West Indies (142/7) defeat Bangladesh (139/5) by 3 runs to stay alive in the ICC T20 World Cup

WI 142/7 (20)
BAN 139/5 (20) CRR: 6.95
West Indies won by 3 runs

Lol, what a poor quality cricket.

Russell gets smacked every game in IPL in death overs.

That has to be one of the lowest quality games I've seen in a while...

I know who you are talking about and his actions have been very suspicious to say the least but even apart from him, this team is pretty terrible and their fortunes wouldn't have changed one bit. If it weren't for BD's absolutely pathetic effort in the field, they would have struggled to make 120 here.

The one I am talking about played today and I have had my suspicions about for a long time, just like I did with Samuels

Windies body language is so poor, Dada gayle playing footy instead of cricket. Windies were poor imagine how bad Bangladesh were today couldn't chase even with wickets on hand.

There's a solid case of getting Bdesh players undergo mental health assessment and figure out if they are fit and proper to be out there in the world

Bangladesh are unlikely to win other games. South Africa and Australia should be much tougher.

West Indies also are unlikely to win other games. They are scheduled to face England and Australia.

West Indies are carrying over the hill senior players like Gayle and Bravo. These guys are playing on their reputation only.

I watched only final over of the match as I got free at that time only and Bangladesh were struggling to get any big hit but worse than that, Windies were mis-fielding and creating chances for BD. Neither of two teams deserve to qualify to semis.

Definitely.

Oman should've knocked Bangladesh out but Oman screwed up.

West Indies have been terrible. I have never seen them this terrible in a World T20.

Hi first post on this forum. British Bangladeshi. BD fan. Absolutely fuming! This was such a mess up in the end. They left it too late. Never leave it for the last over. 17th over was key for me, and it was so poor, they tried to force it too much and were all over the place in that over should have left couple of balls of Bravo was so wide but the kept moving offside. Good innings by Liton Das. But when you've face 40 plus balls and you couldn't connect on out of the park. That shot was a nervy half hit to me. It was there to smoke it out of the park.

6wickets in hand going into the 17th. Should have chased it easily. But Bangladesh have their ways of choking and bottling things up.

Welcome to the forum.

Yeah. They definitely bottled it up badly. They had wickets in hand.

As I have said the Mustafiz 20th over was the decider of the match. 20 runs he gave

Absolutely. They need a good Bengali speaking psychologist. If they don't have one already. Temperament issues and issue mentally in cricket has always been there sincr day 1. So many examples I can remember BD messing up easily chase and wins. What annoys me the most, some of the most seniors are big part of the blame. Yes, seniors those who have been playing since 2005.

Watching BD I brain cells most times. Thank God I have England to support too.

Watching BD in T20s I lose braincells most times. Luckily I have England to support too and can enjoy stress free games.

West Indies (142/7) defeat Bangladesh (139/5) by 3 runs to

There, right there, have Bangladesh goofed up their chance of going home with that one upset from this tournament. They looked well on course, but they lost their way in the last few overs. Poor, a very poor attempt at chasing the score. Literally gifted the match to the West Indies.

Well done, Pooran. A seriously good innings on what was perhaps not the most ideal wicket to bat on.

As I have said the Mustafiz 20th over was the decider of the match. 20 runs he gave

Mustafiz has something very KHET about him. No offence. Yes he is from a humble background now a millionaire MashAllah. Plays around the world in T20 franchise leagues and earns well good on him. But his bowling this tournament has been so wayward the other day he bowled 5wides? I've been watching cricket since 98, I honestly never seen anything like that. He should be experienced bowler now because he has had many years under his belt. When he first started off he was unplayable because his line were right and his cutters did the trick These days even associate teams batsmen smoke him.

Thanks dude.

I've been seeing this forum a while now. Thought I'd sign up. Seems interesting lots of posters and fans from different teams.

West Indies have been terrible. I have never seen them this terrible in a World T20.

I think BD are also at their worst in this format only so that makes it even worse.

Mushfiq needs to retire from T20I. He has been a good servant even in T20I for BD. He is a key member in ODI and Test. Please step aside from this format. Thanks

West Indies picked up their first win while Bangladesh slipped to their third straight loss of the Super 12 stage at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021.

Liton Das and Mahmud Ullah led a spirited Bangladesh chase of 143, which left them needing 13 off the final over and four off the final ball. But Andre Russell drew on his experience to deny them as West Indies picked up a vital three-run win.

With this loss at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh's hopes of progressing in the tournament look bleak.

