So, I noticed a phenomena since 2016, the year the UK voted for Brexit. The morning of the Brexit result may have been shocking for some, but I was more shocked by the fact I, like many who voted for Brexit, were branded racists, fascists, and **** by Liberals and Remainers. So much so, about 5 'liberal' friends unfriended me on social media. Who cares right?

Got worse, when Trump won in 2016, my family were divided 50/50, and I'm talking about family in the USA; lo and behold once again, the liberals decided to shun the rest of the family, and since then, family dinners have been somewhat family takeaways! Still no issue right?

Well yesterday took the biscuit. A friend, who was dear to me as we shared many great times despite disagreeing on many subjects, really shocked me. His family contact me, and suggested I am close to bullying and harresing their loved one because I did not agree with Neoliberalism, EU, BLM, Zionism, and Trump. LOL what?

When I pointed out said friend accused me of being racist etc for voting Brexit, I really didn't get an answer. I was more disappointed by the fact said friend didn't have the courage to contact me directly.

Anyway, it turns out, when I look back, it's the Liberals who bail on friendship because of political disagreement.

As for me, I'm not changing my views, and I say good riddance to friendship based on agreement of politics and sycophancy.

So wondering whether anyone here has experienced something similar?

Differences should be tolerated till they are differences in what to eat, which places to visit etc. Not whether killing, humiliating and dispossessing should be tolerated or not.
If you have political views opposite to your friends, you have two options: 1)fool yourself and never talk about such things with them. 2) Get rid of them and make new friends.
From personal experience, I have lost many Indian friends over the years and only a handful remain who agree with my political views.

It's a worldwide phenomenon.

That's why social media has become junk.

This particular friend was special to me. I defended him, and supported him not just in his political endeavours, but during times of hardship, for each other. I would call him for advise.

Intelligent people have smarter people around them and people who disagree. This guy changed my view on certain things simply because we disagreed on certain things; had we agreed on everything, then I would not have learned from him. We are all different so we may learn from one another.

Just gutted to be honest.

Have far left and far right followers in my close relations and friends, even bigots, racists and all types of phobics, but these are very trivial things to ignore for family and friends. These labels are no big deal for me.

Having a diverse group of friends is important. Debates are routinely encouraged in our circles and even though they get heated sometimes, it all ends well with a dinner or a drink. What's the point of having a bunch of yes men in a group anyway. One has to be mature enough to take criticism or smart enough to understand there will be diverse opinions.

I understand what you're saying but I look at it differently. I can have a discussion with people having opposite political views but I cannot be friends with them. I can learn from discussions and debates and mere listening to a person who supports the colonization of my land without having to befriend him. You dont need to befriend someone to learn from them. Will you remain friends with a person like Emmanuel Macron who displays the caricatures of the Prophet (pbuh) and then says its just freedom of expression? Will you just brush it aside as difference of opinion?

In my personal view, difference of opinion among friends is a question of whether to eat pasta or pizza and other minor issues depending upon how much you can stretch your spectrum as long as they are minor issues for you. When it comes to major issues which involves your identity, your entire life and your people, i believe it's not right to stay friends with a person who doesnt care for them.

I guess as long as you are respectful with each other, you should generally be fine. That includes apologizing to someone afterwards in case you go personal during a debate.

Perhaps they find it difficult to workout how you are pro trump but also anti-zionist lol

i dont debate politics too much with family, most of my friends and family are more left wing than myself, surprise, surprise, but they old enough and wise enough to take the idealism with a pinch of salt. i remember having loads of disagreements with em, but never enough to affect our friendship.

the only caveat is religion, if someone says that xyz happened because of some divine act (usually a narrative of tests or punishments), i just nod and and am like ok. nothing to gain from entering that argument.

as a general rule i find ppl who are wedded to their beliefs to the point it becomes their identity difficult to hang around, eventually ill say something that offends them, or ill just have to bite my lip too much. its a good trait to admit u dont know the answers, makes for much better conversation.

My friends have learnt to ignore me about my BJP digs but am trying to be less on the face now coz they have been understanding because am not stubborn on any other aspect.

My father has made it a rule to not speak about politics with me either, I sometimes feel am spoilt lol, but dislike for BJP and religion are the only things that am stubborn about nothing else...

Entire PP does. This guy purports to be the biggest Muslim but supports Trump, the same Trump who has single handedly done the most damage to Palestinians and their cause, probably irreversibly. And that's not even talking about his bigoted Muslim ban and the other ** Trump has done in his term as President.

Not only that but this guy loves Boris. The same Boris who has said unbelievable trash about Islam and who's done nothing to stop snide Islamophobia in the Tory party.

Anyway back to the original topic but ive had a few heated debates with friends/family as im generally left on economics and conservative on social issues.

None have lead to lost friendships.

I must admit I too have been led down this path especially after having spent a few years in Trump's America and socializing there.

