Where does Misbah-ul-Haq rank as a one day batsman / one day captain?

Now that his one day career is over, a thread to discuss Misbah's overall performance as a one day player and as captain :-

Looking at the numbers, he finished as Pakistan's 11th highest runscorer in ODIs with an average of 43.40. He made 42 fifties but of course failed to make a one day century. His ODI average is higher than Saeed Anwar, Inzamam, Yousuf and Javed Miandad, amongst others.


As captain his records stands as 87 matches, 45 wins, 39 losses, 2 ties and one no result. A win percentage of 53.48%.

So, where does he rank in Pakistani cricketing circles as a batsman and as a captain?

What do you feel were his strengths and weaknesses, what he did well and what he didn't do so well?
 
Outside of the top 5-6 as a captain and as a batsman.

ODI average and SR shouldn't be compared across era. The best way is to compare them with their peers. That has some flaw as well but gives you a much better picture of where he stands among Pakistani batsmen and captains.
 
Poor one day captain tbh. He did well in this World Cup though in terms of tactics and approach but too little too late.
 
A decent batsman, but not great. He has a nice average, but his strike rate is awful for this day and age. I do admire his firm leadership though.
 
He should have been played more earlier in his career. Certainly he should have played in the place of YK for instance.

He was a more attractive batsman to watch earlier in his career too. He had a pretty good strike rate back then.

As a captain, he had a few memorable series - the wins against SA and India. But overall he was a poor ODI captain and his team selections were poor as well.
 
Decent batsman but nowhere close to our best. If I have to rank our ODI batsman, it would be

1. Anwar
2. Inzamam
3. Yousuf = Miandad
4. Ijaz Ahmed
5. Hafeez
6. Malik
7. Misbah

As a captain, he wasnt a great tactician but his personality and man management skills were outstanding. I'd rank him 3rd after Wasim and Imran
 
As an ODI batsman: 6/10

Pretty decent scorer but hardly a threat to any team. His strike rotation is awful and the fact that even after hitting loads of 6s he only strikes at 70 something shows what an extremely awful tuk tuk player he is, which only adds pressure on the other batsmen. Sure thats another thing the other players in his side are already poor despite pressure or no pressure and would throw their wickets away anyway. Its not that Umar Akmal becomes Andrew Symonds when Misbah rotates strike well. Misbah wouldn't find a place in any top batting team in the world.

As a captain: 8/10

I don't think there is anything like an ODI captain or a test captain. A leader is a leader regardless and just because one formats results aren't matching with another format doesn't make him a different leader. Take MSD for example, he's no better leader in ODIs than he is in tests its just that he plays with a generation of players that excel more at ODIs than tests.
 
I would say as an ODI batsman 5/10 as a Captain 7/10

I thought as a batsman, Misbah started his come back really well, I cannot forget the way he played during that 2007 ICC WT20 but as time went on Misbah could not continue his style of batting, he couldn't rotate strike, he had a very one dimensional game and I thought he was a player of the 90's undoubtedly. A very good player of the 90's but a very poor player of the 2010's, some people may say he played according to the circumstances but honestly Misbah never changed his game even if he came in at 100/2 or 150/2, and even at 10/2 there was never a word called "Counter Attack" in his dictionary as a batsman.

As a captain I thought the best thing about him was his calmness, he never lost control, he handled the media very well, he handled his players very well, it is not easy captaining a side like Pakistan but I think Misbah did a pretty good job at it. Players respected him, The results were good at times, were bad at times, but that is just one criteria, I think Overall Misbah was a fairly good leader.
 
As a captain in ODI's, he has been relatively poor and in the WC we did see an improvement, but far too late into his tenure.

As a batsman, I would like to see how Pak plays without his services before judging.
 
A good batsman, and our best in last four years. He is nothing compared to other ODI greats of Pakistan in the past.


He is an average captain apart from World Cup 2015 performance. He was excellent in this cup, attacking captaincy. Too late I say otherwise never liked his captaincy.
 
Two things that numbers and stats can't capture.

1 - He was an honest guy for a captain who stayed away from team politics and groupings. Didn't have off the field controversies and never portrayed a childish and immature attitude. Maintained a good and diplomatic relations with the board, coaches, selectors and team's auxiliary staff. Hats off !!

2 - As a batsman, severely lacked the ability to launch a counter punch to release the pressure. He also severely lacked the ability to rotate the strike - which is another way to release the pressure.

He almost always came in pressure and almost always had only one way to respond to pressure. There was an excuse that nobody stayed with him on the wicket, and I am not ready to buy it.

I always thought that once in a while, as a leader if he had attacked back, the fellow batsman on the other end would have also taken the lead and confidence to play aggressively instead of "pulling his hair out".

