ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif disapproved on Friday of the ‘double standards of justice’ meted out to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in the cases against him, adding that the coalition government would take every step to ensure the rule of law in the country.

Chairing a meeting of the federal cabinet, he said other political leaders in the country faced trials and tough handling, while Imran was given “privileged treatment”. He termred the Supreme Court’s bail relief to him “nothing but an NRO” (National Reconciliation Order).

The minister remarked that if the “favourite” continued to be favoured, then all dacoits behind bars should be also released across Pakistan.

“These are the double standards that have brought about the death of justice,” he said as he expressed astonishment over the remarks of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial's remarks during yesterday’s hearing where the top judge said that he was pleased to see Imran.

He pointed out that thousands of cases by the general public were pending before the courts while some political figures were being given special favours of bail on a priority basis.

Shehbaz criticised how similar leniency was not given to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif or other members of the cabinet. He lamented that “no one” spoke to Nawaz about the “injustices” he suffered.

The prime minister said that the judiciary also protected Imran Khan in his corruption cases. He maintained that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Billion Tree Tsunami, as well as the Malam Jabba development projects had solid proofs of corruption by PTI, but the cases were not pursued.

He continued that "Imran Khan was part of an agenda to bring fascist rule to the country for 10 years".

According to the premier, May 9 – the day of Imran’s arrest – was a painful day in the country’s history as Imran’s party unleashed havoc by attacking national and military installations. He said that such scenes were not observed since the fall of Dhaka in 1973.

He recalled that despite the tragedy of the assassination of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Benazir Bhutto, his husband, former president Asif Zardari, raised the slogan of ‘Pakistan Khappay’ - meaning ‘Long Live Pakistan’ - as a great gesture of nationalism. He further added that nobody destroyed military installations even after the “judicial murder” of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

PM Shehbaz also recollected that he was in prison when his mother passed away, but he passed the time with patience rather than inciting riots.

He said that Imran was the “mastermind and planner” behind the attacks on military institutions, terming it a disgrace to the martyred military personnel who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

Shehbaz maintained that the country was passing through a difficult time and the coalition government was making efforts to address the inherited challenges.

He criticised the PTI leadership for pushing the country toward the brink of a dangerous situation. He said that for months, the PTI chief made false and shameless claims about his ouster from the rule through a “regime change” by the United States.

Shehbaz said the coalition government made tireless efforts to mend relations with the US in a diplomatic manner, while Imran ultimately changed his stance against the US.

He highlighted that the PTI regime violated an agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the current government was attempting to repair that. He added that his predecessor made every effort for the country to default.

The prime minister continued that Imran had incurred every possible damage to the very fabric of society by promoting hatred and intolerance.

PM Shehbaz presses West to be ‘fair’ to needy countries

• Says Pakistan offered loans, not aid, while billions spent defending other nations
• Meets French president, Saudi crown prince and UN chief on sidelines
• Briefs IMF chief on country’s economic outlook, hopes for loan deal soon

ISLAMABAD: Developed countries should distribute resources fairly to help mitigate the suffering of developing nations and ensure world peace, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told a gathering of some 40 world leaders in Paris on Thursday, at a summit aimed at charting a fresh approach to tackling poverty and climate change.

The two-day New Global Financial Pact Summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron, seeks to improve the lending system for developing countries.

It comes amid growing recognition of the scale of the financial challenges ahead, with warnings that the world’s ability to curb global warming at tolerable levels relies on a massive increase in clean energy investment in developing nations.

Before the summit, PM Shehbaz met several world leaders and heads of the United Nations and International Monetary Fund (IMF) and highlighted the challenges faced by developing nations, particularly because of climate change.

During his speech at the event, the premier stressed the need for a fair and equitable formula for the distribution of financial resources in the world. He decried the response of international institutions to Pakistan’s appeals for funds after floods in 2022, saying that it was offered loans whereas billions were being spent on the defence of “a country or countries”.

“Of course, we are very grateful to our friendly countries across the globe for their valuable and timely contribution, but largely, the cash amount had to be generated from our own resources,” he said.

