What's new

What's next for Shaheen Shah Afridi?

Shaheen needs time off. I am a big fan and firmly believe on talent and skill he is ahead of Bhumrah, Cummins, Rabada. Problem is the system that doesn't know how to manage players.
I'm not sure when Pakistani fans will snap out of their delusion. Shaheen was a good bowler before his injury, but even at his best, he was never on the same skill level as Bumrah, Cummins, Starc, or Rabada. Comparing him to them has never been justified.

Another day, another pathetic last over from shaheen... Against Kiwis in the 2rd t20 game.

He bowled good first 3 overs and then when needed the most, he ends up getting hammered

Shaheen's bowling is too predictable nowadays. He only bowls 1 length fuller one. No change.

This is annoying sometimes

He's extremely stubborn and does not want to get outside his comfort zone. Many bowling coaches have worked with him but he just does his own thing now and doesn't listen to feedback, instructions

LOL... Shaheen bowling fuller in opening overs, and bowling length in last overs... CRAZYYYY

All the major teams in the world have figured him out. He’s a one trick pony with no variations and a very low bowling IQ.

Haris Rauf on pure ability is more talented than him. His confidence has just been broken by Pakistani fans and ex cricketers constant whining.

Retire from international cricket..

Move to UK...get their passport..

Apply for IPL auctions.

Maybe Lucknow Super Giants will buy him for 60 Lakhs INR. :amir2

Back to FC and needs to play a full season and not get selected until he does, playing franchises around the world is not the substitute.

He also needs to be told that he isn't the "best new ball bowler" or the "best T20 bowler", whatever he believes about himself in his head in his delusions.

He has some talent but needs to work hard at it and the job of his PCB is to provide support while he works at it
If he puts his head down and works hard, no reason he can't be decent across all formats after a full season of FC.

If he keeps playing mindless franchises around the world, the day is not far when he won't even have that!

Premium bowler needs to be send back to domestic

Should not be selected until he regains back his form

I said years ago that afridi will go down the same route as Hassan Ali.

Will peak for a couple of years, believe in his own hype and then fizzle out.

Too emotional and lacks the mentality to be a top player

He lacks intelligence maybe because of no proper education also very stubborn don't want to take any advice from anyone

He is regressing at such a rate where it feels like this is permanent.

He isn't just a one trick pony, he feels like he's uninterested in playing international cricket.

I get the vibe he wanted to captain Pakistan & until he doesn't, he won't perform.

He needs to be discarded until he earns his return.

Hopefully international retirement and off to continue his struggles in league cricket.

You just can't keep on playing at this level when you are only good in your first couple of overs. He has to add variety in his bowling and needs to use his brain more rather than just going for pace all the time.

I was quite pleased to see his pace was up a couple of months ago. But there’s more to it. I just find it unbelievable that such a tall bowler extracts such little bounce from the wicket. That and his general just floaty deliveries.

He really needs to sit down and work with a proper bowling coach. Mostly to work on his mental aspect of bowling.

Although Babar has been mediocre lately but bad form of shaheen has impacted the Pakistan team more badly

Main thing these days Pakistani players are mostly villagers getting easily satisfied and not keen on learning and experimenting. They have an initial charm but once their technique is found out, they have nothing new to offer and become one trick poney. The Cricket is having a bit of IQ and charisma problem. The players of previous Pakistan generation that had long careers were brainy. Wasim, Akhtar, Waqar all were quite charismatic individuals. Now look at these dull personalities of Babar, Rizwan, Shaheen

He makes enough money to hire his own fitness and bowling coaches or even in short term contact someone like Ian Pont and pay to have a professional look at his issues.

Right now, he is not respecting the game and thinks that money will keep on coming, even if he is not careful his contracts will dry up!

His deterioration is alarming and least he should do is ignore Shahid Afridi and get professional help and sort this out

This is because he doesn’t have a high arm action.

Which ofc is a reflection of the state of the bowling coaches in Pakistan.

