WEST INDIES GETTING SET FOR TOUR TO NEW ZEALAND

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) is pleased to announce that The West Indies Men’s Team will tour New Zealand later this year, from November 27 to December 15, for three T20 Internationals (T20I) and two Test matches. This follows confirmation by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) that they have received their Government’s approval to proceed with plans to host international cricket. The tour is subject to the final COVID-19 medical protocols being approved by the CWI Medical Advisory Committee and regional Government health and aviation officials.

CWI President Ricky Skerritt said: “We are pleased to be able to fulfill our obligation to tour New Zealand as we continue to get our ICC Future Tours Programme back on track, in spite of the financial difficulties we face. I want to thank CWI CEO Johnny Grave and Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams, and their operations team, for successfully partnering with NZC to make this tour possible. Earlier this summer, in collaboration with the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB), we restarted international cricket, globally. Fortunately, that England tour included the successful testing of safety protocols which we expect will be the standard for all international cricket tours. COVID-19 has created a most challenging period for cricketers and fans alike, with all the schedules being adjusted and amended. We see this tour as another timely opportunity to keep our players working and our fans entertained.”

The proposed West Indies tour to New Zealand will start with the defending T20 World Cup champions facing the Black Caps at Eden Park in Auckland for a match under lights. The series then moves to Mount Maunganui for two matches at the picturesque Bay Oval – the first a day match and the second under lights. West Indies will then travel to Hamilton for the first Test at Seddon Park and then south to Wellington for the second match at the historic Basin Reserve.

The T20Is will be the start of an 11-month schedule of matches building up to the ICC T20 World Cup, rescheduled for October 2021 in India. The opening contest at Eden Park will be added significance as this is the venue where the two teams met in their first T20I contest back in 2006. That match ended in a tie which forced a bowl-off.

Proposed Match Schedule:
November 27: 1st T20I at Eden Park, Auckland
November 29: 2nd T20I at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui
November 30: 3rd T20I at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui
December 3-7: 1st Test at Seddon Park, Hamilton
December 11-15: 2nd Test at Basin Reserve, Wellington

New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry is in doubt for the T20I series against West Indies that begins next month after breaking his thumb.

Henry was sidelined from Canterbury's Plunket Shield game after recieving a blow to his thumb while in the nets while batting. He is expected to take four to six weeks to heal, raising doubts over his participation for the home series against West Indies that begins on 27 November.

"Matt was unfortunately struck on the tip of the right thumb while batting in the nets," Canterbury physio Tim Dovbysh said. "Matt got an X-ray [done] immediately after training which confirmed the fracture. He’ll need a temporary rest from bowling but will still add value to the team at training and will start bowling when able.”

Earlier in the year, Henry broke his left thumb during the opening day of the third Test in Sydney. This injury comes at an unfortunate time with New Zealand having a busy summer scheduled after an extended break. Henry has also been in good form recently, having taken a four-wicket haul to help Canterbury bowl Wellington out for 65 in the first innings last week.

The Black Caps begin their home season with a three-match T20I series against West Indies. Post the T20I series, the two teams will also play two Tests as part of the ICC World Test Championship.

New Zealand are also scheduled to play Pakistan, Australia and Bangladesh in a jam-packed home season as cricket in the country returns to normalcy. The first round of Plunket Shield matches began on 19 October.

With so much cricket in the offing, the Kiwis are plagued by several injury concerns. Black Caps international players BJ Watling, Ajaz Patel and Henry Nicholls missed the first round of Shield games while skipper Kane Williamson, who is currently at the Indian Premier League in the UAE, is recovering from an adductor injury.

While Watling, Ajaz, Nicholls and Williamson are expected to be fit before the West Indies home series, Henry’s case is doubtful given his expected recovery period.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The members of the West Indies team based in the Caribbean departed from Barbados on Tuesday evening for the tour of New Zealand. All these squad members have completed COVID-19 tests and were all given a clean bill of health to travel.

