Jaswant Singh's "Jinnah: India, Partition and Independence". A great read putting forward the Quaid's perspective. The author showed great respect to the founding father of Pakistan greatly offending his own people in the process. He admitted that the creation of Pakistan had become unavoidable with hundred's of million's Muslim's unwilling to live under majority Hindu rule.

If you are asking about modern English language novelists, I suggest Steinbeck and Orwell.

To Kill a Mocking Bird is fab.

Jane Austen probably wrote the book on the modern English novel, if you can stand her subject matter.