“And when we approached international institutions, they said, ‘Well, we can give you loans.’”

His speech was excellent and praiseworthy.

The Sharifs and AZ have billions of stolen wealth in Off shore accounts, do you think that everyone is simple as you guys and doesnt realise that. Surely, they could bring their billions back and pay back into the treasury and then talk to others.

Why should Shehbaz transfer his hard earned cash into the national treasury?

Because if he has earned it, it is most likely illegal earnings just because PTI supporters lead by Imran Khan’s hate for the PDM said so

Are you on about the TTs that he faced life jail for and Bajwa saved him with his coup. And whats worse is that Dr Rizwan was murdered to save him and so was Maqsood Chaprasi. Its the same with officer that arrested Ayan Ali, he was killed because AZs bit on the side was caught with 1/2mn in her suitcase. Arent you ashamed that these criminals are killing people to save their bacon? Do you not have any ghairat or humanity.

Well there is a way around that, its called tax returns. IK went back nearly 50 years, showed every receipt, NS brought a supermarket bag with him and told us that all was in there, but in his court case, his lawyer said that was just a political statement, he had an empty bag. Tell us with a straight face which of these is true? Did he lie or his lawyer lied? Where did the millions for the Flats come from, Nani told us she had no property in PK, never mind London? She lied , she had both. I know facts are not your thing but any guy with any ghairat would put up or shut up.

My expectations was that the Sharifs will do their thing and destroy Pakistan and they have done exactly that, and continue to do so with every living breath.

I know them and their kind well. They have no faith in anything which is good for Pakistan.

Indus Motor Company (IMC), the assembler of Toyota vehicles in Pakistan, has once again decided to shut production citing raw material and component shortages. This time production will be suspended from June 26 to June 27.

The automaker shared the development in a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday.

The automaker said that the company and its vendors continue to face hurdles on import of raw materials and receiving clearance of their consignments, on account of challenges in opening of Letters of Credit (LCs) and supply issues by certain foreign vendors.

“This has disrupted the supply chain of the company and the vendors are unable to supply raw materials and components to the company. Accordingly, the company has insufficient inventory levels to maintain production, therefore the company is unable to continue its production activities,” it said.

“In view of the above, the company has decided to completely shut down its production plant from 26 June 2023 to 27 June 2023 (both days inclusive),” it added.

This is Indus Motor’s fifth announcement of production closure this year. Earlier, the company announced a complete shutdown of its plant from June 3 to June 8, May 2 to May 3, February 1 to February 14, and then again from March 24 to March 27 citing inventory shortage.

Auto sector woes

The country’s auto sector, hugely dependent on imports, has been hit hard by the government’s decision to curb imports and restrict issuance of LCs. Additionally, higher finance cost and massive increase in car prices have also reduced demand from consumers.

IMC reported a profit-after-tax (PAT) of Rs3.216 billion for the third quarter of financial year 2022-23, a decrease of 37% as compared with earnings of Rs5.118 billion in the same period of the previous year.

On a quarterly basis, the PAT of Indus Motor was up by 142%.

KARACHI: Railing against former prime minister Imran Khan for running a hybrid regime, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has admitted that even his government could not run without support from the military.

In an interview with Geo News broadcast on Thursday, when anchor Hamid Mir pointed out that Pakistan was among the most prominent examples of hybrid regimes in the world today, PM Shehbaz said that Mr Khan had relied heavily on the former army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa.

“Mr Khan also received military support during his tenure. His government was a blend of various components, despite his accusations against others for the same. Every government requires backing from key sectors, including the military,” he said.

Earlier, in a separate interview with journalist Ammar Masood, PM Shehbaz reacted to the publication of the purported text of a diplomatic cable describing a meeting between Pakistan’s former US envoy and a senior State Department official.

Regarding the publication of the purported text of the diplomatic cipher, the premier said: “If the contents of the message are published in an international newspaper and prove to be true, it would indeed be a ‘massive crime’.”