Over all, I think his positives outweigh his negatives. I will happily give this to him.

BUT his short comings simply cannot be ignored when looking for future prospect. Modern day ODI is not fit for Misbah's playing style.

It's possible that the new kids will find it hard in the next year or so but eventually they will learn how to play without Misbah.

This team has played without Misbah and it has won without Misbah, so as harsh as it may sound, I think Misbah won't be missed.

However, the problem is, we have created a big vacuum where Misbah, Afridi and Ajmal are suddenly all gone from ODI. (Ajmal may come back as an ineffective againg bowler blocking way for Yasir Shah)

With these three out, we have taken a nose dive and stooped down to Bangladesh level - so we will need to learn quickly and effectively.



Post Misbah, ideally we should hire a player who could play aggressively and defensively so that a good mix of leadership effect trickles down to the team members.
And as we all know, we don't have such an ideal candidate.

Folks have talked about Azhar Ali, and I do NOT agree with it. He is another Misbah in making. And we need better.

Our best bet (again, these names may not be justified for captaincy based on numbers and stats - who does, by the way? - but they have the ability to bring down a good leadership effect on team members) are Asad Shafiq and Fawad Alam for captain and vice captain.
 
A decent/good batsman and an average captain. Although I must give him credit for his attacking captaincy in this world cup.
 
ODI batsman: Obviously one of the better Pakistani batsmen, which does not mean much by itself. He will struggle to enter any of the top batting sides at any slot. He is one of the few ODI batsmen who does not accelerate even after getting fifties, with the result that he never got a 100. His best ODI innings have come at run a ball and even those knocks are far and few between. For a batsman who hits a lot of sixes, his scoring rates are abysmally low. Even after accounting for lack of good support batsmen at the other end, he is still an average ODI batsman. But Pakistan will miss him big time and unless someone fills his mighty shoes Pakistan may struggle to get 200 consistently.

ODI captain: Probably the third best captain after Dhoni and Baz. He managed an average side pretty well inspite of blanket ban on home matches.
 
A very good batsman and our third best captain after Imran and Wasim. Just a shame he only really got into the team at 33. He should have been in the team a lot earlier. I would have loved to have seen him, Youhana and Inzi in the same team.
 
A good batsman given the circumstances but an average captain.

Batsman 7.5/10

Captaincy 6/10.
 
Honestly I expected his record to be much poor. A 50+ Win% is a sign of a decent leader. Given his resources as well, it actually is a pretty good achievement. And yet he gets slated as if Pak didn't do much under him.

Record against non-minnows put his W/L in 0.65. I am not judging him based on W/L here but it should be seen in context if you want to give him credit based on W/L.

A limited batsman who did well with his rubbish batting line up and poor management plus team....

A calm captain again heading a rubbish unit , some with egos.

overall a very decent player and captain and his services cannot be ignored
 
Batsman 7/10

Did a fairly good job with the bat kept the innings together most of the time, the S/R doesn't tell the whole story when you look at how often our line up has collapsed. When he was dismissed against Australia, I was up watching the game around 4am in the UK and I just went to sleep because I knew the game was lost then. He'd have given us something to defend, 213 was just not enough. Plus when Misbah anchors the innings he gives others the platform to launch and he plays his shots himself when the element of risk is not so much and the storm has been weathered.

Captain 8/10 (Boosted by his performance in this WC the tournament that matters most)

Sure he has some big wins but in general has been very defensive, he rather give singles away for free due to his fear of boundary being hit. Besides that his man management skills have been top notch as has been his conduct and that of his team in dark times. His captaincy in this World Cup has been fantastic though especially in the last 4 games, bowling changes were very good and field tactics, kept us in the tournament.

So, where does he rank in Pakistani cricketing circles as a batsman and as a captain?

As a Captain, the best we have ever had. I reckon Imran would have given up on our hacks, Misbah made the best of poor circumstances in terms of our talent quality and obstacle of overcoming no home games/spot-fixing humiliation.

As a Batsman, probably in the bottom half of our top 10.

don't think he was up there with the likes of amla, AB, Dohni's or kohli's and i don't agree that he could walk into any batting lineup or is one of the ATG's and rest of the stuff his fans come up with.

by Pakistani standards he was decent captain and batsmen don't think he will be missed much.
 
As a batsman he would rank below dhawan, raina & no-hit imo in terms of impact.
 
As a package considering what he inherited, I rate him as one of the best. Second only to Imran Khan.
 
