Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 did not live up to expectations, leaving fans disappointed and raising serious questions about the team’s overall direction. From questionable team combinations to inconsistent performances on the field, there were several areas where things seemed to go wrong.

Was it the batting order, captaincy decisions, the role of the head coach, poor team selection, underperforming senior players, or simply a lack of talent? Let’s discuss the key reasons behind Pakistan’s below-par performance and break down where it all unraveled.

Well , poor skill levels , lack of focus on fitness , poor timid approaches, senior leeches and spineless management to start off with .

"Failed Again": Pakistan Greats Fume After 'Disappointing' T20 World Cup Exit

Pakistan may have ended their T20 World Cup campaign on a winning note but the team's overall performance in the mega event has cast a gloom over the country's cricket fraternity. “You get one chance in two years' time to leave an imprint of your country's cricket excellence and you fail again. It is very disappointing to see all this,” former captain and batting great Javed Miandad said on Sunday. The batting maestro said the more he watched T20 cricket, the more he realise it is now a very methodical format and the Pakistan players are not able to keep up with the other teams.

Miandad said the team's performance against the higher-ranked teams is a matter of great concern, and the Pakistan Cricket Board needs to take some radical decisions now.

Former captain Mohammad Yousuf said a few players had been given too many opportunities to establish themselves in T20 cricket and have failed to deliver in major events.

“It is time to move on and learn from our blunders,” he said.

Former skipper Moin Khan said that until Pakistan are not able to defeat higher-ranked teams, it would never win a ICC event.

“You can't win a major tournament unless you have the capability to beat top teams. Unfortunately, we have made too many mistakes in selection and on the field. More importantly, our main players didn't fire in the World Cup,” he lamented.

Former skipper Babar Azam, incumbent captain Salman Ali Agha and other senior players such as Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Mohammad Nawaz are facing intense criticism. Agha is expected to step down from leadership role after returning home.

Saqlain Mushtaq, who has also coached Pakistan in the past, has also faced lot of criticism for trying to defend his son-in-law Shadab's performances by putting the blame on head coach Mike Hesson.

“I don't think former players who sit as experts on these shows should do so if they have their close ones and relatives playing in the team. It is obvious their analysis is biased,” cricket writer Omair Alavi said.

Fair enough. But hiring these ex Pak players will not solve anything. They are back as leeches to get re-hired and claiming they will do miracles. Rinse and repeat

Team selection and knowing our best lineup

You play Muqeem regularly in 2024 and 2025, only to then exclude him from the squad. Similar story with Wasim jr

Fake all rounders Shadab and Nawaz selected despite numerous failings in the past, and predictably they again get exposed against big sides

Putting a T20 misfit in Babar azam in the lineup who stagnates the innings and puts undue pressure on everyone else

Excluding a clutch player Fakhar at first, then putting him in the middle order and then only putting him in his rightful opening slot in the very last game

Dropping your main spinner Abrar in a crunch game vs England

Bedding in Nafay just before the tournament, then not relying enough on him to give him a full tournament run. Picked in one game, then dropped until the last one which shakes his confidence

They did better than expected and only lost two games
In reality they should let the seniors out the t20i team and start experiments on the youngsters
There’s plenty more fish in the pond

Root cause is Hesson the head coach.

Poor team selection and seniors were all the result of appointing him the coach.

That was his strategy.

The same story in every ICC tournament: the team is packed with fake allrounders and then everyone is shocked when they get exposed.

Poor team selection, no strategy by coach and captain, poor fielding standards and selfish approah of our players.

All of this got exposed in the game against Sri Lanka. When the situation required a total above 200, the coach went to Farhan and Fakhar. If you knew they could do this, why wasnt this strategy adopted earlier? Why was Fakhar dropped from the team?

In the sri lanka game, after fakhar and farhan, there was not even a single batter that had the striking abilities of getting boundaries. Hesson was panicking when they sent in Nafay, hid Agha. The only player that got bat on ball was Naseem Shah. Shadab was being played as an aggressive hitter.

