ISLAMABAD: Former skipper and batting legend Javed Miandad on Wednesday again advocated hiring a local coach, as only a player well-acquainted with the country’s cricketing system can develop a strong team to regain once owned status.

Miandad was of the view that current coach has failed to deliver after Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinals of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, thus changes must be made in team and coaching staff to bring the game on right track.

“If greats like Sir Viv Richards or Sir Ian Terence Botham were brought to the task then one can understand what caliber they can bring in Pakistan cricket, otherwise foreign coaches cannot carry on with our players,” he said.

Miandad said Richards or Ian can coach players of what they had learned by playing on the field, otherwise coaches who just do courses and start coaching cannot improve the team.

“A person, who has played cricket practically all his life, can coach players better than the one who just sits on a computer and analyses things scientifically,” he said and added our local coaches who have been big names in the game must be hired for the job.

When asked about reports on Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) thinking to hand over reins of National One Day team’s stewardship to anyone from Muhammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim and Babar Azam, Miandad said players who had enjoyed their prime must not be given the job.

“PCB must set their priority straight of how to improve with cricket and must decide whether they want to go back or move forward,” he said adding that ” we need a fresh start with a new face to lead the team”.

Miandad said departmental cricket was the only solution to improve Pakistan cricket. “Players have to feed their families and for that they need jobs which only the departments can provide,” he said.

He said PCB must constitute 11 to 12 teams from the lot of available players and must pitch them in back-to-back national tournaments. “The final 15 must be picked for these teams,” he said . PCB selectors must monitor each and every team themselves, he added.

That comment alone shows how pathetic these guys are. YOU EITHER FEED YOUR FAMILIES OR PLAY CRICKET. The just look at it as an employment not a profession.

Sounds like the legend is throwing his hat into the ring :)

Miandad would actually be very good with young players but his obsession with the $ means that he sees that sort of role as an insult. He just doesnt have the man management skills to be able to bring out the best out players not as smart as him.

Hiring should not be done based on nationality but rather merit.

1. The correct question to ask is who is the best available coach that will provide the highest ROI in terms of their compensation requested.

2. Infrastructure should be established to produce world class sports coaches which is the best way to ensure competence in technique from the grass roots level up.

PCB can put in an as many good english words in their ads but the fact is that selection of coach will always be based upon a subjective assessment of the committee tasked with this job - their own personal likes/dislikes will come into play

But what Miandad fails to recognise here is that those who have superior analytical skills in respect of cricket, will have a better grasp of identifying talent. Playing cricket at the highest level and succeeding at it merely shows you have superior technical skill set.

Unfortunately in Pakistan you won't be able to find a high profile ex-Pakistan cricketer who has the analytical aptitude to succeed. For this reason it's either Bazid Khan or a foreigner who needs to be given the Chief Selector role and if you want to replace Mickey Arthur (who should be retained as he's the best man for the job), I would not want to see another incompetent ex-player, who is in the same mould of Waqar, MHK and etc given this role either.

He thinks too highly of himself without admitting that he was an average batsman and total failure of a coach.

My old P.E teacher would be a better coach than anyone in Pakistan.

Miandad should just move on from cricket, he's had his fun with the Pak team

He thinks too highly of himself without admitting that he was an average batsman and total failure of a coach.

whoa there, he may be many things and may be a failure as a coach but in no way was he an average batsman, he was one of the best in the world at that time.

I'd much rather we carry on with Mickey than give it to so some local coach who uses dehati methods and has no care or regard for data analytics.

This same Maindad once said cricket is not played on laptop what is the use of analysis.

He sounds like the Trump of Pakistan. Yet another anti-immigrant statement.

The facts are that coaches need to be qualified to do their job. Great coaches are rarely former players. Mianded thinks he is a great coach. From his time as team coach, it's clear that he simply is not.

What Miandad needs to understand is that a person's skin colour is not a factor in job selection, let alone when the job is national team coach. The best man should always get the job and as much as Miandad does not like to hear it, he certainly is not the best man - not even close.

I have no doubt Pakistan produces the worst coaches, yet I know at least three regulars on here who want Mohsin Khan to take over the role.

When you tell these folks ^ we need an overseas coach, they will tell you, "you love white skin too much" or "just because so and so is a foreigner, doesn't make them a better coach".

Truth of the matter is our coaches aren't competent enough to coach the A side, let alone the first XI.

Our ex cricketers should shut up. With most of them having had there chance in one capacity or another they simply are unable to move on from the Sport. No one will be asking Miandad who the next coach will be. He was hardly great coach himself.

Pakistan should only hire foreign coaches. They're apolitical, not nosy, give personal space to their players, are professional and don't lobby through media. They also give insight and advice from a western perspective.

Yeah right!! Geoff Lawson and Richard Pybus turned us in to world beaters! Then hardly any off our players can understand a word of what a foreign coach says. Sadly Bob Woolmer is another example of what it can lead to.

Miandad needs to become Pakistani coach. He's a legend and can take Pakistani team to new heights, I hope PCB appoints him soon )

The problem with some local coaches is that they are prone to leaking dressing room information and also carry a lot of baggage with them.

