What would be a fair score-line for the England versus India series (2021)?

While the final decision for fifth test is still to be out, what is the fair scoreline of the test series played between England and India?

Does a 2-1 India win looks a fair reading or should it be 2-2 considering the venue or India not able to be up for the test? Or did India dominated the series and deserved to go 3-1 at the end of the series?

Discuss!

India needed to score 157 more runs with their score in their second innings at 52/1. If rain hadn't washed out the last day, India probably would have won. So a 2-1 series result is fair. Not sure if the 5th Test will be played, there was some talk of rescheduling the Test.

The series is still incomplete so its premature to determine what the score is. Currently the score is 2-1 and will remain so until teh final match is played.

Considering India's dominant position in the rain-affected first test of the series, I think 2-1 reflects the reality where these two teams stand.

India was a better team this series in all departments. At the end of 4th test, India should have been leading 3-1 had the 1st test not being washed out by rain. So the Manchester (5th) test would have been basically a dead rubber.

I think 3-1 is the fair scoreline for the series as who knows what would have happened in final test with lots of rain around.

BTW, even I predicted 3-1 for India before the series (check prediction thread).

2-2
India forfeited the last match. If world cricket came together to award the Oval 2006 test to England (vs Pakistan), then this is the exact same situation. Might of BCCI should not change the rules.

India was clearly the better team. 2- 1 score is more than fair even if it flatters Eng given how Eng was outplayed in 3 out of 4 tests. It would be different if only one test was played, but here fans got 4 tests.

ECB has totally lost it by asking for a forfeit and forgetting that the world is in a little bit of trouble and covid is real. Eng needs to actually win some games.

The 4 match series finished 2-1 to India. Some DLS calculation isn't needed here, England weren't saving their quality for the final Test. Can't speculate on what could have happened.

The only fair outcome would be to play the last test match if not the series result should be declared draw as the series was not completed but that wont be a fair outcome for both sides. Both sides would have backed themselves to win the last test match.

The only fair outcome is to play the last test match the series was supposed to be 5 match series which was aborted once India went 2-1 up which is not fair on England. Both sides would have backed themselves to win. 2-2 was possible same as 3-1, England was denied the chance to draw the series by Indian refusal to play and Indian players didnt want 3-1. Even a 2-2 wont be a fair outcome.

Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman has opined that the International Cricket Council (ICC) should award the 5-match Test series 2-1 to India following the cancellation of the 5th Test.

Ever since the 5th Test between India and England was cancelled due to the Covid scare in the Team India camp, a lot has been said and written about the outcome of the series. Virat Kohli's men held a 2-1 lead in the series before the final Test was cancelled a day after India's physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar contracted the virus. Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman shared his views on why the International Cricket Council (ICC) should award the result of the series 2-1 in India's favour.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has agreed to play an additional Test along with the white-ball series when India tours England in 2022.

In his column for the Times of India, Laxman opined that following BCCI's solution to the problem, the ICC should award the series 2-1 in India's favour as keeping the Covid scare in mind, it wasn't in the best interest of the players and the officials to go ahead with the 5th Test.

"To take the field in that mental state is far from ideal. So is the potential risk of endangering others on the park, be it your teammates, the officials or the opponents. Against that backdrop, I think the cancellation of the Test was the right call, though I feel deeply for the fans who had invested so much time, money and emotion in the contest. I hope the ICC sees the situation for what it is and awards the series 2-1to India, particularly with the BCCI having offered to play a Test during their white ball tour of England next year," Laxman wrote.

Laxman also added that it was unfair to play the blame game as these are challenging times where the chances of the virus spreading further are very high if a member from within the bio-bubble.

"It was an abrupt, somewhat disappointing end to what had been a cracking series but given the circumstances in which the final Test at Old Trafford was cancelled, it's unfair to point fingers or play the blame game. More than a year and a half since the pandemic, the world is still far from a safe place. It might be tempting for many to see the Indian team as the villain of the piece, but I can say from our IPL experiences this summer that once any member of the team that you have been in close contact with tests positive, it is impossible not to be apprehensive, indeed fearful," Laxman added.

