As we approach Pakistan's 400th Test match, what do you think is Pakistan's greatest Test XI?

So many legends, so many match-winners, so many greats, so much talent, but who would make your all-time greatest eleven?

Sarfraz is no doubt a gem player but that team needs safe hands (Latif, Bari) more thn a wk who is decent enough with bat.

He's good enough.

Are you picking him on keeping skills alone or giving him the advantage of batting? Because that team already have a very very strong batting line so they need safe hands and IMO sarf isn't even in top 3 from pak when it comes to safe hands.

I will drop number 6 from your list and add another bowler if i have to pick Sarf as WK. (Imran and Wasim are good enough with bat so we don't need a very long batting line)

WK batsman.

Imran, Wasim and Waqar what do they remind you of ? Stumps getting shattered - Imran's booming inswinger and the 2W's lethal reverse swing meant that the keeper wasn't as involved in the dismissals and besides Sarfraz's infrequent lapses in concentration, the trio would easily do enough to dismiss swiftly - chances dropped or not dropped. Also, which other WK candidate has the ability to play the type of match winning innings that Sarfraz did vs SL in the first Test of the 2015 SL series ?

3 genuine fast bowlers, 1 leggi, 1 mystry offie... 6 solid test class batsmen and an additional solid batsman (Wasim) and decent tail, we all know Saqqi and Qadir can bat decent. a team to play anywhere in the world

With that attack you don't need a 5th bowler.

I went for Saqlain over Qadir because Qadir's record, despite his aura and great variations, doesn't stand up well outside of Pakistan.

Any team that doesn't have a proven world-class wicket keeper has my veto! Players like Kamran Akmal & Sarfaraz Ahmad fall under this category. The best 3 wicketkeepers to have played for Pak are probably Wasim Bari, Rashid Latif & Moin Khan. So any of these 3 is acceptable, but definitely not any keeper after Moin. Moin himself could be sketch. The battle is really between Rashid & Bari.

With such heavy batting lineups (and assuming all the batsmen in their peaks) and Imran as an obvious allrounder if coming at 7, we really not need batsmen keepers. And yeah has to be Bari or Rashid.

The best Pakistani batsman? It's between Younis and Javed Miandad.

So leaving Younis as so many have done is not fair. He is better then the likes of Zaheer Abbas, Inzy, Moyo etc.

Probably the worst keeper to play tests for us. Decent bat though.

Chappell hailed him as the next Gilchrist as did Healy.

Kami from 2004 to 2009 easily makes Pak's all time best xi. Better bat than Bari Moen Rashid and others and bettwr gloveman than Moeen and as good as Rashid.

Could've been best ever but he didnt want it.

Mushtaq Mohd was a very good all rounder. You get leggie and a very good batsman. To complement him, I picked Saqlain. So you get an offie as well. Add IK, Wasim and Waqar in mix. You got all corners covered here in bowling unit. Pakistan batting is not super strong so having Mushtaq Mohd makes the batting stronger as well. Honestly speaking, he was under-bowled. By all accounts, he was a gun leggie.

Batsment pretty much self pick themselves. Some fans can argue about Zaheer, but he was sitting ducks against genuine pace so I will keep him out. I picked the best gloves man I can think and Pakistan has produced pretty bad ones in recent decades.

Mushtaq Mohammad was an off spinner. I think you are mixing him up with Mushtaq Ahmed who was a leg spinner.

I haven't watched him bowl and just going by what I remember reading. Did Pakistan had more than one Mushtaq Mohd? I just looked and see,

----------
Mushtaq was a more than handy leg-spinner. In fact, it won’t be an over-statement if he is called as a proper all-rounder.

http://www.cricketcountry.com/cricl...e-best-fielders-pakistan-ever-produced-510261

-------------

I see many references of him being a right-handed batsman and a leg-spinner. Am I missing something ?

Moin was not a better keeper than Sarfraz. Latif and Bari were definitely better keepers but tailender batsmen.

In my view Moin was a better keeper than Sarfaraz. Plus, I mention in my post that the battle is betewen Bari & Latif. It doesn't matter that they are tailenders with the bat... the wicket keeper position has to be viewed as a specialist position first and foremost! It's the same as picking a bowler because he could bat a bit, or picking a batsman who can bowl a bit. This is especially true in test cricket.. very few all-rounders have been successful without being world-class in at least one discipline. Sarfaraz for example, is world-class in neither wicket-keeping, nor batting. That's the reason Latif & Bari are ahead of him.

