Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir has announced that he will return the award Bangladesh bestowed on his father for his contributions during the Liberation War.

He claimed the award was actually a "deception" by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government, who he blamed for straining ties with Pakistan.

Mir made the announcement during his show Capital Talk on Thursday.

In 2013, the Bangladesh government honoured 69 foreign nationals for supporting Bangladesh during the 1971 war with Pakistan.

Hamid's father Waris Mir and 12 other Pakistanis were among them.

"She (Hasina) wants to cut off all ties with Pakistan which means that award was a deception. I believe we should say thanks and return this deception to Hasina Wazed and that's what I will do," said Mir.

Late professor and journalist Waris Mir penned a series of reports in Urdu newspaper 'Daily Jang' on the atrocities carried out by Pakistani soldiers on Bengalis in the then East Pakistan on the night of Mar 25, 1971.

He had also visited Bangladesh with a group of students.

Hasina, daughter of the nation's founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, conferred the Friend of Bangladesh Liberation War award on Waris posthumously in 2013.
Mir, anchor of Pakistan's Geo News, had received the award on behalf of his father.
"Muslim League was established in Dhaka. So the relation between Bangladesh and Pakistan should be good," Mir said.

"We were approached in 2013 saying that Bangladesh wanted to award some of our elders with an eye on improving the bilateral relations. My father was one of them. Those who opposed the military raids by Pakistan on Bangladesh in 1971 were given the award."

The 13 Pakistani nationals accepted the invitation believing that Hasina will improve Pakistan-Bangladesh relations, he said.

"But I later saw that Hasina Wazed made relations worse instead of improving them. She will not even send the Bangladesh cricket team to Pakistan. Now it seems that the awards given to us were a deception."

Mir came to Dhaka to receive the award skipping a ceremony in Pakistan that conferred the highest civilian award on him for advocating freedom of press.

He had told Bangladeshi reporters then that Pakistan would also try 1971 war criminals some day.

Bangladesh's relations with Pakistan started to get frosty further last year when Pakistan broke diplomatic protocol and reacted to the execution of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders who had committed war crimes in 1971.

Bangladesh boycotted the 19th SAARC summit held in Islamabad in protest.

Many quarters have since urged Dhaka to seek damages from Islamabad and even suggested severing of all diplomatic ties.

But Hasina in last year's October brushed off the possibility of cutting diplomatic ties with the South Asian neighbour.

"Diplomatic relations will continue with Pakistan, so will the conflicts," she said.

He obviously has to keep his army masters happy.

I don't know why bengalis and indians even comment on Pakistani issues when they don't even know the background. Hamid Mir is one of the most anti military and anti establishment journalist of Pakistan and this is a weel known fact. To give you an idea ISI was blamed when there was an assassination attempt on Mir a few years ago and he almost lost his life because of multiple bullets. So next time when you supporters of murderers like Haseena and Modi accuse anyone do it with some research.

He obviously has to keep his army masters happy.

Are you for real? This is a principled action by someone with deep animosity towards the army who he believes, not without reason, was behind the attempt on his life a few years ago.

Well Mir sahab looks quite happy in receiving that reward from Haseena in that picture.

Whatever journalists like Mir do I take with a bucket of salt, these journalists get sold to the highest bidder at the drop of a hat.

More reasons why he should keep them happy.

Which Pakistani did Modi or Haseena murder?

I think he has been well exposed so has to return it back.

Renowned journalist Hamid Mir has bid farewell to the Geo/Jang Group after serving in the leading media organisation for almost two decades.

The journalist has reportedly joined an upcoming media outlet, Gourmet News Network (GNN), as its president.

In a picture making rounds over the internet, the host of one of the most popular current affairs show of the country – Geo News’ Capital Talk – can be seen standing in the GNN newsroom in Lahore. Taking to Twitter to share the picture, newscaster Salman Hassan wrote, “Welcome aboard sir jee. Mir sb joined as president of GNN.”

While all social networking sites are buzzing with the development, Hamid Mir is yet to confirm leaving the Jang group.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Hamid’s younger brother, Amir Mir, has joined GNN as its Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Hamid knows Geo/Jang is history. Even Sethi is in talk with ARY. But WTH man how many more news channels we need?

Come on a give us a HD Sports channel!

:)))

Gourmet News Network

Is this some kind of food channel?

Yaar Yeh gourmet wale Har jaga ghuss gaye hein? First Gourmet sweets then gourmet icecream then restaurant then furniture then water and now news shows. :))

Wait, wasn't GNN also where Ron Burgundy use to work?

