India was completely out of the match, but his 92 was like a big 100 today. Still not finished as LOI cricketer. The best thing for him was to defend this total without Ashwin.

SA must be kicking themselves, had a great opportunity to go 2-0 up.

MSD still has a year or two left in ODI cricket. But today was an exception where he performed. He has been failing badly for almost 3 years now.

Problem is there is no one ready to replace MSD in ODI cricket. Samson should replace MSD in T20's.

Great players have the ability to dig in deep in their most vulnerable moment and produce magical performances.

Today's victory can be called Dhoni's victory.

But his time is up.

This is a briliant flicker more than a regular occurence (the same we see with all great players).

indians should be ashamed of themselves. He was the only person who won the match for them today. Such ungrateful people they have in india. smh!

Yup he has been absolutely horrible in the last 3 years in ODI...He is there only because there is no one to replace him ...He is only averaging 58 at a SR of 91 in the last 3 years with over 2200 runs. Obviously India needs batsmen averaging 100 in ODI and there are bradman's waiting in the wings to replace him. We don't deserve a player like Dhoni, I hope he retires.

This is the first full game that I have watched with all the intensity after the world cup, which may just reflect how away I have stepped from cricket. It was due to MS Dhoni´s inability to finish off the last game (which, again, I actually did not watch) and the criticism by the media and the questioning by experts before the series and after that match that made me watch this game with immense passion.

And it was worth it! The usual collapse, the usual rescue act by Captain Cool and then a brilliant display by the bowlers. I can mention many great innings by the man from the recent years that pulled India out of similar holes but they so often resulted in defeats, but this is sweeter than many of those due to him ending up on the winning side, and hopefully will soon be handed the Man of the Match award too.

Well done Dhoni! Thank you for such great memories for me as a fan. Keep going!

drop Rahane.. Or Move him to 5 and see he can successful or not..let MSD bat at no.4.. He need times to settled.. plus he's much better strike rotator than Rahane..

His time is not up. Its just that his strengths have changed. A bit like how Tendlya turned from a destroyer during his peak to a an accumulator.

Instead of a finisher and a smasher, he has become a no.6

However good Rahane might be, Kohli is better at 3 than Rahane. So, we need to remove Rahane and find a hitter at 6.

For someone like me who has moved on from cricket so much, this was a perfect game. One batsman doing well, pacing the innings, producing late-hitting, getting his side to an okay-ish total which then gets defended with so many twists and turns. This is how cricket used to be some years ago:)....

Anyway, I am hopeful, and have been, ever since the rules had been changed recently to pull the balance back a bit between bat and ball.

Indeed. This was the perfect match. Bat and ball fighting each other. If you bat well, you can score runs, if you bowl well you get wickets. 100s are not being scored by every Tom Dick and Harry. Only special innings score 100s (or 90s in this case) and good bowling gets you wickets.

How many of them are Not outs?

I am not a Dhoni hater. He is still the best keeper for India in ODI's by a mile. No one can replace him in ODI format. But he is not a finisher and big hitter anymore. He needs loads of time to settle in before he can launch his array of shots.

MSD should either bat at No.4 or just retire gracefully. He should completely give up on T20's. Its not his cup of tea.

Credit where it is due. He willed India to victory today.

Every great player has the ability to roll back the years every once in a while even when they are past their best. Having said that, I think MS can play ODI for another couple of years but he should retire from T20s right now.

He should stay till WT20. He showed again how valuable his captaincy is, especially in Indian conditions.
After that he can retire from T20s.

As for ODIs, bat at 4, and replace Rahane with a smasher/finsiher at 6.

Rahane needs to be kicked out of the team ASAP. Move Kohli to 3 again, I don't even care if Dhoni moves up the order or a proper replacement for Rahane (other than Rayudu) comes in. Rahane needs to go.

As for Dhoni, I honestly felt bad for him in the previous ODI. He looked like a shell of his former self and I wished he would recapture some of his magic. He's a legend and his innings today was very fitting.

However, no matter what people say about his stats these past 3 years, you have your own eyes to judge. Dhoni has been regressing, his power-game is non-existant these days and he's not half as dangerous he used to be.

Greatest finisher of all time.

One of the greatest ODI batsmen of all time.

When going gets tough, Dhoni over ABD every day of the week, including sunday.

If MSD is going to play T20's, he should open or play 1 down.

Ideally, i want
Rohit/Kohli (openers. Both destructive and they are our best batsmen. They should look to play the most overs)
MSD (Can steady the ship and keep the score card ticking if Openers fall cheaply and unleash his big shots later)
Raina (5th bowler and finisher)
Big Hitter
Big Hitter
Big Hitter
Ashwin
Mishra
Shami
Yadav/Aaron/Nehra

This team will be hard to beat in Indian conditions.

Totally agree with this (especially the bolded parts).

We need to blood in some fresh faces into our Limited overs side (both at 50 overs and t20s) sooner rather than later (without worrying about the results). Seeing too many dead weights in the playing line up, game after game is so demoralizing as a fan.

