Scotland open their T20 World Cup campaign against West Indies in Kolkata after a whirlwind late entry into the tournament, replacing Bangladesh just two weeks before the opener. Ranked 14th, Scotland arrive with limited preparation and losses in both warm-up games, but their recent World Cup record is strong, including qualification for the Super 12s in 2021 and a narrow loss to Australia in the final over in 2024. They also beat West Indies by 42 runs at the 2022 World Cup, with nine players from that XI potentially featuring again.

West Indies, meanwhile, return to Eden Gardens with memories of their 2016 title win and enter the match with a powerful batting core despite the absence of Nicholas Pooran. Jason Holder leads the bowling attack and needs two wickets to become the first West Indies player to reach 100 T20I wickets, while captain Shai Hope comes off a prolific year in T20 cricket with 1,733 runs in 2025. Form-wise, both teams have been inconsistent, with Scotland at LLWWL and West Indies at WLLWL.

Conditions are expected to favour batters, with Eden Gardens producing an average first-innings score of 199 in IPL 2025 and multiple 200-plus totals in recent afternoon games. Scotland will rely heavily on allrounder Brandon McMullen, who smashed 95 off 39 in a warm-up and 60 off 34 against Australia last year, while West Indies look to Holder and Akeal Hosein to control key phases. With no rain forecast and high-scoring trends, the Group B clash promises an intense and potentially explosive start for both sides.

Squads:

Scotland:
Richie Berrington, Tom Bruce, Matthew Cross, Brad Currie, Oliver Davidson, Chris Greaves, Michael Jones, Michael Leask, Finlay McCreath, Brandon McMullen, George Munsey, Safyaan Sharif, Mark Watt, Brad Wheal, Zainullah Ihsan

West Indies: Shai Hope, Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Quentin Sampson, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd

Windies should win this game but it will be a close game, I think... Scotland is no nonsense team as well.

In t20s times changed, some associate teams look decent and can pull a surprise. Scotland have some hitters. Windies bowling isnt that great. So dont be surprised. But I do feel 180 odd is bit too much for Scotland.

Scotland did well and the Windies powerhouse in the end. For a team that thought they would be relaxing on a beach but were brought in to spare Indian blushes they can be happy with their performance.

Gotta support the home nations, come on Scotland. If Wales had their own team they’d probably be one of the best associate nation there!

Scottish score at 78/3 after 10 overs is exactly expected of bng too against chasing 182.There is a reason no one apart from bng fans miss that team.

Berrington GONE! Big wicket! Didnt need to play it risky like that yet. Needed to bat longer. Scotland had a chance!

who wants to watch Scotland play west indies except the Indians lol

if it was Bangladesh vs west indies would have considered it since both teams are on par

Scotland have competed far better than Bangladesh would have. Just need to get rid that of Pakistani guy Safyan Shariff

was expecting big big support from the Indians but this thread barely got to 50 posts lol
Ipl is in 2 months, gen z will mostly be hooked on that. Only millenials like me and few cricket entusiasts would watch all international games. Times are changing bro. Younger lot have other things at hand

the other series happened about just over a year ago, do you call that long long time ago :D:D:D
West Indies were also underpowered. Hope, Hetmyer, Rutherford and Holder were missing in that squad.

Take out 4 of your first choice players (Faheem, Sahibzada, Saim, Agha)and you wouldn't have been just beaten but thrashed by Netherlands today.

These things matter :inti

Improvement over 2022 for WI when they lost to Scotland in the preliminary stage.

Hetmyer was excluded from the tournament for refusing to board the plane !

Ironically he's now the hero 4 years later.

December 18th 2024, to be precise when that series started and ended in 20th Dec 24. BD won the first match by 7runs, 2nd by 27runs and 3rd by 80runs.

TBF, there is very little interest in this game or cricket in general in Scotland. Doesn't help that the team is similar to a lot of other associates and filled with overseas players. Hard for people to relate with them.

This was Scotland's golden opportunity to go to Super Eight.

With this loss, they are effectively eliminated. I don't think they can beat England.

I agree, Bangladesh probably would’ve been a better option.

Even with the USA team, I don’t remember seeing a single player with a typically American name in the playing XI all up made up with India immigrants.

If I am not wrong, football is #1 in Scotland. They are crazy for football.

Cricket is a small niche sport there.

Correct. There is no white American player in the USA team.

It is mostly filled with Indians. There are a handful of Caribbeans, Pakistanis, South Africans, and 1 Kiwi (Corey Anderson).

It feels like an Indian B team. :inti

To be fair there are some Scottish born players in the Scotland team but in my opinion Cricket Scotland have recently started completely ignoring developing home grown talent to bring in failed cricketers from abroad.

Football will always be the number 1 sport throughout Scotland but cricket is not even in the top 10 and I don't think Cricket Scotland have done anything to grow the sport. There is a growing population of people with Pakistani or Indian heritage but Cricket Scotland largely ignore them or treat them with mistrust and this just creates a disconnect between the population most likely to follow the sport and the national team meant to be representing them.

I know I might be a bit biased since I used to play youth cricket in the Glasgow region and knew a few players in the same age group who had a lot of potential but they never even got called up for different age group trials and stopped playing. Normally to let someone less talented but from the "right" background to get called up.

I see.

Looks like there is a bit of racism at play.

It is very difficult for a sport to thrive when it is not a mainstream sport. Same reason why many other sports never flourish in subcontinent. :inti
