What's new

West Indies [427 & 322/5] beat England [258 & 490/8d] by five wickets at Leeds, equalise series 1-1

Looks very gloomy out there.

Not quite Karachi 2000 levels though. England have to adopt some Moin Khan/Mourinho-esque timewasting skills.

Great reaction from Cook :afridi

Even if Cook had taken the catch there England wouldn't have won from that position. The best they can hope for is a draw.

is he being sarcastic?

This is going to be a historic win for the Windies. Their batting line-up suddenly looks quite strong. Take out Kyle Hope and add Darren Bravo and it will be even stronger

Wonder what Root will say at the press conference. Whether he will go the old English way and blame the pitch/ weather/conditions or just admit England were outplayed.

The dropped catches are not a good enough reason for losing because West Indies dropped way more catches.

the dropped catches even-ing themselves out now. Windies the deserved winners.

lol England. Humble pie for all the ex players and pundits that were dishing out unreasonable criticism at the Windies.

A GOAT performance from Hope in this Test.

Well, I say WI got lucky that England played some loose shots. If they had played better they would be 309-3. England aren't really trying and still beat WI by an innings and plenty. They will go on to win 3-0 and it would be 10-0 given enough tests. WI have not won a test in England in seventeen years, are an embarrassment to their illustrious firebears and should not have turned up.

Incredible what turn around for the West Indies ! take that @ all the naysayers

Fantastic win and great moment for West Indies cricket.

Nobody expected them to compete at Headingley. But not only did they compete, they went one better !

What a fun test. Some great bowling spells, some great knocks by Hope, Kraigg, Stokes and Ali, and a nice tense finish. Lots of funny drop catches and confrontations too.

I'm off. Long live test cricket.

I think it's a bit quick to dismiss people who had written WI off. They played the first test like a school team. Their away record is hardly better than Bangladesh. And they have played a lot more tests than BD.

I remember when in Jamaica around nine years ago, how England were decimated for 51 all out and people were singing the same songs of revival.

I've been disappointed by WI for nearly two decades. I'm sure others have been as well and for longer.

I hope that this is the beginning, but we all know that you don't become a completely different team after one match or series.

Root gave too much credit to his bowlers to get WI all out before they score 322 Runs !!!!

Especially against a team that had scored 427 in the first innings, and it wasn't as if England had great spinners to take advantage of a 5th day broken wicket.

Wasn't really a broken wicket. If anything it spun less on day 5 then it did the couple of days before.

Great win for the West Indies.

I am really annoyed by British Born people of Pakistan origin cheering for the West Indies. Eat, breathe live in this country yet cheer for someone else. Hypocrites.

Although hind sight is always considered 20/20 ..... check this out !!!!! To declare when England did ...... giving WI a chance to win ..... specially when they piled up 427 runs in the 1st innings ...... was a boo boo, I think !!!!!! Now, you can justify the declaration if you were DOWN 0-1 in series ..... but not if you were UP 1-0 ..... hmmmmm !!!!!! Now you can say it was BOLD .... COURAGEOUS .... whatever ..... but it can be called Foolish too !!!!

I actually meant what you said. I meant that 1) England did not have great spinners AND 2) the wicket did not break.

Ben Stokes bowled 5 overs in whole day

When nothing was working for the team, Stokes was bowled only for 5 overs.

Why didn't Root bowl him more?

What a wonderful test match!

Well done to WI. I gave them no chance after the first test. Especially impressed by young Hope. The first man to score a century in both innings in any match at Headingley. Not Sutcliffe, not Hutton, not Boycott, but a young lad from Barbados.

Well done to Root for his attacking declaration. Eight times out of ten, that would have worked.

The Root declaration is a non-issue. Haven't heard a peep about it down here, I do hope he's not being flayed in the press for trying to win a match. He set a target that gave his bowlers every chance to do the job, in conditions which allowed them to do so, if they were good enough. I doubt there's many bowlers who would regard Headingly as a road where they should be scared of defending 300 in the last innings of a test.

That out of the way, fantastic for WI cricket. Brathwaite is a nice, steady opener who has started to perform in a variety of conditions (reminds me a touch of Azhar in that he has a decent all round technique for most conditions, without being a specialist bully in any) and Hope is... well the new Hope of WI cricket.

Was especially good to see Roach & Gabriel performing together. For too long Roach was bowled into the ground as a lone workhorse- it might be his quickest days are behind him now due to that, but if Holder can offer a genuine 3rd holding style seamer role and allow Gabriel & Roach to attack at times then they have a balanced attack with genuine pace (Gabriel), height (Holder) & skill/experience (Roach).

I think they need n in form Darren Bravo (Dwayne is a myth of the worst kind) & Powell to go to the next level if they want to challenge the top teams consistently. The middle order is weak. But this is a nice moment for them.
