What were the main reasons behind Quetta Gladiators inability to reach play-offs in PSL 6?

This is what Sarfaraz Ahmed said last night when asked about this:

"The idea was to win the toss and get the opposition out on a low score; We felt that we didn't have a good start when we batted and due to that we could not make a comeback into the game"

"We were unable to make a good team combination in this tournament; Our foreign players could not be available for the whole of the tournament; As you know, Faf was unfit after the first game here, then Andre Russell came in for a short while, also Tom Banton and Chris Gayle just played 2 games so our combination never got going and due to that our team had problems during the tournament"

Their local batting talent is so poor and so reliant on being carried by the overseas players that, when those players are unavailable or out of form, the batting unit basically becomes club level.

I think he has a point about the overseas players but I've been quite disappointed with the local bowling too. Hasnain, Shinwari and Nawaz are players with international experience and on the fringes of national selection but they haven't demonstrated any intelligence and only performed once in a blue moon.

I also think Moin Khan has been badly exposed. I don't think he has the dynamicism required to be a head coach for a modern T20 outfit, which is actually quite surprising given how shrewd he was as a player. I think the Quetta gig is more a mechanism for him to get his son in the side.

Sarfraz is also past it unfortunately.

The one and only Mr. Captain of this team.He just makes his players uncomfortable it's not the right environment for any sports. That guy should be kicked out if Quetta wants to progress. This captain guy is harmful for his players.

Non professional staff Nepotism, Nepotism and incompetent leadership

Poor picks in the draft backed by poor team selections and lack of strategy, tactics on the field. Sarfaraz was a decent captain at one point of time but, his tactics and understanding of the game has taken a backseat over his anger, disappointment and frustration on the field. Everyone who plays cricket at this level has passion for the game and obviously enjoys playing it but, unfortunately for Sarfaraz it doesnt look like he is enjoying himself out there as QGÂ’s captain.

Saim Ayub is a decent young talent but there is no way in my opinion any team at the moment can go for him as the sole emerging batting in the T20 format over guys like Qasim Akram (On the bench of KK), Mohammad Haris (On the bench of KK) who both played the domestic season and were successful in the whiteball format in atleast one format. Even Mubashir Khan at this age with atleast some recent domestic experience behind him could have been a better option and like Qasim would have provided an off spin option to QG which they could have used against lefties.

Shinwari is the most experienced local bowler in the squad and anyone who has seen some cricket in recent times knows that he hasnt been that great at death so his handling has been poor as he was regularly bowled in last 3-4 overs in the 5 matches he was selected in. On top of that the only foreign pacer they selected in the second leg was Wildermauth, who was dropped after just one game so if one game changed QGÂ’s managementÂ’s thinking then why was he drafted in the first place?

QG went with 3 spinners and just two pacers in the 2nd match of Abu Dhabi leg which was completely opposite to what some other teams were doing and it was pretty poor team selection to say the least.

QG needs to come out of the limited talent pool they generally like to consider from players that have played for their club. They need to open their mind to new ideas and need to find some good local batsmen, they missed big opportunity to draft in couple of those this season itself who could have served them well going forward as well. However, they can still improve their side in the next draft if they can open themselves to new ideas like any professional team rather than trying to form just a closed knit unit of players known to then but, with lesser skills than some other sides. IU showed how you can form a closely knit team and environment even with players who dont necessarily belong to same local clubs.

They have a terrible team. Its really that simple. There's not a single reliable batsman or bowler in there.

Had badluck with international players and have the worst batting alongside Lahore

Sarfraz, as a platinum player was total waste. he is someone who pulled it back actually .... need to be replaced

were unlucky with injuries as well... Faf got injured, not that he was doing wonders but still

Russel got inured... Gayle left ..Tom Banton in platinum was a complete waste

bowling wasnt too bad... Khurram Shahzad was xciting find and rest were par .. but overall, it was just baaaad

but they have a blank slate now... get rid of all the players in their team and start fresh.

i think sarfraz will get 1 more nod (more bcz of favouritism rather than merit) ...Azam khan will b there but rest, they can practically make a new team

With Sarfaraz in the team you are playing with 10 players and even less than that if you take into account the negative impact his toxic captaincy has in the bowlers and fielders.

He as a batsman has zero impact, he can rarely hit at the death, is a consolidator at best and even then extremely unreliable with the bat. He is in a massive comfort zone as a player, captain with the QG Franchise Owner which is the biggest problem.

The batting was exceptionally poor as well. Can't win matches with such a hit and miss batting line up

What exactly was the point of picking Andre Russell and Fabien Allen when it was known that they would be called for international duties?

Overseas player availabilities were terrible for them. Faf injured, Russell injured, Gayle unavailable in UAE.

Naseem Shah mentally shot

Zahid Mahmood proving to be a rubbish bowler

Sarfaraz clueless about his own batting position

They were hoping Andre Russell would channel the mercenary in him to skip international duty like he did during the Sri Lanka premier league

Terrible captain making the team culture toxic and damn poor selections in the draft.

Well it seems that they are looking at the talent hunt option to find some gems:

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) Franchise Quetta Gladiators have named 53 players for the final trials of the Quetta Gladiators CM Balochistan Talent Hunt program to be conducted at Bugti Stadium in Quetta on November 27.

Former Test cricketer and Gladiators bowling coach Umar Gul headed the selection panel while other members included Sanaullah Baloch, Zafar Ahmad and Arbab Shakir.
Initially, the trials were conducted at three different venues which included Quetta, Naseerabad and Lasbela.

The players are requested to report the selection committee on Saturday at 9am while they can coordinate with Secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Govt of Balochistan Imran Gichki and Sardar Wali Coordinator QG in Quetta.

Afridi in Quetta - not sure if that is more of a sentimental thing or an actual need for the side to reach the play offs or even finals?
