Where does India stand in the US v Russia conflict over Ukraine?

what exactly are you bringing to this conversation other than stupid distractions? because india has adopted english as a de facto primary language aside from regional languages, that means that we have surrendered our sovereignty?

by that standard you consider south africa a dutch colony? or bangladesh a colony of the state of west bengal?

i understand the urge to be a troll when there is little else to do. consider getting a library membership or a hobby. or both.

You don't agree that the English language is a soft power? Why are you even here debating it in English then?

One of the many Indian students stranded in Ukraine's Kyiv sent a video to NDTV today, saying they were being "thrown out of trains" when they went to a station for evacuation under the instructions of the Indian embassy. Currently, 350 students from two medical colleges in Kyiv are at the railway station, waiting to catch a train to Uzhhrohod or Lviv in western Ukraine. But they say they are not being allowed to board. Those who managed to do so, were "attacked with sticks" and physically thrown off.

The students from Taras Shevchenko National University and Bogomoletes National M University say they were asked by the embassy to move to Uzhhrohod or Lviv.

In the video, Radhika Lakshmi, a third year student, is heard saying: "The embassy told us we are being evacuated today and we came all the way to the Kiev railway station. We are being thrown out of the train. We are not even being allowed in... the students are being attacked with sticks and stuff... there are hundreds of students here. We are all stranded. Please do something really quick".

The foreign office has asked the Indian students in the war-torn nation to make their way towards western Ukraine, "but not to the border posts... in consultation with ministry teams and seek shelter in towns".

"People should not reach the border directly. If they do, they will face long waiting time to cross over. Do reach western parts of Ukraine. Please seek shelter in nearby towns. Our teams will help you. There are enough flights. Move to the border only after consultation with our teams," foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters at a press conference this evening.

Two advisories were issued today asking the students to "make their way" to the Kyiv Railway Station to travel west, he added.

Around 8,000 Indians have left Ukraine since the foreign ministry sent its first advisory before Russia launched the attack on the east European nation, Mr Bagchi said.

So far 1,396 students have reached India in six evacuation flights under "Operation Ganga", he added.

But thousands remain behind amid the panic and food shortage, sheltering from Russian bombs and missiles in safe houses, underground metro stations and basements, desperately sending out appeals for help.

India's top lender will not process any transactions involving Russian entities subject to international sanctions imposed on Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, according to a letter seen by Reuters and people familiar with the matter.

"No transactions involving entities, banks, ports or vessels appearing" on a US, European Union or United Nations sanctions list shall be processed irrespective of the currency of the transaction, said a letter sent by State Bank of India (SBI) to certain clients.

SBI did not immediately respond to emails or calls seeking comment on the matter.

"We have a significant international presence and we need to comply with US and EU regulations as we are present in those jurisdictions and we cannot be seen as not adhering to these rules," said a senior SBI executive.

The invasion, which Moscow calls a "special operation" and which is the biggest assault on an European state since World War Two, was met with widespread condemnation and an array of sanctions.

India, which has deep trade and defence ties with Russia, has so far not publicly condemned its long-standing ally, but has called for an end to violence and for diplomacy and dialogue to resolve the conflict.

SBI in the letter to clients also urged "extra precautions" while handling any transactions related to sanctioned countries.

Many major Indian firms have deep links with the state-controlled lender, which has a large network of overseas branches.

SBI has also sought information from Indian oil companies about their exposure to Russia including stakes in Russian assets, funds received from Russia in the last year and lenders involved in routing these transactions, according to two senior energy industry sources.

One of India's top refiners, Indian Oil Corp, said on Monday it would no longer accept cargoes of Russian crude and Kazakh CPC Blend cargoes on a free on board (FOB) basis due to insurance risk.

Apart from oil companies, Indian fertiliser companies also deal extensively with Russia for imports of crop nutrients.

India supporting Russia in UN and economically the west, makes sense considering the fallout Russian economy is going to have.

Should be interesting how China takes things going forward they clearly didn’t think West was going to go bonkers with their sanctions as well.

As said by their historians Chinese are biggest beneficiaries of current global systems.

Oh really? This is violation of sovereignty? What about NATO invasion of Iraq.and Libya? Breaking Yugoslavia?

By that logic, India fighting and breaking up Pakistan in 1971 was an invasion and violation as well ?

Iraq and Libya were dictatorships that were overthrown for different reasons and had local support; they weren't permanent land grabs by the US like this Russia-Ukraine conflict is. And NATO wasn't invading and breaking up Yugoslavia, they bombed them to prevent the Serbian massacre against the Albanians in 1999. Please learn some history and context.

10 to 20 mn from East Pakistan entered India and despite Indian pleas pakistan was not stopping its citizens from invading India.

To top it, Pakistan attacked first with OP Chengiz Khan.

Who is US and NATO to decide which government should stay and which will go?

India will keep buying oil and gas from Russia. That sector isnt under any sanction. They will use the Russian banks not under sanctions or use other banks in other countries.

Russia has way too many allies and India's relationship is way to deep and important. It will not be abandoned for the sake of the every flipping NATO and West.

True, but we know India was going to attack anyway and only delayed their invasion till Oct due to the weather conditions.

Who is US and NATO to decide which government should stay and which will go?