The platforms we use are to blame as well. With an eye on commercialization they have seemingly lost the plot somewhere, and genuine connections that we've spent years/decades constructing are gone in a few days because of an inane argument about Trump that means nothing. It's a crying shame.

I still remember when I logged on SM the morning after Brexit vote, the platform was dripping with tears and abuse. Liberals apologising for the UK, and the 'racist' vote.

I mean to unfriend because one voted Brexit! 😆

If liberals measure friendship on the basis of how much one agrees with them, then liberals do not understand friendship.

Fascism is the new face of liberalism.

One thing I learned for sure. You know where you stand with a right-wing. They will tell you what they hate etc, but you never know where you stand with liberals. These people live in the glades of hate and sycophancy; thus are snakes.

Trump is secondary issue, the first formost question liberals should be asked is why they were hell-bent on overturning a democratic result. The answer? They didn't like the result. 😆 😆 😆

I keep my view private and vote for who I think is the right person for the job...

Back in the old days your religion/ politics was a private matter and this rule was there for a reason so I think we shouldn't be talking politics with family/ friends

On this forum of course but not with family/friends just discuss lighter personnel topics like games/ shows or personal stuff

There's a reason why we now have 'the silent majority' - it's because of the liberals. You are either with them, or against them. No middle ground.

I just find the entire post 2016 behaviour of liberals quite astonishing! Open-minded my backside.

Its better to debate with strangers in person or online.

Politics causes divide, it's part of it's fabric. Also most people dont have a clue and become offended when you shed their ignorance for them.

Yet it's the liberals who want to flee/shun/ignore/name-call anyone who doesn't agree with them.

This was really the question in the OP, why is it liberals throw the tantrum? I mean we have a few resident liberals In this thread, and I bet they have 'unfriended' people who don't agree with them, just won't fess up.

Imo there is no such thing as a liberal. They only claim to be liberal if it suits their views or agenda.

You sound triggered bro.

Political difference is one thing but tbh I would find it really hard to be friend with a over the top MAGA type. I think there is a difference in being conservative and being a Trump fanatic.

Exactly, you can’t complain about people judging you, when you label everyone left to you as a looney and snowflake.

that's with every political group tbh

would you really wanna be friend with gender neutral, vegan hipster not really or annoying youth brigade types or Modi Ji Bhagwan ka avatar Indians

That’s true, any political ideology taken to the extreme is annoying.

the term liberal has been hijacked, classic liberalism, the belief in the fundamental liberty of the individual in so much as they do not attack the person or property of another, has been replaced with divisive variant of collectivist identity politics.

these groups look to outsource the duty of individual responsibility and infantalise an entire groups of people on nothing other than some common denominator.

whilst im not a dyed in the wool classic liberal, i certainly favour that ideology many times over what is today being peddled as liberalism.

Fascism is the new face of liberalism.

It doesnt matter if you are liberal or conservative. This is a principled stance and i explained the reasons. A Palestinian cannot be friends with supporters of settler colonialism, a black man could not have been friends with a person who supported their slavery back in the day, A jew could not be friends with someone who even remotely justifies the holocaust. Its simple.

Very much true, and 2010-2015 we had a Tory and Liberal Party coallition and it wasn't too bad.

Things after 2015 changed for sure with the EU referendum, then the Trump win.

JoB on LBC is perhaps one of the pioneers of this new breed of Liberalism we're seeing now.

Good thread. This is happening a lot out there. Brexit, Trump, and Corbynism seem to be the biggest factors.

Lost a very close friend to politics this year. Met him as a student, kept in touch after, came to my wedding years ago.

Unfortunately he was quite pro-Corbyn, which is one of the select groups of political people who are very intolerant of people’s opinions if they are not also very pro-Corbyn.

He was being very rude and confrontational towards me over a long period, in person and over social media. He was making me feel terrible about myself and affecting my mental health.

I eventually got tired of essentially being bullied, and so one day I sent him a message cutting ties with him (with a full explanation as to why) and ending our friendship.

Very painful and upsetting, to be honest. Still gutted about it months later. I hope one day when we are older that we can make up. I would be willing to talk to him tomorrow if he got in touch.

Ideology is the real family whether you like it or not.

If you or your loved ones fall into this trap, im sorry but you are just a bunch of fools.

the left and right are nothing but a facade created to sow divisions and blind your judgment.. we all know the truth is somewhere in between but we simply let our egos and emotions dictate us.

Let us take Trump for an example. He was a democrat all his life but turned republican only cuz he knew he had a better chance of winning with them. he talks about ending chain immigration when his own wife and her family moved to the US using that system.

Stop ruining your lives over this crap. Just sit back and enjoy others fighting over it. hahaha

Well said. Sounds like OP has fallen for populist rhetoric and now there is more populist rhetoric on the left as well.

Spoken like a true Yorkshireman. Someone's different (race/religion/views)? Let's dislike them!

