Doing chartered accountancy, not the best decision I have made in life. Was born a software engineer but due to the legendary word, "scope" I joined CA. Boring stuff :(

Artificial scope by manipulating supply and creating obstacles for other bodies like ACCA.

Artificial scope by manipulating supply and creating obstacles for other bodies like ACCA.

They do create hurdles for other bodies but I do understand ICAPs point of view. Other bodies are so lenient that they just want to get students and have made everything so easy. I have seen their exam papers and I swear its not like the examiner is not even trying to pose any difficulty for the students. And their training requirements asks them to do any job which will count as valid whereas Im about to slave away the next 3 and a half years in an audit firm where you go at 8 in the morning and return at 11 in the night. Absolute torture and slavery to be honest but that shows in the quality in the end.

Student, studying Computer Science.
Hoping to either become a software engineer or work in artificial intelligence.

Sr. Project Manager @ Husky Energy in Canada :)

Hi Ahmedzee,

I was going through the " what do you do for living" thread and I came across your post. I am currently a Sophmore studying Environmental Science/ Sustainable Development at a top 20 ranked University in U.S.A. I am interested in working at an Energy Company hopefully in US or Canada( better international employment laws) and I wanted some information and advice as to what my next steps should be to go in the industry , what major is in demand etc.

If you have some minutes please write back.

Regards

Hey IS
Well that is a very good area of study (Environmental Science / Sustainable Development). Due to the Paris accord, and Canadian Govt of Liberals pursuance on sustainable energy development, oil & gas companies all over canada are going through a study to reduce the GH emissions. As a result, a lot of incentives are given to them by the Canadian Govt for that. Hence why I think your field of study is very important, not only in Oil & Gas sector, but in Power Generation as well.

By the time you graduate, there will be a lot more incentives for companies to hire from your area of study. I don't know about US (since Trump is a little reluctant to proceed with Paris accord). But in Canada, they are trying their best to be just like the Scandinavians and go for alternate energy options. Your next step is to get a 3.0 GPA from your university and keep applying for summer jobs/co-op terms. With co-op terms you can get wide variety of experience even before you graduate. Inshallah by then, you would have a clear understanding of what you want to do and where you want to go.

Anyone work in professional services/consulting for the Big 4/Accenture/McKinsey/BCG/Bain?

I work as a Pediatrician (child specialist) in Houston. For now, I only take care of kids in the hospital and don't do any clinic work. I work with a lot with students and other physicians in training. Surprised to see such a small % of medical folks in a predominantly Desi forum!

Stop it :/

No, seriously, for years I've been pondering over the mystery of why that remark touched a raw nerve. I remember it like it was yesterday. I disparaged vets, homeopaths and hakeems.

Oh come on.Putting Vets in the same sentence as hakims of all people , like seriously ?? Did anyone of them accidentally killed your cat or smth?
Oh you know very well why I got offended. It's a derogatory word mostly used by paindoos in rural Punjab and nearby areas to address a Vet.
I wonder what we ever did to them to warrant such a reputation?

I knew the term was offensive. I just never knew, before today, that you were a vet, which is why your being offended makes sense now.

For the record, no vet ever hurt my cat. If anything, the cat terrifies me because I suspect it may really be a Jinn, but that's a discussion for that other thread.

Why all the hate though? I heard they charge quite exorbitant price in the states :afridi

The exorbitant prices may explain the hate.

I never take my cat to the vet though. She frolics on the hill outside, killing mice, chasing birds, and may actually revert to the wild soon. The cat that is, not the vet.

Sounds like a fun person sorry cat.
Does she also post on forums?

Its 2:46 AM here.
I'd rather not .

Fear not, the witching hour has passed, and dawn isn't too far away. Those creaks you hear are not footsteps, they are just the normal expansion and contraction of the frame of the house.

That is not a cat meowing outside the door. It is just your imagination getting the better of you...

I'm going into policing!

The questions they ask you on the exam are beyond everyone's imagination here. I'd get banned if I provided some examples. :))

That's cool, it's something I've sort of want to do as well but you know how desi family's work:yk

Being a cop can be pretty scary though, you'll see some crazy sh*t.

Power systems engineer. Quite the career transformation considering I started off in the telecom sector, worked with renewable energy in between, and have been working in the power sector for a while now.