If the coach must be a Pakistani ex-cricketer, here are the criteria he must meet (just like any foreign coach.)
1. Retired with grace.
2. On his own terms i.e. when still good at his game.
3. Carries no baggage, Courted no controversies.
4. Is fit and energetic to do the high pressure job.
5. Has a winning mindset.
6. Has demonstrated coaching success in places like U-19, PSL, QA trophy etc.

Maybe Misbah. Ticks all the boxes, although his brand of cricket in LOIs is dreadful. In tests too, he didn't take a winning mentality to Australia or South Africa.

Miandad ticks many of these boxes except for no 6.

Anyone else?

Didn't Miandad play 96 world cup?

He thinks too highly of himself without admitting that he was an average batsman and total failure of a coach.

Miandad won us our one and only ODI World Cup. His foolish statements aside, Miandad was one of the very best batsmen Pakistan has ever produced.

I keep reading and watching these ex-players on tv bemoaning foreign coaches, do these idiots think everything will be fixed by hiring a Pakistani-based coach?

The issues are internal, the problem are deep. No one man can change the side for the better but constant and consistent work needs to be done on our domestic infrastructure and we need to improve the basics of what we've deemed to be fine for decades.

Pakistan cricket is at its best with either a foreign coach or a dummy coach (Inti type), who doesn't interfere at all and is just there as a father-figure and who doesn't get involved in tactics or selection matters.

Miandad ticks no. 2? Really?

No, it’s the great captaincy of Imran Khan along with good bowling of Wasim, little cameo of Inzi and tuktuking of Miandad.
As a coach he was super failure and got sacked 4 times.
He gave us ****** batsman called Faisal Iqbal who is no where near to Imam ul Haq
Didn’t do anything but accept fat money from PCB when he was the defector of PCB

Pakistan Need Practical Trainers Not Laptop Coaches: Former Captain Javed Miandad

ISLAMABAD, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - APP - 31st Jul, 2019 ) :Former captain Javed Miandad believes that Pakistan need practical trainers and not laptop coaches to meet the challenges of international cricket.

"You may hire coaches at the district level. These coaches may use laptops or other digital coaching methodologies for the strength and conditioning of our upcoming players. But at the highest level we need someone, who can train them on the ground and remove their weaknesses," he told APP on Wednesday.

Miandad did not speak against the usage of advance module of cricket, but was of the view that ground realities should not be ignored. "The ground reality is that majority of our players have rural background. They come from villages and rural towns where they still don't have access to computers or laptops. Their upbringing as professionals has not been done like that. Now, if you will try to train them that way, they'll not be able to adapt to the change," he added.

He said that players could not be produced at the highest level rather it was at the junior level that they should be given proper coaching and groomed to become future stars.

"True, the digital coaching has worked a lot in foreign countries. But there is a hell of difference between their systems and that of ours. That is why I say we need trainers at the senior level and not the coaches." The former great cricketer, who also served as Pakistan team coach for three times in the past said someone like Wasim Akram, who had played a lot of international cricket and done well during his playing days could better tune-up players at the national level. "Look the world is availing expertise of Wasim Akram and our other players as they tell their players practically through demonstrations how to remove faults and improve performance.

Their tips are doing wonders. So, if other nations are availing their expertise why can't we ourselves benefit from our former greats cricketers?" Miandad asked.

He said that foreign coaches did not have real interest in players' performance. "They'll at once jump to take the credit if players perform well under them. But if they (players) figure poorly in some international event, they put the blame on players, saying they (players) are unwilling to learn and improve their skills." "You can hire services of a foreign professional coach if you don't have experts in that field. But if you have more competent people at home for that slot than it would not be fair to rope in a foreigner." He said if the Pakistan Cricket Board felt it was necessary to appoint foreign coaches then it should appoint them at the district level because that was the best stage to start using ultramodern methodologies. "If you feel their appointment is imperative then send them to the cricket academies. Don't make your own greats players to work under them at the highest level," he added.

Miandad also asked the board not to make any decision in haste to change Pakistan team's captain. "I believe Sarfraz has learnt a lot as captain. Now when he is fully trained to lead the national side for important future assignments it will not be a wise to change him.

"A junior player may be made vice-captain of the national side and groomed under Sarfraz to take the responsibility of captaincy sometime later in the future."/395

I think we should allow Miandad to coach Pakistan for the fifth time. He has learned important lessons from the four times he was fired by PCB earlier. Hopefully fifth time lucky.

Not the clown wasim please.

Appointing Wasim would be nepotism.

1. He is never coached an international team
2. He was implicated in match fixing

He is not the type of person you appoint in a position of trust.

Don't think Wasim Akram is interested in coaching Pakistan. He never expressed any real interest.

We need Miandad and that chap who Trump was praising when they met last week to both influence Wasim and convince him he’s got to take the job, I would get Wasim Akram as head coach and fast bowling coach, Dean Jones as batting and fielding coach , they could make a good combo.

ISLAMABAD, Oct 15 (APP):Batting legend Javed Miandad has urged Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to establish a variety of pitches at different stadiums around the country, to prepare players for the 2020 ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup.

“Pitches should provide equal opportunities to batters and bowlers and should allow all disciplines in the game to flourish. PCB must prepare quality pitches around the country to prepare the players in all three departments for the World Cup,” Miandad told APP.

Pakistan team failed in all three departments when was whitewashed by Sri Lanka 0-3 in the Twenty20 home series.