I don't know much about Corbyn but Brexit was a nationalist movement. Admiring Trump is just weird. You don't have to be on the right or left of any spectrum but just be an intelligent critical empathetic human being to see Trump for what he is.

Brexit was a nationalist movement? LOL! Brexit was the result of austerity.

The NFL - Neo Fascist Liberals - the ones who pretend to be liberal but in reality are poor sooks because they ended up on the losing side of democracy. They have a special triat, the ability spin an undesired result into a right-wing agenda, then top it up by trying to overturn results by any means nessacary.

This is precisly why the phenomena in question is widespread and not just confined in the UK because of Brexit. NFL have been after Trump in the USA too.

Something has to be done about these sore sensitive losers. A very intolerant bunch.

Intolerance is most certainly a theme. Rather than try and understand why people voted for Brexit, Trump, Corbyn etc, the NFL are quick to parrot media responses. Very narrowminded practise.

The media has essentially brainwashed these people into beliving Trump/Brexit/Corbyn etc are evil, why? Simply because all 3 outcomes were against the establishment.

Dude here is the thing. You are whining and complaining about people having rigid views and unfriending you but have you read your own comments? You are a rigid and stubborn as they are. This is the problem. You might not unfriend them.. maybe you do and you are just not saying.. who knows.. but it’s a very common narrative from the RW the way you are blaming it all on the left. Meanwhile, in Texas the other day the RW tried to run a Biden bus off the road.. so who is a snowflake here? If you can’t handle opposing views, is that what you are supposed to do?

My suggestion is to take a deeper look within. Perhaps, it will behoove all of us to consider than we are not always 100% correct. Biden is a hypocrit, Trump is a liar and a con man, Brexit may have helped England in the long term, but in the short term it’s bad for England, BJ is a buffoon and so is Corbyn although a lot of what he says appeals to me personally as a Muslim... etc are all statements that most of us will agree with quietly inside but most do t come out and admit them because it doesn’t fit the narrative of their political faction.

I don't post my political views on social media. The odd meme sometimes.

Here's the thing. When UK voted for Brexit, all hell broke lose, and it was the left who first labelled Brexiteers racist. The same with Trump, another establishment beat, the Russians did it blah blah. To make matter worse, trying to overturn the results didn't help!

It's not about persona; I am talking about people I know for over 20 years and have had far heated debates on religion which is more personal to these 'unfriended' peeps. My persona isn't new to them.

The other day I posted a meme in a family worldwide whatsapp group. It was a harmless meme with Obama and Trump, with gasoline prices. It was just a meme showing gasoline prices were cheaper under Trump , and the US side in the group went into a tail spin. This never happened before 2016!

Politics divides people to hatred many times esp if your views are seen as right wing. Families in America are falling out if they are split between democrats and republicans.

In 24 hrs you will see the election. In 72 hours you will see a lot of violence from the losing side.

This is a important topic, please post your own experiences and views. I

Well here is the thing about it. Call me establishment if you must but most of the populist RW movements are immensely fueled by conspiracy theories. Social media has done a lot in this regard. And whether you like or not some of that stuff is backed by hard evidence. Liberals don’t cry about Russian for no good reason. The entire US intelligence community has confirmed it. They use social media to sway opinion. They use conspiracy theories and whatnot and this is all part of modern warfare, we see India and modi utilize it all the time as well. Russia does it. China does it. US did it .. etc.
it’s important to filter out the facts now. Liberals use it to extend their agenda too. But I would call out whoever shares crap with me I can spot miles away and I call a spade a spade. I hate the covid conspiracy theories, climate naysayers, flat earthers, qanon followers, etc. I just find it interesting though that where most of these whacky ideas intersect, you find a lot of trump or modi supporters. What you are witnessing could be some people unhappy with that situation and not because they are liberals or Dems or whatever.

Just saying..

I think it’s going to be pretty bad. We will either see massive riots by hooligans who have hijacked BLM or white supremacists with guns going around harassing people. We are in for a tough few months I think.

Yup I agree that social media doesn't help, and some of the conspiracy theories are crazy like the flat-earthers: but topics like Climate Change are not conspiracies. The naysayers, agree there is climate change but disagree on cause.

Russia has been the bogeyman since the dawn of the Cold war, and it's no conspiracy Russia were allies of the West. Obama campaign used Cambridge Analytics too.

The problem is not conspiracy theories, the problem is that people have lost faith and trust in the Government and system - and there are many reasons to list since 2008 - none of them conspiracies.

Trump is not the problem, he is the symptom. He wouldn't be on stage if he didn't have the votes, and that's where the questions need to be asked - why did people vote for Trump?

Of course with the establishment beat, the media are relentless in their negative and bias reporting; which simply adds fuel to the fire.

Yet this still doesn't explain why people have suddenly decided to take political outcomes so personally. I mean Trump, he's got nothing to do with the UK, yet Brits are falling out with their families over him!