Interesting to see so many people including Saqlain in the Test XI. He was great in odi's but surely Qadir's impact was greater in tests.

agree on 10/11 names.. closest to what i had but would doubt on Fazal.. not that he wasnt a great but thinking that we r going with 4 seamers and 1 leggi , y not 3 seamers and 2 spinners.. would actually give us the greatest edge, given that Imran was a genuine out an out pace bowler not a medium pacer like kapil (no offense) ...
so replace Fazal with Saqlain

It happens some time.

He is underrated by Pakistani fans in general. I hardly hear his name in PP, but he is rated high by neutrals who have seen him bat and bowl.

8. Wasim Akram

11. Fazal Mahmood

Hanif muhammad was also a keper i thought. So i'll go with this lineup

1.Hanif
2.Anwar
3. YK
4.Javed
5.Inzamam
6.MoYo
7.Imran
8.Wasim
9.Waqar
10.Fazal
11.Shoaib/Saqi/Mushy(depending on conditions)

That's a very strong team imo. Decent batting upto 8 and 5 genuine bowlers.

Pakistan has produced some brilliant all-condition players but we've also produced some cricketers who were good in particular conditions. Ijaz Ahmed was a beast in Australia for example and Mudassar Nazar was an England specialist. Zaheer Abbas could play spinners and trundlers with one arm tied behind his back while Azhar Mehmood for a while loved playing against the proteas home and away.

This would be my pool of players and you could select any 11 based on the underlying conditions. Best player first (left to right in descending order)

The Openers: Hanif Muhammad, Saeed Anwar, Majid Khan, Mudassar Nazar, Shoaib Muhammad, Amir Sohail

The Middle Order: Javed Miandad, Younus Khan, Inzimam-ul-Haq, Muhammad Yousuf, Mushtaq Muhammad, Zaheer Abbas, Asif Iqbal, Salim Malik, Ijaz Ahmed, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq

The Wicket keeper: Rashid Latif, Salim Yousuf, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Wasim Bari, Anil Dilpat

The Lower Middle order: Imran Khan, Wasim Raja, Intikhab Alam, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood

The Fast Bowlers: Wasim Akram, Waqar Younus, Khan Muhammad, Fazal Mahmood, Sarfaraz Nawaz, Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Zahid, Muhammad Asif, Muhammad Amir

The spinners: Abdul Qadir, Mushtaq Ahmed, Iqbal Qasim, Saqlain Mushtaq, Tauseef Ahmed, Intikhab Alam, Danish Kaneria, Yasir Shah.

*1. I've not selected Saeed Ajmal and Shabbir Ahmed because their actions were deemed illegal.

*2. The players are listed in terms of descending order with best players being placed first. However based on the conditions and country we are playing in, a replacement can be put into place. Some of the young guns feature because of their potential.

*3. Moeen and Kamran were both terrible keepers. Even Sarfaraz so far has a very high ratio of dropped catches however his batting is actually test class. Imtiaz Ahmed misses out sadly.

*4. Wanted to select Miran Buksh and Wallis Mithais just because I love their names and have read so much about their careers in Akhbar-e-Watan and the Cricketer magazine.

*5. Zulfiqar Ahmed who played in only 9 tests between 1952-56 happens to be our best statistical all-rounder with at least 5 games. Bat avg 33, bowl avg 18. Wonder why he only played 9 tests.

*6. Shahid Afridi makes it to the list sadly but he won't be selected in any 11 unless it's 99' and we are playing against India. Statistically, he'll reach the top echelon of our test cricket (37 bat avg, 35 bowl avg)

*7. Mushtaq Muhammad happens to be the most underrated player in my opinion. Champion all-rounder, amazing captain, and someone who took our team out of the abyss that we were in. I'd select him and even be tempted to make him the captain as Imran was an apprentice of this great man. Imran eclipsed him as a leader of men but I'd say the peak Imran will still be able to respect our forgotten cricketing hero.

My all-time favorite test team for maybe an Australian tour

1. Saeed Anwar
2. Hanif Muhammad
3. Younis Khan
4. Javed Miandad
5. Inzamam-ul-Haq
6. Mushtaq Muhammad (Captain)
7. Imran Khan
8. Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk)
9. Wasim Akram
a. Waqar Younis
b. Shoaib Akhtar

Mushtaq Ahmed could spin it if needed and extreme pace for the Aussies to enjoy. Let's just hope we win the toss and not have to bat last day.

It'll also be an interesting exercise to possibly make the worst Pakistani team that has some substantial test caps between them and not just one test or 5 test wonders.