Most of the Indian players have now reached Abu Dhabi to feature in the second phase of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 which will kick off on September 19.

2-1 seems a fair result. We never know how the last match would have played out. India were clearly the better team and would have been 3-1 had it not been for the massive contributions from Joe Root who is easily the man of the series.

Overall it was an evenly contested series. I’d say 2-3 India as they seemed to win more of the big moments.

It is 2-1 for all purpose now and is a right result.
Infact it was very close to being 3-1 (1st test result rained off)

So yeah ECB suffering in their insurance claim (no fault of BCCI and to be fair why would anyinsurance company underwrite and accept a covid-19 risk in UK when there is no social distancing or mask or whatnots)

My sympathy to ECB suffering these losses and sympathy to test cricket lovers.
I am one of them and exactly for this reason I feel us cricket lovers should move on to the next series and let lawyers deal with the money part because for sure it is the loss of profit that ECB is more worried about.

Probably ECB would have pushed to continue the game had one of their players also tested positive.

yes ball tampering is same as covid

How do you know? Given that their tail started at #5?

I’d say India had 2/3 chance but we will never know.

Shardul Thakur was playing in that game, remember? So tail starts at #5 is an exaggeration.

India required 150 odd runs to get with 9 wickets in hand and with Lord Thakur to bat, should have been easy chase

The England and Wales Cricket Board will formally request that the world's governing body adjudicates on last week's abandoned Test match if a rearranged fixture cannot be agreed.

England's fifth and final Test against India at Emirates Old Trafford was called off just hours before the start of play on day one due to Covid-19 concerns in the tourists' camp.

Four members of India's support staff had tested positive but their withdrawal was met with some cynicism as the lucrative Indian Premier League is due to restart this Sunday.

ECB chief executive Tom Harrison dismissed suggestions the IPL had been prioritised over a prestigious Test match, rejecting the idea the fear of missing out on the T20 tournament had caused the disquiet among India's squad.

2-2
India were looking favorites to win at Nottingham.
Both Indian wins were closer games. England were still on top end of day 4 lords. And were looking to draw oval until lunch on the last day.
In contrast, India had one of their worst losses at headingly.

It was a very close series where both teams were neck in neck.
The series shows india are the best team because their bowlers know how to bowl on flat pitches.

England will probably win the possible scheduled test next year with stokes . But that's only because india won't practice and prepare for a one off test.

India was not clearly the better team, it was an evenly contested series, the upper hand was with India on the flatter tracks, and then swung in England's favour when conditions were better for seam bowling.

India played well compared to previous series, but they should have backed themselves to finish England on the field, not run off once they took the lead. Personally I think they have spoiled the series, and their own reputation with this action. It left a bitter taste in the mouth, and sadly it's a pretty fair representation of what India has become since they started throwing their weight around financially. Thank God they can't dominate any other sport like they do cricket.

Time for ICC to step up and show they’re not slapping puppets of bcci ad world thinks. As per Mcc rules this is a forfeit. Interesting to see if ICC bends over to bcci, or shows some integrity.

Not fielding A team is… not fielding a team

not fielding a team due to health concerns is quite different to throwing your toys out of pram about a decision which can be appealed after a match.

Oh yes

Not raising a team for health concerns but flying off to UAE to play IPL is also a safety precaution

yes where they are isolating and wont play till testing negative.

Definitely sensible

Hilarious how the actual English fans want the 5th Test to be played sometime later to have a fair outcome to a brilliant series and then we have desperate pak fans who're being begaani shaadi mein abdullah deewana, shouting "forfeit forfeit" from the top of their lungs since Friday.... :yk

Oh right

This isolation could not have happened in England. It could only take place in UAE 7 days before the IPL.