The fact that you had to select and send Khawaja Nafay in showed that you knew that you had no hitters in lower and mid, so why not choose such players in the squad.

Abrar ahmed was dropped against Nz and England? He was the best spinner of the squad, better than Tariq. Just because Tariq got the hype, you decided that he is the main spinner?

Than the Shaheen glory balls. Shaheen is as bad as Rauf. He will have a good game once in a while, doesnt mean you play him every game. I have been saying this since 2022, Shaheen cannot bowl in death overs, he gets wacked. Plus infielding he doesnt even dive.

The fielding was garbage. Taking sexy social media catches is not fielding. Getting direct throws on wixkets and diving to save boundaries and 2s and even ones is whag makes you look like a good fielder. Had our fielding been top notch, we could had defended 147 against Sri lanka.

Abbas Afeidi, Akif Javed, and Waseem jr are treated as third class minorities, only because they dont have the swagger that guys like shadab and shaheen have, so based on personality those guys dont get selected. Because skill wise they arebbetter than shaheen and rauf.

Had Arshdeep and Hardik been Pakistanis, they would had never made it to the national team, because our mindset is messed up. We look for glory balls, pace, but dont look at how players fulfill their role.

Arshdeep may not be as pacy, has a non threatning run up, but the guy is one of the top death bowlers and is better than Bumrah. Guy ended up bowlimg the best 19th over against the WI and was the main reason for India winning and qualifying.

Hardik Pandya has a different personality and bowls with no pace, but he uses his abilities the best way possible. Reminds me of our Roman Raees, but because of less pace, pakistani would be choosing rauf over him

Thats our mindset and that is why we lost and are out, and India has developed a proper squad

Usually I avoid blaming coaches, but this one is on Hesson.

The guy is addicted to all-rounders and doesn't realize Pakistan's cupboard only has bits and pieces players that pretend to be all-rounders. The fact he built an entire strategy around this is shocking and borderline ridiculous.

It's one thing to have access to NZ's all-rounders and another to have the below-par trio of Nawaz, Shadab, and Fahim.

Plus playing Babar for no reason when it's obvious he shouldn't be in the team was another blunder. Whether this is on him or the people above Hesson is a separate story but regardless it was another silly mistake.

The team already lacks quality and can't afford to play sub-optimal XIs.

Poor tactics and playing 11. They don't have skills to go all the way. But with advantage of playing in same grounds, they could have reached semis.

The issue is that when Pakistan lose a close game people will want a deeper batting .

If you play even four specialist bowlers then your tail will start at number 8 , and the kind of batting has , I do n ot need to say anything.

Pakistan needs 15 players to fulfill their dreams of

1) Modern unit of keep going harder
2) Team that can afford to collapse and keep going
3) 7 bowing options

..etc etc..

To fulfill this critera Hesson started using filler players. The funny thing is, after stuffing up the team with all-rounders, Pakistan suffered more collapses than with fewer batsmen. Because the quality of the players is such that they can collapse even if they are not "total mugs". Based on the evaluation, "Someone who is not totally mug with bat" is considered all rounders.

Take a look around. All teams have made some compromises. But nobody compromised on batting skills as much as pakistan.

I think their mistake was overdoing it.

If we look at the India match, these were the bowling options:

Shaheen
Abrar
Usman Tariq
Faheem
Shadab
Nawaz
Saim
Salman Agha (part-timer but still can bowl)

That's way too much. You never need that many bowlers. They were better off replacing 2 of those "all-rounders" with proper batsmen because the best teams in the world usually carry five bowling options and then a sixth as a fail-safe if someone has a bad day.

It became an even bigger issue considering one of their specialist batsmen (Babar) shouldn't even be in the team. Nawaz, Shadab, and Faheem are too inconsistent as batsmen to ever be seen as reliable depth, which is where the mistake was made and they paid for it.