I did not particualry rate him even when he broke through and had initial success. To me he did not enough variety except for the yokers. He did not swing it much and his action is questionable.

He has been found by the analysts and don't think he has the willpower or skill to overcame that. Another Hassan Ali.

True - he always gave off that amareurish vibe to me. He got in to the international team as an amateur, and he never really mastered some of the basics of wrist position and working out different lengths and what is his actual stock delivery. For someone of his height, his stock delivery should have always been that in between short of a length delivery, not that Hollywood inswinging Yorker with the new ball.

He got away with it as his pace increased and had that extra “zip” everyone talks about. Since losing pace, he has done nothing to work on his game. He has yet to graduate from that amateurish style of bowling and amateurish mentality.

Shaheen when he first came into the team did not have an inswinger, he was bowling outswingers, across the right hander or short pitched stuff.

But since he developed the inswinger, he has become habitually addicted to it and has forgotten everything else. Now the entire world knows about his one trick which isn't working for him anymore

There must be something wrong with his bowling action, it just doesn't look like he can use his higth to get some real bounce. Man is almost 2 metres, but bowlers like Naseem Shah get's more bounce than him. Pity they didn't let Gillespie continue, otherwise he might have helped him. At the momemt he is just looking for swing bowling full without looking at how pitch reacts. Kuch tou hai jou theek nahi hai.

Shaheen should play for some 2nd grade T20 leagues for some time and should work on some business to support his family when he will not be needed by any franchise , which will be soon . His time as an international cricket has came and gone, should be dropped from all format .

His hunger to succeed have diminished since he became the damaad , peak Shaheen was 2021 where he was very awkward to face with his extra bounce I don’t know where that Shaheen went

Should actually join USA. Will make the first team and can get his revenge on Bobzy and co.

How is Shahid Afridi responsible for his decline in performance?
The post mentioned his inability to learn from mistakes, which I attributed to Shahid Afridi's typical behavior. That's why I brought up his current influence on Shaheen

I watched Shaheen bowl in the 4th T20 and to be perfectly honest he bowled a lot better then what his final figures suggest. He was trying very hard. I am not a bowling expert and the main issue with Shaheen might be his bowling length.

He’s lost his zip and zip has lot to do with you not focusing on your bowling fundamentals and technique like seam position , your wrist and other minor things in your bowling action zip and pace are not the same his pace might be up but zip is not there and that will come the more he bowls in a non pressure situation like county cricket or something

Definitely his feet are wide from his body and he is no idea where he is releasing the ball from, he is only aiming for the Yorker length. I can’t believe Aqib or Azhar are not working with him, being a left handed he is also too far from stumps when delivering the ball. This guy needs to stop and approach Wasim Akram for help spend couple months with him one on one and learn few things. He is all over the place, plus his pace dropped which is the big issue for him

He really is bowling too far away from the stumps. This is quite noticeable in 2020 vs today

Like I have always said, if Mir Hamza was given the same chances as Shaheen than we have may been provided with actual dividends. Instead we are stuck with an Ali Baba Rahat Ali and his partner in crime Noseam Shah

Shaheen Shah Afridi is in UK and seems to be gearing up for the next challenge

Shaheen thrilled to call the Gabba home in BBL

The BBL's top draft pick has reflected on his memories of the Gabba after being snapped up with pick No.1 in the draft

Pakistan superstar and Big Bash top draft pick Shaheen Afridi says he cannot wait to have Aussie fans cheer his name when he lines up for the Brisbane Heat this summer.

Shaheen could barely disguise his delight at being taken first by the Heat at last week's Big Bash Draft, knowing he will call the Gabba home.

"As a fast bowler, we always hear about Australia, and the fast wickets (and) for fast bowling, Gabba is the place to bowl," Shaheen told The Surge podcast.

"I already have a lot of memories of the Gabba. I have played international games there, and I remember that spell by Mitchell Johnson in 2013, that was a special one."