Gourmet News Network :danish

First I misread it and thought it said Gorment

giphy.gif

I heard GNN is the same old CNBC Pakistan later turned in to Jaag News?

So Gourmet Bakery has launched a newz channel, hope it doesn’t end up like the initial Bol TV, when almost every single anchor joined Bol only to leave it again.

Pakistan only has like 1654686565 news channels.

A TV dinner to welcome you all to Naya Pakistan.

The name Sounds absolutely ridiculous but congrats to him. He's had a helluva career and one of the few on geo who managed to keep their reputation intact.

Speaking of Geo haven't presenters been complaining about not getting paid on time etc to the point even IK was lobbying on their behalf for proper payment. Hopefully it's finally collapsed and Mir Shakil ends up in front of a judge

Why does Pakistan need a billion news channel? TV channels in Pakistan are absolute garbage, even a traffic jam is a breaking news for them. The over sensationalization of news and constant repetitive discussions get too much. Specially how newcasters will keep repeating the same line over and over and over again. I can't believe how people watch that crap.

Lets see the news channels do a proper job of sending people in to field and look to report on education, health environment rather than just interviewing each other.

There are so many things to hate, but nothing beats news anchors repeating the same thing over and over again (literally) while yelling.

The only time I appreciated that was when Nawaz Sharif was na-ehled. That was fun.

This is an alien concept.

Many of the problems faced by PK are problems created by people who are appointed to pick up salaries but not actually work. Its the job of the media to expose the incompetent shirkers and keep the pressure on IK and the PTI to deal with them.

:))) at name

what is he going to hosting? a cooking show with politians.

...and yes Pakistan needs 1000s of news channel, because unlike every other country on this planet which have 1000s of entertainment channels and a few news channels, in Pakistan its the opposite, politics is the only entertainment we get here thanx to zia ul haq and our dramabaazi politians.

Bajwa going Yemen?

Hmm don't know how I feel about this. We need the money, but MBS is basically the devil.

Doing that would destroy our relations with Iran, and effectively have Pakistan truly surrounded by three hostile nations. We need the money, yes, but we also need to try and improve things in our own neighbourhood.

Agree completely. Would also totally go against everything Imran Khan has ever stood for.

If Imran Khan can delicately play this in a way he keeps both the Saudis and Iranians happy, and Pakistan is the winner, it'll be his greatest victory yet

Yes, and if we remove our political lenses, it is absolutely the wrong thing to do. Saudi Arabia are committing some of the worst human rights violations in Yemen, against totally powerless and defenceless people.

Iran does business with India, why should Pakistan care what Iran thinks. But I think Iranians are pragmatic enough to realise the desperate need for Pakistan to increase dollar cash reserves.

This is not the first time Saudis have helped out, in the 90s after American sanctions, they were secretly providing fuel on credit another guide for free. Guess who ratted... a Pakistani civil servant ran straight to Americans to tell them what what was going on....

Which civil servant?

a few months back I heard that IK will win the elections the money will be recovered from Nawaz but the money would be channeled through Saudia but the deal with would KSA would be that NS name will not be mentioned and it will be a reported as a soft loan from Saudis for resolving Pakistan balance of payment crisis after some time Nawaz would be givin a passage out of Pakistan and asked never to return

Now all this is perhaps no true and I treated is as one of those 100 rumors and news you hear daily but I can't help but think about it when I read this.

Not sure how I feel about this. Nobody gives anything for free and specially not 8-10 billion dollars. The Saudis will definitely demand something in return.

No it is actually the right thing to do. I am no MBS fan but we have been a staunch Saudi ally since 1947. They have helped us in some very dire times and we have in turn helped them in some weird and wonderful times. They have protected us in international forums from some pretty harsh behind the scenes shenanigans. Qatar is now not very pro Pakistan and Saudi have seen a chink in that armour. They also understand our limitations with regards to iran but they also know we will never openly side with Iran, especially since the yadav fiasco and Irans continued insistance of playing games with regards to india.

we need 9 billion dollars for foreing reserve backup and to avoid a IMF tranch. We will also probably boost our troop levels in Saudi without getting too involved in Yemen. Saudi knows that we are a staunch backup in case the iranians ever think about building the bomb. Within twenty four hours they will have a ready device to counter anything from Iran.

The iranians know this too. This is also linked to Afghanistan and the Belt and road initiative which is increasingly looking like something the Saudis may invest in. They are playing a triple game. They want to keep Pakistan from collapsing as they then lose a major ally that borders Iran, they also want to see if they can get some strategic value from CPEC and at the same time hiinder Iran in afghanistan and south asia.