The team is already weak, but the strategy was incorrect from day one.

Pakistan performance was at par with their abilities. They did fine. They came sixth and that is what their t20 ranking is. Stop this wrist slitting
Exactly, I was about to say this too- nobody can call this below par. They ended up where they truly are at this point in world cricket - below the big 3, NZ & SA; below par performance in this WC could only be from Australia.

Fans expectations were higher than they needed to be on the back of wins in T20 and ODI Cricket against the likes of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, South Africa C team, Australia C team.

The first step towards revival is for the PCB to ensure our players play consistently against the A sides of England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa at both home and in their respective countries and if it means offering to pay them higher amounts of money then so be it.

It shows that the standard of domestic T20 in Pakistan is bad.

There are just not enough good T20 players in Pakistan. They might have good test / odi players and capable bowlers (in certain conditions) but the other teams have hitters across their batting order. Pakistani batsmen are limited after Farhan and fakhar get out.

😂 Reports that the PCB has decided to punish every member of the team and fine every player Rs 5 million each for the poor performance during the T20 WC.

How is this fair on the likes of Sahibzada Farhan, Naseem Shah, Fakhar Zaman?

Is this a joke 🤣

Farhan Zaman Naseem what did they do wrong

So unprofessional board is ours

T20 World Cup flop Pakistan players fined
The Men in Green were below par in their recently concluded WC campaign

KARACHI:
Poor performance in the T20 World Cup has proven costly for Pakistani cricketers, as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has fined each player 5 million rupees.

In fact, the decision was made right after the defeat against India.

According to sources, officials have clearly told the players that enough pampering has been done — from now on, financial benefits will only come with performance.

According to details, Pakistan narrowly avoided defeat against the Netherlands in their opening match of the T20 World Cup, then defeated the USA. Given familiarity with Sri Lankan conditions and the presence of quality spin bowlers, better performance was expected against India, but as in three Asia Cup matches, the team failed again.

After defeating Namibia, Pakistan managed to reach the Super 8 stage. The match against New Zealand was washed out due to rain, and then they suffered defeat against England, making their semifinal qualification dependent on other results. England’s victory over New Zealand revived Pakistan’s hopes, but a narrow win against Sri Lanka failed to improve their run rate sufficiently. As a result, New Zealand also qualified for the semifinals, ending the Green Shirts’ campaign.

Like the fans, board officials are also highly displeased with the team’s performance. According to sources, each player has already been fined 5 million rupees. Officials made it clear that if players receive rewards for good performances, they must also pay penalties for poor ones. The team was informed of this decision immediately after losing to India.

It is worth noting that national cricketers currently earn millions annually. An A-category player receives a monthly salary of 4.5 million rupees plus 2.07 million rupees as a share from ICC revenue. B-category players receive 3 million rupees monthly and 1.5525 million rupees as ICC share. C-category players get 1 million rupees monthly and 1.035 million rupees ICC share. D-category players earn 750,000 rupees monthly and 517,500 rupees ICC share. Match fees are separate. In the central contracts from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026, no player was included in the A category.

Sources further said that the PCB introduced the auction model in the Pakistan Super League to ensure players’ financial stability. Opener Sahibzada Farhan had previously complained that he was not being paid fairly. Now star cricketers are receiving contracts worth millions, but their performance has not improved, which has displeased officials. In the ongoing World Cup, Sahibzada Farhan leads with 383 runs. Surprisingly, other top batters — Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Babar Azam, and Usman Khan — failed to score even 100 runs individually in the entire tournament.

Among bowlers, apart from spinner Usman Tariq, who took 10 wickets, others delivered only average performances. Currently, Mike Hesson holds significant influence over the national team. Captain Salman Ali Agha is reportedly kept at the forefront, while Shadab Khan is involved in decision-making and is considered close to Hesson due to his association with Islamabad United.