On arrival in New Zealand, the squad will be based in Christchurch where they will quarantine before commencing training and warm-up matches. There are two squads, one for the three-match T20 International (T20I) Series and one for the two ICC World Test Championship matches which follow immediately afterwards. Six reserve players will travel with the Test squad to prepare and ensure replacements are available in case of any injury and, along with other members of the T20I squad, will form an ‘A’ Team to play two four-day matches concurrently with the Test team.

This is the West Indies second tour in 2020, the only international team to fulfil two away tours during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI, said the organisation is fully committed to ensuring the game thrives amidst the challenging environment.

“As the players and support staff depart on the journey to New Zealand, we wish them the very best – this is a very important tour for us as we build towards defending our ICC T20 World Cup title and also complete another series in the ICC World Test Championship. Fans all around the world have been missing their favourite sports, so we want to continue to play our part to bring joy and smiles to the faces of those who support and enjoy our cricket,” Grave said.

“This itinerary and schedule took a lot of detailed planning and we want to thank everyone who played a part in putting it together. In the present COVID-19 environment everything requires great attention to detail. Our medical and logistics teams here have been working very closely with their counterparts in New Zealand to ensure everyone would be in a safe environment which is also conducive to exciting and entertaining cricket on the field.”

Phil Simmons leads the coaching staff as Head Coach. The coaching staff includes Roddy Estwick, Monty Desai, Rayon Griffith, Andre Coley and Trevor Penny, as the Assistant Coaches.
The T20I Series will start with the defending World Cup champions facing the Black Caps at Eden Park in Auckland for a match under lights.

The opening contest at Eden Park will have added significance as this is the venue where the two teams met in their first T20I contest back in 2006. That match ended in a tie which forced a dramatic bowl-off, won by the home side. Three years later the teams met again at the same venue and played to another tie which was decided by the first ever T20I Super Over, won by the West Indies.

All members of the West Indies touring party, currently in managed isolation in Christchurch, have returned negative results from the first of three COVID-19 tests, this one conducted on Day 3 at their managed isolation facility. Tests will again be conducted on Day 6, and on Day 12.

Why isn't Pooran being developed as a test batsman. Hetmyer is going backwards and looks overweight and rubbish. Pooran should be the guy the team should be built around.

Shai Hope deservedly dropped. Hasn't done anything in Test cricket since the Headingley tons.

Coach Gary Stead has given an update on injuries to BLACKCAPS players missing from tomorrow’s third round of the Plunket Shield.

BLACKCAPS Injury Update Nov 4

Tim Southee (Northern Districts) - back. Precautionary. Likely to be back for round four.

Neil Wagner (Northern Districts) - hip/groin. Awaiting scan results. Hopeful of returning in round four.

Colin de Grandhomme (Northern Districts) - right foot. Awaiting scan results, hopefully by end of tomorrow.

Henry Nicholls (Canterbury) – left calf. Progressing well and on target to return in round four.

Ajaz Patel (Central Stags) – left calf. Awaiting scan results.

Matt Henry (Canterbury) - broken right thumb. 4-6 week recovery.

Stead said the following.

“Injuries are always a concern and we’re certainly monitoring each case closely with our medical staff.

“Tim Southee and Henry Nicholls are both expected to be fit for round four of the Plunket Shield.

“Neil Wagner and Colin de Grandhomme both have niggles and we are awaiting scan results on their respective injuries to ascertain the next steps.

“Likewise, Ajaz Patel had a scan on his left calf after suffering a setback in his return to play rehabilitation.

“An update on Neil, Ajaz and Colin will be provided once their scan results have been received and assessed.”

The West Indies squad begun training in New Zealand, on Tuesday, after being given the all-clear following negative COVID-19 test results.

The team and management unit has been in isolation since arriving in the country last Friday. Under New Zealand’s rigorous testing program, the team had to spend the first three days in isolation and then return a negative test before they could begin training in small groups at New Zealand Cricket’s High Performance Centre.

The squad must now undergo two further tests on Day 6 and Day 12 before they are allowed to train in larger groups.