Shaheen may dream of replicating that in Heat teal this summer, but knows he also has plenty to learn from his new teammates.

The 25-year-old had a tough introduction to the Gabba six years ago in the first Test of the 2019-20 summer, when he was dismissed first ball by Mitchell Starc.

When he got the chance to bowl, he was regularly above 140kph but struggled to find the right length as he ran into a red-hot Aussie line-up.

It wasn't until his 32nd over of the innings that he found success with a wicket, then had two within four balls.

He also went wicketless in his sole white-ball international at the ground, a rain-affected match last November that became a seven-over slog per side.

Across 10 T20 Internationals, including the 2021 T20 World Cup, Afridi has 12 wickets at 21.83 and an economy of 7.66, and is looking forward in particular to drawing on the experience of fellow left-arm quick Spencer Johnson.

"For me, you are always learning and for me it is very exciting to meet the Heat bowlers and I will be learning a lot from them," Shaheen said of a potent Heat attack that also has Xavier Bartlett and Michael Neser in the stables.

But the flow of information will be two-way, with an influx of Pakistanis to this summer's KFC BBL|15 given their gap in the international schedule that has lined up with the Australian summer.

Headlined by Sydney Sixers recruit Babar Azam, the Pakistan contingent also includes Mohammad Rizwan and Hassan Khan at the Renegades, Shadab Khan at the Thunder, Hassan Ali at the Strikers and more familiar face Haris Rauf who returned to the Stars.

"Sometimes it is a bit tough (bowling to fellow Pakistan internationals) because I've bowled to them a lot of times before," Shaheen conceded. "They know about what I bowl, but also that I can know their strength and weaknesses.

"Australia has big grounds, the sixes are not as easy. Don't think it is flat wicket and you will always be happy with the pace."

I don’t understand Shaheen Afridi’s role as Pakistan’s premier pacer anymore—he skipped the South Africa Tests, wasn’t in the New Zealand ODIs, missed the Bangladesh T20s, and now sits out a series decider, with even rumours of being rested for the upcoming tri-series.

India’s Siraj plays all five Tests without fuss, yet our top four bowlers, Shaheen, Naseem, Abrar, and Sufyan, have never played together. What exactly are the selectors and management planning?

Shaheen needs to do a proper rehab before going full tilt at international level.

His pace has drastically gone down since his injury.

Shaheen Afridi reveals how Starc helped kickstart his career

Shaheen Afridi and Mitchell Starc have many similarities as the Pakistan quick reveals how the Australian helped shape his career.

Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has revealed the impact fellow left-arm quick Mitchell Starc has had on his international career.

Starc has been one of the premier fast bowlers since he made his international debut back in 2010 and the Australian pacer only recently overtook Pakistan great Wasim Akram for the most Test wickets by left-arm quicks.

While Afridi has some way to go to reach the heights of his more experienced left-armers, the Pakistan quick said both players had had a major impact on his career so far and even looked back at the magnificent ICC Men's Cricket World Cup campaign that Starc produced on home soil in 2015 when he finished as the equal leading wicket-taker in the trophy-winning side.

Afridi said he was touring with an junior Pakistan side at the time and watching Starc at the peak of his powers had helped him learn the nuances of being a quality fast bowler.

“He’s a legend,” Afridi said of Starc ahead of his first match in Australia's domestic Big Bash T20 competition.

“When ‘Starcy’ played that 2015 World Cup, I was playing for the Under 16 Pakistan team at that time, so...I followed him to try to bowl many times the way he swung the ball.

“He bowled a fuller ball throughout that World Cup and had very good success."

Starc has been one of Australia's best performers through the first two matches of the ongoing Ashes series against England, with the 35-year-old having collected 18 wickets and two Player of the Match awards as the Aussies opened up a 2-0 series lead.

Afridi has been keeping a close eye on Starc's efforts throughout his career and alway makes an effort to speak with the Australian when their paths meet at international level.

