What's new

When will Sarfaraz Ahmed start taking more responsibility with the bat?

The fact that you think people (almost everyone here) cricitizing Sarfraz are "pseudo Pakistanis" -- show what kind of logic and train of though you use to debate here, and to defend your heroes.

No use - you will not see the bigger picture objectively.

Yeah those who call Pakistan's tournament victories as flukes and if we win bi-laterals 'no importance' plus make threads after threads criticizing Pakistan cricket without providing any solution have surely an agenda or are here for attention seeking. Cant think of anything else.

Atleast man up and for once admit that we did ok considering where we were.

And thanks i dont want to see the bigger picture with your glasses.

Haha, what a stupid question. Every win is good.

You're here long enough to remember that I was a huge Sarfraz supporter. Pull up my threads and posts blindly supporting Sarfraz.

I used to attack others just like you two are doing here. Blindly. If anyone criticized Sarf.

But then I saw the reality. His level as a batsman is nowhere good enough, apart from the purple patch he had.

And his leadership is poor.

So leadership is poor but only Pakistani captain to win an ODI tournament other than the great Imran Khan

SarfiBabarHaris can you help me make sense of this logic?

There is no logic. Hawkeye is still upset why Pakistan won CT and that too under Sarfraz hence the countless threads.

Grow up Mamoon...

Where were you when Sarf scored 2 x 80 plus scores in the 2nd test...

All of a sudden you open a dormant thread just to slag him off (previous post before your comment was on 22 Sep?)

Get a life!

After how many innings did he score a 50? Is that irrelevant? Or we just do the Lala treatment and ignore all failures?

Pretty simple, Hasan Ali and Fakhar Zaman with the help of Babar and Hafeez were very good and their scoring and wicket taking, ie performance, not ambiguous leadership abilities won them the CT.

So much is made of captaincy and so little of talent/performance.

So as per your logic we should credit wins to other players but losses to captain.

Mashallah lovely logic.

Look sarfraz is playing as a specialist captain in t20s. He played one innings in the test series only so there is no surprise that he has been letting the team down as a player. He is not the same player he once was and should step down in t20s for now at least.

Pakistan under Sarfraz restricted teams to 230s when 300+ was a par score in the tournament.

Similar team which was pummeled for 440 in same England under Azhar an year back.

Pakistani bowlers didn't become heroes from zeroes in an year.

Big credit to players but Sarfraz deserve a lot of credit in our CT win too especially while restricting teams.

Is that what is said?

Right, so don't create fallacies as narratives.

I give Sarfraz no credit in anything. He does nothing either way. He's just a passenger.

In losses he doesn't score, he gets as much blame as anyone else who fails, but he doesn't score runs minus that test after what 10-12 innings and now we pretend he's doing so well?

There are better keepers. He's nothing great as a tactician.

Did he tell Fakhar score a century? Was it his amazing captaincy that has Hasan Ali look unstoppable?

The captain seems to get so much more credit than the players who perform.

The irony is you're giving him more credit than the players who actually tangibly did things with the numbers to prove it.

No, credit to Hasan Ali who looked unstoppable. You're giving him all this credit for restricting but since then we've had all these failures and we ignore that?

As I said, I think he has no impact on winning or losing. He's just on the team and his captaincy is given way too much credit.

You can't look at "look at the CT!" Without look at the AC or getting whitewashed in the ODI series or the SL test loss.

This is what i wrote:

"Big credit to players but Sarfraz deserve a lot of credit in our CT win too especially while restricting teams."

Where did i gave him all the credit? Do you guys not read or is it a habit of you lot to make things up?

The best thing for Pakistan right now will be for Sarfraz to get injured some how for one month so we can permanently remove him from the team

Can this batting line up afford a specialist captain?

Should bring in Rizwan and give test captaincy to Azhar.

