For some the answer would be simple but totally different from someone else's reaction!

Here is a story to consider but make sure you vote on the poll also

====

FAISALABAD: A retired Punjab police constable found more than Rs555 million in his bank account, he said on Wednesday, expressing bewilderment at the amount.

The retired constable, Arshad Mehmood, said he found Rs555,300,000 in his account when he checked the balance. "My pension is Rs25,000 per month, so I have no idea where the sum of millions of rupees came from?

"I only got to know about this huge sum of money when I checked the balance in my bank account through the ATM [automated teller machine]," Mehmood said.

The constable said he immediately informed the bank about his concern.

"The bank's management has withdrawn the additional money from my account," he added.

Depends on your circumstances and how desperate you are.

I would use some of it and then alert to authorities :danish

I probably won't touch it, because that person might be searching for his lost bag or wallet. Difficult question, I have been in such situations before but always less than Rs 500 and I moved on leaving it be. Maybe if it were a huge bag of cash or jewels, I would video record it and then alert the police as well as local media network and newspaper office. Wouldn't mind to see my photo and story in the newspaper next day, and who can blindly trust Chennai police?

If it were in wallet/purse with ID of the person I'd definitely contact him/her directly and hand it over. Prefer to deal with it myself rather than depending on police even if I have to make extra effort.

Don’t know what I’d do. But this man needs to be applauded for his honesty.

You get busted if you spend money accidentally deposited to your account.

Finding it on the street somewhere is a different matter. Nothing to trace you to it.

if there is id on it i will give it back

However, if there isnt then its finders keepers, because i dont trust charities - they just use the money to pay there employees high wages and ad spends, as for police in pakistan they will keep it themselves.

I've heard cases where people place the additional money in a high-interest savings account until the bank finds out. They keep the interest and return the money as soon as the bank contacts them (sometimes can take years).

They won't care about the interest as long as they get the principal amount.

Easy money.

Interesting replies - keep 'em coming guys and add votes also

I have found some notes on streets before. Not a huge some just Rs 100 or less. Most of the times I donate it to the poor, sometimes I ignored it. Never used it for myself.

If it was a huge sum of money then I will inform the authorities or ignore it all together, since such a huge some of money will most likely be tainted and knowing the police I don't want unnecessary hassles in life.

Wonder if the answers would change based upon the amount involved?

Dog eat dog world, you'd be a fool to accidentally leave a large sum of money on the street and expect me to give it back.

Always hand it into the police especially if you’re living in a country like England.

If there are details of the person then return it to the police. Otherwise keep it an donate some amount to charity

hmmm.. yea nah i would keep it. dog eat dog world as the person mention it above.

i would slowly just clean it and keep it.

also depends on how much is found. if its below $1000 better to just return it

but if its over $10,000 id keep it. no point returning it to the police its just gonna sit in the evidence locker and most likely get stolen by an officer.

Give it to the police no doubt about it. I have a very strong conscience that would not allow me to keep it. The guilt would eat away at me if I kept it. It could belong to a very poor person where as alhumdolillah I am wealthy! Just imagine the blessings given by the owner when it is returned to them so be the change that you want to see in society.

Meanwhile a Tamil couple is facing 3 year jail term after spending the money they received in their account and later not returning it to the Public Works Department, which deposited the money (40 lakhs) by mistake.

In the UK if you hand found cash to the police, it becomes yours if not claimed within a certain time. This is what I would do unless it's in the millions and then might as well keep it and go get a Buggati.

I have found cash a few times. Once a lady left around £300 in the cashpoint and just walked off. She was very happy when I tapped her on the shoulder and said I have some money for you.

It's a no brainer, I would go all out ! WOOO!

Same.

I can't take money like that. It would kill me inside.
