"We truly believe in this team and the players and the team believes in me" : Misbah-ul-Haq

Australia v Pakistan: Misbah-ul-Haq hopes tourists can end series with fireworks.

Pakistan's resolve to move on from the disappointments of Brisbane and Melbourne was built in the hotel room of Misbah-ul-Haq on New Year's Eve.

"Some of the guys with the families just gathered in my room because luckily I got the view of the Harbour Bridge," the tourists' veteran captain said on Monday.

"We just watched the fireworks with all the kids and had dinner there. We enjoyed that and had a chat and after that everybody was relaxed. We just throw everything that happened in the bin and just think about the new year, 2017. Now it looks like everybody is fresh and ready for this Test match. The two matches [against Australia] in 2016 are gone. We're just concentrating on 2017."

Misbah himself enters the third Test in a far more optimistic frame of mind than the aftermath of Australia's series-clinching victory in the Boxing Day Test, when he said he was contemplating retiring immediately.

Only days later, that is now off the cards for the 42-year-old, for this week anyway.

"Nobody was having any doubt that I should leave or I have to leave," Misbah said. "Whatever I said, that was only because we thought and I thought that we were a far better team than what happened in Melbourne, the way we played the two Tests matches and that was all because of that …t he frustration, the disappointment was because of that.

"We truly believe in this team and the players and the team believes in me. And that's why we've been so successful in the past. So I have no doubt in my mind at the moment in terms of whatever I said in that press conference that was, you could say, frustration and disappointment. But if you look at the side, neither the player, neither the coaching staff nor me have any doubts about all this."

The shame for the tourists about the last few weeks, having come so close to a come-from-behind miracle at the Gabba and then been over-powered dramatically by Australia when the second Test seemed destined for a draw, is that the conditions at the SCG were always likely to be the most suitable of the three venues for them this summer. Unfortunately, they have arrived in Sydney with the series no longer alive.

Pakistan did not announce an XI on Monday but are contemplating replicating Australia by including two spinners, with left-arm orthodox Mohammad Nawaz in line to replace seamer Sohail Khan.

"It's not that if Australia put two spinners we don't have to put two spinners, it's about how we think about the conditions," Misbah said.

"We will definitely go for it if we think on the last day the pitch is going to do a little bit for the spinners."

He is waiting for the storm and anger to subside and for the PCB to request him to continue. He has done it so many times in the last 7 years, he wont leave till someone kicks him out for good.

who is gonna retire if he does enjoy the luxury of being invited by prime ministers...

A bit over the top reaction here...this will be Misbahs last test.
Mark my words.

Younis Khan, a selfish playert hat he is, will walk off the field as soon as hes completed 10k runs...I can just imagine, tv screens flashing his landmark and hes hurrying off the field...lol.

If they are looking for second spinner within a 4 man bowling attack than I would think Asghar would be a better option. In the PSL, a lot of batsmen seemed to be stretching out when facing him, which is a sign that he gets the ball to really dip.

But if they do decide to play him, then Misbah can't just use him as a purely defensive option.

With two spinners, his inclination might be to use the newbie as defensive and yasir as aggressive. that might be wrong considering all the left handers in the australian team.

The one time in the PSL he bowled quite defensively, was when he was bowling against Cameron Delport. He was looking to cramp him for room. But he did not look the same bowler, bowling in that style.

Another u turn on retirement by so called gentleman of Pakistan. For God sake u r 42 . He should have retired after last test & give some exposure to youngster in Australian conditions.

his reflexes are really down due to his age which is exposed on tough tours to NZL and AUS...

if he continues to stay, will be humiliated more... Better to quit than being begged to and eventually kicked out...

Misbah could have used a offspinner here. Selectors really picked 2 sla's?

If Asghar replaces Yasir and Amir averages under 26 in this match and takes 5-6 wickets than Pakistan has a chance.

There is no need for Nawaz as either a batsman or a bowler or as an allrounder. Otherwise his Test Career may end after one Test only if Inzamam (Consistent CS) calls it a day after WI tour.

Sohail Khan does not need to be replaced. It's time for Wahab to be benched.

Also if unofficially 35 Irfan was selectable considering 2019 WC than why Sohail wasn't selectable as a bowling allrounder at 33 ? Rahat is a terrible bowler and a terrible fielder and batsman.

Lets go bold guys...
