India is scheduled to play 17 tests from July to March all in subcontinental conditions.(4 in Westindies)

Virat already a ODI legend and proved himself a t20 maestro in the last season. So it brings to the test format where he still yet to prove his worth and well behind his contemporaries (Kane,Root,Smith) but it can change now atleast statistically. Virat can rake up close to 1200 runs in the next 17 tests with atleast 8 100s will take him to around 4200 runs with 19-20 test 1000s of 58 test matches which is pretty decent. Coming to his captaincy i expect him to win every series and winning 12-13 tests of out 17 will be really good.If india lose any series he can receive serious criticism.

I was going to make a thread about his captaincy but this is perfect thread

On his batting- by the end of these 17 test matches I expect him to have his average over 50 and for him to get at least 1 century in all the series. I don't think that is too much to ask from Virat.

On his captaincy- needs to ensure he gets selection right. He seems a much more aggressive captain than Dhoni was. So I believe in the long run India will win much more games than they will lose because of this. He seems to use the fast bowlers in an attacking way unlike dhoni, and his usage of ashwin in the test format has been brilliant. That will be an important factor in these upcoming test for India. If India are still number 1 after these series that would be a magnificent achievement. If India can have a long period of number 1 ranking in test format, for me kohli would have surpassed Dhoni as a test captain.

Batting - Take his average above 50
Captaincy - Win every single series . Have a settled team before we start touring overseas again .

50 above test average is given on top of that i expect him to score a 200

another interesting thing, Virat will be coming up against his contemporaries in the next series vs Kane vs Smith (both as a player and captain) and also against joe root in a 5 test encounter.

Yes should be fascinating comparing there captaincy skills.

Will win every series, no thanks to Kohli the Captain, but thanks to Asian pitches and bowlers. In Test, even Vijay is better than Kohli.

So as a captain, he will achieve false appreciations because his team will be winning, and as a batsman, it's golden opportunity for him to boost his average.

This will be a historic season for Cricket. We are about to witness the rise of something serious here. :kohli

the test season is coming at the right tim he is in form of his life in the LOI can he translate it to the tests? if he can he can rake up some serious numbers even higher than 1200 tests runs. Given his passion for 100s he can easily rake up 3 test 100s in a series. Finger crossed.

big teams are touring for sure, but conditions ll make every series 80-20 in favour of India.
Just like England is expected to win both SL & Pak series easily, it ll b same for India, it ll b shame if India dont win all the series

Can see India winning at least one game in both series.

Every time we come back from these overseas tours, there is such optimism.

But somehow we struggle to close games when we are on top but when we lose, we get carted.

Let's see what Kohli can do for those tours.

In England, there's always a chance to sneak a win on a greentop.

Australia, unless half their players get injured and we unearth our own Curtly Ambrose, zero chance. Zero.

I agree with this. On those pitches against those batsmen who are flat track specialists, you need a seriously strong pace attack which India does not have. Plus I doubt Ashwin will be successful in Australia. Indias batsmen will do really well in Australia though. I can also see them sneak a win in England.

It is not going to be that easy as people are making out to be. Indian test batting is hugely overrated. Except for Vijay, Kohli and Rahane, the rest of the batting is just lottery. The bowling will be fine with Jadeja, Mishra and Ashwin at home. So the pressure on Kohli to contribute with the bat will be enormous. He would hope for the rest of the batting to stand up and contribute at least at home.

Indeed you won a game on your last tour of England. In australia it is difficult you have the batting but not the bowling hopefully kohli capatincy can work in your favour

Sometimes you go a bit defensive with Kohli he will always be attacking. Also your bowling isn't that great for overseas tours.

Our pacers are not penetrative.

That's the biggest issue.

Need to build up a potent pace attack who can bowl a whole series without losing it.

Not many expectations. We might lose to England, which is clearly the best test team out there. We might lose 1-2 or draw 2-2.

We will win against Australia and New Zealand very easily.

Against Bangladesh - LOL.

Coming to his batting, I expect him to hit at least 5 centuries in the coming 17 tests. Batting won't be as easy on turning pitches, so it will be an achievement in itself.