This series would have been a perfect platform to test out some of our youngsters like Kuldeep Yadav, M Ranagrajan, Manan Vohra, Gurkeerat etc instead we still see Darty (without accomplishing anything noteworthy in domestic/international scene for the last year or so) being an automatic choice (add to this, some bizarre batting order choices from MSD that is messing both Rahane as well as Kohli's game + team selection).

Excellent innings and more importantly - a great match!

"When the going gets tough, tough gets going" - This line sums up MS Dhoni. Greatest leader ever from Subcontinent.

These kind of innings were a routine for him once upon a time. Good to see him shut his critics (including me) with his performance and tactics today. However, his team selection is still very very bad and bizarre! How can you field such a team?

If they can back Imran with stats that he was more successful than MSD, let them come. I know they cant, so chill.

Dhoni is most successful ODI captain in games played in SC. No doubt about that.

Actually his team selection saved India today. Patel and Bhajji contributed some crucial runs with the bat. With Mishra in at 7, India would not have posted even 200. The only bowler that needs to be thrown out is Umesh Yadav. Then again he is Indian fans darling because he is Phaaast.

This is a batting track. You can see he is struggling with his reflexes. Its time for him to retire gracefully. I don't want to see him pushed outta the team by the selectors...

what's wrong with the team? 5 bowlers is the way to go..

People would be naive if they still think that Dhoni has a lot of say in team selections. He was never a supporter of Bajji in the team and with Shastri as the team director, I don't think Dhoni has too much say in either the picking of the squad and nor the team selection.

If he goes now it is for sure due to the outside pressure, not because he wants to retire. Except for Rohit and Kohli, there is no one who can match his run scoring over the last 5 years. So no idea why we want him to retire.

He needs to bat at 4 in ODI's really. I don't think he has the ability to hit out initially anymore.

What's wrong with giving your 2 cents on something interesting to us. Stop derailing threads please. Very interesting discussion going on and the last thing we need is someone like you to turn it into a rant thread [emoji16] [emoji91]

:))

India currently has my favorite player (Kohli) playing for them, hence the interest. But tbf, I want them to actually become a force again and this series will go a long way in doing just that. Frankly, these days they lose so much, it's not even fun to bask in the glory of their defeat anymore.

Great players tends to extract something from the deepest reserves to put up a special performance when the time is up. But these performances are usually their swan song farewell performances. Happens with many greats. This might be something like that here.

I think going by history this points to Dhoni's time being up. He should see how rest of series goes but should be looking to quit by WT20 2016.

Dhoni has played close to 1000 days of cricket in the last 7 years.

This does not include practise matches and travelling etc which prolly takes as much time

Any human would just burn out

Whattay knock by MSD. Nerves of steel. Great to see him shut the haters up. I reckon he might hang the boots up after the T20 WC.

What is really strange here that, why a Captain performs only when the press is critical of him ???? So now he can sluff off for a few games ??? I don't think so.

Nope, the amount of milk he drinks warrants him to continue till 2019. He would be targetting at least 2019, or WT20 2018 if he gets his WT20 next year smooth

Not sure about the milk but I don't think MSD is someone who'll just hang around for the sake of it :)) By the time 2019 WC comes around he'll be what 38. I think he'll call it a day after the upcoming T20 WC giving India a good 3-3.5 years to prepare for the next WC.

You could see Dhoni of 2004-2005 in that innings of 92. Pure power and placement, his trademark qualities. Always gets a lot of hate thrown his way from the media, doesn't say a word himself and lets his bat do the talking instead.

I remember when Pakistan was butchering India in the 2012-13 ODI series, he made an incredibly valiant effort to dig India out of 30-5 or something like that to a decent 221 singlehandedly. While we still cruised to yet another easy win, the effort he put in that day (even to the point of getting dehydrated and vomiting) with his century was commendable.

A legend fights back.

Heroic come back to form from MS Dhoni.

Lol chasing 234 he took it to 50th over.. there would be one match in WC where we have to chase 300 and dhobi will make sure we lose that match and get knocked out..

Another armchair Einstein ... did you even see the match? Bouncy pitch, slow wicket, large outfield, overall a tricky and difficult chase. We would have lost it without Dhoni

People are not happy because India won. They are sad because Dhoni scored.
And they call themselves Indian Cricket Fans.

Why bring in kohli? Indian politicians/news channels have corrupted the mind of the entire country that it has become a norm that if we are discussing about something or someone we have to bring someone else to prove the first person is not as bad as the second.

Yes I watched the entire series and Dhoni played well but he doesn't have the power game to win us 300+ chases which will cost us the world cup.. The difference between Dhoni and Rohit is that Rohit still has it in him to make up the balls wasted later on in his innings but Dhoni lacks that which will cost us big matches..

Remember WC will be played in summer in England and pitches and conditions in England have been flattish where 280+ scores will become common. Dhoni will cost us those matches unless the top 3 fires and doesn't let it come to Dhoni or others.

I think you must be young, if you feel this way.. Everyone would be happy India won but for most of us the priority is to win world cup.. No one will remember this series few years from now bur WC will be remembered for eternity..