Did you read what I wrote ? US didn't break Yugoslavia, there was a lot of international pressure on a very reluctant Clinton to bomb the place to stop the Serbian massacres.

Iraq was attacked (wrongly I must add) due to 9/11 and dictator Saddam's suspected links with Al-Qaeda. That is slightly different from Russia just waking up one day and deciding to attack a democratic Ukraine and take it's territory.

1. India had mobilized but didn't attack. India didn't want to start the war.

2. Is US NATO attacking other countries with dictators at the helm and genocide? East Pakistan genocide occurred, guess which side US interfered on?

US and NATO wanted a broken Yugoslavia, another non US ally gone.

1. India had mobilized but didn't attack. India didn't want to start the war.

This is a lie. Indira Gandhi insisted on attacking East Pak in April 1971 but General Manekshaw refused because the weather conditions were not suitable, he even offered to resign because of this but Gandhi finally relented.

East Pakistan genocide occurred, guess which side US interfered on?

That was more attributable to the evil and racist Nixon-Kissinger duo, who most americans now revile. Nixon was an awful character and remains the only US president to have resigned while in office. There were plenty of US diplomats who were protesting about the 71 genocide but Nixon didn't listen and wanted preserve Pak's role as a gateway to China.

US and NATO wanted a broken Yugoslavia, another non US ally gone.

You are uninformed on this topic. Its pointless to make any further comment.

India, Pakistan take a similar diplomatic path on Russia-Ukraine

New Delhi/Islamabad – India and Pakistan have both emphasised the importance of de-escalation in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, while carefully avoiding ascribing responsibility for the violence, with the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours attempting to walk differing diplomatic high-wires, analysts say.

On Sunday, Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke via telephone with his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba, reiterating Pakistan’s call for a cessation of hostilities.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022...nd-pakistan-walk-similar-diplomatic-tightrope

Wise thing to do for both the countries...no need to get involved in someone else's war and try to remain neutral. Boris Johnson guy opened his mouth too much, more than he can chew and now entire UK is worried about imminent Russian attack.

Russia is a very strong country...even USA cant do zilch. There is no need for India to get involved in this at all.

New Delhi: Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagoudar, a 21-year-old medical student from Karnataka, was standing in the queue for food in Ukraine's Kharkiv this morning when he was killed in Russian shelling.

Not long before going out for food and cash, Naveen had spoken to his father, Shekar Gowda, and had told him that there was no food or water left in the bunker he had been hiding in with a few others from Karnataka.

Naveen was a final year medical student at the Kharkiv National Medical University. He was from Karnataka's Haveri and lived near a prominent government building that was blown up by Russian soldiers.

"With profound sorrow we confirm that an Indian student lost his life in shelling in Kharkiv this morning. The Ministry is in touch with his family. We convey our deepest condolences to the family," tweeted the External Affairs Ministry, confirming the tragic news from Ukraine.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said Shekar Gowda, "choking with grief", said he had spoken with his son "just in the morning over the phone and he used to call up twice or thrice every day".

Pooja Praharaj, a student coordinator in Kharkiv, spoke to NDTV shortly after the student's death.

"He had only gone to get food. For others in the hostel, we provide food, but he stayed in a flat just behind the Governor's House. He had been standing in the queue for an hour or two. Suddenly there was an air strike that blew up the Governor's House and he was killed," Ms Praharaj said.

News of his death broke when a Ukrainian woman picked up his phone, said the student coordinator.

"Speaking from his phone, she said the owner of this phone is being taken to the morgue," she shared.

Naveen's friend Shridharan Gopalakrishnan said he last saw him around 8.30. But he gave a different version of how he was killed.

"Naveen was shot dead around 10.30 am Ukrainian time today. He was standing in the queue before a grocery shop when the Russian army fired at people. We have no information about his body. None of us was able to visit the hospital, probably where it is kept now," Sridharan said.

Indian tricolour came to rescue of fleeing Pakistani, Turkish students from Ukraine

BUCHAREST: India's national tricolour came to the rescue of not only the stranded Indians but also those hailing from Pakistan and Turkey to cross into the neighbouring countries of Ukraine.

The Indian students who arrived in the city of Bucharest in Romania from Ukraine said that the national tricolour helped them as well as some Pakistani and Turkish students in safely crossing the various checkpoints in the war-torn country.

The Indian students arrived in the Romanian city to catch the special evacuation flights being operated under 'Operation Ganga' from the neighbouring countries of Ukraine. Air India, SpiceJet and Indigo are flying special evacuation flights.

"We were told in Ukraine that being Indians and carrying Indian flag, we won't have any problems," said a medical student who arrived from Odesa in Southern Ukraine.

The students narrated how they bought spray paints from the markets to prepare Indian flags.

"I ran to the market, bought some colour sprays and a curtain. I then cut the curtain and spray-painted it to make the Indian tricolour," said a student.

They added that even some Pakistani and Turkish students passed checkpoints using the Indian flag.
"The Turkish and Pakistani students were also using the Indian flag," a student said, adding that the Indian flag was of great help to the Pakistani, Turkish students.

The students from Odessa moved from Molodova to Romania.