It isn't going to be as simple as most people seems to think here, won't be cake walk for india nor for kohli, my predictions are, vs WI, india to win 2-1, vs Eng 3-1, vs Nz india to lose 1-2, vs Aus india to win 2-1, so overall india win 3 out of 4 series, india to win 8, lose 5 and draw 3 tests, overall these 4 series will be lot closer than most people think and even though india will win almost all 4 series but marging of victory won't be as big, and kohli the batsman will score around 1200 runs and score around 4 or 5 centuries, good performance but not great.

Not much can change without having any bowlers

He can score close to 3000 runs in 34 innings and win at least 15 test matches with 1 loss and 1 draw.

That's what VIRAT KOHLI IS ALL ABOUT. A CHAMPION AND GREAT CRICKETER. I am so glad that I am seeing him bat in this era.

lovely words where will india unearth their curtly ambrose maybe ishant sharma? too far fetched. India's batting always did well in Australia so expect Kohli and Co to score big numbers there i dont see india winning a series overseas (SAF NZL ENG AUS) for a long long time

3000? thats too much these wont batting friendly pitches more assistance for the spinners so 1200-1300 will be a job well done

India should have no problem dealing with Moen Ali, if our batsmen who Indian posters consider to be weaker than Indian batsmen they should be able to take him apart too.

We don't have players like younis or misbah who can play spin well.

I think he will score about 1000-1100 runs and win all series except the Eng one which will be a draw. Indian pitches aren't as good for batting as they used to be, a lot of turning pitches make it difficult to score many runs.

India will definitely do better as players are more experienced and mature now. A lot will depend on Rahane and Kohli.

I feel that India is missing a batsman like Asad Shafiq in the lower middle order who can score some useful runs. Rohit has been extremely disappointing so far in tests.

Need to replace Dhawan ASAP. He is way too inconsistent.

Kohli as a player will do well. However, I think Rahane will stay the best test batsman for India.

This series will be played in India so if Jadeja can spin the ball here then anyone can.
Jadeja was deadly in the home series against Australia too but Lyon couldn't extract much turn. Its not only due to the pitches, Jaddu has always been effective at home.

Jadeja has always been effective in useful conditions. Uae was favourable conditions and Moen was carted all around the ground. Your batting line up should have no problems with him this time round

Now is the time for Kohli to shine in tests.. He performed exceptionally well in Australia (don't say flat pitches coz pitches were same for every batsman) now he has to take his game to the next level like he has done on LOI's.. I'm sure he had been working really hard on his technique and hopefully the results will show in next 17 months..

As for captaincy we should win all the series.. If we lose even a single series then it's a failure..

If he fails to perform in next 17 months his legacy would not be in Lara Tendulkar league then but if he performs like we all know he can then people will already start saying he has surpassed tendu and Lara.. So it's upto him to do his best..

Also wanted to add this is really important 17 months for a lot of players especially Pujara for all the hype and technique and temperament he has he needs to convert it into runs..

Rahane has been in good form and hopefully he continues his form.. Same with vijay..
Dhawan is on his last chances hopefully he does well else will have to start looking for a replacement.. Rohit Sharma I don't know what to say about him if he is in starting 11 then should make use of it else he should be dropped from tests..

Moen is not a massive spinner of the ball. Kohli and vijay should tuck into him nicely

Indeed he isn't, but he is damn dangerous. I hope Indian batsmen remember what he did to them.

And also Indian pitches will give more turn as compared to England pitches. Moeen should not be taken lightly.

UAE he had favourable conditions but still struggled he doesn't think enough like a bowler and doesn't change his pace enough. He shouldn't be taken lightly of course, Indian batsmen should wait for his inevitable bad balls and punish him.

As a captain - win all 4 series and target to win at least 12-13 tests. Will give us a comfortable position as Test number 1 team. It is achievable but will be very tough especially playing 5 tests vs Eng.

As a batsman - at least 5 100s, 1200+ test runs and take his overall test average closer to 50.

