What's new

West Indies v England | 21st -25th April, 2015 | 2nd Test | St. George's

The conditions out there are beautiful for batting, flat deck the heaven open and Mo farts. Wasted a golden opportunity to get some runs under his belt

Root my favourite England player at the moment, what a fine prospect. He's made more centuries then some West indians that have played double or triple the amount of games he has. Got to love his signature drives through the covers, masterfully opens the face and keeps the scoreboard ticking. That hundred came at a strike rate of 80

urghh someone needs to punch marlon samuels in the face

My feeling is that promoting Smith to number 3 will be a mistake.

Warner and Smith have improved a lot. I don't want them both in the top 3. Smith still moves around too much to bat at 3 in a test match in my opinion.

I would actually prefer Watto at number 3 scoring his usual 20-30 with Smith further back. Yes that means Mitch Marsh misses out but we need to pick the lineup which maximises our chance of winning.
And to me Smith will score more runs in the middle order than in the top order and he'll make up for any runs we lose by putting Watson at 3.

And Voges ahead of Shaun Marsh. Marsh's best is better than Voges but I know which one the two I'd trust if there was a collapse.

The fact the Clarke has signed on as the Melbourne Stars Captain in the BBL probably means he will retire after the Ashes. Voges has enough left in the tank to hang a round for a few years and support Smith's leadership.

Watson's little 20s and 30s are useful at 3. Like he's a specialist nightwatchman! :afridi

Very nice hundred from Root, scored at an unusually high strike rate for an English batsman which in itself gives us an improved chance of winning the game.

Another 70 runs would be lovely - have to win this time.

Three stodgy batters at the top are slowing them down. They need a Tresco type to open. Four through seven all score at a decent clip.

The Trott selection to open is just too defensive.

Reeks of Moores and Cook not backing England against the Kiwi and Australian bowlers.

With Ballance, Bell and Root all scoring runs they don't need Trott as an opener.

Concur. It's a retrograde step which smacks of fear. I'd be trying the lad Lyth. Trott should be there in case Ballance or someone gets injured.

England into the black!

Get the six, seven and eight thunderbats in tomorrow, power to a 200 lead, hope it turns on the last day and ENG go one up with one to play.

England need to be careful: this is getting into "flippin' murdered them" territory!

I thought after Day 2 that it was important to score as quickly as possible on Day 3 and ensure that the West Indies are batting again by lunch on Day 4.

In effect, at the start of Day 4 England are 74-6.

If they bat until lunch they lead by 175 and if they bat until tea they will lead by 275.

But if they bat that long they reduce the amount of time that the West Indies must bat into Chanderpaul's range.

I'm not convinced that the pitch is going to deteriorate - I think that the key is for England to ensure that they have 120 overs to bowl the West Indies out and then enough time to knock off enough runs.

Personally, I expect England to be all out for 480, a lead of 180, just after lunch. And if that happens I think they can bowl the West Indies out by lunch on Day 5 and have no more than 80 runs to knock off to win.

Lead of 100-150 should be enough here but still what was that from stokes last night? awful innings the bloke has plenty of talent but he even manages to make warner look like a bright spark.

Good fightback from WI from 334-4. All the thunderbats are back in the hutch. Only bowlers left to keep company with Rooooooooot. That 200-run lead I wanted could be just 80 or so.

He's still clever than Nic Maddinson from what I have seen

England might actually be in a better position if the tail is rolled here.

Force the Windies to try and score something England can't chase down

My point exactly.

The longer England bat, the less time the West Indies need to survive.

Root clearly disappointed, wanted the double and he should have!

A ripper from James to get rid of Dev.Smith

England don't have an extraordinary bowler. You need a Lillee or a Waqar on a deck like this.

Can you think of any tearaway fast bowlers on the county circuit? I can't from the top of my head. We need someone like steve harmison to destroy a line up on a deck like this with speed and bounce

Which is why playing 90 mph stokes and moeen Ali was probably a bad idea. England are playing a genuine seamer short and will struggle to force a result here.

But which "genuine seamer"? There is no seam to be found on that wicket. There is only Plunkett and he wouldn't take wickets on that either. They need Finn back at full speed.

Which spinner instead of Moeen? They could have picked the leggie but he would be more likely to go for 0-100 than take five wickets on this.

Finn isn't in the squad? My bad then. Although WI are weaker against leg spin than against Ali. So Rashid might've been a better option.

Nope. Finny is bowling for Middlesex today. Hope they can sort him out. Maybe he should be looking at old videos of himself.

Since Jordan and Stokes are very similar types of bowler, and Stokes is a test batsman I would drop Jordan and try Rashid in the third test just to try to break the deadlock.