“The last time we chatted, I told him that I watched him (in 2015) … and that’s why I bowl fuller to batters," Afridi continued.

"I can say he's a role model for any youngster... he's been the best for Australia for many years."

Joining The Surge, Big Bash Podcast to discuss his signing with the Brisbane Heat, Afridi is pumped to be playing against some of his national side's finest talent.

"We have been playing for the same team for seven or eight years," Afridi, the captain of Pakistan's ODI team said.

They have played more than me for Pakistan, but then we've played each other in our Pakistan Super League, and now it's again an opportunity for different teams to be playing against each other.

"It will be more exciting here. I hope the ball helps us more, not like in Pakistan with flat wickets! We will be enjoying it here. It'll be exciting playing against each other."

"I don't want to say that!," he chuckled when asked how he might try to limit Babar's flow.

"Babar is a world class player, no doubt about that, and he had a lot of runs for Pakistan for many years.

"My plan will be simple: Use the Australian wickets."

"Rizi is different (to Babar)," Afridi continued.

"He likes pace on the ball. They are both are world class players and have been like a backbone for Pakistan cricket for many years, and they're still in that position now.

"I'm looking forward to that challenge, actually. They know me as well. I have bowled to him (Rizwan) in the nets, so they know how they play me and how I bowl to them

We'll be excited about that challenge because we are playing each other more so they will 100% have a plan against me, and I will be the same."

We three, we're always in the nets. It's like a game, not just a net."

Why has he bowled so late?

He isn't that good at the end overs but lethal at the start.

Seems like very bad decision making.
Pakistanis will find it hard to understand that things which work for players like Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen do not necessarily work out for the greater interest of teams who want to achieve big.

Your premier overseas Seam bowler should have no excuse and be able to deliver an over at any crucial stage.

If you want to achieve big you bowl Shaheen upfront.

He ain't a death bowler, no matter what.

Yeah he shouldn't be getting tonked, and must do better than this, but his uselessness at the death should be well established by now.

His situation is different to Babar and Rizwan in that he can be a match winner.

It is like signing up Chris Gayle back in the day but batting him at 7.

By this logic,

Sixers and Renegades should open with Babar and Rizwan, and let them bat however they want and and whatever pace they want. That’s what makes them successful for themselves and that’s how they get the best out of themselves.

That’s a fair compromise? Self over team?

They are platinum signings, the team has to look up to them.

They're stupid if they think after signing them. They will somehow play a different role than their usual self. Their comfort role is anchoring as an opener at their own pace

Really poor scouting and raises serious question marks on the backdoor negotiations

There are far superior Australian batters (maybe 40-50 of them) than RizBar in these conditions. Why are they getting paid peanuts whilst RizBar are being paid top dollar?

Although I think Rizwan is getting paid nothing, I think he was picked in CPL and Big Bash on a very low (undisclosed) contract fee and it’s the agent begging to keep him in the limelight considering he was clearly written off by Hesson and Aqib.

Indeed. I would understand if they were playing in subcontinent. But there, specially given the downfall of RizBar as T20 players. Definitely there were better players

You are making unnecessary groupings of the Pakistani players as a collective.

As a team captain of a T20 franchise, do you bowl Shaheen up front or at the death? Bowling him mainly upfront isn't self over team, its putting the team first as it is well established now in cricket that he becomes half the bowler at the death. He ain't a death bowler. You gotta try to squeeze three out of him at the start.

Rizwan and Babar have nothing to do with where Shaheen bowls. They are separate issues.

This whole BBL season is becoming a national disgrace for Pakistan.

Even Rauf fared better in his first season. In fact more than “fared better”, he did really well.

Dont think it would have made much difference. He didn't look threatening in the first over either.

But it's great atleast they will now try to adapt to different conditions than their usual one dimensional game

Yea let’s see if they do. Highly doubt it. All 3 are very stubborn individuals. If they wanted to add dimensions, they’ve had enough exposure over the years to do so.