West Indies had the power-hitting of Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder to thank for giving them those crucial runs on the board to defend. Their 142/7 had been an innings of two halves. While their first 10 overs featured just two boundaries, both fours, their last 10 got them 94 runs, with seven sixes lighting up the final five.

Openers fall early

In a tournament where teams chasing have been most successful so far, Bangladesh were quick to put the defending champions in to bat after winning the toss.

West Indies made changes to their stuttering batting line-up, dropping opener Lendl Simmons, pushing Chris Gayle back up to open and bringing in Roston Chase at No.3 for his T20I debut. However, it didn't change their Powerplay fortunes.

Both openers fell early, as West Indies found themselves 18/2 in 4.2 overs, and could only get to 29/2 when the fielding restrictions were in place.

Evin Lewis tried to go leg side to Mustafizur Rahman, only to sky on and hand square leg a simple catch. The left-hander Gayle, who had survived a run-out chance, was then undone by the off-spin of Mahedi Hasan, edging onto his stumps.

Mahedi, who dropped a straightforward catch of Chase off his own bowling, had Shimron Hetmyer out the very next ball, caught a few metres from the straight boundary.

West Indies could only limp to 48/3 at the halfway stage.

Pooran and Holder accelerate

Chase continued to anchor, but captain Kieron Pollard struggled to get going and retired hurt in the 13th over.

The West Indies' day went from bad to worse when Russell was run out in freakish fashion the very next ball, with Taskin Ahmed getting a toe to a Chase drive to deflect the ball onto the stumps and run Russell out at the non-striker's end without facing a single delivery.

But the deep batting line-up meant there was still hope for the West Indies, and it was Pooran who delivered the innings that his side desperately needed.

Coming in at No.7, he smashed four sixes in his 40 off just 22 deliveries, before falling to Shoriful Islam.

Holder, making his first appearance of the tournament after being drafted in as an injury replacement, kept the momentum up with a quickfire 15 off 5 at the end of the innings to keep the match competitive.

Shakib's struggles

Shakib Al Hasan, who appeared to have injured his leg in the first innings, joined Mohammad Naim to open Bangladesh's chase. The move was so that the all-rounder, who was struggling to run, could capitalise on the fielding restrictions and attack the boundaries.

However, he did not last long in the middle. Russell, brought in as the first change bowler, struck in the fifth over to have him caught by Holder inside the circle.

Holder had a more direct role to play in the next wicket, as Mohammad Naim chopped on.

Das takes the game deep

At the halfway mark, Bangladesh were ahead of where the West Indies were, but still had a hill to climb.

Soumya Sarkar, back in the XI for this match, looked in decent touch in trying to rebuild the innings, but gave Akeal Hosein a well-earned wicket, while Mushfiqur too was bowled after playing a few good-looking cut shots.

Das, though, kept the runs coming, even as wickets fell around him. The 12th over, bowled by Dwayne Bravo, went for 15 runs to release some pressure. Mahmud Ullah too, meanwhile, found the gaps.

A six down the ground from the skipper to start the 19th over from Bravo kept them in the chase. But the experienced West Indian fought back to have Das caught in the final ball of the over by the tall Holder at the boundary.

Russell holds his nerve

Without the injured Pollard on the field, it was up to Pooran to marshal the bowlers.

With 13 needed off the last six balls, Russell did not give away any boundaries. However, as the pressure told on the fielders, the batters managed seven from the first four balls, also capitalising on a dropped catch in the deep.

With four needed off the final ball, and Mahmud Ullah on strike, Russell sent down a full ball. The batter, looking for a boundary, could not make contact, and the West Indies celebrations began.

The West Indies sealed a tight encounter against Bangladesh, winning by just three runs off the final ball of the game to knock Bangladesh out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021.

Nicholas Pooran crashed 40 of 22 to rescue West Indies innings having lost the toss and been put into bat, as they posted 142 for seven.

Bangladesh were steady in their reply but needing 13 off the final over, they could only manage 10 as the Windies kept their own qualification hopes alive.

Debutant Roston Chase was into the action early on as opener Evin Lewis was caught easily by Mushfiqur Rahim at square leg.

After being promoted to open, ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle was not all-conquering, instead being clean bowled by Mahedi Hassan having made four off ten.

Shimron Hetmyer then fell in the seventh over and it would be four overs before the West Indies got a boundary, Chase combining with Kieron Pollard to steady the ship.

Pollard then faced choppy waters as Bangladesh went up for a review for LBW but the DRS showed the impact was outside off stump and Pollard was safe, for now.