What's the point of staying in England when the tour is over?To play PUBG?

some Indians too,tbf :inti

If we look at the combined XI from the India-England series, it will be :-

Rohit
KL
Pujara
Root
Kohli
Pant(wkt)
Woakes
Thakur
Robinson
Bumrah
Anderson

Based on this XI from your ever so reliable and unbiased poster, it is pretty clear that there were 4 players from England and 7 from India that make it to the first side.

According to this, a fair scoreline for the series should read 3-2 or 2-1 in favour of India.

India were comfortably a better test team with better openers, better all-round fast bowlers, better all-rounders and also a better keeper batsman( who didn't had a good series with bat but was still the best glovesman in the series and averages higher with bat than other keepers when they kept gloves).

The middle order was weak for India but same was the case with England with the exception of Joe Root who carried his team and reminded the viewers a bit of Sachin Tendulkar of 90s, playing like a lone warrior.

All said and done, India thoroughly deserves to win this series while England might feel they had a chance to make a comeback and put a good performance in final test but deep down their fans know that it was a disappointing performance from them and not worthy of a scoreline in their favour.

One team seized big moments and came out ahead by some margin in 3 out of 4 tests.

2 test wins by 150+ runs. Dominating position in 1st test.

If a team comes out ahead by some margin in 3 out of 4 games, one team is simply the better team.

You think cricket fans (other than indians) are stupid? We can see india not fielding a team yet playing IPL. MCC rules indicate it is a forfeit. If you love cricket the game, and not just indian cricket, I expect you to understand. Otherwise, God help you!

ICC are BCCI puppets. We already know their decision won't be in line with the sanctity of the game.

Already crying?

The ICC dispute resolution committee, which will decide the fate of the Test is led by an Englishman,Michael Beloff.

How many IPL games have been played since the start of the Test?

You all are not stupid, just whiners.

Looks like if anyone says that the result should be 2-2, it is the indian fans that come out as whiners :)

Paid by his indian masters...today indians are ruling, tomorrow someone else would. We won't forget the strings BCCI pulls.

But why should we accept 2-2? Even if we give the last test to England, it should still be 3-2 in India's favour.

Nottingham - India should have won without rain

Lords - India won

Headingley - England won

Oval - India won

Manchester - Assume Eng win

So its still 3-2 in India's favour.

Because MCC rules that defines the rules in cricket state that this is a forfeit. If Pakistan is made to forfeit as per the same MCC rules, then india should too. No team is bigger than the game of cricket, and that includes india too. Follow the rules, and show integrity if BCCI is there for the interest of the game. Otherwise just invent their own rules and play their version of cricket in india, why even play with the rest of the world.

Exactly. That's what PCB did a decade ago when they refused to send our Players to IPL and apparently BCCI didn't forget

Well that's your interpretation of the rules and ICC agrees then ICC should have no issue declaring this as a forfeiture and awarding the test to England unless, both boards mutually agree to agree to a different outcome.

The scoreline reads 2-1 to India. Rest is just wishful thinking.

It was predicted to be 5-0 before the series by our neighbors, which did not materialize.

Series incomplete. We need the fifth Test next year before anyone can be sure.

India were clearly the better side at Lord's and the Oval, & England hammered them at Headingley. The first test at Trent Bridge could have gone either way if the fifth day hadn't been rained off. So a potential 2-2 result at the end of the day isn't completely unfair.

It's hard to not feel aggrieved and resentful that the series should have been completed if it wasn't for the IPL.

England won 3 out of 4 tosses and had the better of the conditions in nearly all the tests. Yet, after 4 tests, the scoreline stands at 2-1 in favour of India and it could easily have been 3-1 if not for the weather interruption at Nottingham. I would say the chances were 65-35 in favour of India at the end of the 4th day at Trent Bridge.

Funnily enough, the postponed test actually gives England the better chance of drawing the series as the weather forecast for the Manchester test was terrible and Lancashire had dry wickets that assisted turn in the previous matches in county championship this season. Based on what we have seen so far in this series alone though, a 2-2 scoreline would flatter England's performance in this series.

No team is bigger than the game of cricket is a very valid argument. Wonder how the ECB and BCCI lawyers can use this
