Was scrolling through twitter and saw an article about British Asians and their accomplishments etc. and i’m seeing bare americans saying “these aren’t asians. They don’t look chinese or Japanese. These are arabs”

Do the yanks think Japanese and Chinese are the only Asians and that Indians and Pakistanis are not Asians?

They think Pakistanis are Arabs.

What are they teaching in America?

Good question.

In North America, Asian means Chinese/Japanese/Koreans. Desi people are called brown or Indians. Middle Eastern folks are called Arabs.

It is stupid but it is what it is.

In America most of the Asians are far from East Asia, so East Asians are the ones who are given label of "Asian". Lighter Skin Pakistanis are viewed as Latino or Middle Easter, while darker skin ones are seen as Indian.

On topic.

I definitely believe that Americans are more ignorant about global geography than Canadians are. Many Americans are so self-absorbed that they are completely clueless about outside world.

The outside world is whack so no reason to learn bout it! Simple as that 😆

I think it dates back to 1800s when influx of Chinese/Japanese immigrants came to America to build the railroad network. They were simply referred to as 'Asians' because hardly anyone else from Asia migrated to the US back then.

To my surprise many Asians (chinese and Koreans) in the US still dont speak good English despite being there for decades. They also live in their own ethnic enclaves where they ve their own korean church, korean supermarkets and korean dominated schools.

Not much different from us Desis (infact even to a greater extent).

We don't call ourselves Asians here, it means East Asian. We're usually just Brown or "middle eastern" or "east indian" in the eyes of regular Americans.

Same situation in many areas of Sydney

You described every immigrant community in the world

in North America they call east asians (chinese, koreans, japanese, phillipinos) as asians. The others they call them indians and arabs. I am Pakistani but people assume I'm middle eastern.

To add to this, for a long time and even today some places Indian in America usually meant Native American. Like growing up before I even knew about India the country I thought all Indians were just Native Americans, I had little exposure to desi culture.

I remember in elementary school, early/mid 2000s all the Indian kids would get asked by the white if they were native americans and if they ever used a bow and arrow lol. The whole "cowboys and indians" thing is quite popular here. I've had some white guys proudly tell me of their distant Native American heritage when they found out I was south asian despite no connection lol. Even in Spanish they refer to both Native Americans and East Indians as "Indios" so it can get confusing. I remember somebody from North Carolina telling me that when Nikki Haley who is of Punjabi descent was running for Governor many White people thought she was just white mixed with native American when she said she was Indian lol, it worked out for her. North Carolina is a really edcuated state home to the research triangle, so if people there are ignorant I can't expect much better elsewhere.

I was once in Sydney’s CBD 8-9 yrs ago and all I could see were chinese faces. Felt like i was in China.

Somehow East asians are even more inclined to stick to their own culture and communities. Even if they sometimes appear Western on surface, culturally they are very stuck to their own ways. Its also a difficult to get to know them for that reason.

Didn't know NC was into research up here in NY south is perceived as like this racist, white trash ghetto but I think know a days south is actually growing faster than northeastern states
I am tired of being cold and stuff I may move down south but my perception of south was that it's all part of the rust belt and genuinely felt it was a hellhole but would love to know your opinions on south

If you’re fair, you get mistaken for an Arab
If you’re a bit dark, you get mistaken for an Indian

The “Native American” misconception is forgivable as they’re probably not used to hearing about the other type of Indian as much but the Asian one is just pure idiocracy

But people say Muslims are the ones who don’t integrate.
Let’s leave terrorism aside for a second as it’s pretty uncommon in the UK still, i don’t see how Pakistanis are less integrated than any other group except us not going to parties or drinking.

All this talk about muslims wearing Burqaas, not shaking women’s hands, lowering you gaze etc. What percentage of muslim men/women actually do that?
Very few is the answer

It is actually baffles me. Is integration defined as whether you do or don’t drink Alcohol?

Huh? If geography teaches these then anthropology kis chidiya ka naam hain?

India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Srilanka are South Asians. We are distinct from the rest of the Asians.

It is not about geography. It is assumed in West that Asians means the Mongoloid people of China, Japan, Vietnam, Thai, Malaysia etc.

Not in the UK though.
Maybe because the South Asian population here is probably the highest (in terms of percentage) in the west

Here in USA, Asian means Mongoloid people. When you identify your race, I always have this confusion. I am not really Asian. Subcontinent people are mutts. We are a mix of Australoid + Caucasian + some Mongoloid.

