A lot of Pakistani ex players are appreciative of PCB's plan to introduce the Champions T-20, ODI and 4 day events because the PCB realizes that they have to strike the right balance b/w quantity and quality in domestic cricket.

While the regional city based Quaid-e-Azam trophy, Presidents Patron Department tournaments are ensuring that the maximum number of players in the domestic cricket are getting an opportunity to play, there is also a realization that 40-50% of the players who are playing these tournaments will be very ordinary and therefore the PCB selectors cannot rely on the stats of the players from these tournaments for selection to the national team, U19 team and Shaheen's team.

Therefore it was decided that the best thing to do is to introduce a Champions tournament format for T-20, ODI and 4 day where the top 150-200 players from the Quaid-e-Azam, Presidents Patron tournament, U19 tournaments will be selected and disbursed into the 5 teams i.e. Dolphins, Lions, Panthers, Stallions and Wolves. Each team will have a mentor who will be given the director of cricket role for their team and he will oversee the players, the coaching staff, physio, trainer and will devise strategies and monitor the workload of the players and as we all know these mentors are heavyweights i.e. Waqar Younis, Misbah ul Haq, Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq. These mentors are going to be paid handsomely i.e. Rs 5 million a month for 3 years.

The question is how can the PCB best organize these Champions tournaments to ensure the top national team players are available to play and to ensure these tournaments are held across a wide range of venues in Pakistan at least on a home and away basis.

Champions T-20 tournament

- This has to be held leading into the PSL i.e. February - March if the PCB plans to hold the PSL in April and May going forward co-existing with the IPL. This means the regional city based T-20 and department T-20 tournaments need to be held around January, February and even March

Champions ODI tournament

-
This has to be held based on Pakistan's international ODI commitments. ODI cricket is a dying and rare bread in international cricket. The PCB can aim to wrap up the regional ODI and departmental ODI tournaments by September, October and aim to hold the Champions ODI cup around August next year.

Champions Pentangular tournament

- This is perhaps the trickiest format to host for the PCB. The PCB has to hold this event at a time when all of Pakistan's national players are available with no international commitments and no leagues and it has to be held at a time when the weather in Pakistan is suitable to play cricket or on venues where the weather is not as taxing for the players. The PCB can aim to hold the following tournaments in this order

Regional City Based 4 day tournaments (September-October)
Department 4 day tournament (November - December)

At present the PCB plans to hold the Champions 4 day pentangular tournament from May 28 to August 5 which is extremely tough weather wise but this is the only time period when all of Pakistan's national team players are free from international commitments therefore they have no choice.

Will be very tough to see how all this is implemented

Mohsin Naqvi has given the PCB marketing department to find commercial, broadcast partners for this tournament and that the PCB needs to earn atleast Rs 1-3 billion from these Champions events.