Before the event, Fakhar Zaman had already been informed that he would not be part of the playing XI in the initial matches, and he was not utilized properly. When Fakhar was finally given the opportunity to open against Sri Lanka, he scored 84 runs at a strike rate of 200, proving his effectiveness — but by then it was too late. Senior batter Babar Azam failed to meet expectations. Salman struggled badly as a batter, and questions were also raised about his decisions as captain. In the coming days, the PCB may take further strict decisions.

Other top teams pick a batsman with a minimum strike rate of over 120.Pakistan keep picking a man whose strike rate is below 100. He was dropped 4 games too late. Pakistan could have scored 200 against England if was not for the overated and over hyped Babar who has once again proven to be a minnow basher who cracks in pressure situations. (y)Fakhar came in 4 games too late. :(

Squad selection simple as that i could see it and I believe most of you guys as well only a fool would have backed this team to perform

LOL NO.
Fans want the right team selection, losing is not the point. How did Abrar bench and FZ only played 2 games and opened in only 1 game. While all the parchees kept playing!

I don't believe Pakistan under delivered.

They played to their level and were decent enough in super 8.

The main issue and it has been an issue for the a while now is the team selecting

The 15 players selected where the best 15 in Pakistan, some deserved to be in the squad but a good amount did not deserve to be there, followed by the bad team selection, you have to get you starting eleven correct (Pakistan had got it wrong since day 1 in this tourney) the only time they got it right was the last game

If you dont select your past 15 or past 11 than your asking for trouble and everything will crumble. We have seen this soo many times with Pakistan cricket.

Elephant in the room is , social media pressure n psl connections are unavoidable.

You can't drop few players because of xyz reazons.

It has become a vicious circle now

Thsi is one of those world cup you play very very less games against top teams. Mostly you would play against smaller teams. The few games you play against top teams more or less decides your fate. Format is like that in both rounds. In first round you play against one decent team at best. In the 2nd round without Australia in either group you just play too good teams. That's it. You lose you leave.

Selection, without any doubt, is the number one humdinger!

And, Pak do it all the time. From giving aged players a farewell, Wasim and Waqar in 2003 one example.

And, this time top of the list Babar Azam, and having done the unforgiveable, not selecting the right team on the day.

To be perfectly honest, going forward, no room for Babar, no room for Shaheen for a while; if you cant find a spinning all rounder, keep ONE of Shadab/Nawaz, until you find one.

And, now the middle order batting???
I HAVE NO IDEA!

Have to open with Farhan and Fakhar and keep Saim as understudy.

Salman, he won't survive, but Ill keep him.

As for rest of betting up to no 6, your guess is good as mine, EVERYONE HAS FAILED, but if you must, try youngsters and keep 'em!!!

Bowling is fine, no issues.

There is no 15 currently that would have made Pakistan win the World Cup.

You can shuffle, drop or blame whoever you want.

The sooner we realize that, the better.

I think Pak fans were a bit more hopeful due to nature of surfaces and team combination that is good for these surfaces.

Once upon a time when Pakistan was playing India or Sri Lanka there used to be fear in the players to face Pakistan Bowling that aura is dead now
Players used to fear raw pace those days. Now most players have already faced so much high pace before making an international debut. Players like pace on balls now as it is easy to score runs.

I voted for other reasons in poll....

Reasons

1. After Asia cup 0-3 loss to India, it was expected PCB to do major surgery on Pakistan team, but nothing have happened and entire focus shifted to the PCB chairman Naqvi who took Asia cup with him to Pakistan...Pakistan social media, news channels, ex-cricketers erupted with joy and everyone discussing about Naqvi's heroic rather than Pakistan team's pathetic performance.

2. Your ex-cricketer doing only discussions on discussions on Pakistan team's poor performance, but no one comes forward with solution. Some of pak ex-cricketers are on PCB's payroll... whenever Pakistan looses, they immediately accused India with cheating allegation to distract Pakistan peoples attention from Pakistan team's defeat

Seconded.

We should consider it a win if we ever make it to the semi finals.
