What's new

What should Pakistan's squad be for the T20 World Cup?

Sharjeel
Rizwan
Babar
Hafeez
Haider
Azam
Nawaz
Hasan
Amir
Qadir
Shaheen

Gun team. If no Amir then Rauf/Hasnain

I've followed Pakistan's last 3 T20I series against decent teams (England, New Zealand and South Africa) and purely based on that , I'd try playing this XI in the first match....

Babar Azam
Mohammad Rizwan
Mohammad Hafeez
Haider Ali
Fakhar Zaman
Imad Wasim
Faheem Ashraf
Hasan Ali
Usman Qadir
Shaheen Afridi
Zahid Mehmood/Hasnain (based on the wicket)

I'm putting Fakhar Zaman in the middle order to deal with leg spinners (pretty much every team has them) in the middle overs. He can also counter attack if there's a collapse upfront. The same reason why I'm inclined to try Dhawan in the MO (if Kishan doesn't come off) and push Rahul to open...

This is a better XI than I’ve seen any Pakistani put up :))

People need to stop sticking Fakhar and Sharjeel in as their openers. Please look at their strike rates during the powerplay and make a rational decision as to who can maximize strike rate during that phase of the game. During that phase Fakhar and Sharjeel are slower than Babar who is slower than Rizwan.

Statistically speaking, the best openers in the country to take advantage of the field restrictions against pace are Rizwan and Babar.

Next, since Rizwan and Babar are expected to stick around, Hafeez should play maximum overs and come in at number 3 as he is the best T20 batsman in the country.

Number 4 needs to be someone who is strong against spin and medium pace (usually this is the phase where the third pacer/usually an allrounder and first spinner enter the bowling attack). Fakhar and Sharjeel are the best options in the country here, and although Sharjeel is slightly more destructive, I pick Fakhar because he can run singles and doubles quicker and field better.

Sharjeel couldn’t stop a four yesterday when Amir was bowling in the death overs and that released all the pressure against Lahore, allowing them to win.

Fakhar also already has excellent chemistry with half the team (Babar, Shaheen, Hassan Ali, Shadab, Faheem, and Hafeez) and is on good terms with everyone else, whereas Sharjeel is a spot fixer which is generally bad for morale, has chemistry only with Babar and Imad, and would not get along with people like Hafeez who detest fixers. However, given the form Sharjeel is in, he will sit on my bench as alternative number 4.

At number 5, Haider Ali.

From 6 onwards you need all rounders since none of the top 5 can bowl (we need 6 bowling options). Hafeez is considered the 7th option and will be used against left handers only in a particularly favorable matchup like Chris Gayle.

The best all rounders available are Imad, Nawaz, Faheem, Shadab and then you have bowlers who can bat, Hassan Ali and Usman Qadir, and then you have Shaheen as a must pick.

Those are 7 names in all, the Chief Selector’s decision will be to pick 6 of these. We can also sacrifice batting depth for a pure bowler like Zahid Mehmood or Hasnain but I see Zahid Mehmood as equivalent to Shadab with the ball and worse with the bat/in the field.

1. Babar Azam
2. Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
3. Mohammad Hafeez
4. Fakhar Zaman
5. Haider Ali
6. Imad Wasim
7. Faheem Ashraf
8. Mohammad Nawaz
9. Shadab Khan / Usman Qadir
10. Hassan Ali
11. Shaheen Afridi

15-man squad

1. Fakhar
2. Babar
3. Rizwan
4. Sharjeel
5. Hafeez
6. Haider Ali
7. Faheem Ashraf
8. Shadab Khan/Usman Qadir
9. Hassan Ali
10. Shaheen Afridi
11. Haris Rauf / Hasnain

12. Shadab Khan / Usman Qadir
13. Haris Rauf / Hasnain
14. Zahid Mahmood
15. Imad Wasim

Big No No 15-man squad: KEEP THESE 15 MILES AWAY FROM THE NATIONAL TEAM

1. Imam Ul Haq
2. Kamran Akmal (wk)
3. Hussain Talat
4. Iftikhar Ahmed
5. Shoaib Malik (c)
6. Asif Ali
7. Sarfaraz Ahmed
8. Mohamad Nawaz
9. Wahab Riaz
10. Mohammad Amir
11. Mohammad Irfan (knowing Misbahs obsession with him)