If Dhoni proves me wrong in WC I would be firSt to post here that I was wrong however IMO he will cost us the world cup and we would have had a better chance of winning if we had groomed others after 2017 CT atleast if not 2015 WC.

All these Indian experts on this forum want Dhoni to fail, want Bhuvi to fail and they troll these players, despite all these trolls they want India to win! And they go into hiding when Thala and Bhuvi shut their mouths with match winning performances! Well deserved MOS Thala! Whistle Podu!!!! :14:

Don't give lectures to others, when you yourself refer to a legend like Dhoni by calling him Dhobi.
Secondly, not everyone in the team can be like Rohit or Kohli. They play at a different position and have different roles in the team, they are best in the world at what they do. (and most importantly they are at the prime of their careers)
Dhoni is not the same Dhoni he used to be, but he still has great confidence in himself and at the end of the day he won you two back to back matches. So, appreciate him for what he did. Criticise when its needed.

Hope he has a good WC and finishes his career on a good note.

People here forget that this WC is going to be a different format from the recent ones where the matches are going to be played in a round robin format. MSD at #4 while chasing seems to be a good strategy though while batting first #4 might not be a good fit for him and a floater could be used depending on match situation. Though if he finds his hitting form after this confidence boosting series then nothing like it.

The reason I point out about the round robin format is that, each team is going to play 8 or 9 matches in the group stages and not just talent, but your temperament and fitness is going to be challenged unlike other formats where even the WC winner would play only about 8 matches or so.

This is where an inform MSD is going to be an asset for India and with this going to be his last WC, he would be eager to bow out in style as well. Let us see how things pan out..

But he should not bat lower than No.4. That at least should go into management's head! Which means Rayudu should be nowhere near the team and we need a proper No.5 (who is also capable of scoring big runs, 100s when needed - Not Karthik who has only 1 century in almost 150 international games!) And that No.5 should also not be a rookie (Gill, Iyer or someone. Even Rahul has failed) because the world cup is way too near! So you need a tested person, and that person is Rishab Pant, who at least got opportunity in Tests at top level (thank God for that!) and he has shown he can do that (play long innings at good pace). So please give all the LOI games in NZ (plus any other games before WC including practice matches), so that he owns that No.5 spot himself! Only this can bring some kind of solidity to Indian middle order (with Jadhav, Pandya to follow after that). This way we can hope to compete well in World Cup!

What I don't understand is why he's not given the #4 spot, he's perfect for it.

He can rebuild if the top order is knocked over and it gives him time to get in, he can't really afford that at 5 or 6.

Very good performance by dhoni, best player of the series.
But i still have some doubt about his chasing ability when it comes to chasing 300+ score, if he gets back in 2014 mode then it will be good.

But:
CSK has got nothing to do with this performance.
Csk hasn't produced a single player for india.
Csk is the most corrupt ipl team.
Ipl is nothing compared to international cricket.
Lastly dhoni is not from chennai.
Thank u.

Pyjama league fans are dancing, as if csk won the match.

There are 10 odis before world cup, gill can be tested.
But i don't think he has the power game to play at 5.Kl has gotten himself into trouble.
Rishabh is the best choice. But karthik is going nowhere.
I think krunal can also be tried

That is auto correct I use phone and it auto converts to that.. I don't proof read all posts so it spelling mistakes are posted.. Why would I call Dhobi anything? He is a legend and everyone in India respects him for what he has done..

Also please change your mindset, being a dhobi is an honest profession and nothing to feel bad about.. So if anyone is called a dhobi its not anything bad. This is exact mindset which plagues our entire nation where people consider honest professions as an insult. Hope you understand and change that mindset of yours.

Dhoni js being criticised because he is taking up a spot for someone who could have been groomed till the world cup which would have increased our chances of winning the WC.. It doesn't matter if he made us win this series if he costs us the world cup all this wont be remembered.. He took retirement from teSts at right time.and everyone respects him for it.

Problem.with fans is they are just blind supporters and start worshipping players, cricket is a sport and one should build a professional set up where the best available players should be played at best time.. In ODI tha targets are ICC events and we need bilateral to build tram for biggest event which is WC.

I have a feeling that we are not going to see any more changes in the squad (barring the inclusion of Pandya) and even Rayudu would make the trip though as a back up middle order batsman. There is just no time to try out some more personnel and the focus would be to see what would be the first choice eleven.

The only person whose place is a question mark is the back up opener, but Rahul in all likelihood would be back. Gill might get a chance in the NZ series or the next series against AUS at home, but I doubt he would make the trip to the WC barring some dramatic development which happens in the interim.

What I don't understand is why he's not given the #4 spot, he's perfect for it.

He can rebuild if the top order is knocked over and it gives him time to get in, he can't really afford that at 5 or 6.

He can't rotate strike. Hoggs the strike, his dot ball percentage is very high and affects other end batsman's rhythm.

Since the Champions Trophy in 2017, 18 batsmen have faced 1,000+ deliveries whilst batting in the top six. None have scored more slowly than the 4.37rpo managed by Dhoni.

He is best suitable at no. 6 or 7 imo where he has to play according to situation.