People will jump on Sarfaraz, yes his batting is embarrasing but how about the worldclass pair Azhar and Asad, their dismissal was nothing but pathetic after playing so many games and experience. A wasted investment:ssmith

Should play next test if he performs okay doesn’t then should drop himself from third test
And step down from test captaincy after the series

It must be demoralizing for players to have such a mediocre captain who is insecure about his own position in the side. This is a mistake that keeps costing Pak.

One approach irrespective of the match situation, opponent or the pitch.

One approach irrespective of the match situation, opponent or the pitch.

Does he even have another shot against pace, apart from trying to run it down to third man?

Add to that, crouching like a cheetah before hunting.

A disgrace of a batsman, and a very bad role model for the team. And, least said about his gully level shouting at his team mates, the better.

Liability with the bat in all forms.

He will announce retirement from Test cricket once South Africa whitewash us in this series.

The least he can show is some fight, hang around tough it out Considering the match situation it was dreadful stuff from the captain

His and shafiqs dismissals were abysmal from senior pros U wouldny defend a newbie playing the shots they did

Looked like they both dont have the stomach for a battle

No player is bigger than the team. The team comes first always. Ricky Ponting dropped himself from the team and stood down as captain for Mumbai Indians in the IPL acknowledging he was a misfit in the team. We just don't have those characters in the team.

It's true there aren't a lot of standout captaincy candidates but when your actual captain doesn't make the team on merit then you have no alternative but to replace him.

That will be done to try and save his place in ODI format.

His batting in this Test looks like a player who doesn't fancy toughing it out versus South Africa.

Sarfraz as a batsman only

Considering the disastrous batting performance by the Pakistani batters, and especially the seniors like Azhar, Shafiq and Sarfraz himself, it is probably time to try new things. We as fans are now tired of seeing these collapses again and again, we need some balance in the middle and the captain also has to show some maturity in his batting.

Is captaining, keeping and batting a huge task? if so, why not trying rizwan as your keeper and let sarfraz bat in the top 5 without the pressure of keeping, and let him just concentrate on his batting and captaincy only.

Rizwan had some good success recently especially with the A team and surely it is worthy trying him against a good opposition. He has been rated very highly for a long time now, it is time to give him good exposure.

Just to talk about this series, I would also like if the management and captains show some guts to drop Shafiq. He has been in the team for a very long time, but hasn't been able to won us many matches. Surely You do not expect this from your "Technically most sound batsman" in the team.

Azhar also has been up and down from the past one year, and only few innings saved his average this year, otherwise he has failed miserably. I think it is really time to take some tough decisions and make these guys understand that their place is not permanent.

Youngsters like Imam (who has been criticised a lot), babar and Shan have given us some home, and they have to be backed, there will be failures but we have to back them. We have backed people like Asad Shafiq who has increased his average only in one or two years, why not these guys?

In the next match, my ideal XI would be: Shan, Imam, Haris, Babar, Sarfraz (wk), Rizwan, Faheem, Amir, Yasir, Abbas, Shaheen.
Knowing that the management will never compromise on sarfraz the keeper, I kept him as the keeper.

On the long run, we should probably forget about fawad alam now, and invest in young people performing in domestic. Fawad had a really unlucky career and surely deserved better, but it is now time to not create more Fawad Alams in domestic. Usman Salahuddin has been dropped after one match only, and one between Saad Ali or Saud Shakeel.

This below would be my ideal 15 men squad:
Shan, Imam, Haris, Babar, Sarfraz, Rizwan, Faheem, Amir, Yasir, Abbas, Shaheen, Usman Salahuddin, Saad Ali/Saud Shakeel, Kashif Bhatti, Sadaf Hussain.

If Azhar, doesn't perform in this series he must be dropped, we have given too many chances. It is now time to give value to the domestic performers and youngsters.

Sarfaraz is struggling to score - you cannot play him as other than a keeper - the rest need to do their job also

Probably there is too much pressure on him with three roles to manage, easing one load might be fruitful for his batting form, and also for Rizwan

If Rizwan plays in the 2nd Test and does well, the pressure on Sarfaraz will intensify.

In a tough spot is the skipper.