The tour will bowl off with a T20I series against the Black Caps at Eden Park in Auckland under lights. The series then moves to Mount Maunganui for two matches at Bay Oval – the first a day match and the second under lights. The team will then travel to Hamilton for the first Test at Seddon Park and then south to Wellington for the second match at the historic Basin Reserve.

Match Schedule:

November 27: 1st T20I at Eden Park, Auckland

November 29: 2nd T20I at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui

November 30: 3rd T20I at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui

December 3-7: 1st Test at Seddon Park, Hamilton

December 11-15: 2nd Test at Basin Reserve, Wellington

Please be advised all members of the West Indies touring party, currently in managed isolation in Christchurch, have returned negative results from the second of three COVID-19 tests, this one conducted on Day 6. All members of the touring party will be tested again on Day 12 and, if clear, will leave managed isolation two days later.

NZC was yesterday made aware that some members of the West Indies team had contravened protocols within the Managed Isolation Facility in Christchurch.

These incidents included some players compromising bubble integrity by sharing food, and socialising in hallways.

There is no evidence, or suggestion, that any members of the touring party left the facility, or that any unauthorised persons accessed it.

NZC is supportive of the Ministry of Health and Government position.

Public health and safety has always been our primary focus in hosting overseas teams and this remains our No.1 priority.

NZC will continue working with the West Indies team and management, and relevant Government agencies, to ensure there is no repeat of these violations.

The West Indies squad had their final COVID-19 tests today and, results permitting, is scheduled to leave managed isolation on Friday and travel to Queenstown ahead of two matches against New Zealand A.

Statement from Cricket West Indies on COVID-19 protocols in New Zealand

This morning, Cricket West Indies (CWI) was informed that some members of our New Zealand touring party had contravened the strict COVID-19 protocols within the team’s Managed Isolation Facility in Christchurch.

The New Zealand Ministry of Health has advised us that all members of the West Indies touring party will now be unable to train for the remainder of the quarantine period and will have to complete their quarantine within the Managed Isolation Facility only. CWI is in full support of the New Zealand Ministry of Health’s position.

From the information we have received so far, we have been told that the incidents in question included some players compromising the bubble integrity by mixing between two separate West Indies bubbles into which the touring party had been split, by sharing food and socialising in hallways. There is no evidence, or suggestion, that any members of the touring party left the facility, or that any unauthorised persons accessed it.

Ahead of the tour to New Zealand, the West Indies touring party all returned two negative COVID-19 tests before leaving the Caribbean, and underwent two further tests since they have been in New Zealand. All results were negative.

The players underwent their final scheduled tests this morning and, results permitting, are scheduled to leave the Managed Isolation Facility on Friday to travel to Queenstown ahead of two warm-up matches against New Zealand “A”.

CWI has already begun an internal investigation into the reported incidents

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today named the vice-captains for the upcoming series in New Zealand. Nicholas Pooran will be vice-captain for the three T20 Internationals (T20Is), while Roston Chase has been named vice-captain for the two International Cricket Council's World Test Championship matches.

Batting all-rounder Roston Chase, 28, has so far played 35 Test matches, scoring five centuries and collecting three five-wicket hauls with his off-spin bowling. Wicket-keeper/batsman Pooran, 25, is among the leading white-ball players with two half-centuries in 19 T20I innings and also averaging close to 50 in One Day Internationals.

Roger Harper, CWI’s Lead Selector said: “Roston Chase has been appointed vice captain of the West Indies Test Team for this tour of New Zealand. He is an experienced player who is tactically aware and very purposeful in his approach to the game. He is readily willing to offer advice and discuss ideas with his fellow players and the coaches and I think will offer good leadership support to captain Jason Holder both on and off the field. Nicholas Pooran continues in the role of vice-captain of the T20I Team for the tour of New Zealand. He was first named vice-captain for this format for the series against Afghanistan in 2019.”

Roston Chase said: “I have been making strides in Test cricket since my debut back in 2016 and I see this new role as vice-captain as an honour. It is just for me to try and carry on and try to achieve great things for West Indies. It is all about offering support to the captain, coach and other players as we try to plan strategy and put more wins on the board.”