Ooooh, Jimmy has got 3-3 with the new ball. WI 77-5 in effect.....

This is some of the best bowling that Anderson has ever produced. World-class. Will it be enough?

Terrific bowling from Anderson. Have given England the break they needed. Now Barbie has to get rid of the tail and close this match out :)

Anderson with a great catch and a brilliant run out. Winning the game on his own!

Magnificent from Anderson, but awful collapse from West Indies. Blackwood and Holder will look back on those wickets with embarassment.

One of England's best sessions of cricket since India 2012 - intense pressure, magnificent bowling and relentless out-fielding.

Oh man...He is everywhere.A nice catch followed by this fantastic throw.Finished off WI on his own.

Come on England, don't get stuck on 7 wickets again.

Roach is one of the better tailenders in world cricket today, a real pain in the backside. Not going to be easy to dismiss him.

Bichu is another great tailender, batted really well in the WI. My gut is telling me Eng will bowl them out with a lead of 220-250

125-8

Got to knock the last two over quickly after lunch.

Anderson was outstanding, great effort on a flat wicket. One of his best spells

About 60 overs left, England don't need to do anything silly and they should be able to win this. Chasing low totals on a day 5 wickets can be tricky though, they just need around 3 runs per over hopefully they don't put too much pressure on themselves.

Some cheap wickets for the beard, but Anderson bowled a superb, potentially match-winning spell. England should coast to a victory here, more than enough time.

Cook and Trott should look to play some positive cricket for a change.

I hope Windies get some fluky wickets and have Eng down 3 for 10 to make this a game.

Anderson doesn't get enough credit, he should be seen on the same level of willis, botham etc he was criticised for not bowling a match winning spell in the 1st Test or just changing the game in a moment of brilliance, but he has done it here.

Shanon Gabriel is a good prospect. 150+ guys are rare, hope windies take good care of him.

His speed is very impressive and fitness! was bowling consistently at 90mph throughout the test match and hit 94mph a few times to. But beyond his speed he doesn't really have much skill with the ball, hopefully develops into something descent in the future. Needs to learn reverse swing.

Cross-Seam delivery angled in and bowled! too quick for trott, I've said it before but it is absolutely nonsensical opening with Trott

He is pretty much a bowling machine calibrated at 90mph at the moment. He would be a nightmare to face if he gets his away swingers on point.

Trott's return to the team could be short-lived. He's not working as an opener, and Ballance has made number 3 his own, and then you have Root, Bell and Stokes.

Has nothing apart from pace. Even Roach was a 150+ bowler sometime back but he has lost it now. Also Gabriel might break down, I suspect. Looks very injury prone.

Its like Dale Steyn said, you are either born with lots of fast twitch muscle fibres or you aren't. Gabriel obviously has good Genetics, whether he cashes on 'em or not, remains to be seen.

Yeah but Dale Steyn is the best managed fast bowler on the planet having played for a decade with more than 500 wickets across 3 formats. Also Steyn bowls within himself most of the time. Only for the occasional spell does he go for that extra bit of pace.

Not as good as Willis. More comparable to Botham, though Sir Ian changed more matches than Jimmy. He was an intimidating figure who could get wickets with his personality.

Bad luck Holder, looks nasty......

Ouch that looked nasty, England Doctor was out there offering help to. British people are very nice aren't they ;)

I don't like Botham, seems like a bit of a douche. Anderson is more likeable and he has more wickets to, longevity is underrated. Botham could have had a few more had he not been so fat

Looks like an easy win now (I hope?!), and thoroughly deserved.

Cook is looking something like his old self again, some crunching shots. :)

They play trott at no.3 as if they want him to fail, he has rarely opened in F/C cricket. Ballance needs to open, it's unfair but Trott is a better no.3.

Should win from here unless something bizarre happens

Oh yeah, he would have had 450 test wickets instead of 383 if he had looked after himself better. As was he did hold the record for a couple of years until Hadlee passed him.

Not to everyone's taste as a human being but he did raise £10M for childhood leukaemia research.

Anyway, this match has done Chef a power of good. Runs in both innings, decent field-setting tactics and by the looks of it a win in the bag.

Fair enough to him, I know he does his bit for charity and that's good. But growing up everyone around me didn't like him so it brushed off on me.

He never looked after himself and that's not Andersons fault, people need to change their perspectives on longevity which tends to mean nothing when compared to impactfulness. Had botham looked after himself better England probably would not have lost so many games, the games which he could have been playing had he been fit/healthy. Anderson on the hand is in perfect shape, works hard in the gym and will serve England for as long as his body allows him god willing. He won't be complacent when it comes to diet/training, it won't be his downfall.
