motivated by their Test performances in recent years in England. Pakistan have not lost a Test series in England since 2010.

“Challenges is something you have to take as a cricketer and England tours are always difficult with or without Covid. But we have performed well in our last few series here and that is a big source of motivation. We will be looking to repeat and upstage that,” he said.
The 35-year-old admitted that the visitors’ pace battery may be inexperienced but is confident of them performing well considering the talent that they have.

“Our fast bowing attack is inexperienced but you have seen their talent and how they have bowled in the last few series. I think of myself as very lucky as a captain that we got bowlers like these who can threaten any team in Test cricket. You can’t buy experience, that comes with playing matches but there is a lot of capability there.

“Our batting experience is better. There is Shan Masood, Asad Shafiq and I have all played a lot. Babar Azam has gained a lot of experience now. As a team our combination is pretty good.”

Azhar has a MASSIVE part to play if he wants Babar to play free from pressure.
Azhar needs to bat for long enough to ensure babar comes to the wicket at a reasonable time and not at 10-2

Kick him out already. He is really useless.Amir yamin would have been much useful than this joke of a cricketer.

So if they are getting him ready, why's he not in the 16-man squad named today?

Hasan Mohsin has decent pace? IIRC he was bowling 110 kph outswingers at the ‘16 U-19 WC.

Fahim is one of the guys who's usually just good in t20 leagues.
bowls a good spell here and there and scores a good 20 25 once in a while matches.

hasan should focus on batting. And what pace you are refering to.He bowls at pace of gangully at its peak and has physique of 12 year old boy.

Officially, Hasan Ali is 6 months younger than Faheem and I think he has much better potential with bat - at least he can connect properly with bat swing and bat comes straight from his high back lift. If they can work a bit on his shot selection and defense, he can easily out bat Faheem, a far better bowler as well. Instead of developing Faheem Ashraf into a Test "all-rounder", Misbah & Waquar should invest that energy to develop Hasan Ali as first change pacer and No. 8 batsman.

12 Years back, Sohail Khan had much higher ceiling - he was genuinely quick, around 6'3"/6'4" and decent batting prospect - he wasn't given enough chances and now they are over compensating him at this "mature" age. Then the same "effort" could have been given to Wahab, Amir & Yasir - each of them had decent batting potential to develop on. Particularly, this guy Yasir should have been put into task to improve his batting up to 19 -23 average level. As a specialist Test player, he was given a Cat A central contract for his 6-7 Tests/year and yet guy moved to opposite direction with bat - last AUS tour gave a glimpse of what a Test cricketer he could have been with hard work ethics and ambition.

........... now they are trying it with Faheem Ashraf:(

I've been away from the cricket scene for a bit. This useless guy is again in the running for a first eleven spot????

Can't bat, can't bowl. Still in the running for a spot in the side.

Typical Pakistani selection decisions.

At least Faheem can bowl.

Misbah is selecting Shadab (who got hit for 8 sixes in the warm-up) over Fawad.

Faheem was probably the second best bowler in the last match.

With that crucial 45 by Shadab, surely he is starting to edge out Faheem for that all-rounder position.

He should have got himself ready first before talking about others.