If MS couldnt make India win a series overseas...no one can. Definitely not Kohli whom I dnt consider captaincy meterial at all. With bowlers we have...no captain can do anything. You can guide donkeys to the river but cant teach them to drink water.

Even in the upcoming home tests, I think we will loose againt Eng and NZ. We will thrash Aussies though as they are rubbish away from home. Bangladesh with Mustafiz on board will also give tough fight.

As far Kohli's batting is comcerned, not sure he has the test batting mindset yet. Plays too many rash shots. Pujara and Vijay will be our mainstay batsman.

Dhoni post 2011 was the worst defensive captain we gave ever had. Or rather put it this way the moment he lost Zaheer, his real bowlibg coach after 2011 WI Tour, his captaincy was exposed. Post that only series he won were on square turners. On decent wickets, he always came across as clueless and made the team.look worse than it actually was. Thank god he's long retired from tests.

So, you don't rate Misbah, then?

very funny how people are going overboard here .my prediction are following india to loose 2-1 to wi ,1-1 draw against nz ,3-0 win against aus and 3-1 loss to eng .so i think india will win 1 series loose 2 and draw 1 out of next 4 series that too after doctoring the pitches to shameful extent

But he is def on his way to win 15 test matches for India. What's the record for the most wins by Indian Captain?

I have a feeling India might go undefeated on this historical Indian Winter.

I can sense and smell Kohli scoring atleast one 300 score and three 200 score.

Expecting a couple of double centuries

Avg of 55+

series victory everywhere along with a couple of whitewashes.

Proving to Smith and Williamson that they are not good enough to survive in Indian coditions

End up the career of Cook and we get to see Root as the England captain

Make sure that Amla and De Villiers stay with their legacy as choker till both lock horns again in CT next year

Some here are really understating our chances against India.

We all saw how the two teams went the last time they played on a pitch that turned.

India were humiliated and beaten in all facets.

I'm not saying we're going to win the series, but from what we showed in India and in the UAE, we're more than easy beats.

Williamson will do well in India I feel. Also don't rule smith out he's a gutsy player wouldn't be surprised to see him get a century or 2

He struggled a bit against spinners in IPL and was made to go out of his comfort zone. However, test is a completely different game altogether and he can do well there. Smith if he gets a bit easier condition he can go on and hit big centuries any time.

Williamson is also as gutsy or even more as Smith is.

Yes brother, Wen u r against Karn Sharma, any1 can win in a spin wicket

Face Ashwin, Mishra and Jadeja in a spinning wicket is complete different story altogether for any1

Virat as a captain will win most of the test matches.

Virat as a batsman depends solely on the pitches

Some comments here seem a bit OTT... it's almost as though the results are already available and all that's left to decide is how high can he get his average after these series. :srt

The test batting line up will have Vijay, Pujara and Rahane - 3 better players of spin than Rohit, Raina and Yuvraj.
Plus Ashwin, Mishra and Jadeja are far more potent in tests at home than in shorter formats.

Bring it on

In test he won't need to attack the spinners he can just play the waiting game. Yes true but smith at times can look ugly but still find a way of scoring runs

Actually the India tour will be a big test for every Aussie batsmen and not just Smith. Its hard to think of any1 scoring runs there. This Aussie team isn't that good away from home especially in English and Indian conditions.

Yes Khwaja Burns and Voges will need to prove they can score outside of Australia. They did well to win in New Zealand but winning in subcontinent regularly is the target for them.

I hope Kohli hits atleast 8 100s in these 17 tests as a player. As a captain, he needs to win all these 5 series. We have always done well against Australia at home. Time to beat England and take revenge of last series and need to improve our record against New Zealand. Also in West Indies, we need to win. No excuses for a lost or even drawn series there

Everyone is getting destroyed in India. Due to the culture of considering seam, swing and pace over spin, batsmen are unable to play spin and their ability to play seam and swing hasn't really gotten better either.

Maybe a draw or two or a win if India is caught off guard. But series win?

I know this post can go wrong but honestly apart from Pakistan, I don't see anyone coming close to a series win in India.

Virat will score a minimum of 300 runs in the remaining 5 innings.

If he is required to bat that many, that is :smith
