I remember one time me and my sri lankan friend watching chandimal when he started his carrier boy this guy looked a million dollar and my friend was like he is the replacement of mahela this guy had all the shots in cricket somehow he turned out to be pakistan umer akmal just never got his talent going really sad at one stage he looked way better than any of the fab four sadly chandimal just couldn't fulfill his talent.

Incredibly inconsistent, too many players have one good game or one good series followed by 4-5 bad ones.

Was never that talented. Overhyped and was lazy.

Their are players who became legends despite not being talented. Steve Smith isnt talented at all.

He's an ugly batsmen who doesnt have the best reactions either. Lots of edges, misses etc etc.

He became a champion test batter due to learning and understanding the game really and playing to his strengths.

If I remember correctly he scored twin 50's in his debut vs the all conquering SA team in SA.

I mean he averages 43/44 and has scored 6k runs he's had a decent career especially in tests
Ya but talent he should have made sri lanka great in test matches like how sanga and mahela made atleast in sri lanka.

One thing i admire about austrailian is that they study the game good.
Most of smart thinkers are from aus, maybe education or culture whatever it is but it helps them alot.
Shane Warne
Smith
Warner
Cummins
Just to name few. Very smart readers of game.
Compare it to pakistan from coaching to players no one understands pitch and conditions. Like aus shifted to slow balls in cwc23 final and had straight fine leg for sky was too smart.

On the topic of chandimal, he was Azhar Ali type batsman albeit a bit more soothing to the eyes but azhar was more gritty. And they have almost similar returns from their long careers. Playing close to 100 tests is by no means small.

He has played 80+ tests for Sri Lanka and has an Average of 43 in test cricket, i think that’s a great career. There is no comparison whatsoever with Umar Akmal.

I get the gist though, he was known as a great talent just like how Kamindu Mendis is looked upon.

I agree. Weirdly enough that mantra doesnt apply to England despite being a developed English speaking country as well.

You'd think the inventors and early developers of cricket would have the greatest understanding of the game especially in test cricket but theyve been getting pounded since pre ww2.

Throughout their entire history they've honestly had pretty forgettable players. Sure their a few like root, KP, and some of their bazzballers, bowlers and test cricketers like cook, Ian bell, Butler, Roy, Bairstow, James Anderson, broad etc etc

But their far and few inbetween. England's entire cricket history can be summed up as having maybe 3 to 4 years of peak moments followed by decades of stagnation.

They recover here and their for a few years before declining eventually.

I think the lack of test cricket has affected him. He was a top player for Lankans in red ball, but since the fever of leagues has spread, the game of many players has been affected.

When I saw him batting for the first time, I felt that he is the future of Lankan cricket . He is technically solid player. A Massive underachiever