Nicholas Pooran said: “I see this as another opportunity to learn and grow in the game. I was vice- captain for the tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year, so this is continuation of that work. It’s always good to share your knowledge as we look to continue the winning mentality. We were successful in Sri Lanka and this is series we believe we can get more success against New Zealand.”

Nicholls, Conway & Young to face West Indies in Queenstown

BLACKCAPS batsman Henry Nicholls has been named in a strong New Zealand A side to face the West Indies in a three-day game in Queenstown next week, eight months on from his last game of cricket.

A calf injury had forced the Canterbury left-hander to miss the opening three rounds of the Plunket Shield, but he’s on track to return this weekend against the Otago Volts in Alexandra, before getting an early look at the tourists from Friday November 20, at John Davies Oval.

Wellington Firebirds star Devon Conway will receive his first representative chance since becoming eligible to play for the BLACKCAPS in August, alongside Test back-up batting incumbent Will Young.

Four Otago Volts feature in the bowling unit along with five-cap BLACKCAP and Central Stags paceman Blair Tickner.

Canterbury captain Cole McConchie will lead the side with Dane Cleaver taking the gloves.

The match will be the first of two red-ball games against the West Indies in Queenstown and forms the start of a five-game long-form sequence for New Zealand A, which will also face Pakistan A in two four-day games in December.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead said it was going to be a busy season for New Zealand’s elite cricketers.

“It’s been a year like no other and we’re very fortunate to be preparing for such an action packed summer,” said Stead.

“The complexities of the international schedule, along with the size of the touring squads and the length of time they will spend in the country has enabled us to build a very strong A programme.

“The flip-side of this is that pressure will be put on our player pool this season and we need to be smart with how we use our resources, therefore we’ll likely add and subtract from this squad as we go along.

“It’s great to get Henry back on the park after what I know has been a frustrating winter with his left calf injury. He’ll turn out for Canterbury this weekend in the Plunket Shield before heading to Queenstown to face the West Indies and we’re confident if he comes through both games unscathed he’ll be ready for the first Test in Hamilton on December 3.

“It’s an exciting time for Devon who’s had to wait for his opportunity at this level after some outstanding form on the domestic scene.

“Plenty of eyes will also be on the four Otago bowlers who have been rewarded for their strong performances so far this year and in recent seasons.”

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand – All members of the West Indies team have returned negative results from their third and final COVID-19 tests, conducted on Day 12 of the ongoing tour of New Zealand.

The players, management and support staff are scheduled to leave managed isolation on Friday and travel to the southern town of Queenstown, where they will play a three-day match and a four-day match against New Zealand “A” on November 20-22 and November 26-29 at the John Davies Oval.

Additionally, all of the West Indies players who arrived on Thursday following the end of the Indian Premier League in the United Arab Emirates, have passed initial health checks. These players are: T20I captain Kieron Pollard, Test captain Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Fabian Allen, Keemo Paul and Sheldon Cottrell. They have entered the managed isolation facility in Christchurch to commence their mandatory quarantine.

With New Zealand set to start its home cricket season later this month by playing a T20 International series against West Indies, its cricket board has ensured there are back-up plans to switch venues in case Covid-19 alert levels at a host venue go up.

The Kiwis have a packed schedule this summer with visits from West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Australia (men and women) and England women.

"New Zealand Cricket has backup plans to switch venues if one region was to have its alert levels raised, and matches will still go ahead without crowds if there was a move to (alert) level two," a report in stuff.co.nz said.

West Indies are due to play three T20 Internationals and two Test matches after which Pakistan (three T20Is and two Tests), Australia (five T20 Internationals) and Bangladesh (three ODIs and three T20 Internationals) visit.

New Zealand have been following quarantine rules strictly. On Wednesday, West Indies men's cricket team, currently in New Zealand, was denied training privileges after some of its members had broken the managed isolation rules.

Wellington Firebirds batsman Devon Conway has been included in his first BLACKCAPS squad, selected for the season opening KFC T20I series against the World Champion West Indies.