Two balls later, Pollard was walking off retired hurt, a ball later new batter Andre Russell was back in the dugout, run out without facing as Taskin Ahmed got a toe to Chase’s drive back down the ground.

Russell’s dismissal brought out Pooran who made 40 off 22 to rescue the West Indies to 119-5 and Chase was then undone by Shoriful Islam, who knocked over his leg stump.

Jason Holder survived the hat-trick ball but his partner Dwayne Bravo fell three balls later as Pollard returned to the crease with five balls to go. He and Holder crashed what turned out to be three crucial sixes to push the West Indies to a respectable score.

Captain Pollard was not the only one hurt, with Shakib Al Hasan noticeably hobbling between the wickets as he opened Bangladesh’s chase.

And it was Shakib who was the first batter to go, sending an easy catch to Holder to leave Bangladesh on 21 for one.

Mohammad Naim dragged the ball back onto his stumps off the bowling of Holder as the Tigers ended the powerplay on 29-2, the same as the Windies.

From there, Bangladesh kicked on reaching 60 before the loss of their third wicket, Soumya Sarkar sending the ball into the diving hands of Gayle.

The next wicket followed a similar pattern, Bangladesh adding 30 runs before losing a wicket, this time Rampaul bowling Mushfiqur for eight.

With three overs remaining the Tigers needed 30 from 18 balls with Liton Das crashing a four to swing the game towards Bangladesh as he and Mahmudullah looked to be controlling the chase.

Liton could not stay until the end though, as the long limbs of Holder caught him on the boundary, with six balls to go Bangladesh needed 13 runs.

The West Indies were plagued by fielding errors missing run-out chances, dropping catches and missing balls, but with Bangladesh needing a boundary off the final ball, Russell held his nerve to bowl West Indies to a narrow victory.

Scores in brief

Battle of the brainless idiots!
Both sides have at least half a dozen players whose expiry date have long been gone, playing simply on past reputation. It's quite pathetic & alarming to see at 2021,WI pining their hopes on a bunch of has-beens like Gayle,Bravo,Pollard,Rampaul!!(Where the hell did he come from after ages). These guys were legendary for 2000/10's but not in the 2020's. Bangladesh doesn't have a single proper gun batsman that is suited for modern day LOI. Liton/ Soumya didn't develop from their initial years, Naim belongs to the 90's. So-called "big 3/4" were never good enough even at their peak. All those investments, heavy media scrutiny have gone to waste. I feel BD cricket is going to the similar route of Zim,Kenya (Extinction) unfortunately.

BD cricket will never go the route of zim and kenya simpy because their economy is growing fast, and a burgeoning middle class fans will continue to fund their cricket. And cricket being played by only a handful of countries means BD will always be in the mix of the action, sometimes doing well and sometimes doing poorly.

I seriously think that a couple of these Bdesh cricketers esp. Mushfiq are mentally underdeveloped..

Ravi Rampaul played in the 2007 World T20. Here he is playing again.

I thought he retired. West Indies went back to oldies in this tournament.

Mustafiz has something very KHET about him. No offence. Yes he is from a humble background now a millionaire MashAllah. Plays around the world in T20 franchise leagues and earns well good on him. If you have any idea regarding BD football of 80/90's you wouldn't be as optimistic as you are. At that time football was the biggest craze of the nation & they were the highest paid sportsmen, biggest celebrities. They were roughly the 2nd/3rd best team of South Asia/SAAF(which itself had only 7 countries till 2003). Then they began to play pathetically & by late 2000's they were getting beaten by Bhutan! Now nobody cares about them. They aren't even considered top 5 amongst 7 teams!!!! The fans will pay as long as they witness decent performance. If the current form the cricket side continues to be this horrible, fans will stop paying money & attention. It's as simple as that. Just like amongst handful of teams BD football struggles to compete & stay relevant, their cricket counterparts will also fall to same fate if they don't wake up soon. Comparison to Zim/Kenya might sound hyperbole, but the reality is they will soon be stepped over by Afghanistan, Ireland etc.

Despite all the failures in T20I especially in ICC events. I wouldn't generalise BD cricket. I wouldn't go that far to say they'll go below Afg and Ire in future. With a 180million there, cricket has come a long long way in BD. Future talents will come about.

BD is fine in ODI, and they understand the ODI format best. It's T20 BD suffer and seems like might continue to suffer because of them using ODI methods philosophy into their t20i game when they should be proper planning a proper line up for T20 with right people right position and kicking out 90s and 00s style batsmen.
In Test they've improved can take it to 5th day, quite more understanding of the format better now than 00s. But T20 format I think they'll need big massive changes!
