What's new

What's next for Shaheen Shah Afridi?

Dont think it would have made much difference. He didn't look threatening in the first over either.
Maybe not.

But it seems like BBL teams have selected him based on hype rather than what he can actually do.

His whole shtick is swinging the new ball back into the right hander.

His current bowling rythem and run up reminds me of the 18 year old Shaheen who burst on new to the men's cricket scene. As a batter you just look at these small mis-alignments in rhythm during run ups and know its not going to be threatening.

PS vs BH: BBL' premium signing bagged just 1 wkt giving away 49 runs at an economy of 12.25 in 4 overs...

Million catches dropped of same batsman who scored against him...what bowler do? That too in power surge..... look at last over dropped boundary dropped boundary.....

yes.
The figures do an injustice to the way Shaheen Afridi bowled today.

At least three catches were dropped of his bowling before he was taken for 22 runs in his last over.

Shaheen Afridi is not a special talent but a decent bowler who will bowl some good spells in his career..he is more like Ashish Nehra or Zaheer Khan mode of bowlers. He is no where close to Wasim or Waqar type of bowler.. pakistani fan should accept this fact and lower their expectations from him..

Dont you think he was overloaded at times and mismanaged too which affected his performances in peak years of his career?

Afridi’s BBL Stint Cut Short

The Brisbane Heat have confirmed that Pakistan paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi will return home due to a knee injury.

Afridi suffered a knee cartilage injury while fielding in the Heat’s final over win over the Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba on Saturday night.

After consulting with the Pakistan Cricket Board’s medical staff during the past 24 hours, it was agreed that Afridi would cut short his KFC Big Bash League stint to return home for further treatment ahead of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

Afridi told his Heat teammates tonight that he was saddened his initial Big Bash stint was ending prematurely.

“I have enjoyed myself a lot playing for Brisbane and I am sad that I will not be able to finish the season with the team.”

“I am massively thankful to the Heat fans for showering me with immense love and support. I am also grateful for the support of the team and their amazing hospitality.

“The BBL was everything I had heard it would be – lots of good, skilful cricket. I have enjoyed the challenge.”

“I will be cheering for the team while recovering from my unexpected injury and I hope our paths cross again,” he said.

Brisbane Heat CEO Terry Svenson said the club thanked Afridi for his commitment to the Heat.

“Despite his season not finishing the way he would have liked, he has been a thorough professional and we have been pleased to welcome him to Brisbane and the Heat,’’ he said.

“I know our young bowlers in the squad have benefitted greatly from his advice and suggestions, and he has had strong input into the team’s performances overall.”

“We wish him a speedy recovery and all the best in his preparations now for the T20 World Cup.”

Svenson said the club were investigating options to replace Afridi for the remainder of the competition.

Acting Heat captain Xavier Bartlett said Afridi had been an excellent teammate.

“The conversations that I and the other bowlers have had with Shaheen about bowling and match situations have been great value. He fitted in very easily into the squad and it was a pleasure to have played alongside him.”

I think we have to move on from Shaheen. Knee injuries and especially recurring ones, don’t tend to go away easily and it is very difficult to get back to full pace.

Shaheen’s bowling style is only effective when he’s operating at 140+. Below that, even with any swing he gets, is pretty harmless and quite a tasty bowler to face for the best in the world.

Since he has not shown any desire or ability to modify his bowling style to a “hit the deck” type bowler using his height, I really don’t see how he can trouble the best in the world. He can maybe come back as a 3rd / 4th allrounder seamer, for certain conditions, but I don’t see anything beyond that.

I know people will point out Mitchell Starc as a tall bowler who relies on swing, but Starc is a beast. He’s still at 35, quicker than Shaheen was at his peak. The man was still hitting 147k in the last test match! Shaheen never was and never will be at Starc level.

Starc plays in favourable conditions. Let him bowl on the graveyards that Shaheen does and we will see how fast he bowls in that heat and those conditions. Don't criticize our players just because you want to big up foreigners.

live in the real world mate - back in the day I would never say anything like I have now, but the reality is the reality.

Shaheen couldn’t bowl Starc’s pace even if he tried. Shaheen’s pace is down because he simply no longer has the ability to bowl fast. It’s not simply down to conditions.

Shaheen doesn't bowl at all!

Hasn't played a single test, in and out of ODI and T20I and barely shows up in Franchise Cricket and can't bowl 4 decent overs for his Franchise.

Time to move on from this "Drama Queen" unless he gets serious about his bowling and actually puts in the effort for Pakistan.

Can't just mooch off the political connections of his father-in-law.

His main decline has been in Tests. His numbers have been quite high in this format especially.

Pre injury he averaged 24.86, consistently bowled 145kph+ along with letal yorkers and economy rate of 3.04.

Post injury he averaged 40.86 taking 16 wickets in 10 inns. Also his economy rate went up to 3.44.

Pace; 130-135kph; relying on variations rather than raw pace/swing.

As for the white ball side of things he's averaged over 39 this year alongside his economy rates being higher than his pre injury times.

Personally, I think Pakistan’s biggest issue isn’t talent but it’s rehab and post-injury management, and Shaheen is being the latest one.

That knee injury did real damage and again it's another one. The run-up is shorter, the action looks guarded, and he’s no longer exploding through the crease. For a left-arm quick, that front knee is everything. Once it goes, you lose momentum, wrist position, and ultimately the natural swing and shape he used to get so effortlessly.

Pre-injury Shaheen didn’t need variations or tricks. The ball swung late because his body allowed it to. Now he’s bowling far more off the arm, relying on cutters and cross-seam, which tells you the rhythm and confidence just aren’t the same.

Everything hinges on his return from this knee injury, but with a T20 World Cup around the corner, rushed rehab feels inevitable and we’ve seen how that story usually ends.

If pcb knew about Shaheen's potential injury concern, then why did they make him ODI captain in the first place and made him play 5 useless ODIs and then they sent him to BBL where he is even struggling to bowl 4 overs...

Reality is Shaheen has declined from 100 to 50 now... He is just like any other normal bowler from Pakistan but he is made of glass... he gets injured most of the time at crunch moments.

On talent Shaheen is better than Starc. Starc will of course have a better career because of inept PCB management. Same reason why tullar like Pant turned out with better numbers and stats than Rizwan in test cricket.