"We booked the bus from Odesa and came to the Molodova border. The Moldovan citizens were very nice. They provided us with free accommodation and taxis and buses to get to Romania," a student said. Further adding that they did not face much problem in Molodova as the Indian embassy had already made the arrangements.

The students also expressed their gratitude to the Indian embassy officials who arranged for their food and shelter as they awaited their flights back to India.

"When a student is arriving here, he's first taken to a proper shelter and provided with food while the registration takes place while dates on which they will be evacuated are finalised," the student said.

Earlier on Monday, the Indian government deputed four Union Cabinet ministers to the neighbouring countries of Ukraine to coordinate the evacuation efforts following a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, campaigning for the Uttar Pradesh election, said today it was because of India's rising power that his government was able to evacuate citizens from Ukraine. He also said India would not spare any effort to bring home citizens from Ukraine.
"It's because of India's rising power that we are able to evacuate citizens from Ukraine," PM Modi said at a public rally in Sonbhadra in UP, according to news agency PTI.

He also hit out at the opposition, especially the Congress, as he said, "Those who questioned the valour of armed forces and 'Make in India' can't make the country strong."

In the middle of aggressive campaigning for state elections, the Ukraine crisis and the plight of Indian students stranded there has spurred opposition attacks on the government.

PM Modi has held four meetings in three days over the evacuation of Indian citizens from Ukraine.

lol its amazing what passes as news nowadays.

Indians are getting beaten up and thrown out of trains but somebody wants to make up an article about the power of the indian flag in this hopefully situation.

The levels that some people stoop to to spread fake news and false patriotism is sickening.

Next we will have articles about how Ukranians are spraying Indian flags onto buildings and Russian forces are turning back and fleeing after seeing the flag.

The Africans have said that Ukrainians are giving priority to Ukrainians and then Indians.

May be they are lying as well.

If pakistan government would have worked to get them out, they wouldn't need to resort to these tactics.

Anyways this is war time, if any innocent guy is getting out by whatever means, we should be thankful.

If India and Pakistan coordinated their efforts well, that wouldn't have been bad.

I don;t believe an article in the modern world that is written based on an eye witness account by one person.

In a time of crisis the Indian media still need to fabricate stories to attempt to show their superiority over Pakistan.

Indians are being beaten black and blue in Ukraine and even dying. There is no need for jingoism at a time like this.

The flag that was no use to those Indians being beaten is useful to Pakistanis and turks!

The Indian economy will collapse if we anger the West and our Military ties with Russia will suffer if we anger the Russians. You play both sides. Something that Sri Lanka does with everyone. Indian government has no moral and it never did so to ask the Indian government to shed tears over Ukranian civilians is far fetched.

What's the point of bringing Mughals into this ? BJP bahkths are instigators.

Ukraine’s ambassador to India Igor Polikha on Tuesday compared Russia’s military campaign against his country to the “massacre arranged by the Mughals against Rajputs”.

Do some google search you will find.

Thanks for sharing as this just proves my point regarding the Indian flag being useless.

Clearly Ukranians are slapping them around and not letting them leave.

:D Some Pakistanis just thought it was fashionable.

By the way, read the tweet again and look at google maps. Russians are themselves looking out for Indians on Kharkiv side. Ukrainians want them to go towards Polish border. Effectively, both Ukraine and Russians are looking after Indians!

Indians in Ukraine were asked to come back on 02/15, 9 days before invasion. Those who are stranded there will face hardship coming back either due to Ukraine/Russian army, local population or delays in rescue operation.

So far Indians have been treated well generally. Make what you want from stray incidences that may happen in this situation.

Goi has done exceedingly well in past decade rescuing Indians from abroad - even better than any western nation.

Even if we accept this version, it just shows Indians are happy to brag about being second class citizens.

Still, I suppose being second class citizens without the local passport is a better proposition than being second class citizens despite holding the country's. :snack:

Not really. Holding a local passport means we can fight for the rights which are deemed missing, and living in the first world is definitely better than fleeing from a war zone where you have to get in line according to your race.

Foreigners in Ukraine will always have some problem with groups of locals. Doesn't matter it is war time or not. Even in peace era, we were asked not to visit certain places in Ukraine as it was too dangerous for us.

I remember some of your posts but it must have been 5+ years ago where you mentioned racism and hooliganism. Did you also date a Ukranian and got chased by thugs or am I mixing it up with another story?

TBH the place sounds like a bit of a mess and I don't know why Western Media is so keen to portray it as "civilised" or "European".

Ukrainian Diplomat Threatens Indian Students

After India abstained from United Nations Security Council resolution that criticised Russia’s action against Ukraine, the Ukrainian Ambassador to United Nations attempted to use stranded Indian students in Ukraine as a hostage to push the Modi government to reconsider its position on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Along with China and UAE, India had abstained from voting on the draft resolution that “deplored” Russia’s “aggression against Ukraine”. The draft Security Council resolution, sponsored by the US, said it demanded that Russia “immediately cease its use of force against Ukraine” and “immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders.

Sources have informed to the media that by abstaining, India had retained the option of reaching out to relevant sides to bridge the gap and find the middle ground with an aim to foster dialogue and diplomacy.

India, as a responsible global power, had stated that it is deeply disturbed by the recent turn of developments in Ukraine. The Indian government also urged that all efforts be made to cease violence and hostilities immediately.

