Pakistan has produced some brilliant all-condition players but we've also produced some cricketers who were good in particular conditions. Ijaz Ahmed was a beast in Australia for example and Mudassar Nazar was an England specialist. Zaheer Abbas could play spinners and trundlers with one arm tied behind his back while Azhar Mehmood for a while loved playing against the proteas home and away.
This would be my pool of players and you could select any 11 based on the underlying conditions. Best player first (left to right in descending order)
The Openers: Hanif Muhammad, Saeed Anwar, Majid Khan, Mudassar Nazar, Shoaib Muhammad, Amir Sohail
The Middle Order: Javed Miandad, Younus Khan, Inzimam-ul-Haq, Muhammad Yousuf, Mushtaq Muhammad, Zaheer Abbas, Asif Iqbal, Salim Malik, Ijaz Ahmed, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq
The Wicket keeper: Rashid Latif, Salim Yousuf, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Wasim Bari, Anil Dilpat
The Lower Middle order: Imran Khan, Wasim Raja, Intikhab Alam, Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Azhar Mahmood
The Fast Bowlers: Wasim Akram, Waqar Younus, Khan Muhammad, Fazal Mahmood, Sarfaraz Nawaz, Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Zahid, Muhammad Asif, Muhammad Amir
The spinners: Abdul Qadir, Mushtaq Ahmed, Iqbal Qasim, Saqlain Mushtaq, Tauseef Ahmed, Intikhab Alam, Danish Kaneria, Yasir Shah.
*1. I've not selected Saeed Ajmal and Shabbir Ahmed because their actions were deemed illegal.
*2. The players are listed in terms of descending order with best players being placed first. However based on the conditions and country we are playing in, a replacement can be put into place. Some of the young guns feature because of their potential.
*3. Moeen and Kamran were both terrible keepers. Even Sarfaraz so far has a very high ratio of dropped catches however his batting is actually test class. Imtiaz Ahmed misses out sadly.
*4. Wanted to select Miran Buksh and Wallis Mithais just because I love their names and have read so much about their careers in Akhbar-e-Watan and the Cricketer magazine.
*5. Zulfiqar Ahmed who played in only 9 tests between 1952-56 happens to be our best statistical all-rounder with at least 5 games. Bat avg 33, bowl avg 18. Wonder why he only played 9 tests.
*6. Shahid Afridi makes it to the list sadly but he won't be selected in any 11 unless it's 99' and we are playing against India. Statistically, he'll reach the top echelon of our test cricket (37 bat avg, 35 bowl avg)
*7. Mushtaq Muhammad happens to be the most underrated player in my opinion. Champion all-rounder, amazing captain, and someone who took our team out of the abyss that we were in. I'd select him and even be tempted to make him the captain as Imran was an apprentice of this great man. Imran eclipsed him as a leader of men but I'd say the peak Imran will still be able to respect our forgotten cricketing hero.
My all-time favorite test team for maybe an Australian tour
1. Saeed Anwar
2. Hanif Muhammad
3. Younis Khan
4. Javed Miandad
5. Inzamam-ul-Haq
6. Mushtaq Muhammad (Captain)
7. Imran Khan
8. Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk)
9. Wasim Akram
a. Waqar Younis
b. Shoaib Akhtar
Mushtaq Ahmed could spin it if needed and extreme pace for the Aussies to enjoy. Let's just hope we win the toss and not have to bat last day.
It'll also be an interesting exercise to possibly make the worst Pakistani team that has some substantial test caps between them and not just one test or 5 test wonders.
Misbah-ul-Haq. Wonder how I missed him. Slots in between Salim Malik and Ijaz Ahmed.