12. Rahat Ali

Sherjeel Khan
Sarfaraz Ahmed
Babar Azam
Mohammed Hafeez
Mohammed Rizwan
Haider Ali
Imad Wasim
Faheem Ashraf
Hasan Ali
Usman Qadir
Shaheen Afridi

Haris Rauf
Shoaib Malik
Shadab Khan
Mohammed Hasnain

All the teams in this thread look good but I just feel we're lacking one more quality batsman. The likes of Shoaib Malik, Azam Khan and Iftikhar don't fill me with much confidence.

Fakhar
Rizwan
Babar
Hafeez
Haider
Faheem
Nawaz
Hasan
Qadir
Shaheen
Rauf

If it's a spinner friendly pitch, wouldn't mind replacing Rauf with Zahid..Shadab & Imad have been in woeful form, a message needs to be sent, no place can be taken for granted

1fakher (Id take sharjeel in squad but his poor fielding means fakher edges it for me)
2rizwan
3babar
4hafeez
5haider
6 faheem ( where an extra batsman may be required someone else could slot in )
7 imad/nawaz ( maybe both if its a spin friendly track in favour of hasnain)
8qadir/zahid
9hassan
10hasnain/
11shaheen

should the extra batsman be needed

Sharjeel
Babar
Fakher/riz. (depending on batting situation)
hafeez
Riz/Fakher
haider
bowlers...

i would like rizwan opening if form continues but babar and sharjeel have history batting together and seem to have decent understanding

ideally amir would be in my squad but being realistic his off field issues mean that it is unlikely he will be picked

Sharjeel
Rizwan
Babar
hafeez
Haider
Faheem
Nawaz
Qadir
Hasan
Aamir
Shaheen

Bench: Fakhar, Shadab, Maqood, Hasnain, Rauf

Pakistan's possible WT20 2021 Squad?

As always, Pakistan's fast bowling ranks are swelling but their batting is looking fragile and the spin department is bare right now....Usman Qadir is not taking wickets, neither is Nawaz, Shadab is AWOL and there isn't really anyone else. You want to win tournaments in India? You need great batting and good spin bowling.

A squad of 15 I see at the moment:

Batting
Babar Azam
Muhammad Rizwan
Fakhar Zaman
Haider Ali
Sharjeel Khan

Fast Bowling
Hasan Ali
Muhamamd Hasnain
Shaheen Afridi
Dhanawi/Arshad/Rauf

Allrounders
Faheem Ashraf - average
Muhammad Nawaz - bowling is bad
Muhammad Hafeez - old

Spinners
Usman Qadir - not taking enough wickets
Qais Ahmed - very new
Zahid Mahmood - old

Are these players capable of even getting to the KO stage?

I hope dahani gets some proper bowling coaching as I think he is a great prospect.

Qais Ahmed is afghani lol don't think he can play for us.

I hope rizwan etc can keep their form for the world cup.

I would also include imad in that all rounder list.

WC T20 Squad

After seeing the performance of the African series, if the management would have hopefully learned something , hopefully they have realized that our middle order batting and bowling needs work. With the time left and the pool available, the best possible squad I feel would be below and we can utilize each player the maximum to their potential and hope for good results.

1. Sherjeel Khan
2. Fakhar Zaman
3. Babar Azam
4. M.Hafeez
5. M.Rizwan
6. Ifthikhaar
7. Imad Wasim
8. M.Nawaz
9. Hasan Ali
10. M.Amir
11. Shaheen Afridi
12. Sarfaraz Ahmed
13. Faheem Ashraf
14. M.Hasnain
15. Usman Qadir

Fakhar and Sherjeel have to open, no exceptions, there a waste and walking wicket coming in the middle order

Rizwan has done great but he is better suited in the middle for accumulating runs along with Babar and Hafeez

Imad and Ifthikhar/Faheem can be used lower down the order for power hitting. Ifthikhar i feel was wrongfully dropped as he did wellin T20 in Australia and can bowl off spin considering the WC happening in India.