“No solution can ever be arrived at the cost of human lives,” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Tirumurti had reiterated.

The Indian government has so far taken a neutral stand on the Ukraine-Russia crisis and has called both parties to adhere to UN Charter and international law while asking them to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

However, the prudent approach by the Indian government seems to have angered the Ukrainian government, which is now trying to use stranded Indian students studying in Ukraine as a ‘leverage’ against India.

On Friday, Ukrainian Ambassador indirectly threatened India for abstaining from voting against Russia at UNSC. Speaking at the UNSC emergence session, the Ukrainian Ambassador to United Nations Sergiy Kyslytsya issued a subtle threat by saying countries that abstained from voting should have thought before making a decision.

It's quite pathetic what the Ukrainian ambassador said and we can see the result now of Indian students being beaten, kicked, spat on and not allowed to cross the borders etc by Ukrainian troops.

These Indian kids are a major revenue source for Ukraine and for him to make a statement like what he did is pathetic.

An Indian student stuck in war-hit Ukraine's Sumy for last seven days complained that embassy officials are not responding to SOS calls and that students are left to eat stale food and walk kilometres in sub-zero temperatures. Mehtab, who goes by one name and is a student at Sumy University, slammed the government for taking action only after a student lost his life.

"Parents are calling, they are crying. We are stuck in Sumy. We are stuck in eastern parts of Ukraine. We are stuck for last 7 days, but no response. Kharkiv students are also stuck in Sumy...Naveen (student from Karnataka who died in shelling) would not have died. Now Indians are dying here. After that the government of India is taking action. Will the government of India take action after we die," Mehtab told NDTV in a video interview from Sumy.

When asked how many are stuck in Sumy, Mehtab said there are close to 800 students.

"Approximately 800. Not a single student has been evacuated from Sumy. It has been seven days and we are stuck here. I called embassy earlier, but they said the problem will be solved in two days. I called again after two days, there has been no response.

"We are drinking supply water, bacterial water and it's affecting my health. We are eating stale food," Mehtab said, adding he can hear blast sounds.

"We are helpless, very helpless. We know what we are suffering, how we are living here. Lots of my friends called me and are crying. They are beaten by the army. They have to walk 15 km in sub-zero temperatures," he said.

Mehtab pleaded for help from the Centre and had tough words for the Indian embassy in Ukraine.

"No one is responding, I called embassy many times, no response. What will students do. Very helpless," he said.

Back home, the returning students are being greeted with chants of "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and flowers.

"Now that we are here, we are being given this (rose). What is the point? What will we do with this? What would our families do if something happened to us there?" asked Divyanshu Singh, who returned home this afternoon.

Mr Singh said the government would not need to distribute flowers now if it had acted in time.

Videos have emerged showing Indian students being beaten, kicked and not allowed to board trains.

Nearly 18,000 Indians, mostly students, were in Ukraine before the Russian invasion started on February 24. Thousands have managed to reach home in evacuation flights.

Till March 8, India will fly over 45 evacuation flights from countries neighbouring Ukraine.

BBC news is showing an interview with Indiians and there are 1000 stuck in a certain city in Ukraine.

There are 1000 of them trapped with no food or water for two days now and are stranded.

They have received no help from Ukraine or India.

This is hell on earth for these people and despite the usual nonsense from the BJP it seems the Indian government is toothless.

I would request all Indian PPers to petition your local politicians if possible so that there is some pressure to get these innocent students back.

India urged to condemn Russia if it wants to be taken seriously

WASHINGTON: A senior US lawmaker has called upon India to condemn Russia if it wants to be taken seriously on the world stage.

At a recent emergency session of the UN General Assembly, 141 countries voted for a resolution condemning Russia and demanding immediate withdrawal of its troops from Ukraine. But 35 countries — including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh — abstained. Five, including Russia, voted against it.

The voting pattern came up for discussion at a hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee where a senior lawmaker, Ted Lieu, criticised New Delhi for abandoning democratic principles for appeasing Russia. “If India wants to be taken seriously on the world stage, if they want to be part of their family of democracies, they need to condemn Russia,” said Mr Lieu who is a co-chair of the House Committee for Democratic Policy and Communications.

“It’s not very hard to do. It’s not like we’re asking India to sanction Russia, just condemn them,” Mr Lieu added, noting that India “is a democracy that wants to be respected on the world stage” and yet it did not vote for the resolution.

“And what did they get in exchange? Russia gave India six hours to get Indian residents evacuated out of Ukraine, six hours. That’s what India got in exchange,” he said. “That’s a slap in the face to India.”

While the US is leading the western reaction to the war, India’s stand has been much more nuanced and it has refrained from calling out Russia as the villain. Instead, India’s constant mantra is to end the fighting and get back to diplomacy, as it struggles to bring Indian nationals home from the war zone.

Will India have to pay a price for taking an independent stand in keeping with its national interests? India has refused to condemn Russian action. The war in Europe has united the western world under American leadership as never before. The Cold war barriers are back with a vengeance and Washington expects its friends to stand up and be counted.

At the UN Security Council, New Delhi had abstained from the US and Albanian resolution against Russia. It has so far abstained four times at the UN, keeping its national interest in mind, despite tremendous pressure from Washington.