Sarfraz knows he has Mickey's backing. Back in Waqar Younis' days Sarfraz wasn't first choice. Wiqi bhai even tried turning Junior in to first choice wk. Sarfraz needs a kick up the back side and taking away test captaincy might do it. Problem is - who replaces him as captain?

Sarfaraz’s body language has been pretty down so far in SA. I kind of feel his heart is not in test cricket anymore....

At this point, being relieved of test captaincy seems to be the only way out for Sarfraz from horrible batting form. Other than that, Rizwan is knocking on the door hard.

Pant a considered failure has scored 24,38 39,34,29,35 in last few innings

Not going to happen. He only knows how to play one way

Can’t compare my six with the great Miandad, says Sarfaraz

Sharjah, 23 February 2019:

Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed refused to compare his last-ball six with the one great Javed Miandad hit at the same Sharjah Cricket Stadium some 33 years ago.

The tradition of last-ball six at the iconic stadium, host of a world record 236 ODIs, started in April 1986 when Miandad hitting India’s Chetan Sharma in the final to help Pakistan clinch the Austral-Asia Cup for Pakistan.

On Friday, the ghost of last-ball six hurt Multan Sultans when Dan Christian was smashed for a last-ball six by former South Africa all-rounder David Wiese in Lahore Qalandars’ win.

Wiese was on the receiving end within 24 hours later on Saturday as Quetta, needing two off the last ball, were helped over the line by Sarfaraz’s six over deep mid-wicket.

Asked whether he followed Miandad’s tradition, Sarfaraz replied: “You cannot compare my feat with Miandad’s. His was an international match and the pressure of an international match - that too against India – must have been enormous.”

Sarfaraz kept his nerves as wickets fell at the other end as Gladiators, chasing 144 to win, needed 36 off the last five overs.

He added 54 for the sixth wicket with Mohammad Nawaz and despite losing Nawaz in the penultimate over and then Anwar Ali off the first ball of the 20thover, did not lose his resolve of fighting till the last ball.

Sarfaraz said he has learnt the art of playing calmly from international matches, a trait he also praised in his counterpart at the same match, AB de Villiers.

“AB plays so calmly and, while there is no comparison, but I have also learnt to play calmly. Whenever I get a chance to bat under pressure, I keep my cool and that’s why I delivered tonight.”

Sarfaraz praised his bowlers, led by young Ghulam Mudassar (three for 21) and the seasoned Sohail Tanvir (two for 21) who restricted Lahore to 143 for seven.

“We bowled well and credit to the bowlers for keeping Qalandars to 143 and that helped us a great deal."

Quetta Gladiators are on top of the six-team table with four wins in as many games, scoring eight points.

Excellent innings today from Sarfaraz in 5th ODI!

Just showed he should have been batting higher in the order to start with. He is down as number 5 but this is the first time this series he as actually come in at that position. This suits him much better, and it also shows it is a lot easier to score for top order batsmen than it is when you are expected to clobber death bowlers for sixes.

Another inconsequential knock in a dead rubber.

Does nothing but quell a few haters on this thread as his credentials as captain.

Does nothing in the context of this game.

I am happy for Sarfraz though he has seen alot of flak from his haters, we all know he was capable of this, but in the context of the game and the series it is as frutiless as they come. We need more people to step up when it required. For example when needing 30 off 3 overs, rather than chasing a mammoth total with half the side already in the pavilion. Our players do want to appear as the lone rangers fighting a useless battle. They need to play more as a team than trying to be the superhero.

Well played today.

TOday he showed that he is leading from the front.
I think this also shows that Sarfraz is much suited at 3 or 4 down.

Good innings by the Captain, this is the kind of innings we need from him in the world cup

I thought he batted really well today.

Aggressive and didn't let the bowlers settle.

Unlucky way to get out.

Better innings than any Imam or Babar have played in their careers. Richly deserved a ton. Was smashing the bowlers even when approaching the ton and not dealing in binary numbers like the two stats padders.