For the pace battery I feel Hasan, Shaheen Amir would make a good trio and Hasnain as back up. Haris Rauf has potential but is too raw and needs more experience in domestic.

Usman Qadir is a good backup for a spin bowler and has doen reasonably well.

I am sure there are other names I might have missed but based on the time available and pool available, the team management should work on this squad I feel till the WCT20.

Not balanced, Faheem is not power hitter we've learned it hard way, he's more like innings builder, evidence is based on his test form and continuous failings when asked to slog in last overs. So need for Azam khan at no.6, You're missing on Azam Khan, I'd say competition b/w Azam Khan and Iftikhar for no.6.

Secondly, Rizwan is best utilized at top, and Babar is also best utilized in PP, Babar is natural finder of gaps, so I'd have Sharjeel Babar Rizwan Hafeez Fakhar, this is best, Fakhar can solve our no.5 problems since he's good hitter of spin, pressure player and can play according to his situation, and can slog easily unlike Rizwan who's better at top. In T20s competion b/w Nawaz/Faheem/Imad for no.7 position depending on pitch conditions and batting performance of either. Usman Qadir and Zahid mehmood one can play, other can remain in squad, depends who performs better. Fast bowlers can rotate amongst Hassan Ali, Hasnain, Haris Rauf, Shaheen, Arshad Iqbal. We're not playing two or three matches, but multiple series and then world cup, so its better fast bowlers rotate, each bowler have their own strength, all should travel with team.

In ODIS we can have Iftikhar/Azam at 5 Rizwan at 4, Faheem confirmed no.6 due to his test form and competition b/w Imad/Nawaz for no.7

You cant have Rizwan and Babar both in middle order, we're playing t20's not test, they're best utilized at top, lets say Sharjeel and Fakhar both hit 100 runs in first 10 overs, then Rizwan and Babar will make 50 in last 10 overs, Its better to have anchor on one side and hitter at other end.

There's not much difference b/w Fakhar and Rizwan at top in t20s anyways, Fakhar Zaman is not Chris gayle, he only hits selective balls, Rizwan is better at top due to strike rotation and on his recent performances, he has ability to go till end if he gets time in the start. Fakhar on contrary can solve our no.5 problems. In case Sharjeel fails, we can give Haider chance at top or else bring Fakhar to opening, and play both Azam Khan and Iftikhar in middle.

Haider, Nawaz, Hasnain, Faheem, and Sarfaraz

Totally aligned on playing the two specialist, aggressive openers Sharjeel and Fakhar to give ourselves the chance to dominate the PP and run away with the game. The type of cricket Rizwan and Babar play will do just as well in the middle overs i.e low risk percentage cricket based on picking gaps and running between wickets.

Aligned on the need for Amir and Imad to return and they walk in for me.

Only suggested change is Zahid Mehmood ahead of Usman Qadir. As time will soon tell, Zahid is a better bowler who has the superior T20 record and he also did well recently in FC.

Replace Nawaz with Malik. Malik is a better batsman and his bowling is on par with Nawaz.

Replace Sarfaraz with either Azam Khan or Zeeshan Ashraf. Both of these guys are more suited to T20’s, Sarfaraz only gets in the team as an opener, otherwise he’s just a passenger.

Replace Faheem Ashraf with Aamir Yamin. Faheem’s role in the team is to play as an all rounder, right now he’s averaging 12. He should be kept for Tests only. Aamir Yamin is a better batsman and his bowling is probably on par with Faheem.

Replace Hasnain with Wahab. Both are bowlers that are likely to get hit out the park, but Wahab has the ability to reverse the ball, and he’s a much improved batsman.