So you're telling me that it's morally the right thing to join Saudi Arabia in bombing innocent people in Yemen?

So you're telling me that it's morally the right thing to join Saudi Arabia in bombing innocent people in Yemen?

International relations are not about morality. Morally it is a disgrace but we need to survive and be diplomatic..

Doing that would destroy our relations with Iran, and effectively have Pakistan truly surrounded by three hostile nations. We need the money, yes, but we also need to try and improve things in our own neighbourhood.

We should accept a loan from Iran as well just to show that we are not going to indulge any partisan sectarian nonsense.

Not sure how I feel about this. Nobody gives anything for free and specially not 8-10 billion dollars. The Saudis will definitely demand something in return.

It's not free. It's a loan.

IK does not have a magic wand to make everything better overnight. It's gonna take time.

Iran is no position to give out loans after the US imposed sanctions.

Seems to have enough money for wars outside its borders...

The fact is, they will not do you any favours even if there were no sanctions. They will want to drive a hard bargain. You wouldn't think that would not be the case, considering pakistan has highest number of Shias after Iran. But their own interests come first.

Case in point, they were fast tracking freezing out pakistan vis a vis trade to afghans and Central Asia through chabahar, worse of all by cooperating with India. This point should never be lost on any Pakistani.

As long as we remain dependent on these countries, we will remain as pawns in a bigger game.

Well then Pakistanis should get off their behinds and get to work. Why is it that 220 million Pakistanis export 20 billion a year, while less than 5 million overseas Pakistanis, off which I'd say only about 30% send remittances back home, are able to send the same amount every year?

Considering that an average Pakistani has to survive on his wits and hardwork and not on Student Loans, Jobseeker allowances or shady benefits, I’d say that it’s fairly incorrect to imply that Pakistanis are any less hardworking than the overseas Pakistanis.

Not sure what you mean. All the government employees pay their taxes. They get their salaries with the tax amount already deducted.

Sharif family, PPP's leaders contacting PM Imran for pardon : Hamid Mir

ISLAMABAD: Renowned journalist and anchor Hamid Mir here on Thursday revealed that Sharif family and leaders of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) were contacting Prime Minister Imran Khan to seek pardon for their leadership, ARY News reported.

Responding to a question in ARY News’ talk show ’11th hour’ Hamid Mir said that non-political family members of Sharif family approached PM Imran Khan and conveyed a message of mercy for the family. He further said that PPP’s leadership was also making efforts to get pardon.

Hamid Mir said,” PM Imran and his government have no threat from PML-N and PPP.” He said that both the major political parties are not playing the real role of opposition in the country.”

Talking about the recent barbs and tension in the National Assembly between PPP and PTI, Hamid Mir termed it political show and added that PPP also sought NRO from the current government.

Responding to another question about the fate of Sharif family, Hamid Mir said that it seemed that Sharif could not get any relax or exemption from the court this time hence they were contacting the prime minister for NRO.

Musharraf did it and we saw the disaster that followed. These so called competent corrupt goons/killers should be punished severely.

A plea bargain, a public admission of guilt and a return of all the looted wealth is the bare minimum

Hamid is desperate for the losers to come on the street but they have no support otherwise they would have done so. They should Pay $10bn each and leave PK then we can do a deal

Musharraf did it and we saw the disaster that followed. These so called competent corrupt goons/killers should be punished severely.

Musharraf did it when he was weak. The AQ Khan nuclear tech sales scandal had just broken and BB seemed willing to put up AQ for questioning. No such pressure on the government right now.

Musharraf admits the NRO was his biggest mistake which is responsible for all of the Loot Maar that occurred in the next 10 years. He blames the PML Q politicians i.e. Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Pervez Elahi at the time for putting pressure on him to grant the NRO. He also mentions at the time out of the 10-11 cases against the Bhutto's and Zardari's, they have gotten exonerated in 8-9 of the cases and were close to getting exonerated in the remaining cases which were going no where and therefore out of the remaining 4 options i.e. to remove uniform, to remove 58-2(b), to remove the restriction on 3rd time prime minister and to remove all corruption cases, it was the most practical choice at the time.

I believe Musharraf in his extremely short term desperation to hold on to power, hurt Pakistan really badly in the long run. He should have punished and burried these crooks when he had the golden once in a lifetime opportunity.

