KARACHI: Out-of-favour Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal has admitted that it was his fault and no one else’s that he failed his fitness tests and was excluded from the ODI squad for the ongoing 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales.

The 27-year-old middle-order batsman was cut out from the side after his fitness levels were deemed below-par twice in the span of two months, leaving the selectors with no choice but to replace him with all-rounder Haris Sohail.

Akmal, however, has now owned up to his mistake and revealed that in order to rectify it he has been working on his fitness diligently.

“Since returning from England, I have been training and working hard at National Cricket Academy (NCA) on my fitness with coaches and nutritionist there,” Akmal, who is in Karachi to play Ramadan cricket for Dollar East, told The Express Tribune.

About his failed fitness tests, he said: “When a player fails a fitness test it’s always his own fault. The board and the management are doing a great job keeping fitness their main priority, and it has been made clear that a player can be a part of the national team only if he is fully fit.”

This policy of the selectors, Akmal claims, has now been taken to heart by him, and it will show in his fitness levels in future.

“The board had made its guidelines about fitness very clear and every player knows that he has to follow them,” said Akmal. “But if he fails then he has to live with the consequences. I have been working hard and there has been an improvement in my fitness and I am trying all I can to make a comeback in the national team.”

He further said that playing the Ramadan tournament is another way to boost his fitness. “Ramzan cricket is quite different and demands its players to be very fit as sometimes you have to play in the heat and while fasting,” he said. “My aim is to gain maximum fitness in this tournament and be back in the national fold before the next series.”

Well, that's a good sign Umar. Get in shape, pass the fitness tests and dominate the FC scene.

Then and only then you deserve to represent the Pak XI.

Is this news?? A player does what he is supposed to do at international level and this makes it in the news.

Maturity, but I still see double chins on his twitter TL.

I don't think that there is a place for him even in the squad anymore - give more young players a chance - the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Harris Sohail, Fawad Alam deserve it more than he does.

Umar Akmal is realizing that with the new juniors performing admirably, the Pakistan team may not need him anymore so now he is backtracking and admitting his mistakes.

I have to give him credit where credit is due. An average guy give such a statement would not have been such a big deal. But since it's Umar Akmal it's good to see that he is at least willing to take the first step which is to admit his own failures.

Pakistani players can talk a lot and know how to use the right words, hence I am still going to take his statement with a grain of salt and not pin any hopes on his grand comeback.

its mean you stopped drinking water . because of RAMADAN :))). RAMADAN U akmal ke liye Extra blessing le ke aaya hai

Leave and never return. Never want to see him in a Pakistan kit again, there's no need for him. If this CT has taught us anything it's that investing in youth will lead to success. Stop wasting time on him

The problem with Umar is his over all non-seriousness attitude towards cricket. No one can play him when he himself does not want to.

Lol, Umar Akmal falling into line now after Arthur has made it clear to him there will be no more shortcuts into the team and also after realizing he is no longer an automatic selection given how the youngsters are performing in the team.

Hiring a famous, professional personal trainer and consulting a top of the line nutritionist should do wonders for Umar Akmal. It is expensive for the average person. The best trainers and nutritionists out there can lead to a combined cost of around Rs. 100,000 - 200,000 but that is peanuts for a professional sportsman like Umar Akmal.

It is beyond why he hasn't done this already. Maybe he just doesn't have the intent.

I hope umar read this.

"You are finished as a cricketer. There are endless opportunities for you in the pakistani entertainment media. You might find yourself useful there.
As far as pakistan cricket concerns, we have way way better replacements who are honest and hard working athletes. Please do yourself a favour and stay out."
Thanks

Hopefully he will back as strong and fitter cricketer. He is much better than hafeez shehzad azhar and shoaib. He still has a role to play in the team.

Fitness is not the only thing he needs to work on.

Bring him back once he prioritises f/c cricket over t20 leagues.
