What is the point of having DRS without Hot-Spot or Snicko?

This is not about a specific decision but a more general observation - how can DRS be effectively used without Hot-Spot or Snicko? When these forms of technology aren't available, any decisions relating to edges all depend on the Umpire.

It's not a level playing field when edges are potentially being missed - a decision that is given not out might be clearly out due to a slight nick via Hot-Spot or Snicko, and vice versa. It also affects LBWs with guess-work having to be done with regards to whether there was an edge or not.

The availability of Hawkeye is still a good thing, and I am not suggesting that DRS be abandoned - but there needs to be some regularity ensuring that the same facilities are available where needed.

Discuss.

To overturn the complete obvious a blind man could see it decisions

Azhar ali was given out on wrong decision and it was over turn so Agree with other something is better than nothing

Exactly!!!! why PCB will waste money on Such a expensive technology as they are already

struggling with empty ground

If they can pay a legion of journos to go on tours etc. then surely they can spare some money to implement a standard technology - Pakistan is currently ranked #2 in Test cricket, we're not some gully mohalla team.

It's the tv broadcasters that pay as far as I am aware.

Which given that the PCB often negotiates contracts by series rather than have long term multi year contracts is probably the issue

Interesting.

So this makes it completely dependant on the broadcaster?

DRS should be uniform no matter who is playing. Hotspot, Hawkeye, Sniko all three should be available in all series including ODI's for all teams.

Obviously all this will cost money as nothing is free. That is up to the powers that be to discuss and find a solution.

They should be there, but DRS is still needed even if they aren't.

What do you want? Kick out DRS if Hot Spot or Snicko isn't there? It still is a massive help.

Hawkeye and slow motion replays are the points. It's better than nothing.

It's not just about paying for them. Hotspot apparently contains some sensitive military technology that the UK government won't clear for use in certain countries. Don't quote me on this but back when DRS first came out the same questions were raised over a lack of standardization and some commentator mentioned this.

They use SLX Hawk cameras, which are apparently state of the art infra-red/thermal imaging cameras.

I think ICC needs to be make a call on these technologies. Either they force the host board to foot the bill 100%and ensure these are available in all test matches that happen throughout the world. Or ICC pays for it themselves or agree on some sort of subsidization model where host board pays for it but ICC partly subsidizes.

Currently its a joke.

Some tests have it in full, some in part, some don't at all... ridiculous really!

This issue comes to the fore again. First Misbah was given not out earlier for an LBW based on a guess that he had edged it (looked out) and now he is given out caught behind after a few minutes' worth of replays.

Some of these decisions seem to involve guess-work at this point.

At least Hot-spot should be available.

DRS without hotspot and snicko is a bit lame but it still can eliminate the howlers. Like a batsman been given out lbw after hitting the ball or with the ball pitching outside leg . Or caught when theres clear daylight between bat and ball. which is better than the pre DRS world.