Fakhar Zaman
Sharjeel Khan
Babar Azam
Mohammad Hafeez (RS)
Shoaib Malik
Zeeshan Ashraf (wk)
Ifthikar Ahmed (RS)
Imad Wasim (LS)
Hassan Ali (RF)
Mohammad Amir (LF)
Shaheen Afridi (LF)

Wahab Riaz
Azam Khan
Mohammad Rizwan
Aamir Yamin

Shoaib Malik instead of Nawaz.
Middle order needs a shrewd fox.

I'm surprised at the PP love affair with Sharjeel and more with Sharjeel and Fakhar to open. Its absolutely mind boggling that PP is strongly advocating that Rizwan drops into the middle overs. The guy is having a freak season as an opener in international cricket and has delivered exceptionally in the year but somehow its still not enough when compared to "potential" of Sharjeel.

Let's take a moment to understand the argument here, PP are advocating for someone who is proven cheat, unfit and obese, liability in the field and no international performances in his belt to someone who has had a freak season as opener for Pakistan in T20s it has been such a freak season that he might be currently the most successful Pakistan T20 opener ever statistically. It is shambolic to think Sharjeel would be successful over Rizwan when opening innings.

I dont like the idea of Rizwan in middle order given that he is our best batsmen at the moment ever since he was promoted to open the batting. No need to disturb him as he is performing with amazing consistency at top. I actually like the idea of Fakhar as finisher and Babar at one down. My playing eleven will be.

1. M. Rizwan ( Advantage of left and right opening combo)
2. Sharjeel K.
3. Babar A.
4. M. Hafeez
5. Sarfraz A. / S. Malik ( Only 1 since world cup is in india and both are good against spinners)
6. Fakhar Z. ( Can be used as floater based on game situation)
7. Imaad W. / Faheem A (Based on pitch condition but only 1 can play)
8. Hassan Ali
9. Usman Q
10. Shaheen A.
11. Haris Rauf / M. Hasnain / M. Nawaz

12. Haider Ali
13. M. Nawaz
14. M. Hasnain
15. Faheem A.

I presume this will be the likely team going forward unless someone has an exceptional psl and we unearth a new talent.

Sharjeel being a “cheat” is not, and should not be a problem.
Man has served his time ACCORDING TO EXISTING RULES AND REGULATIONS. And now, he should be given a fair chance.

If someone believes that cheats should be permanently banned, then they should take up with the current rules and regulations, and use their time and energy to change them.
No point in going after the player.
(IMO, the only exception to this philosophy is rapists, and pedophlles, If proven guilty based on an undeniable piece of evidence in a fair trial, then they shouldn’t be given a second chance)

But Sharjeel being an over hyped and unfit player, is something that I agree with.

He is an EXTREMELY limited batsman who IN THE PAST was able to play a few good tulla type lapaaru shots when the ball pitched perfectly at a particular line and length and at a certain speed.
He can hardly do that anymore.
And if there is a slight variance in the ball being not in his zone, he is a walking duck to begin with.

Not sure what’s the obsession with him that some folks seem to have, perhaps based on a few glimpses of glories of the past?

Top order should be

1. Rizwan
2. Babar
3. Sharjeel
4. Fakhar
5. Hafeez
6. Sarfaraz / Malik

Your WT20 team on PSL form?

WT20 is most likely going to be played in UAE and as we have seen in the second leg of PSL, some of our first choice players are not suitable for UAE conditions. Keeping the current form and conditions in mind, my WT20 team would be:

Babar
Rizwan
Maqsood
Malik
Asif
Iftikhar
Shadab
Imad/Faheem (according to bowling conditions)
Hasan
Shaheen
Dhani

I don't like the inclusion the Asif and Iftikhar, but they are miles better than Haiders and Azams.

Asif, Malik, Ifti Chacha should definitely be included in the T20 squad. There's no point in playing PSL if the performing players don't get rewarded with selection in the National team.

Hafeez has failed very badly in this PSL and failing in International Cricket for sometime. He is destined to fail in the upcoming WT20, it's better to find a replacement for him now.

Include the consistent performers of PSL in the National squad and if they perform better against WI and England in the T20 series then they should be included in the WT20 squad.

