Kraig Braithwaite should buck the trend and start his captaincy with some flourish in batting.
Holder meanwhile is free of captaincy burden, hoping to see him start shining with bat and ball.

SL's batsmen will struggle against the Dukes ball. They just haven't showed the necessary discipline in Test cricket, and being bowled out for 172 in the warm-up isn't a good omen.

WI are in good touch at the moment. However it was a tight series last time these two met in 2018.

I expect WI to bully SL into submission. SL in the last 2 years have been atrocious in all formats

Any reports on how the pitch would be like ? WI have a great opportunity to go 2-0 and improve their Test Rankings.

Moisture and live grass on the surface. WI win the toss and bowl first.

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

West Indies (Playing XI): Kraigg Brathwaite(c), John Campbell, Nkrumah Bonner, Kyle Mayers, Jermaine Blackwood, Jason Holder, Joshua Da Silva(w), Rahkeem Cornwall, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Shannon Gabriel

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Dimuth Karunaratne(c), Lahiru Thirimanne, Oshada Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya de Silva, Pathum Nissanka, Niroshan Dickwella(w), Suranga Lakmal, Vishwa Fernando, Lasith Embuldeniya, Dushmantha Chameera

Mickey Arthurs SL is a joke team. WI should enjoy the free wins.

SL have been a joke team for years, no coach can change that. Domestic pitches are too spin friendly not allowing batsmen to play long innings, and the same old faces keep getting recycled.

Thirimanne has received so many chances, 38 Tests and only averages 23 !

What may be encouraging for them is there's some balls that've gripped and turned in the surface already.

Cornwall extracting good spin and bounce from the pitch within the first hour. Looks like a brilliant cricket wicket. Also helps considerably that the West Indies use the hand-woven dukes ball.

Windies and their dumb obsession with bowling first no matter what. They could have potentially won a test series in England last year if they weren't so stubborn about this.

Markhor why have they not picked Darren Bravo ?

Kept faith with the lineup that came good in Bangladesh.

They do seem a batter light, could've played Bravo ahead of Joseph, but I guess more chance of taking 20 wickets this way.

Good movement for Joseph, the decision to bowl first is correct. They should really be looking to bowl Sri Lanka out for less than 200.

54. 3

Lanka struggling here , they need the middle order and lower order to fight back and get some partnership going. Try to get to 300.

Thirimanne is an absolute enigma, his performance in domestic cricket indicates that he is one of the better top-order batsmen in Sri Lanka but he has failed miserably in test cricket over a long period of time.

The cupboard for Sri Lankan openers is empty though, much as it is in Pakistan.

In 10 years he has played only 38 test matches , that shows he has not been consistent. In First Class He averages 48 with 21 hundreds , but in Test only 28 after 38 , that is very poor for a top order Test batsman

I think his OD record is far better , he is pre dominantly a white ball player

Could watch Kemar Roach bowl around the wicket to LHBs all day.

One of those tireless bowlers who never stop running in for you. Should've had another wicket earlier but Blackwood dropped a sitter.

26 runs partnership so far , these two doing pretty well , just need to concentrate and keep rotating strike

129 . 5

37 runs unbroken partnership , if these two can bat on here Lanka can get a decent total

Nice partnership building between the two Sri Lankan batsman on the crease.

161/7

Mickey ain't going to be a happy man.

Sri Lanka bundled out for 169.

If I was a Sri Lankan player I would avoid Mickey Arthur in the dressing room.

Braiwaithe seems better tactically than Holder. He also captained at domestic level at a young age. He needs to perform with the bat and this change in captaincy could look like a master stroke. West Indies have the ability to be a solid test team in home conditions.

Lol Mickey Arthur and Grant Flower laughing their way all the way to the bank

Mickey would give non stop interviews as Pakistan's coach about how unprofessional Pakistani players were and the culture changes he had to bring.

I wonder how he now feels about his old job given his zero success with the Sri Lankan team? That perhaps dealing with the Pakistani players, team and the PCB was not that bad after all

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Jason Holder had the excellent figures of 5-27 as West Indies took full control over Sri Lanka on the opening day of the first Sandals Test match on Sunday. The tall seam bowler engineered a batting collapse as the last five wickets fell for 19 runs as the visitors were bowled out for 169 on a good surface at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

Holder registered his eighth five-wicket haul in Tests off 17.4 overs and in the process reached 200 first-class wickets. He was supported by Kemar Roach who took 3-47, to move to 33 wickets at this venue in his sixth match.

Holder started by having Dinesh Chandimal caught at the wicket by Josh Da Silva just before lunch to leave Sri Lanka at 54-3. He later accounted for top scorer Lahiru Thirimanne, who was bowled for 73 – which came off 180 balls and included four boundaries.

West Indies batted through the final hour to reach 13-0 at the close, with captain Kraigg Brathwaite on three not out and John Campbell on seven not out.

Speaking on the Sandals Player Zone, Holder said: “It’s very pleasing, the ball came out very well, my rhythm was very good, and I also managed to get some movement off the pitch, so it was great to get among the wickets and pick up a five-for on the first day. We bowled really well, and we couldn’t have asked for much more. The discipline I showed with the ball was the key. Hopefully, going on later in the game I could make another major contribution with bat and with the ball.”

He added: “It was really good to see the batsmen fighting it through this evening as well, in what was a very important period. We want to go on tomorrow and set up a big total. That would be important for us as well. We were also very good in the field.”

The match resumes on Monday at 10am (9am Jamaica Time).

Poor start to the day for the West Indies with Brathwaite dismissed cheaply.

West Indies are just plodding around with no intent to score at this stage, but there is still a lot of movement for the seamers so conditions are not easy.

Batting conditions must not be very easy hence the WI are taking their time.

No ball from Chameera, Mickey side punching the wall in disappointment.

Srl will have to restrict WI below 250 at max and ideally around 200 to remain in the game.

49 . 1

30 overs

WI playing very very slow , they just looking to survive here , but they can afford it , lots of time left in the game and a solid first innings total can seal the game for them

Why WI batting so slow . Almost 1.5 rpo . What's the game plan here ? Too much tuk tuking could also lead to wickets.

Not really easy playing against the Dukes ball which is why i would say don't take WI lightly when we tour them in October.

Finally some runs coming. WI should look at bat just once and get a huge lead.

I checked about the WI tour. It says the tour is in July/August .

Will be a great series as WI are a decent team at home.

You sure it's not October time? July wouldn't make sense in my view. I know that after the Zimbabwe tour we have WI in October followed by Bangladesh in December (away).

It will be a great series indeed but don't be surprised if WI deliver a KO punch, it's not the easiest place to score runs and patience is required to negotiate the Dukes ball.

WI still trail by around 100 runs , If lanka can get another couple of quick wickets here they can restrict them to a resonable lead.

Yes I also checked on the ICC FTP list and clicked on the Tours.pdf. WI Pakistan Test series is around July August this year.

Ah ok that's fair, I really wish that Pakistan have a practise game arranged cause I'm telling you now this will be the challenge of the year for Pakistan. August sounds about right.

Do you have a date yet for the Zimbabwe tour? I've not seen any dates yet for the matches.

The dates for the Zimbabwe Series have not been finalized yet but the series will start around/after 20 April and continue for most of the May.

As of now only dates for the SA series have been finalized.

3 Odis on 2, 4 and 7 April

4 T20s on 10, 12 , 14 and 16 April

Hmmm should've sent the guys to Zimbabwe separately next week, giving them enough time to quarantine and get some much needed practise.

WI trail by 58 runs .

With seven wickets in hand they should be aiming for a lead of at least 130 - 140 runs here