The question is how will this affect the future of India-US relations? Russia has been slapped with unprecedented sanctions, making it tough for any country to do business with Moscow. The US may not put boots on the ground in Ukraine but is waging a crippling economic war to isolate Russia. India relies on Russia for its military hardware. Will these deals get affected, especially the new agreements signed during Putin’s visit to India in December?

“This is an evolving situation, and we have to see what kind of impact the sanctions will have on our own interests,” said foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, at a news conference, last week. “We have to study this carefully because any sanctions will have an impact on our existing relationships. We have to acknowledge that factor.”

“US understands India’s compulsions and dependence on Russian equipment and desire to evacuate its citizens. And US India relations are stronger today than at any other time,” said Aparna Pandey of Washington-based Hudson Institute. She added, “The issue is, India for its own sake, needs to move away from such strong dependence on Russia.” India has been trying to do just that as in the last decade bought defence equipment worth over 20 billion dollars from the US.

India’s purchase of a five billion worth S-400 Russian missile system has been hanging like the proverbial Damocles sword over India. Turkey had been slapped with US sanctions for buying the same missile system. India says that negotiations for the system began much before the law against buying weapons from America’s enemies came into force in 2017. The US had not punished India with sanctions then but that could change now. Joe Biden and his administration may not want to do slap sanctions on a country that the US hopes to use to counter China’s rise in Asia.

Washington is aware that China is a major security concern for India, and for that, it needs both US and Russia on its side. India joined the US, Japan, Australia for the quad, mainly to ensure that China’s growing military and economic clout is checked around the Indian Ocean where the PLAs naval presence is growing by the day.

But the major threat that New Delhi faces from China is around its land border in Ladakh. Russia’s presence in the region helps to bolster Indian interests. Russian hardware is the backbone of Indian defence. Delhi and Moscow co-operate closely in Afghanistan. After the Taliban took control of Kabul, President Putin was on the phone with Prime Minister Modi calling for better coordination on Afghanistan. Yes, today China and Russia have excellent strategic relations and the current crisis will make Moscow more dependent on China. Yet India is confident that Russia will not act against India. It was clear when Russia quickly supplied much-needed spares to India during the 2020 military confrontation with China. Like India, Russia does not want China calling the shots in Asia.

“India has a relationship with Russia that is distinct from the relationship that we have with Russia,” Ned Price, US State Department spokesman said when asked about India’s abstention from the UNSC vote. Price said the two countries had “a very close relationship” and were in regular discussion about “our shared concerns.”

James O’Brien, President Biden’s point-person to oversee US sanctions policy at the State Department, was quoted as saying that the question of penalizing India would have to be weighed against the “important geostrategic considerations, particularly with the relationship to China.”

The Biden administration is aware of India’s compulsions. However, the President may have to give in to Congressional pressure if lawmakers push hard against India. With mid-term elections later in the year Biden may be persuaded by Democratic candidates standing for elections to act tough with India. As Pandey explains “While US government understands why India voted the way it did, the US public opinion and hence views in the Congress will be hurt by India’s stance and may have an impact on Congressional views on CAATSA sanctions,” she added.

Otherwise, it is unlikely that a President with decades of foreign policy experience will come down on India like a ton of bricks. He knows that it is better to have India on America’s side than push it into a closer bear hug. Yes, Washington will express its disappointment behind closed doors. But, chances of a dramatic change in India-US relations are unlikely.

For more than a week, an Indian doctor in war-torn Ukraine has been holed up in a basement at home with his pet big cats - a black panther and a jaguar.

Girikumar Patil, who bought the two cats from the Kyiv zoo, says he will not leave home without his pets. He has lived for over six years in Severodonetsk, a small town located in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.

After the war began, Mr Giri, who is single, has been stepping out of his cramped basement only to buy food for his cats - the male jaguar is 20 months old and the female panther is a six-month-old cub - after the curfew ends early in the morning. (The jaguar is a rare hybrid between a male leopard and a female jaguar, he said.)

So far, Mr Giri said he had bought 23kg of sheep, turkey and chicken meat from neighbouring villages at prices four times higher than normal.

"My big cats have been spending nights in the basement with me. There has been a lot of bombing happening around us. The cats are scared. They are eating less. I can't leave them," Mr Patil, 40, told the BBC.

"This is the second war I am living through. But this is scarier."

Mr Giri said he was earlier living in Luhansk, where Russian-backed rebels have been fighting Ukrainian troops since 2014 despite a ceasefire agreement. During the fighting in the region, his home and an Indian restaurant he opened in the area were destroyed, he said.

He then moved to Severodonetsk, about 100km (62 miles) away, bought a new place, began practising medicine and bought his new pets.

"Now I am stuck in a war zone. This time I am really worried. My parents have been calling me and asking me to come home, but I can't leave the animals," Mr Patil said.

Mr Patil, who hails from the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, said that he spent $35,000 (£26,460) to buy the panther and the jaguar from the Kyiv zoo about 20 months ago. He said the zoo allowed private sales of animals provided the owner had enough space to keep them - Mr Patil showed the birth certificates of the animals supplied by the zoo.