Conway and Kyle Jamieson are the two new faces in the T20 side which will be captained by Tim Southee, with Kane Williamson and Trent Boult to focus on the Test series.

Southee, Jamieson and Ross Taylor are only available for the first two T20Is, at Eden Park on Friday November 27 and Bay Oval on the Sunday, before heading to Hamilton to join an unchanged 13-man Test squad on Monday November 30.

With the third and final T20I at Bay Oval also on the Monday, Mark Chapman, Doug Bracewell and Scott Kuggeleijn will join the T20 squad as cover for the three Test players.

BLACKCAPS coach Gary Stead said it was truly exciting to be unveiling his first squads of the season.

“I think we’re all very aware and appreciative of how much work has gone in to make this home summer possible - in what is clearly unprecedented times,” he said.

“The season schedule is complex and for the first time we’re going to have a BLACKCAPS Test squad assembling on the same day we’re playing a T20 International in another city.

“We’ve got players at quite different stages with some having played almost a month of domestic cricket, some in managed isolation following the IPL and others battling injuries.

“Firstly, we have a challenging T20 series against an opposition full of stars with plenty of big game experience. The three-game series is over just four days so we’ll need to hit the ground running to build some momentum for the summer.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming Devon into our environment for the first time and I’m sure he’ll soak up the experience.

“We’ve had to make a decision on Kane and Trent to prioritise the Test matches, given how important they are to our red-ball team and the fact they both played such big roles in the recent IPL while also managing injuries.

“There’s no secret we’re right in the hunt for the World Test Championship Final following our two-nil win over India and having Trent and Kane fully fit and focussed for the upcoming series will be crucial.”

Auckland Aces batsman Glenn Phillips has earned a T20 recall after impressing at the recent Caribbean Premier League, while Hamish Bennett has retained his spot after strong showings against India earlier this year.

Fresh from the IPL - Lockie Ferguson, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner and Tim Seifert are set to finish their managed isolation on Thursday November 26 and link up with the T20 squad that evening ahead of the opening match on the Friday night in Auckland.

Stead will take a ‘wait and see’ approach with the fitness of Test incumbents Colin de Grandhomme (right-foot) and Ajaz Patel (left-calf), but said he’d give them every chance of being available for the first Test starting in Hamilton on December 3.

“Colin and Ajaz have quite different injuries which are requiring different return to play protocols. It’s too early at this stage to definitively say what their chances are but we’re hopeful the next two weeks will make that clearer.”

Stead also clarified the decision to omit Colin Munro from the T20 squad.

“With Colin heading to the Big Bash and therefore unavailable for the Pakistan T20 series pre-Christmas, the selectors are keen to look at other batting options at the top of the order.”

Scenic!

Amazing! Must be breathtaking to play in such a place. I wish in Pakistan we developed the Muzaffarabad stadium more, it can be just as beautiful.

The ground isn't as scenic anymore because of the development around it. If somehow they can take the game away from the established centers and cities and develop sports cities, only then will our grounds have a scenic feel to them.

I think PCB and the government should invest in such a venture, a sports city away from major cities dedicated to cricket and other sports could be the way forward. We all know that the revenue is in broadcast and not gate receipts so it's something to ponder.

Even NAMAL uni's cricket ground btw is more scenic than AJK ground now.

I agree, lots of houses cropping up on the mountain ranges nearby, but it’s still very beautiful. There was a game that took place there a year ago, this one: https://youtu.be/gVpHnwbe3d8 and it still looks like an absolutely gorgeous place to play cricket in.

Mitchell replaces De Grandhomme for Tests | Santner called up to captain final T20

BLACKCAPS all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC World Test Championship series against West Indies due to bone bruising in his right-foot and will be replaced by Daryl Mitchell.

Spinner Ajaz Patel’s left calf tear has improved, but not enough to be available for the first Test starting next Thursday in Hamilton, with Mitchell Santner drafted into the squad as spin cover.

