You can get medical advice from pharmacists as well

currently iv done 4yrs at medical school in birmingham. however i took a year out and im thinking about quitting altogether. i did it for my parents and i cant stand medicine to an extent i think about how much i hate it 24 7. im thinking very hard about what step to take next. ie do the one year or quit etc..

what advice would you guys give??

You've done extremely well, considering how much you hate it. Have you talked to your parents about how much you don't like it, you never know, they might surprise you!

Have you thought about what you might like to do instead?

I was going to say that you have to think about what's most important to you, keeping your parents happy or your happiness but maybe there's a compromise??

thats the thing. iv wasted 4 yrs. my parents know i dont wana do it but its all about family pride. when i wanted to tke a gap yr, this is what my dad said to me:

" puter dont think after a year you can say abba iv got no heart left in medicine". so from that comment he knows i hate it.

im just thinking what to do next. if i do quit then i probably do another course, business related. the worst part is all the family members ie uncles etc.. call me dr saab :( :6:

Its annoying how 'what other ppl will say/think' matters so much to some asian ppl.

I guess you finishing the degree but not practising would not be enough?

Think about this, how will you feel (towards your dad and generally) if you do finish your degree and work as doctor, then think about how you'll feel if you do business or something else you want to do.

I think you might have the option of returning to medicine later on if you do 'quit'?? (If you quit but then decide it would be better to have carried on with it after all)

Does any of that make sense?

not really :))) thanks for trying though. the worse thing is, my dad calls me selfish etc... and that vexxes me the most lol considering im doing this for them. etc..

i dont understand what it is with asian parents too, i never did what they wanted me to do, i decided to go into computer science coz i enjoy it and i never got support from them the 3 yrs of my time at uni i provided for my self and when i did graduate i never got congratulated or even a hug i was promised to be taken out for an evening with the family but that was just to make me happy we never did go everyone 'forgot' and now my younger sis will be going to uni this year inshallah and shes doing law and they are so happy about it they tell everyone about it

i dont feel jealous or anything but its like they dont care what degree i did, and now ive applied for jobs in UAE and have had responses back my dad has allowed me to work there if i want but my mum has warned me but if it was my sister she would say yes

Me neither, we have to make sure our generation 'breaks the chain'!

I wanted to do journalism but decided not to go against my parents wishes, guess I'm not as courageous as you 2!

well im just finishing up my 4th year - has been a killer year, looking forward to summer to recouperate, but 1 year isnt long bhai, u could finish it off and then atleast u will have a safety net - then go into another field if u choose - post grad courses in something else would be easy for u

Hasbeen my friend

finish your degree, you should not take any steps that will ruin the relation with you and your father - its not worth it :)

the thought of hurting ur dad will eat u up, am sure u know how that feels so dun go at war with urself, finish ur degree, do something u like later and try to liek ur field as well, never know u ight be successful in many ways...

DO IT - Dont give up! DOnt let urself or ur dad down at this point. Dont give any chance to a situuation in which ur relation with dad might be ruined - its not WORTH it.

finish the year and then think about it. Too much time and effort has been spent already so don't waste it. Are you over qualified to be a Hakeem?

That Kinda sucks, well parents should be proud of thier kids as long as the education is professional and respected which in your case it is a highhly respeected profession,

I love engineering but I have more passion for Business and Economics and Politics, I was thinking I would become an Economist and then political science but mom and dad would never approve :( and especially when my whole dad's side since 3 generations is lined up with engineers, doesnt help me either but thankfully i like engineering

yet i spend my time talking about business and politics

lets see wat the future holds..!

a while ago Business was for students who couldn't cut it (or failures :) ) I don't know how true it is now

That's the usual trend in my engineering department

they fail in engineering and then go to business, mostly MBA - easy peasy but commerce and further studying is more challenging i would say but not close to engineering !

Zechariah - I was talking about how it was in Pakistan. Girls ... medicine, and Boys medicine or Engineers. Failures or lazy go to business. Maybe that was because these were the two fields you were sure to get a decent job or maybe the titles doctor/engineer was more impressive. I am sure it has changed by now generally speaking as there have always been kids going to business major and doing good before.

but what do you do? do you know?

lol yes I do happen to know what I do.

I manage IT projects of various scale and with different clients. Project management involves overseeing all aspects of a project life cycle from initial planning to actual implementation and all that goes in between. I have a couple of people that report to me and I give them tasks of what to do, and I manage the communication with the clients as far as timelines, etc.

It's a hectic job but I like it. I can elaborate more if anyone is interested but I dont wanna bore the rest of the world, haha. If your interested, feel free to ask.

dude, go on with your parents wishes. Believe me, there will be so bigger a prize that you cant imagine, just in obeying their wishes.

and may be you start liking medicine. Choices n preferences keep on changing.

lets see...............No professional cricketer here.....just rookies

lol i realise that you strongly, sincerely, unequivocally, from the bottom of your heart detest medicine, but i feel that since you've come 80% of the way, its worth completing that extra 20%. And its just a matter of one more year, next thing you know you'll have graduated.

The benefits of doing the extra year to get your degree outweigh the disadvantages. By doing that degree, you will be a lot more stable, and always have comething to fall back on incase something happens later on in life (inshAllah it wont) but just incase.

After you complete your medicine degree and you're damn sure you dont want to be a doc, you can always do an MBA and go into pharmaceutical companies. Considering you have and M.D. plus an MBA, you'll get a very decent job quite quickly.

So yeah my advice is complete it, then you can do watever, Heck you can even go into research, the possibilities are endless. :19:

Can you get into those professions with a medicine degree? I'm pretty sure you need to do a degree in dentistry to get further dental-type
qualifications before you can use the title 'dr'.

The thing is you have invested a lot of time, energy and money on this. Just suffer for another year and then think. It is not that you are in the first year of medical school but it is the last year. Do not take a break as you might not go back in time and later regret it or if you do go back you have to play a bit of catch up which means more work. You have some momentum going with studying use it
