"We're playing some good cricket so we're not too worried about where we stand" : Virat Kohli

India captain Virat Kohli's focus turned to Pakistan immediately after his side's match against New Zealand was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Thursday.

India face Pakistan at Old Trafford on Sunday in a match which is likely to draw a global television audience of one billion.

"It's an opportunity to create excitement," said Kohli, 30.

"It's a marquee event all over the world."

The two countries rarely play outside of major tournaments, with India winning their last two meetings in the Asia Cup in 2018, while Pakistan beat their arch-rivals in the final of the Champions Trophy in England in 2017.

India have started well in the World Cup, winning their opening two matches against South Africa and Australia, before their match against New Zealand at Trent Bridge was abandoned.

Pakistan, in contrast, have struggled - beating hosts England but losing to Australia and West Indies.

"We're playing some good cricket so we're not too worried about where we stand," said Kohli. "Having two wins gives you that extra confidence.

"We will have a couple of practice sessions so we know where we are in terms of mindset and skill.

"It's also about going out and having game time. We are quite ready to take that game on."

On coping with the pressure of such a big game, he added: "As soon you as enter the field it's calm and relaxed.

"The frenzy around it is a bit intimidating for the guys doing it for the first time but for us it's about being professional as always, do the basics right and look to get a result your way."

Thursday's abandonment was the fourth in the 2019 World Cup, with the previous highest number of washed out matches in a World Cup being two, in 1992 and 2003.

"Obviously you turn up hoping to compete for two points but we've been here for four days and not seen any sun so it's no surprise," reflected New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

"We have a break now, which is interesting at this point in the tournament but it's a good chance for guys to freshen up and look forward to our next challenge.

"This is a good opportunity for us to get away, refresh and have a couple of training sessions before that challenge against South Africa [19 June]."

Very confident India captain! Good to see him building up the event.

#AaneyDo I think it will be a great game. A loss for Pakistan would mean they are all but out of this tournament so they will give everything they have for a win.

11 points will be enough inshaAllah, so 4 out of 5 needed.
We can still do this inshaAllah

4 days no sun? Damp squib. You want all teams at their best in the best possible conditions. Let us get this crappy world cup out of the way and we shall focus on international Tests

Think it's a tooth and nails competition between Eng and India in terms of being the best in ODI's, but the tournament nature can very well change that due to sudden death matches. All it takes is one bad day :P
Think it would create more excitement for neutral fans if any other team apart from these two favorites get to win, and yeah no one wants Aus to win another WC as well :P
For example, for me, I would support WI to win it after my home team. Although England has been my second favorite team for the majority of my life, I would still want an underdog to win it for a change.

Kohli speaks so professionally when doing press conferences.
Safi needs to learn from him.
I know kohli speaks fluent english and safi does not have that much command of english, but it is also the mentality.
Kohli gives an air of confidence and safi gives you the impression of someone from a fan forum, not the captain of Pakistan.

Watch any of the tons of videos from ex Pakistani players on the various social media and they keep harping on about how it’s a big pressure game blah blah. A young player is probably wondering to himself maybe there’s something wrong with me that I don’t feel such intense pressure

If you don't feel the pressure you probably don't understand the consequences of the failed outcome. Pressure in itself is not debilitating if you keep it in check and understand where it's coming from.

Yep.

You're not out there in the middle and can't feel or see it.

Air-conditioned room, a computer - where's the pressure?

English isn't the problem, it's lack of education, personality and communication skills. I am sure Kohli would give a much better interview than him in Hindi/Urdu as well.

Dunno about the english part ...but frankly we desis (especially in my country india) are strung up on english levels....i mean i understand you saying the bit about lack of confidence for sarfie...but as kapil D once said 'if you wanted an english speaking kaptaan-better get someone from oxford, i'm here to play and my skills define the game'....as far as sarfie goes, he has captained the team to an ICC championship win...VK has'nt....lets see what happens on sun...:)

I remember an interview by Imran and he mentioned that pressure will be felt by everyone. It is how you channel that nervous energy to get a positive result which defines your success in big games.

True. Why focus on english. Just proves that we are just ex-colonies playing cricket.

I will be happy to get a mainstream bowler from Haryana or wherever who can’t speak a single world of English but makes ‘involuntary love’ to all Batsmen worldwide.

Kohli captained India to their 2008 U19 WC win.

Kohli is being prepped , dont think he is educated like Kumble/Srinath either, but has understanding of game..plus to be a sellable athlete other than performance you need an image.

Kapil made everyone speak English coz Srikanth IIRC..

I didn't mean degrees, I mean that grace and humility that comes with education and reflects in your appearance and body language.

This is India's golden generation, next WC they will have a young team so might have a tough chance of winning even though it'll be at home. So if India don't win it this year they might have to wait till 2027.

Their domestic cricket is so good, they may even produce better players than the current set.

They are not doing black magic in domestic cricket that new players will emerge out of the blue. They have already identified next generation in Pant, Shaw and Gill who IMO are inferior to current generation.

Kohli, rohit, rahul, bhuvi, bumrah, shami, kuldeep, Chahal, pant, hardhik all will be around so next world cup also india will be competitive if not one of the favourites in 2023.

what are you saying. just about every one in the team will be around for next world cup with exception of Dhoni, Jadhav and Dhawan. All three have ready made replacements in Shaw, Pant and Gill. Gill and Shaw skillwise are equal or better than Dhawan and Jadhav and Pant has already made his mark in tests. I expect him to settle nicely in Dhoni's role skill wise. India might miss Dhoni's calming effect and superior keeping skills but Pant will at least be very close to other keepers like De-Kock, Barristow in keeping.

There are also bunch of young leggies and fast bowlers who are waiting for opportunities. So overall they will be a better and stronger team not inferior. Also the golden generation was the one which won 2011 world cup. That had multiple Indian legends

Shaw and Gill are 19 and scoring runs by the ton in first class and 'A' cricket. In 4 years time, they could very well be in the conversation for the best young batsmen in international cricket.

India will be stronger next time around. They will be more like what England is now with lot more aggressive players. Besides England is the one team that must win this time or else they will have to wait for a long time. Not India.

We will have to wait and see. Kohli and Sharma will be in the twilight of their careers and cannot rule out prolonged absences due to injury. Actually Sharma is already officially 32, in 4 year's time he will be 36. He already isn't the fittest bloke around and has a belly. Do not see him surviving till next WC. Then Kohli is 30 right now, will be 34. Already his output his declining (for his standards). The jury is out on the new kids, KL Rahul was made to be superstar even before he debuted and we all have seen his output. So unless the new kids to live up to their hype you cannot say 2023 team will be better than 2019 team.
