What I understand (can't prove, so don't catch me on that) - there was a major debate in Indian team regarding toss. I am certain that Kumble with so many years of experience of being 2nd best in IND-PAK clash (and winning mostly batting first), would never like to chase in a major final; while VK is from recent generation, which enjoyed an upper hand as such, he was instrumental in putting PAK to bat first, on what was a batting belter, on a sunny London morning. On top of that, his team selection (bowling) was favouring "score board pressure" strategy - that's batting heavy with 2 spinners, couple of all-rounders & Bumrah - only BK was the bowler for a bowling first strategy & he didn't disappoint.
I feel, Kohli over ruled many others in this regard - once the proceedings went out of his plot, he & his bowlers simply lost in the contest. It probably started from Ashwin, who bowled much, much worse than his stats to a lefti & Jadeja will always struggle if batting side has a good start at the top. And, Indian team gave lots of extra, probably almost 3 overs - most of those in early stages, which helped PAK to maintain a RR over 5.5 all through, despite openers batting at around 75 SR. By the 20th overs, I believe Kohli went into complete damage control mood, which will never work against a team that has one attacking player going great, after a 100+ opening partnership. His last nail was hammered by Babar, who took the advantage of 5.7+ on going runrate to ensure that there was no back to back wicket, only which could have lifted Indian moral.
I believe, Kumble is going to lose his job & going forward, Kohli won't put PAK into bat again, unless it's a heavily bowl first wicket.