Santner, who is set to play the opening KFC T20I at Eden Park on Friday night after coming out of managed isolation this Thursday, has also been confirmed to become the eighth BLACKCAPS T20 captain when he takes over from Tim Southee for the third and final match of the series at Bay Oval on Monday.

Coach Gary Stead confirmed the changes at Eden Park on Wednesday.

“The unavailability of Colin and Ajaz has obviously had a flow on effect to our T20 squad who are providing the replacement players for the Test squad,” he said.

“I highlighted last week how tight and complex the schedule was - so when you throw in some injuries, it really begins to challenge how you juggle your resources.

“Mitch and Daryl will be available for the final T20 game, before linking up with the Test squad on Tuesday where we will monitor them closely to ensure they’re fit and fresh ahead of the first Test on Thursday.

“They both proved last summer in the Tests against England what they can do in our conditions with Mitch scoring a century and claiming three wickets at Bay Oval, while Daryl produced a polished half-century on debut at Seddon Park.

“I’d like to acknowledge Mitch Santner for taking on the responsibility to captain the T20 side. It’s a great honour to lead your country and I know his calm demeanour along with the sheer amount of international experience he’s amassed in the past five years will hold him in good stead.

“With just two days between the two series, we’ve made the decision to have our T20 players, who are also Test regulars, assemble in Hamilton on the Monday and that reflects our focus on the World Test Championship.

“It’s disappointing for Colin to be ruled out of the Tests completely and he’ll now target being fit and available for the Boxing Day Test at Bay Oval.

“Ajaz will join the team in Hamilton to have treatment and train. We will make a call on the second Test in Wellington closer to the time.”

Since debuting in 2015, Santner’s played 138 times for the BLACKCAPS, including 44 T20 internationals.

His 52 T20I wickets are the most by any BLACKCAPS bowler since his debut and he is currently ranked sixth in the ICC T20 bowling rankings.

All 20 of the BLACKCAPS and West Indies IPL players and support staff, currently in managed isolation in Christchurch, have returned negative results from their third and final, Day 12, COVID-19 tests. This means all are on track to leave managed isolation tomorrow, starting from 10am, once the final clearance has been issued.

@Saj, do you know if this series will be on Sky? And do you know if Pakistan vs New Zealand will be on sky sports or not? Could you find out where these series will be broadcasted in the UK?

BRATHWAITE ENSURES SOUND START FOR WEST INDIES

Opening batsman unbeaten after first day's play

The West Indies will begin day two of their four-day match against New Zealand A in Queenstown with opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite needing just 17 further runs for a first-class double century.

Brathwaite carried his bat through the first day's play to take the tourists to 353 for three at stumps, after captain Darren Bravo had won the toss and batted at John Davies Oval.

Bravo himself reached 93 as the pair shared a 189-run stand for the second wicket, with no joy for the NZ A bowlers throughout the middle session.

The first match between the two sides ended in a draw last week.

Lol looks like NZ is preparing flat tracks for the practice matches before springing green tops for the Test matches.

Don’t be surprised if we see some Shaheens making good excellent scores against NZ A and then Pakistan bundling out for 180 on Day 1 of the 1st Test.

Brathwaite and Bravo are getting runs which is important for WI.

NZ seem to have had some injuries about but still expect them to win comfortably at home.

Fancode will officially stream the Test series also between New Zealand Vs West Indies. It'll be a paid subscription just like the T20i series.

BRATHWAITE'S TOWERING CAREER BEST FOR WEST INDIES
Anchorman notches double century in mammoth total

The West Indies reached one of their highest first-class totals against a New Zealand side after Kraigg Brathwaite carried on to a career-best double century on day two of the New Zealand A four-day fixture in Queenstown today.

Having resumed on 183 not out overnight, the Test batsman had spent more than four sessions at the crease before he was finally dismissed on 246 after 552 minutes at the crease.

Brathwaite's wicket opened the door to more regular rewards for the hard-working New Zealanders in the field at John Davies Oval, the West Indies eventually all out for a mammoth 571 in 162.1 overs.

