Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels that the Rohit Sharma-led side shouldn’t only look to survive against Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi, but they should also need to see a way to score runs against him.

Afridi was the star performer for Pakistan when they had defeated India by ten wickets in their 2021 T20 World Cup tournament opener in Dubai, picking 3/31 in his four overs and taking out the top three of Rohit Sharma, K.L Rahul and Virat Kohli.

Now with his availability being confirmed for the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia after completing his recovery from a right knee injury, India will undoubtedly face a huge challenge from Afridi when the two teams open their Super 12 campaign in a high-octane clash at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on October 23.

“When it comes to Shaheen Afridi, don’t look to survive. Look to score runs from him. Because the moment you look to survive, everything becomes really small. Whether it’s your backlift, whether it’s your footwork, and obviously, in T20 cricket you can’t look to survive.”

“I know that he can be dangerous with the new ball, but again, irrespective, the Indian batters need to score more runs, get into better positions, and look to time the balls rather than to hit it. India will be fine because India has got the quality in their top 3 or 4 who can definitely take on Shaheen Shah Afridi,” said Gambhir on ‘Game Plan’ show on Star Sports.

Further talking about how India’s batting should go about at Melbourne, former India left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan explained, “Look, one thing is clear. When you play at the MCG, the straight boundaries are not that big. It’s the side boundaries that are massive. Obviously, India needs to be smart, especially the batting.”

“Probably, it will be difficult to hit the side boundaries, so they have to play the gaps and probably convert the twos into threes and ones into twos, because running between the wickets will be very important.”

Irfan further elaborated about how India’s bowlers would have to adjust their lengths to try and curb the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, currently doing the bulk of scoring for Pakistan, from scoring big runs on October 23.

“Don’t give them any width whatsoever, especially Rizwan, because he’s the guy who takes the Powerplay on his shoulders. Just try to get the pace going. Babar takes his time. So, you need to be aware of those situations and those batters. First of all, the line has to be on the stumps, with tight lines. And with both batters, the length changes slightly.”

“When it comes to Rizwan, you can afford to bowl more fuller. You can try to hit him beneath the knee roll. This is where your line and length can be. And when it comes to Babar Azam, you need to get him out LBW, but your aim should not be on his front leg, it should be behind his leg because he’s slightly open. See, you need to make that kind of planning.”

“This is where Arshdeep and Bhuvneshwar Kumar come in with that in-swinging delivery. We need to be aware that Pakistan are not very good with spin bowling. So, you need to keep an eye on whether you can give one odd over to spinners in the Powerplay. You know, I’ll be very tempted to see what the team management is doing.”

Shaheen is a challenge

Probably best of play him well outside of your crease and try to nullify the lbw in the first over

If you survive his first over, you are well in the game

This would be a high risk approach to take against a bowler who is a master in delivering with a new white ball.

The risk isn't necessary because the other bowlers will give the Indians plenty of chances to make up for the economical overs to see off Shaheen.

Also Babar and Rizwan aren't exactly going to bat you out of the contest.

exactly, should try to attack him for a couple of boundaries in the very first over. Problem is rohit mostly hits pacers aerial on the leg side and there is a danger of getting caught in the deep if not timed well, as MCG has big square boundaries. I would be fuming if KL takes a single in the first two deliveries and the onus is on rohit to go for it.

Indian batsmen don' have great record against any left arm seamer. Not just shaheen. Recently Topley, Madhushanka, Peter willey. They just have to bowl left handed. They don't really have to do anything.

Well it couldn't be any clearer which of our players India fear the most.

Shaheen, Rizwan and Babar have another chance to give India some more PTSD. It's about time we returned the favour :))

These kind of statements show that if there was an India-Pak series, regardless of format, there would be record numbers in viewership.

BCCI doesn’t need the money anymore, but some Indian fans need to stop capping that “we don’t care about playing Pakistan anymore” you absolutely do. You just don’t want to make the PCB rich lol.

Childish comments from the has-beens. They are professional players and they know what to do. If it's a good ball, they will get out. If it's not, he will be smashed. It's the same rule for every player in every team.

In world T20 Indian top order is guilty showing tentativeness apart from Kohli. They try to survive in crunch games and it often makes a playable delivery into an unplayable delivery. KL Rahul is a culprit. He goes back defends and edges on to stump.

Batting outside crease against a 6 feet 2 inch bowler who can bowl close to 150 kmph ?

We should bat first, target 180 and then hand it over to the bowlers. Also, I truly believe Usman Qadir should play instead of Iftikhar or Haider. Shadab and Qadir can really dry up the boundaries and get some wickets during that middle-order phase as long as our quick bowlers get Rohit and Rahul in the PP and then bowl well at the death.

I am so nervous about our fielding though. Big occasion, huge field and half of the batting order is playing for their career. That's the perfect recipe for some heart-breaking dropped catches.

Indian fans, how do you guys genuinely feel about this game? Will it be close or do you believe your balanced team will get it done quite easily?

:))

They should also try to slog-sweep Shaheen.

Easier said than done Gautam.
Very difficult bowler for righties who can bring sharply in at 145K. Rather than going for a flick for boundary in first 12 balls, better to survive.

Expectation should be realistic from shaheen he is coming back from injury hopefully naseem shah compliment him well and take some pressure of shaheen

He is the best bowler

Indians missing a trick by not having mohsin in camp . Mohsin delivers at high pace with same angle , less swing . Would have been ideal for practise . Arshdeep is not shaheen but will give enuf swing practise .

Pakistan is favorites to win this wc.

Key is to play straight. They try to play across and get trapped with the in swing from the lefties. It's stupidity. Shaheen isn't Akram. He's coming from injury too. Just play straight and target Naseem. With his height I think his bowling will sit up nicely on those pitches. Key is to take Naseem and Nawaz for 80 runs. Shaheen and Shadab for 60 runs. If India can handle Rauf for 30 with not too much damage, they will win the game.