As a captain, I would rate him after IK. He accepted the role when the team was in diar straits. The way he handled giant egos like Afridi and kept his calm would be a testament to his character. We had great cricketers in history but Sachin Tendulkar was known to have enormous talent and someone who actually did justice to his talent. Misbah was never as talented as the greats of the game but he can hold his head high in fulfilling his talent despite his obvious flaws. His love for the game even at the age of 40 is also second only to the little master. Sachin carried Indian batting throughout the 90's and Misbah did the same for the last 5 years. Call me crazy but I consider Misbah to be one of the 3 greatest batsmen that pakistan has produced. One failure of Misbah is to change the batting culture in the team despite his best efforts. Not even a single idiot in the team knows how to build an innings despite watching Misbah day in and day out. Pakistan will miss him as a captain who could perform under pressure. Pakistan will miss Misbah the batsman even more because there is no one in the team now that can hold one end. Good Bye Old friend. Your team and your country don't deserve you. They will know your value only when you are gone.
 
probably one of the pakistani greats as a captain. brought a sense of calm and direction to pakistan after a whole host of corrupt captains like butt, yousef, wasim etc

top 10 as a batsman - cool and calm. wasn't really able to express himself due to the fact that the pakistani line up was really poor for most of his career,
 
He is average batsman at the best.

As a captain he was negative , maybe 6 th in Top 10 pakistan captains.
 
An average ODI batsman... was unable to rotate strike... excessive blocking built up undue pressure... Also, a lot of people may disagree, but he played a major part in losing us the World Cup Semi-Final against India in 2011 because of his excessive blocking and inability to take singles...5/10

A very defensive and negative captain with no strategies and planning... the results show (see a summary below)... 3/10

1. Led us to a first round elimination in 2013 ICC Champions trophy (we could not win a single match)
2. Led us to quarter final elimination in 2015 ICC World Cup
3. In four years, could not form / mould a settled batting unit

Really sorry to say this... and I know there are a lot of Misbah fans out there... but the truth is after 4 years... Misbah has lost us both ICC tournaments... ICC Champions trophy and ICC World Cup 2015... To put it in simple words for everyone to understand, he lost when it mattered the most...

People say he brought a lot of calm to Pakistan cricket... Well being calm in the face of losing important events is no good...

I don't understand why people keep harping on about his useless average and hail him as savior of Pakistan cricket...

I hope we can look forward now and quickly recover from the negativity and defensive attitude instilled by Misbah in the ODI team.. and I certainly hope that PCB learns its lessons and plans properly for the next world cup... We do not need short term victories... we need a long term settled team that can be good enough for an ICC tournament...
 
Just not a ODI player he has regressed Pakistan ODI cricket by years under his captaincy Pakistan has become a timid & loss of Pakistani fire brand aggressive approach.

Second or third best captain in ODIs. Second best captain in Tests.

If you also consider the quality of players Misbah has had at his disposal, it'll become very interesting.

Highly underrated.
 
Does Misbah deserve accolades as an ODI player and captain?

Here's a time machine, now go 4-5 years back and check the headlines on sports websites, threads on PakPassion, one theme is prevalent: Misbah.

Misbah for all the flak he got for that fateful scoop shot in the T20 World Cup final and his slow innings in the 2011 World Cup semi final, seemed like an invincible player all of a sudden, the lone warrior, who won the Indian, South African series, along with the Asia cup to his name.

The Pakistani captain was often seen stranded on the other end as mediocre batsmen such as Hafeez, Imran farhat, Kamran Akmal, Asad Shadique all fell around him, this led the fans to believe that he was a worthy batsman, a fighter, despite him never actually doing much other than scoring 40s, 50s with a strike rate of 60-70.

The last sentence leads me to believe that he was in fact overrated as a player and as a captain. A good player is one that does not look to hide in a shell. A cornered tiger does not hide behind rocks and trees as hunters begin to circle it. No, the tiger leaps up and shreds the attackers to pieces, although it is risky, it shows that the tiger is a fighter that will survive whatever little chance it has.

Him winning all these matches and series also comes under doubt as in his disposal he had the help of Saeed Ajmal, an off spinner and "doosra" maestro who bamboozled batsmen of the highest calibre with his illegal deliveries. Hafeez was also in the scene, creating pressure with his darts which were also later found out to be illegal.

Without a doubt, Misbah would not have won as many matches with these 2 chuckers, as their incredible averages, wickets, and economy rates are a testament to this. As a test captain he would also have an inferior record, as Ajmal played a pivotal role for his country from 2012-2014.

Granted that the ICC was an incompetent and scared council during this period, or that umpires did not want to engulf themselves in controversy, or perhaps not looking to upset people by targeting bowlers with illegal actions, it still should not hide the fact on what was done. A bowler could have bowled legally during the testing process then gone back to illegal bowling quite easily.

In conclusion, I feel that negative and slow batting and two chuckers have somewhat tarnished Misbah's reputation as an ODI player and captain. He does not deserve the accolades that were once showered upon him. All of this comes from a neutral fan.
 