Mr Patil said he arrived in Ukraine in 2007 to study medicine. Since 2014, he has been a practising orthopaedic doctor and now works in a government hospital in Severodonetsk which was shut after the war began. He said he also does private practice.

In Severodonetsk, Mr Patil lives in a six-room two-storey house with a small enclosure for the animals. He said he spent most of his earnings on his pets - he also has three dogs - and tries to raise additional funds through his YouTube channels where he posts videos of his two big cats for some 85,000 subscribers.

"I have always been fascinated with big cats since watching my favourite southern Indian film star, Chiranjeevi, in a film with leopards," he said.

The son of a bank manager father and a school teacher, Mr Patil said he has always been an "animal lover", and kept dogs, cats and birds at home.

After high school and college, Mr Patil also dabbled in acting, doing small parts in Telugu soaps. In Ukraine, he said, he had done parts as a "foreign" character in half-a-dozen local films and series.

The border with Russia was barely 80km from home, Mr Patil said, but it was difficult to reach there because of Russian forces in the region. There had been intermittent power cuts and internet breakdowns in his neighbourhood, but he was able to post video messages on social media regularly.

"I am the only Indian out here, and at night I am alone in the neighbourhood. Most of my neighbours have moved to nearby villages. I am going to hold out," he said.

Under the current modi government, cozying up to totalitarians has become rather commonplace for Indian administrations. And with the absolute control over most media news outlets that are pretty garbage otherwise as well, people rarely hear the truths on the ground.

Read the news, don’t watch it on television because that is often a spectacle.

It’s a bloody language. That’s all! Dear god some of you are just off the deep end lately.

Yes it's a language, that is why I referred to it as a soft power, although some of the context may have been lost, it's been two weeks since that discussion.

Did India criticize Russia during the Crimea invasion? Guess who was the PM then. Guess what the Russians said.

Russia is India's security partner and India is not going to break that partnership for a war it has no stake in. Security and sovereignty of 1.4bn people is not a small matter.

Go out on the streets of India and you will find that most have a positive view of the Russians because of what they have done for India in the past.

You know why Modi keeps winning, because his opponents like you bowl full tosses like you did just now and it gets hit out of the park.

Indian who took up gun for Ukraine ‘wants to return’

R Sainikesh, a 21-year-old aerospace engineering student from Tamil Nadu who joined the Ukrainian paramilitary force to fight Russia, is set to return to his hometown in Coimbatore soon, his father Ravichandran said.
Sainikhesh was studying his final year of aerospace engineering at the National Aerospace University in Kharkiv, Ukraine, when, in February, he joined the Georgian National Legion, a paramilitary unit of volunteers. Sainikesh was rejected twice by the Indian Army because of his height.

“The central government officials are in touch with us and have promised us that they will trace our son and get him out soon,” 52-year-old Ravichandran said over the phone on Saturday. He said he contacted Sainikesh three days ago and his son agreed to return to India soon. And his son soon agreed to return to India. “I have not been able to talk to him for the last three days. The authorities have asked us to get in touch with them anytime. We hope that our son will be evacuated from Ukraine soon. Media reports should not affect his return to India.
However, a police officer said, “When his parents asked Sainikesh to return to India, he did not respond properly. They did not contact the Indian embassy in Ukraine when the war broke out. His address in the war zone was It’s not easy to set up.”

Lets hope he returns safe back to his family.

Sure he was a student in Ukraine but not sure why he felt he could fight in a war, esp when the Indian army rejected him previously.

NEW DELHI, March 14 (Reuters) - India may take up a Russian offer to buy crude oil and other commodities at a discount, two Indian officials said, in a sign that Delhi wants to keep its key trading partner on board despite Western attempts to isolate Moscow through sanctions.

U.S. officials have said in recent weeks they would like India to distance itself from Russia as much as possible, while recognising its heavy reliance on Moscow for everything from arms and ammunitions to missiles and fighter jets. read more

India has not condemned the invasion of Ukraine and abstained from voting at the United Nations calling out Russia's aggression. Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a "special operation" to demilitarise and "denazify" the country.

One person within India's security apparatus said the West understood India's position, given that it needs to keep its armed forces well supplied amid simmering territorial disputes with China.

India, which imports 80% of its oil needs, usually buys only about 2-3% from Russia. But with oil prices up 40% so far this year, the government is looking at increasing this if it can help reduce its rising energy bill.

"Russia is offering oil and other commodities at a heavy discount. We will be happy to take that," one of the Indian government officials said.

The official added that such trade required preparatory work including transportation, insurance cover and getting the right blend of crude, but once that was done India would take Russia up on its offer.

The officials, who declined to be identified, did not say how much oil was on offer or what the discount was.

The finance ministry did not reply to an email seeking comment.

Reuters has reported that Indian officials are trying to set up a rupee-rouble mechanism with Russia to continue bilateral trade.

Russia has urged what it describes as friendly nations to maintain trade and investment ties.

Apart from oil, India is also looking for cheaper fertiliser from Russia and its ally Belarus, according to one of the officials.

'COMPLICATED HISTORY'

Indian officials said they could not suddenly replace Russia with other suppliers, particularly in the defence sector.

India's dependence on Russia for its military hardware still runs as high as 60%, despite a significant reduction over the last decade.