He underplays the international pressure on him. BB signed the NRO and reneged on the deal and came to Pakistan. He was powerless to stop her until of course her tragic demise

From what i understand PMLN and PPP are going to hire JUID madrassa students to come on street for them and Fazlu already assured them that he will give them 1 million madrassa students.

Hamid Mir show taken off air; PEMRA says not responsible

–Hamid Mir expresses dismay, says ‘not living in a free country’

An interview of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari conducted by senior journalist and anchorperson Hamid Mir was taken off air within a few minutes of broadcasting on Geo News Monday evening, leaving many to question the freedom of the press in Pakistan.

Freedom of press? Zardari is out on production order to attend assembly sessions not to give interviews. Our laws are a big joke specially these production orders for MNA/MPA

Klasra taking the hypocrite Mir to task.

Not just him but also a few others from the Media did it as well and it's great to see there are sane voices still left in our media. Just imagine how much strong narrative PTI govt can build by throwing a few billions on the name of ads to channels and few known lifafas (the way PMLN did).

ISLAMABAD: Not only the media persons and journalists’ bodies but also a number of cabinet members have criticised the directive issued by Pemra to restrict the appearance of television anchors in current affairs programmes.

But after criticism from all sides, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, said the regulator had issued the directive in the light of a court decision.

“Anchors have not been stopped from expressing their views. They have their exclusive shows to discuss anything and everything. The advisory is a reiteration of the existing code of conduct on court orders which needs to be taken care of to avoid conjecture,” Dr Awan said on her official twitter account, @Dr_FirdousPTI.

The Pemra order, titled “Directive — Discussion and Analysis on sub-judice matter”, has stirred a controversy even in official circles and two federal ministers, Dr Shireen Mazari and Fawad Hussain, as well as former finance minister Asad Umar have opposed the move.

Mr Umar said in a tweet: “Amazing decision by Pemra to stop anchors to go on any other talk show and express their opinion! Pemra should be doing a better job taking action against completely fake news and not suppressing the right of individuals, including anchors, to express their opinion.”

Dr Shireen Mazari made an even more sarcastic comment in her tweet, asking Pemra to define who should be called an expert in political affairs.

“Who is an ‘expert’? An interesting unintended debate has been generated - so purely at an academic non-political level: Do I need a degree in politics to be an expert on politics? I have no degree in human rights so should I go on TV to discuss human rights issues?” she asked.

Dr Mazari’s second tweet said: “Do I need a degree in IR/Strategic Studies to discuss foreign/or defence policy? What degree do I need to talk about Information? Is expertise defined by a degree? Finally we have a debate at an abstract level media should focus on! But what experts would be needed for such a debate on TV?”

Her views were acknowledged by former information minister Fawad Chaudhary, who described the Pemra directive as “illogical, unnecessary and uncalled for”.

He tweeted that the Pemra notification to bar anchors from appearing on other shows was “uncalled for, illogical and unnecessary”.

Apart from politicians, high-ups in the print and electronic media too slammed Pemra’s move.

In a statement, the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) expressed concern over the move to bar TV anchors from appearing as analysts.

The statement by CPNE president Arif Nizami termed the decision a violation of fundamental rights.

He said Article 19 of the Constitution guaranteed freedom of expression; therefore it was unjustified to issue “such a notification in the Supreme Court’s name”.

The CPNE president urged the government not to use the media watchdog as a tool for curbing freedom and called upon Pemra to withdraw the notification.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Editors and News Directors Association called the directive unlawful. “Pemra’s order is unlawful, clearly exceeds its mandate and appears to be yet another attempt to stifle a free media in Pakistan,” the statement said. “The order must be withdrawn forthwith.”

It added that the order was not only against the norms of journalism but also an attempt to stop viewers from gaining valuable insights.

A statement issued by television anchors termed the Pemra directive a dictatorial step.

“The restrictions by Pemra on anchors and journalists barring them from attending each other’s talk shows are arbitrary, dictatorial and an infringement on the freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution.

“It is not Pemra’s jurisdiction to decide who should be a guest speaker, expert and commentator on television shows. The essence of this directive is that the state will decide who can speak and on what issue,” it added.

The statement further said: “We hold the Tehreek-i-Insaf government, led by Prime Minister Imran Khan, responsible. The elected government is constitutionally answerable for the acts of all institutions under the executive.”

The anchors even used threatening language. “We know how to fight. We have fought dictatorships for restoration of democracy and democratic values. We have fought against terrorism and extremism. Our colleagues have faced hardship, threats, harassment and joblessness.”

After coming under severe criticism, Pemra clarified late on Monday night that its directive had been misread.