If you own a convince store, motel - Indian
If you have a beard- Arab
If you are short brown and work construction-Latino
Have a Mullet and miss some teeth- Red Neck
Have a Chinese take away- Chinese
Black-Blacks
Bad teeth- British
Vegetarian- California
Rich - Yuppy

About 10 years ago I worked with a black lady. One day she came to be and said "did you see all these Russians in Atlanta?" I sad no why? She goes " I saw it on TV last night." Then I realized that she had heard in the news about Russians invading Georgia, the country, which she did not know existed. She just assumed it was in US state of Georgia and Atlanta is the biggest city in Georgia.

i know it sounds stupid and its seems you lying or something but I could definitely see it happening, there are some stupida## people up in here

many people think pakistanis and afghans are arabs

Interesting. Here my observations:

Arabs is an umbrella term. Saudis look more like egyptians (i.e halfway between persians & africans), people from Levant (Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon) look like southern europeans, Arabs from North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Libiya) look like a mixture of southern european and africans. Then you also have black arabs from Sudan, Chad etc

Pathans (incl. most Afghanis) basically look like Persians. Pakistanis have a mix of all above but most ppl can recognise us from somewhere in North India. Some time ppl get confused from our complexion and hair colour but those who have a little bit of exposure to Middle Eastern & Subcontinent’s population can normally make a good guess.

i know, but talking about average joe.

In North America:

Asian = Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Phillipino etc etc

Brown/Indian = Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi and Sri lankan

I always correct people and let them know I am a South Asian.
Use it as an an opportunity to educate.
Uptil mid 80s, you did not have a massive influx of Indian immigrants. Majority of "Asian" immigrants were chinese/vietnamese/japanes and that is what was related as Asian.

Now you get to see South Asian as an option in Race field of any governmental or employment form.

Mid 80s, my cousin was getting ready to go to med school. My uncle decided it would be a good idea to send him to a med school in Pakistan to toughen up his son :)

So he had a few of his high school friends over in Long Island. Majority were affluent kids accepted to Ivy league schools. One of them asked him where he was going? He said a school in Pakistan. She asked him if she can come visit him there on Amtrak (Train service in the US).

All joking aside, average American is least interested in what is going on with the rest of the world. Some have not ventured more than 100 miles away from where they were born. Sometimes you are amazed that such people vote to select the leader of the free world :)
There is a massive jump between high school education and university level education.

I would say an average South Asian is probably smarter than an average American

For sure...

However 15-20% are way ahead of anyone else in the world. They also get an environment which allows them to express and experiment without fear of failure. There is infrastructure and resources available for anyone to chart their own path. That is why a lot of bright people would prefer to come over to the US and make it their home versus say UK, Germany, France, Scandanavia. All of which are as good if not better when it comes to educational institutes.

no , if average south asian was smarter than average american , south asia wasnt a such mess , america attracts finest brains as immigrants , so average american looks more stupid , but the reality is that most common people everywhere around the world dont think outside of their basic life circle =.

being smart is overrated in imo, having courage, hard work is what matters at the end of the day and US is just loaded with natural resources so even making money and starting businesses is not that hard compared to other countries, but people here are honestly not that smart compared to people across the world and that's me being brutally honest but the reason for the country's success is people here are the ultimate hustlers(can do anything for money) like people are so materialistic (I know people around the world are like this but here its just on an another level like every month new sneakers, cars, phones) and this materialism feeds the need to get money and like people do anything and everything to get money like people in businesses and jobs just putting so many hours in, hell even in high school so many of my friends were doing like 30-40 hours of work and than with that money they just bought the newest things, like sneakers, games, partying and everything (imagine what happens when they become adults)

So imo the greatest asset of this country is that people are addicted for money and there are so many ways to make money (well I know buying and spending money like this is kinda stupid but in the macro level this stupidity pays off and the country becomes rich cause of consumer spending)

Well, there is always another way to look at the scenario. How about calling them being realists? Money at the end of the day brings food and provides basic necessities of life. If they are earning it, they have the right to spend it in whatever way they deem fit. In contrast, in Indian subcontinent culture, one earns and the rest of the family shares the slice of the pie. And, this non-materialism culture sets off a vicious circle of laziness so I guess this capitalism/materialism way of life is better as it keeps everyone on their toes and compels them to work harder and make a life for themselves.

Well there’s no confusion regards to that in Canada or at least in the GTA. Browns/Indians are in majority in the GTA. In just last few years, hundreds of thousands of Indian students have poured in.

I won’t be surprised if Indians take over Canada.

Majority of them are getting "fake" degrees from run-by-Indians shady colleges. These degrees are 3 years long, so you qualify for permanent residence once you graduate and work a year. Massive loophole in the immigration system being exploited by Indians.

Check this video of massive deportation of Indian students who had faked their IELTS.

honestly I don't know which is better I guess it depends on a person what he wants his life to be like but I am not saying one is better than other I am just saying this is the core reason for the success of US as a country cause they love to make money but money is also not everything

indians are like everywhere , where ever you go in europe/usa/canada, universities are getting overflooded with indians, they make there own circles, support each other , can work on any wage. I think there should be a limit to immigantion from india , i mean they are like 1.4 billion , they can literally flood the world.