U.S. officials have declined to say if India would be sanctioned should Russia send S-400 missile systems as part of a $5.5 billion deal signed in 2018 for five of them.

Initial supplies of the system started late last year despite a U.S. law aimed at deterring countries from buying Russian military hardware.

Ely Ratner, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, told a U.S. Congress hearing last week that India was diversifying its defence suppliers.

"We recognise that India has a complicated history and relationship with Russia. The majority of the weapons that they buy are from the Russians," he said.

"The good news is that they are in a multi-year process of diversifying their arms purchases away from Russia - that's going to take some time. But they are clearly committed to doing that, including the indigenisation of their own defence industry and that's something we should support."

British Foreign Minister Liz Truss also said last week that London should pursue closer economic and defence ties with India to help it reduce its reliance on Russia.

Since 2011, New Delhi has cut its defence imports from Russia by 53%.

D. Bala Venkatesh Varma, a former Indian ambassador to Russia, said New Delhi should not be expected to pay a price for a standoff between global powers.

"This is not a fight we have created," he told an online seminar on Monday.

India is not part of this war. Why should we care?

If US wants India to be part of these sanctions, then India should ask that US and its allies sanction pakistan. No?

The only thing that matters is India's interest and that lies in not putting all the eggs in the US basket.

Never trust them. They will use you and you will be left to pick up the pieces.

India has the chance to do this deal and then wave the democracy and China card at the west. Theydon sanction you. Soon.this news will vanish too.

It is a new dawn in the region. Let's hope all our countries can take advantage and prevent any catastrophe the powers that be may want..

US + EU are more than 50% of world GDP. What you are saying sounds short sighted, shallow and impractical to me. You need to know your limits before you pick a fight. Look at Russia right now, begging to China for military and economic support. We dont want to be there.

Russia is not begging china for military support. Thats planted news.

India China Russia UAE Saudi these countries clearly have no intention of supporting these sanctions. MBS and MBZ even refused to speak to Biden.

These are major markets and major oil producers.

US sanctioned Venezuela and Iran, so we stopped buying their oil. Now Europe can buy Russian oil and gas, but India shouldn't? Why?

We are not a US colony and don't intend to be either. If we had feared US sanctions we won't be a nuclear power today.

If it is oil, yes we can buy from them. We cant evade general sanctions. While it may be correct in principal it will cost you in terms of trade and access to western goods and technology some of which are exclusive. eg. homegrown Tejas fighter use GE engines. ISRO satellites use American silicon chips and sensors. Even homegrown antivaccine relies on manufacturing materials and equipment from US. The list is endless. You have to pick your battles and cant be blindly jingoistic.

^further, look how access to AIM-120, F-16s (with their jamming and SDL capabilities) gave an edge to PAF in feb 2019 while we are left to celebrate dodging AMRAAMs and consolation return of Abhinandan. Even during the China incursions, its the American C-17s & C-130s thats helping you mobilize quickly whereas Russian equipment is falling short even against a vastly inferior Ukraine army.

If US will sanction India they will just make sure India becomes a permanent friend of Russia and China.

GE engines can be replaced by Safran core Kaveri engines.

US banned Super computers for India, today we make our own.

Every thing has a alternative and we are not going to be dictated by US.

None of the Amraams came even close to a mki. And India isnt even interested in it. Astra is equal to any 120C5 Amraam.

Russians are pulverizing the ukranians.

You are discounting a deterministic shoot-first advantage in air combat by your mere ability to defend/evade. if Su-30 was able to shoot first, it would be the f-16 running away and not looming on your radar. For that matter, apart from su-30, not many IAF aircraft might have been able to evade the missiles.

Astra: Where is it?
Arjun: what is the status?
Kaveri?
LCA Tejas? (mk1a, mk2 - all paper fun)
Can we even make a rifle? INSAAS?

If you get sold on DRDO/HAL sweet talk, we would be walked over by China and Pakistan many times over.

Just based on capacity, Russia should have walked over Ukraine in 5-7 days. Here we are at day 18 - Russia short on ammo, food, tanks stuck in mud and shot by american javelins, aircrafts shot by Stingers since they dont have enough PGM stock to fire from a high altitude.

Yes they do. Check what is Safran.

No. India rather became self sufficient in super computers. US also banned cryogenic engines. Again we built it ourselves.

If we feared US sanctions, we wouldn't be a nuclear power.

United States President Joe Biden’s campaign to unite the globe against the Russian invasion of Ukraine is being challenged not only by adversaries such as China but also by the world’s most populous democracy, India.

An Indian government official said on Friday that the country will increase its imports of Russian oil, allowing it to boost energy supplies at a discount as its economy struggles to recover from the coronavirus pandemic. The official, who was not authorised to talk to reporters and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the latest purchase was three million barrels.

Although India is not alone in buying Russian energy — several European allies such as Germany have continued to do so — the decision conflicts with Biden’s efforts to isolate Russia’s economy with sanctions.

The increased flow of oil could further strain the relationship between Washington and New Delhi, which has already been tested by India’s recent procurement of advanced Russian air defence systems.

The White House is still considering whether to enact sanctions on India for that purchase. The issue is being looked at with a “different spin” following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a US official familiar with the Biden administration’s deliberations. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal decision-making.