“There is misinterpretation of Pemra advisory. By no means it was intended to restrict freedom of expression, as being projected by a few.”

The authority added that the advisory issued on Sunday was in line with the existing Pemra laws, the Electronic Media (Programmes & Advertisements) Code of Conduct, 2015, and advisories issued from time to time over the code of conduct about discussions on sub-judice matters.

“There is no advisory to ban participation of journalists in talk shows, there is no restriction on appearance of any number of anchors in marathon transmissions on a current issue on their channels while also taking other relevant guests where required,” the letter said.

“Pemra is fully supportive of freedom of expression as enshrined in the Constitution with a role to regulate it within the bounds of Pemra laws and code of conduct.”

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday reprimanded some federal ministers and senior leaders of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) for their statements against the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s (Pemra) recent move to bar television anchors from appearing as “experts” in their own and other channels.

Presiding over a meeting of the federal cabinet, the prime minister expressed resentment over tweets of Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry, Human Rights Minister Dr Shireen Mazari and MNA Asad Umar against the Perma move and warned them against criticising the government decisions ‘openly’.

“In fact Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan lodged a complaint with the prime minster that Fawad Chaudhry, Shireen Mazari and Asad Umar had given remarks through their tweets against the government’s decision,” a participant of the meeting told Dawn on condition of anonymity. He said the prime minister was of the view that the “government ministers should not have discussed such matters openly”.

At this, Fawad Chaudhry said to the prime minister that Pemra had not taken the decision in an appropriate manner, inviting criticism against the government.

The Pemra move has stirred controversy even in media and official circles.

In his tweet, Asad Umar had said: “Amazing decision by Pemra to stop anchors to go on any other talk show and express their opinion! Pemra should be doing a better job taking action against completely fake news and not suppressing the right of individuals, including anchors, to express their opinion.”

Shireen Mazari had tweeted: “Who is an “expert”? An interesting [and] unintended debate has been generated - so purely at an academic non-political level: Do I need a degree in politics to be an expert on politics? I have no degree in ‘human rights’ so should I go on TV to discuss ‘human rights’ issues?”

Fawad Chaudhry had described the Pemra directive as “illogical, unnecessary and uncalled for”.

High-rise buildings
The cabinet allowed four major cities of the country — Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Multan — to have 50-storey buildings.

“The cabinet allowed 500-foot-high buildings even in the funnel areas (15km radius) of airports in the four cities,” Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan told Dawn after the cabinet meeting.

He said that earlier there was a ban on construction of high-rises in 15km radius of the airports, but now it had been relaxed.

However, it was observed that despite the ban multi-storey buildings were being constructed in the funnel areas of airports.

The restriction had already been lifted in Islamabad.

At a post-cabinet meeting press conference, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said the prime minister had directed the authorities concerned to expedite the process of acquiring the assistance of foreign companies to run the country’s airports in a better way under the government’s policies and provide better facilities to the passengers, besides generating more revenue.

The cabinet was briefed on the progress in work on upgrade and reconstruction of Skardu airport. The meeting empowered minister for aviation to renew licences of airlines companies and expressed the hope that the decision would facilitate the companies and expedite the process of renewals.

National Executive Committee
The meeting approved the formation of the National Executive Committee headed by Minister for Economic Affairs Hammad Azhar and comprising directors general of the Military Operations and Inter-Services Intelligence. The committee will work to control terror financing and money laundering under the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010.

It is for the first time in the country’s history that the heads of two highly sensitive military organisations have been made members of any national body on money laundering and terror financing.

Dasu hydropower project
The cabinet approved the release of compensation amount for the land being acquired for the construction of the 4320MW Dasu hydropower project. The meeting was informed that the government was bearing a loss of Rs330 million daily due to delay in the construction of the project which was to be completed this year.

The cabinet also approved restructuring of the board of governors of Sui Southern Gas Company Limited and appointment of former State Bank governor Dr Shamshad Akhtar as its member. Similarly, new board of governors of the Pakistan Liquefied Natural Gas Limited was approved with Rahat Konain as its chairman.

The meeting also approved restructuring of the board of directors of the Government Holding Private Limited which will be headed by Aaila Majeed.

The cabinet was informed that a proposal was under consideration to reduce electricity tariff for domestic consumers during the current winter so that consumers could meet their energy demands. The present electricity production in the country is 31,000MW.

The meeting was told that weather studios were being set up in Lahore to closely monitor weather with special focus on smog which mainly comes from India in winter.

The cabinet approved appointment of members of the Adjudicating Authority under Benami Transaction Act-2017.