I'll go with similar team except that I'd like to see Aamir instead of Wahab partnering Shaheen.

Will prefer Qadir over Shadab, even if that means a slightly long tail.

Amir ain't coming back before this world cup, so no point thinking of that

Chacha Ifti should definitely be in the side.

Good player of spin and can bowl handy offspin.

Definitely wouldn't take hafeez, azam Khan and haider ali to the WC.

Pakistan Squad for the world T20!

So we've had some time to reflect and review previous performances and assemble a squad we think is capable of competing and winning the world T20 in October. Here's my take below:

Sharjeel
Rizzy
Babar
Haider
Iftikhar
Yamin
Shadab
Nawaz
Hassan
Qadir
Shaheen

Maqsood
Wasim jnr
Hafeez
Dhani
Zahid

Our middle order is extremely brittle and players who look a million dollars in domestic competitions are like rabbits in headlights when it comes to internationals. Players like Khushdil, talat, Asif Ali, haider, Ifthikar, Maqsood have consistently flattered to decieve in international colours. Failing to make the step up and continuously putting pressure on our 2 elite batsmen babar and rizwan to score the bulk of the runs. Alas, we have no other choice but to persist with the best domestic performers so haider, ifti and Maqsood make the cut in my squad. Ifti especially is easily the best middle order batsman in Pakistan atm especially at 5 but he never seems to make it count in pak colours. Haider is a pure punt going on his immense talent levels. We have limited options for the middle order sadly.

Im a big fan of aamir Yamin the batsman. As an all rounder I think he's a batting is much stronger then his bowling but he is more then capable of chipping in with 1/2 overs upfront. His batting is massively underrated for me and he can clear the boundary with ease. He's been hard done by thus far to date in his career especially with absolute trash like faheem getting continously picked ahead of him.

With the tournament being played in oman/uae I've opted for 3 spinners in shadab, usman and Nawaz. 3 very good options who between should be able to tie down opposition and take much needed middle over wickets. Muhammad wasim jnr who I'm a huge fan of and has immense potential as a genuine all rounder can come in for any of those 3 if more pace firepower is required.

Also a huge fan of shahnawaz Dhani. The lad is a pure match winner and has a ton of potential.

Thoughts? What would be your squad?

Let us see how many of these feature in the home matches against England before T20WC

My Squad
1. Sharjeel
2. Rizwan
3. Babar
4. Hafeez
5. Fakhar
6. Maqsood
7. Imad
8. Faheem
9. Qadir
10. Hasan
11. Shaheen
Back up :
1. Azam Khan 2. Dhani 3. Sadab 4. Hasnain

Batting will be sorted out.
Bowling apart from Shaheen and Hasan not so sure.

Apparently the squad that gets picked for the NZ series will be the same as the WT20 squad. Therefore it’s unlikely we’ll see Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir.

Predicted Squad:

Sharjeel Khan
Mohammad Rizwan
Babar Azam
Mohammad Hafeez
Fakhar Zaman
Azam Khan
Imad Wasim
Shadab Khan
Mohammad Nawaz
Hassan Ali
Shaheen Afridi
Haris Rauf
Mohammad Wasim Jnr
Sohaib Maqsood
Mohammad Hasnain

Sarfaraz Ahmed (injury replacement)

Maqsood was getting a few runs and then holing out in a string of games he played. I think Malik would be a better option and he's a much better fielder.

Might as well try Sharjeel in the middle order then?

He's also an option. I would only play one of Sharjeel or Azam though. Can only have one fine leg.
Azam Khan is destined to fail based on his non existent experience. Sharjeel has at least scored some gun runs in PSL and of course is more experienced, I am backing Sharjeel for the middle order spot. Let Rizwan, Fakhar & Babar be our safe top 3.

