"We're very hopeful that Shoaib Malik will do a fine job in Hafeez's absence" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed on Tuesday backed veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik to contribute more with the ball during the upcoming New Zealand tour and cover for Mohammad Hafeez, who is serving a one-year ban due to a flaw in his bowling action.

While admitting that Hafeez's loss before such a tricky series is a major setback for the team, the skipper expressed full faith in Malik's abilities, saying: "This was a setback for the team but I am confident that the plan PCB has devised for rectification of Hafeez's action will help him clear (the next test). In the meantime, Shoaib Malik will pitch in with the ball during the middle orders. We're very hopeful that he'll do a fine job in Hafeez's absence."

When asked which one of Harris Sohail and Mohammad Nawaz is ahead in the pecking order, Sarfraz revealed both have different roles in the side and hinted that he could even pick both.

"We mainly consider Harris a batsman-bowler, whereas Nawaz is in the side as a bowling all-rounder," he said during a media briefing. "Now it depends on how we play over there and whether we use four bowlers or five. Team selection will depend on the pitches there."

Sarfraz also threw his weight behind the batting unit, and reminded the critics that the batsmen also fared admirably in 2017.

"Pakistan's bowling has always been strong but our batsmen have also been doing well since the West Indies tour," he said. "Yes, we couldn't score that big against India — but against South Africa and Sri Lanka, our batsmen did contribute. Mind you, we now also have depth in our batting: Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim and Fahim Ashraf are all batting very well."

And if runs keep on flowing down under, Sarfraz says he will have "no reason to change the batting order and that the same line-up will continue".

Regarding the team's strategy for New Zealand, Sarfraz said: "We want to play positive cricket. In places such as New Zealand, if you don't play attacking cricket, bowlers usually get the upper hand."

The Champions Trophy-winning captain was also asked what he thinks of the recent T10 phenomenon, to which he replied: "If you see it from the perspective of enjoyment, there is nothing better than T10. It's a 10-a-side match, which ends in an hour-and-a-half. But I also think that if T10 comes to the forefront, then more kids will play that brand of cricket and no one will be interested in Test cricket."

Haris could have been a direct replacement for Hafeez.Haris is a better batsman and
Hafeez the better bowler while Haris is quite handy with the ball too.

The loss of key players Imad Wasim, Junaid Khan and Usman Shinwari came as a major blow to Pakistan, said Pakistan cricket skipper Sarfraz Ahmed on Tuesday, ahead of the New Zealand series.

“Our three main bowlers Imad, Junaid and Shinwari got unfit, which has come as a major setback,” Sarfraz said, while addressing media at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

The skipper was, however, optimistic that the upcoming replacements, particularly Aamir Yamin, will perform well against the Kiwis. “Yamin was consistently performing at the domestic level and has been bowling well lately,” Sarfraz said.

He was of the view that the conditions at New Zealand are particularly not in favor of spinners, however, we would to assess the situation and came up with the needed bowling selection.

“We will try to select the best all-rounder as per the conditions,” said Sarfraz. The seniors, including fast bowler Muhammad Amir, would need to take additional burden, the skipper added.

“There is an additional responsibility on Amir and Hasan, alongside Rumman Raees, but I am hopeful that the two will carry the bowling line well in the coming tour,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pakistan is scheduled to play five ODIs and three T20Is between January 6 and January 28.

You will never see this team in a million years. 20 overs of spin? Really?

Malik is an unreliable bowler. Boom or bust and more bust

Dont understand what stopping Harris to replace Hackfeez, who's much batter batsman and can bowl easily 5/6 overs along with Malik. Because I don't feel comfortable Malik bowling quote of 10 overs all by himself.

First off the match is in new Zealand, nawaz' bowling is already average and it'll be even worse in NZ. Secondly Nawaz' batting is downright terrible, Hasan Ali bats better than him. Thirdly, Fahim would mainly be in the team for batting.

Very disappointed to hear these comments from Sarfraz. I thought he was an honest person and wanted to give equal opportunities based upon players' abilities, but seems like he too has fallen into the "favoritism" trap and pick his buddy Nawaz. MS Dhoni would never make such a mistake. So stupid of whoever decides the playing 11. How do you rely on a primarily batsman Shoaib Malik for your spin overs? Haris would be a good assist to our main spinner Shadab. Seriously, it seems like they'll find a million reasons to not play Haris, just pathetic excuses, even though Hafeez is out. Should've picked Umar Akmal instead if they were gonna play these petty politics. Of course, I might be wrong, but these choices are seriously no-brainers. How do they keep getting it wrong?

Sarfraz can never be a victim of favoritism. I know him personally and I live in Karachi just very very to his home in Bufferzone. See if he could have been the victim of favoritism, he could have selected Asad Shafiq, Fawad Alam, Tabish Khan and most importantly Imad Wasim & Anwar Ali who are actually his closest fellows through-out his career. Sarfraz, Nasir Jamshed, Anwar Ali, Imad Wasim all were the part of that winning Under-19 team who won the World Cup in 2006.

Sarfraz is actually new in captaincy and he is not yet a strong captain like Imran Khan or Wasim Akram, who can have some say in the selection process. Let him become more stronger, so he can have more powerful say, than (as per my knowledge) he will kick-out both Malik & Hafeez, as he wants only those players who performs well. Seniors were against him including the former Coach Waqar Younis, thats why he slapped them by scoring century in his first match in the World Cup, while other batsmen failed in pathetic style including the "burdened" seniors like Misbah Younis Hafeez & Afridi. These so-called seniors were a serious burden on ODI team. Team wins through performance, not through experience, not through big names, not through past performances.

If Malik & Hafeez wants to be part of playing 11, they have to perform. Exactly same formula should be applied on youngsters too.. Who ever fails to perform, should be replaced. See what India did with Sehwag, Gambhir, Dravid, Raina and now even India is debating whether Yuvraj & Dhoni are burden on the team. South Africa will be the decider for Dhoni's future in playing 11.

Our nation has habbit to worship names.

It's not even about that. Perhaps Sarfraz doesn't have complete say in who gets a chance. Okay, it's understandable. But if it weren't for World Cup 2015, he wouldn't even be our captain, let alone be in the team. He got that "opportunity" and seized it. But the problem is that Haris Sohail is not being given that "opportunity" to prove himself. Perhaps injuries in the past held him back, which isn't anyone else's fault. But now he's fit and in good shape and deserves a chance. Literally whoever decides the playing 11 has made it their agenda that they would rather pick a rock than Haris Sohail. I'm telling you, even if Hafeez was dropped, they would've went with Imad Wasim and Shadab for the spin attack. It's only because of Imad Wasim's injury that Sohail is even being "Considered" for play. And even then, they're gonna go for Shoaib Malik and possibly even Mohammad Nawaz instead. It's like Haris Sohail is a "back up for a back up for a back up." Literally. So many players had to get injured or be dropped/banned for him to even get considered. Give the kid a chance. If Sohail doesn't "perform" as you say, I will be the first person calling for him to be dropped. I'm serious. We have nothing to lose, except maybe some series in a worst case scenario. Next ICC event isn't until 2019.

Also, what if Malik bowls and get phainta of 70/80/90 runs in his 10. Wouldn't it mess up his batting form? Don't think its a wise idea to have him bowl 10 overs.

But this is not something new, we've this issue of not analyzing player's potential and give him role, which he's not capable to perform. Hafeez, Ahmed, Umar, Anwar and the list goes on.