Major difference today was where he batted. Most people (except team management) understand Sarfraz is well capable of innings like these, but he needs to come in at 4/5

Sarfraz coming in with 10-15 overs left does no one any good

dont know who told him he is a good batsman for lower order when the reality is he is a terrible batsman for lower order as he has no power game; he should never bat below #5

I thought he batted really well today.

Unlucky way to get out.

When he bats like this and in this position, he should be able to take tough calls on selection

Looked energetic and excellent. The best I have seen play in a long while. From what I seen of him, he looks good at 4 or 5 but doesn't have the power for a 7, particularly against the Pacers.

He looked good today but regardless needs to improve and needs to take responsibly with his field placement and bowling changes , it's basic that when you take a wicket you want to put pressure on the new batsman and more and one way by doing this is not to allow easy singles and have slip fielders this guy doesn't like to use Slip fielders at all

Haris also looks better the earlier he bats. Looks poor under pressure when he has start to score quickly straight from the off.

See, the issue is that the captains position should be non negotiable (especially till over 35). Haris has to play elsewhere

Batted really well today. When he is on song, he is a very valuable player in the middle overs due to his ability to rotate the strike and play spin well. Number 5 should be his position for sure from now on.

He's the captain, if he's batting at the wrong position it's all down to him.

If Haris bats lower than 4, he doesn't add any momentum to the innings. If Sarfraz bats at 4, Haris should not play.

I mean it depends on who is in the squad. Leave hafeez aside for the moment, but if the the choice is between who should be in the playing eleven from a squad which has Malik and Haris, I would say Haris should play

Been saying this forever, Sarfraz needs to bat in the top 4, he is useless and wasted down the order. I would actually prefer him to bat 1 down with Babar opening the batting. He rotates the strike so well and you need that as soon as spinners come on.

Shameful innings from our captain - resign now please Sarfaraz Ahmed

11 of 27 in a WC game vs India - and you are our captain? Please give your job up now.

His batting has been poor for years. Sure he had the odd good score but no match winnings innings apart from the CT match v Lanka.

He is simply not a good enough batsmen to be playing ODIs. Time to move on.

You can't hide him anywhere in the batting order against a good bowling attack.

He doesn’t know what responsibility is. The days he started sending Faheem and Hasan Ali ahead of himself should have been the signs that this guy will take us nowhere. I don’t even need to mention his lack of ability and awful tactics which are there for all to see.

Made his way to the team on the back of a century against Ireland. Got media backing for no real reason. Only used to sweep and play midwicket shots at the start of his career until he got found out.

Since then, has been an abysmal batsman in all formats of the game. Put on weight and became lethargic to a point that the fat cells got to his brain also.

Absolute embarrassment for any Pakistani to see a man like him represent the country in front of the world.

Stated this on another thread as well, and stating again. Him playing at no.5 neither inspires any confidence nor any reliability in the middle order batting. Is an impending wicket waiting to fall any moment with his poor low yield high risk shots, and his lack of ability to play big shots in the last 10-15 overs is cringeworthy.

He's 32 already, if he hasn't improved his game by now, he won't do it after this.
Rizwan looks more assured with the bat and atleast possess some reasonable hitting ability when set.
Should be given adequate chances at no.5 where I believe he is best suited at.

The less said about Sarfraz, the test batter, the better.
His purple patch has been over since 2016, and has only been declining ever since. Hasn't played a single match winning inning in a long time. Isn't responsible or good enough to bat at no.6 when we go in with 5 bowlers.

It is obvious now that the burden of captaincy is impacting his batting. Let someone else shoulder that responsibility and give Sarfraz some time to see if it helps bring him back into his groove.

Sarfraz has hardly played any captain's knocks. Never takes responsibility for the team.

Only silver lining to a defeat here means this pathetic captaincy stint will not be prolonged.

Dropped on 2 today also.

Pressure situation and he flopped.

Today was a golden opporunity for him to play a captain's innings and take us home, but as per usual, he failed when it mattered. He needs to be sacked as a captain after the world cup.

All he had to do was knock it around and instead once again ran himself out

When will he learn to not throw his wkt away