Babar
Rizwan
Maqsood
Haider
Fakhar
Hafeez
Shadab
Hassan
Wasim
Shaheen

Firstly T20 world cup is going to take place in UAE...so playing spin will be priority..now who r best batters against spin
Shoaib Malik
Sarfaraz
Hafeez
So these three should play..
So position 4,5,6 are fixed..
Hafeez
Sarfaraz
Shoaib Malik
Now what about 1,2and 3 position
Babar is automatic choice...
Two dashers at top in shape of fakhar and sharjeel
So 1,2,3 shall be
Fakhar
Sharjeel
Babar
Now need two bowling allrounders at 7,8
Imad and
Hassan Ali
9,10and 11
Need to be two skillful pacers and 1spinner
Should be ideally,
M.Amir
Shaheen
And Usman qadir as leg spinner..
So batting order shall be like
Fakhar
Sharjeel
Babar
Hafeez
Hassan Ali as floater to increase run rate in
case bogged down by opponent
spinners
Sarfaraz
Shoaib
Imad
Amir
Usman

Though difficult to drop Rizwan on current form ....but I believe agressive stance be adopted by PCB,policy of horses for courses be adopted..Sarfaraz is much better playing against spin and Rizwan does get intially bogged at top order...he eventually makes it up but in UAE conditions it shall be difficult to makeup because spinners will eventually stranghold..

Media sources indicate that Pakistan is expected to name its T20 World Cup 2021 squad on September 6 in consultation with the coaching staff and skipper Babar Azam. The squad is expected to feature players who have been recently a part of Pakistan’s limited-overs squad for series against England, West Indies and the upcoming series against New Zealand.

Wonder how many players they’ll be taking to the WT20. Most teams are taking 16 with a couple of reserve players.

No major surprises are expected when chief selector Muhammad Wasim announces the Pakistan squad for the T20 World Cup on Monday.

The Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed on Sunday that Pakistan men’s T20I squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand and England, and the T20 World Cup will be announced at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Pakistan head coach Misbah-ul-Haq also returned to Lahore on Sunday morning after being forced to remain back in the West Indies for 12 days after he tested positive for Covid-19 when the national team was preparing to return home last month.

Misbah, who underwent a mandatory 10-day quarantine period in the Caribbean, reached Lahore via London and has already started consultations with the chief selector and captain Babar Azam to finalise the T20 squads.

Reliable sources aware of the development confirmed that the input of Pakistan’s former Test captain and incoming PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja had been taken on the squads to be named on Monday and he had stressed on having young players in the side.

"In all probability seniors like Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz and Sarfaraz Ahmed will not be part of the main 15-member squad but might be named among the reserve players for the World Cup as the ICC has allowed teams to bring reserve players to the UAE for the tournament on their own expenses,” one source said.

The source said that Babar was insistent on having Sarfaraz as the reserve keeper and Malik among the reserves who will travel with the team to UAE.

Another source said there was some debate going on whether to have hard-hitting openers Sharjeel Khan and Fakhar Zaman in the main squad or add middle order batsman Asif Ali in the squad while dropping either Sharjeel and Fakhar.

The source said that those confirmed a spot in the WC squad included obviously Babar himself, Muhammad Rizwan, Muhammad Hafeez, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Usman Qadir, Muhammad Wasim junior, Khushdil Shah, Sohaib Maqsood and Faheem Ashraf.

“The remaining four spots will be decided from amongst, Asif, Fakhar Zaman, Sharjeel Khan, Haris Rauf, Muhammad Hasnain, Imad Wasim, Muhammad Nawaz and Haider Ali,” he said.

The source said that Babar chief selector Muhammad Wasim and Misbah had agreed upon the fact that the squad should only be selected from amongst those players who have been tried out in the T20 format in the last two years.

If either one of Fakhar and Sharjeel gets dropped for Asif Ali, i will have to admit myself into a mental hospital.

I think I’m going to cry.

Nawaz>qadir

Ifthikhar>asif, kushdil, hafeez, malik and haider ali

Ifthikhar is must for the WC.

I'd take Sarfraz ahead all those guys as well.

Selection day today. In next 5 hours T20 WC team will be announced.
Pakistan fans.. are you excited.
Hearing Asif Ali may find himself on the plane to Dubai at the expense of Sharjeel or Fakhar.. That will be some selection i guess.