Due to the effects of Globalization, even people living in Pakistan are more materialism-centric and pretty much have developed a similar kind of mindset which is prevalent in western societies. If you have money to give away or ulterior motives, Thank You Sir, otherwise get the hell out of my way.

True. They are even in small villages and towns of most European countries (on political asylum).

Though the interesting question is whether its of some advantage to us Pakistanis in having more south asian around. I know we have many on going issues with each other but at some level its also beneficial.

That said the mis-use of the system and the loop holes are there on a purpose. We had these fake 2 room colleges in the UK for many years (when cheap labour was needed) but gradually with Eastern European countries joining EU, those colleges were promptly closed by the Government. Probably its a similar scenario in Canada.

I always wonder how come these shady colleges work and operate so easily in the UK when British immigration officers have this holier-than-thou attitude when it comes to screening visa applicants from Pakistan or India and double checks every piece of document. And either they refuse or ban visa applicants on the basis of submitting fake documents, on the other hand, they let these shady colleges take advantage of these poor South Asians who do not have the means to study and survive there in the first place. So it is all about money.

not sure , indians themselves are so segregated here , sikhs dont associate much with south indians, pakistanis see indians as just another foreigners , Pakistanis get closest to turks on personal level here.

The British authorities knew abt these fake colleges all along. They just turn a blind eye, as long as they had the need for cheap labour willing to work in slave like conditions.
As i said, in the UK there was a crackdown some years ago and these colleges dont exist any longer but at the same time the British governments have deflated there educational standards by granting a University to almost every smallish village tech college and polytechnics. As a result of this there are now hundreds of legal but low standard universities competing for Foreign students. Many are not vigorous and are mainly interested in the fees.

What were you taught regarding the native Indians? Does the school teach how they were ethnically cleansed?

Your actual source/evidence for your statement?

It's my opinion.
The average american can't even label their own state on a map let alone do high-level maths.

South Asia is in a mess because we don't have money. Looters stole it.
But when South Asians get the proper education and the proper facilities, they eclipse the natives.

Even in the UK, universities are filled with South Asians.
A good percentage of the doctors here are Asians (mostly Indians and Pakistanis)

Aren't you a Pakistani?

If you are then how did you not know about Indians?

Lol I’m usually here talking about the many perks of living in the US, but yes, they are very much lacking in the geography department. Commonly thinking Pakistan, India are neighbors to the Gulf countries. Europe is just one big glop. And Asia is all Chinese people and the Middle East is it’s own continent.

Usually when I’m talking to someone born and raised in the US and they show this knowledge I’m kinda shocked and kinda sorry for them.

At the same time, hard to blame them. Most of these people don’t travel anywhere to the world outside of Mexico and the US is kinda its own world detached from the rest.

My favorite is when someone says “Hey, aren’t you Islamic?” Hahaha.

Its not about geography only. As the time has passed, "Asian" has somewhat changed its meaning in Spoken terms. For example, even in Japanese or Korean sites, if you'll see "Asian movies", it simply means movies from China, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines etc. If you want to find Desi movies, you'll have to go for south Asian category. West is just adopting this trend.

Simply speaking, the "Asian" that we understand and the "Asian" that is west may think both could be different yet both could be acceptable depending upon context.

It takes a special person to leave their country to emigrate. So the ones who are here are already smarter/driven than then ones they left behind back home. However if you take the average iq level I bet Americans have 10-15 point on desi (Indians and Pakistanis). Plenty of it has to do with nutrition also. Having said all that I find Americans to be clueless about what’s happening outside this immediate borders. Having traveled pretty extensively I would also say that Americans are also the best who think outside the box.

I don't think it takes some specialty to leave home.

Sometimes, local competitions could be so tough that you choose a different eco system where your survival strength will be better suited.

Moreover, I believe the people you mentioned will constitute very less percentage of immigrants. More will be, a relative of whom who is already there, will take some initiative and then start the process. Then you have low skilled works.

Just because people stayed at home country, that doesn't mean they are weak or they have less drive for success. These two are totally unrelated conclusions and doesn't depend one upon the other.

Average Americans’ knowledge of geography or lack of awareness of International geopolitics is notorious.

I used to have a white lady in her 50s as my boss years ago, and she was the Director of Technology so not that she was not educated, but she was terribly misinformed and uneducated about certain stuff.

We were once talking about the international world famous Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci, and for some reason my boss kept referring to her as Russian. After a while I couldn’t resist and corrected her stating she was Romanian. And my boss argued with me that Romania was/is a Russian state. I told her it’s a sovereign Eastern European state. Later on she brought me a google printout of some cia website that described how Romania was a close ally of the former Soviet Union and practically a Soviet territory..

I had to politely apologize for my mistake because I realized then how friggin moronic she was.. the media is the same way.