The oil deal is a reminder of how the war in Ukraine has created a complicated geopolitical balancing act for Biden. Even as he tries to rally countries to oppose Russia’s invasion, he also sees India as a critical partner for countering China’s rising influence in Asia.

Russia has long been a point of friction in US-India relations, but the White House believes the two democracies have more that’s in common than that divides them.

India is a member of the Quad, an international partnership that also includes the US, Australia and Japan, and the leaders of all four nations are slated to meet this year in Tokyo.

Although Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a checkered record on human rights, he was invited to participate in Biden’s virtual summit on democracy in December.

During the summit, Biden described the struggle between democracy and autocracy as the “defining challenge of our time.” Modi said that India “stands ready to join fellow democracies in this noble endeavour”.

The White House has publicly warned China against siding with Russia during the war in Ukraine, but it has been more circumspect when addressing India’s role.

Asked Wednesday how the US was working with India, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said “we remain in touch through a range of channels.”

On the previous day, when asked about India considering buying discounted Russian oil, Psaki said the US message to “any country” is to “think about where you want to stand when the history books are written.”

Imports make up 85 percent of India’s oil needs, and its overall demand is projected to jump 8.2 percent to 5.15 million barrels per day this year.

Indian media reports said that Russia was offering a 20 percent discount on oil purchases below global benchmark prices.

“We are exploring all possibilities in the global energy market,” India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi said Thursday. “I don’t think Russia has been a major oil supplier to India.”

India’s relationship with Russia revolves more around defence than energy. Russia provides only a small fraction of India’s oil but the majority of its military hardware.

“It’s critical for India’s military readiness, especially as they have an ongoing border crisis with China,” said Richard Rossow, an expert on the US-India relationship at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, which is based in Washington. Twenty Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers died less than two years ago in an ongoing territorial dispute over eastern Ladakh.

India abstained from a United Nations Security Council vote condemning the invasion of Ukraine, and the Russian embassy in New Dehli responded by saying it “highly appreciate(s) India’s independent and balanced position”.

Ken Juster, a former US ambassador to India, said the South Asian nation “believes in strategic autonomy” and is unlikely to line up neatly on either side in conflicts between the East and the West.

However, he expects New Delhi to face additional pressure as the war in Ukraine continues.

“India is going to face an increasingly challenging situation as Russia’s atrocities become more apparent and more widespread,” he said. “It’s going to be difficult for any country not to come out and condemn this.”

Biden has described the situation as a work in progress.

Shortly after Russia’s invasion began, Biden was asked if India is “fully in sync” with the US on Russia.

He responded that “we’re in consultation” with India, adding that “we haven’t resolved that completely.”

So Migration and Surrender in War is same thing...soory SUPPOSED surrender 😂😂

India is doing the right thing here as USA should be the last country to talk about morals. USA have even turned to Venezuela for oil, not long ago they warned everyone with severe consequences if they ordered oil from Venezuela. And they are also thinking about lifting sanctions against Iran for their oil. Yeah morality...

I am quite surprised that India hasn't bent to US pressure so far. Seems like they still don't trust western intentions fully despite all the flirting and batting of eyelashes for commercial purposes.

And they are also thinking about lifting sanctions against Iran for their oil. Yeah morality...

India will buy 500bpd of russian oil at a 28 per cent discount.

India is setting up a mechanism to buy Iranian oil too.

India is too important of a player, Americans need India for the Quad to counter China and both Americans & Indians know sanctioning Indians would be a diabolical move.

As I stated a month or so ago, Indians can have their cake and eat it too, an envious position to be in for the 'time being'...

You know why Modi keeps winning, because his opponents like you bowl full tosses like you did just now and it gets hit out of the park.

where did you get this from?

is there some form of consolidated sovereign defense force which gets invoked the moment either security partnership member is attacked?

is there some form of unified defense base? a cross pollination of forces? some join task force? some unified fund that can be accessed in time of need?

russia is nothing but a grocery store and a gas station for india - we buy weapons and occasionally we get some technology exchange. and yes we buy oil from them.

being beholden to your grocery store is the most pathetic, foolish decision ever.

india's defense partner is its economic connection to the two largest consumers of indian economic output: united states, and western europe. fcuk with that relationship and the house of cards that the current economic growth is based on, will come crashing down.

I get this from almost every indian defense expert who has appeared on this issue.

India has over 60 per cent of its defence equipment from Russia and depends on it for its maintenance and further acquisition. Russia is also not a sanction happy supplier like US.

Russia also supplies India with cutting edge strategic platforms like a Nuke Sub

Russia has been a constant support to India at the UNSC and vetoed anti Indian proposals.

It was Russia that set up the 1st nuclear power plant in Kundakulam.

This is not a buyer seller relation.

The US and the west don't do us any favours in economic terms. Its a trading partnership. France is an exception.

Only a fool will give up a strategic ally for a trading partner.

Agreed.

Whilst India Russia relationship is a very special one, for example; Russians were the only country that gave India nuclear Submarine technology etc.

However, I believe it is crucial the Tejas and AMCA programs needs to be persisted with, if we can become self independent on fighter jet technology we would not need to be over reliant on the Russians to service the jets and spare parts etc..

Also @ The Great Khan, if you can also respond.