New Zealand A was 45 for no loss in reply after surviving the 15 overs before stumps.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — The Cricket West Indies Selection Panel has advised that fast bowler Kemar Roach and wicket-keeper/batsman Shane Dowrich are unavailable for the second and final Test Match against New Zealand. Both players will return home — Roach due to the death of his father and Dowrich for personal reasons.

Additionally, left-hander Shimron Hetmyer is still under concussion protocols following the blow to his head sustained in the second T20 International, while all-rounder Keemo Paul is still being treated for a groin injury. They are both being closely monitored by the team's medical staff and decisions on their availability will be made at a later date.

The panel has called up young wicket-keeper/batsman Joshua DaSilva as a replacement for Dowrich, while middle-order batsman Nkrumah Bonner and left-arm fast bowler Preston McSween will remain with the squad as cover.

The second Test will be played at the historic Basin Reserve in Wellington, starting on Friday (Thursday 6pm Eastern Caribbean Time/5pm Jamaica Time). West Indies trail 0-1 after New Zealand won the first match by an innings and 134 runs.

A New Zealand A side brimming with BLACKCAPS has assembled in Nelson to take on West Indies A in a four-day First Class match at Saxton Oval starting tomorrow.

The match was originally slated as a New Zealand XI game, but was upgraded to a First Class fixture following Pakistan’s choice to play intra-squad matches in Queenstown instead of playing New Zealand A.

The change means a much stronger side has assembled in Nelson featuring a total of eight current or former BLACKCAPS including T20 stars Glenn Phillips, Jimmy Neesham and Tim Seifert.

Central Stags all-rounder Doug Bracewell has been named to captain the side which will be coached by Stephen Cunis with Brendon Donkers his assistant.

Kane Williamson back with Black Caps after leaving training to be with pregnant wife

Gary Stead is confident Kane Williamson will be available for the second test against West Indies after the Black Caps captain missed training in order to be with his pregnant wife.

Williamson revealed that he and his wife Sarah Raheem were expecting their first child during the first match of the series last week and that the due date was mid-to-late December - right in the middle of a busy summer of cricket.

Williamson had traveled back to his home town of Tauranga to attend a midwife appointment and backup batsman Devon Conway had been drafted into the squad as cover.

However, the Black Caps announced Williamson will return from Tauranga later today to rejoin the test squad in Wellington, calming fears that the world's number two ranked batsman would be missing from the second test. Conway was subsequently released to fly to Nelson to join New Zealand A to take on West Indies A in a four-day match.

Stead has spoken to Williamson and is confident he will be available to play in the second test starting at the Basin Reserve on Friday.

While today's training session was not a crucial one in terms of the side's general preparations - it is optional and indoors because of rain in Wellington - the potential loss of Williamson would've been a big blow for the Black Caps.

Williamson scored 251, his third double century in test cricket, as part of a winning performance by the Black Caps in the first match of the West Indies series and looks in ever-fine form ahead of tours against Pakistan and Australia over the remainder of the summer.

Despite the potential disruption caused by his absence, Stead said a contingency plan is in place for what would be a milestone event in Williamson's life.

"Worst case scenario Kane misses some matches," Stead told media on Monday. "As a dad, as a parent, you only get that opportunity once in your life to be there for your (first) child's birth and I know that it's important for Kane too.

"At the end of the day we play cricket and other things are much more important."

"It's a very exciting time in anybody's life and it certainly is in mine," said Williamson of impending fatherhood.

Should Williamson miss time, Stead has indicated that Will Young, who made his test debut last week, was the "natural replacement" for the skipper.

Meanwhile, the Black Caps received more good news in the form of the full recovery of BJ Watling from a hamstring injury and will return to the side.

Tom Blundell will open the batting order with Tom Latham and Will Young will drop out of the starting XI - barring Williamson's absence. A decision on which all-rounder - Darryl Mitchell or Mitchell Santner - will make the starting team will be made tomorrow morning.

The second test is scheduled to begin on Friday at 11 am at the Basin Reserve where today's rain is forecast to clear for the full five days of play.