I once told a fellow co worker that technically I was not middle eastern and I was south asian.

She started laughing and told others who also laughed at me.

An average American’s ignorance is unparalleled!

I generally ignore this type of ignorant people. It is a complete waste of time trying to converse with these people beyond necessity.

Well that’s why I apologized to her because I knew I wasn’t going to get anywhere with trying to convince her. Haha..

Having said that, I believe there is a good reason behind this phenomenon.

World History and Geography are two subjects not taught well (if at all) at the high school level in the US. Even at the college level, these subjects are not mandatory and offered as electives.

So if a born and raised American is knowledgeable in these areas, it’s really either borne out of necessity or choice.. and I’ll explain what I mean by that.
Choice: if the person is keen to educate themselves on their own, outside of the system... self study or taking elective classes during college

Or

Necessity: where they picked a career that required them acquire this knowledge

Compared with the rest of most of the world where such knowledge comes naturally either through schooling or news media which covers world politics and geography significantly more than US outlets.

This type of ignorance is not common in the UK and pretty proud of the UK for that.
Looks like the British left their people in the US but forgot to give them their intelligence

Nadia komanechi was Russian when she was at her peak. She's right in that context. Old people have hard time of changing geographic borders. For example, many old people in Ukraine still think of the country as Russia instead of Ukraine.

That is incorrect, including the spellings of her last name.

Look it up.. she was never Russian.

And what I was talking about has nothing to do with age.. it’s young educated people as well who are in general less aware of geography and history than rest of the world.

In case of soviet union and aftermath, you will have to look at the years because people often use soviet union and Russia interchangeably. That's how usually people talk from my personal experience in Ukraine and Moscow.

She can be called as Russian in broader aspect but Romanian if you go by technicality. That's why I said, people often need to look at context because the social construction and philosophy of Russia and its parts are very different from other countries which are separated. The way Desi societies get disintegrate after separation is very different from how the division of soviet took place. They still have a confused identity that is mixed between older generation and newer generation.

But that’s where you are wrong. You are confusing Romania for a former soviet state, which it never was. Romania is not like Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, etc. Romania was always a sovereign country and apart from 44-58 when Russia illegally occupied them, there is no Russian connection.
Comaneci first participated in the olympics in 76 when she represented Romania. She never represented Russia or Soviet Union

I should have wrote from 44-58, Soviet Union occupied Romania.. not Russia..

Its OK. As I said, it's usual to interchange Russia and soviet union as long as the year is mentioned to avoid the confusion.

Russian occupation during those years wasn't just occupation. Soviet used to integrate the culture and society to them heavily on order to prohibit any kind of uprising. And 14 years is a long term for that. I haven't been to Romania so I am not in a position to comment how deep these integration are. But visiting a few other post soviet countries, I must say, the Russians did their homework with perfection.... And soviet was very aggressive in all of their endeavors so I won't be surprised if cultural trace is still present in a considerable amount still.

I you Truly wanna live free then move to teh south . People are mostly nice and you will still get a wave or a smile walking down the streets. You's get people holding doors open for you . Southern hospitality is a real things . If you are a PC snowflake then you'll have a tougher time though , Racism in a little bit more out in the open than the hush-hush behind teh doors racism you'd experience up north .

I never called anyone weak . However it does that a special person to leave his/her hometown. There is a great article written on this years ago when i was doing my masters. I will try to find it once home next week and post it.

I think you meant special in a sense that you are OK with taking risk cause its hard to be in a different city let alone be in a different country so a tougher mindset is required

What part of the south tho? Definitely not Texas lol.

The geography, history etc in America is very US centric. Since they have such a large country, they focus on their geography like learning their states, it's capitals, etc. Same goes with history which is more focused on the Revolutionary War, Civil war etc.

Since their country is so big and has almost all types of landscapes and other attractions within itself, most people don't travel abroad, in fact that is why more than 60% of Americans don't have passports. The fact that they don't have to speak a different language or deal with different customs, cultures etc is an added advantage of sorts.

Video is fake, CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) has refuted the claim on Twitter -

You do NOT qualify for work permit in Canada if you study in non accredited Private college in Canada, no chance of PR. For PR just study and work alone is not enough, see latest point requirement. My friend from Lithuania is struggling to qualify after studying and working here since last 7 years. Please do not spread misinformation and undermine the hardships faced by 'International' students in Canada, majority of them must be 5-10 years younger than you living away from family.

indians are like everywhere , where ever you go in europe/usa/canada, universities are getting overflooded with indians, they make there own circles, support each other , can work on any wage. I think there should be a limit to immigantion from india , i mean they are like 1.4 billion , they can literally flood the world.

Indian expat population is 16.6 million
Pakistan expat population is 8.8 million

India's population is 7 times more than Pakistan. India's number is actually minuscule.