The past 2 years have of ODIS have been a complete repudiation of the Misbah method.

His test achievements are great

in ODIs less said the better
 
even in tests the team is ranked 6th when he left

should have retired when pak was number 1, tarnished his own legacy
 
It is poor because even though he benefited from the services of a Pre 15 degree Ajmal and Hafeez, his ODI rankings were no 7 when he left the team and he had 4 long years at the helm.
 
Why are we even talk about him. He left ODI post ICC World Cup 2015 and we had enough time to change our mindset...get over with him and focus on what we have and what we will be having.
 
Strike rate of 73. Average batsmen in this format . Too defensive & similar in captaincy .
 
One of the worst odi bat and captain, and I am not saying this as an Indian, misbah was one of the most likeable players to come out of pakistan but he wasn't good enough in the limited overs format
 
I don't understand why Pakistani fans bash him so much but I haven't followed his career enough to know his faults..

However in India vs pak matches the only batsmen who I feared was Misbah.. He had the reputation and skill to hit big sixes of spinners and after the 2007 WC final where he nearly won the WC for Pakistan hitting Bhajji for 3 sixes that reputation grew..

All other batsmen in Pakistani team during Misbah's era never had that reputation..
 
Ranks at the top! He was truly a modern day great with the good old school qualities. If he wasn't surrounded by failures we would've seen a more aggressive approach from him. His sixes were legendary

And he surrounded himself with failures, Not giving persistent chances to you plauers and backing Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Kamran Akmal and co.

Even Islamabad United (His PSL Team) is full of oldies, Riffatullah got more chances than a young player like Hussain Talat. :facepalm:
 
People confuse odi and test . In test he was decent or may be good but in odi apart from one two series he was downright atrocious and I am not talking about w/l ratio, he used to play same team against Zimbabwe and WI really was very bad , recycling old player was another bad tactics.
 
One of the worst ODI captain. Although he was a decent bat considering the pak team
 
An Ok (max 7/10) ODI batsman.

But a very good ODI captain (min 8/10). He managed to keep Pakistan competitive with likes of JK/Irfan/Wahab/Ajmal/Hafeez/Bhatti/Cheema etc. Won an ODI series in SA/India.

Better than AB De V of course.
 
A poor ODI player overall I would say. As a captain he utilized the UAE conditions well due to his use of spin trio of Ajmal, Afridi and Hafeez. Besides that one plan of choking the opposition through spin he had no idea how to captain. He could not guide fast bowlers on what he needed from them and unfortunately he never had a good enough pace department. The main issue with Misbah was he was content with being the best in UAE and just being ahead of mid level teams like Srilanka, West Indies or Bangladesh. He did not really challenge the likes of Australia or England which is my biggest criticism of him. The team remained where it was therefore. No real development.

His batting was solid, but he did not win enough games for Pakistan. Just not a right fit for this era. SR a major issue especially him being a no. 5 bat.

For Misbah poor Strike Rate hurt his reputation as ODI batsman badly. Its becomes more apparent because even rest of the teammates (on an average) scored at 10% faster Strike rate than him.
 
Batsman was 6/10

Captain 1/10. Never knew what kind of players to select and which do not fit the bill. Had his favourites and struck with them time and again without trying fresh faces for sufficient matches. Even in dead rubbers (Indian series, Zimbabwe series, etc), he would not change a single player for the risk of worsening his W/L!

Coward and poor tactician as a captain. Worst we've had
 
average batsman who looked better in a very poor lineup. Was a good hitter against spinners but couldnt rotate the strike and couldnt hit the pacers. which is why he never got an ODI 100. He couldnt hit out against pacers at the end of the innings and would always end up holeing out for a 70 off 100.

Was an ok captain but was saved by Ajmals brilliance a lot of the time. And the amount of times we choked manageable chases was a joke
 
One of the worst captains and average batsman who played for his average irrespective of match situation.

He robbed likes of Shoaib Malik, Haris Sohail, Umar Amin and co a good part of their career, By not selecting them or not utilizing them well enough.

His support for his buddies like Azhar, Hafeez, Oldies of Faislabad Wolves is well documented, Overall a negative contribution to Pakistan cricket and on top of that he has set benchmark of retiring at 40+ :facepalm:
 
at the bottom as the poorest ODI captain of all yes even Azhar and sachin had a reason to back their poor performances as captain. He failed to build a team in 4 years. His batting had no intent and avg is so-so made of his slow fifties that doesn't help a win and more helping to lose.
 
A decent captain and average batsmen. His ability to rotate strike was poor and he was too cautious. Should have backed his ability to clear the boundary vs spin more.
 
Selfish terrible Odi player who left us with a recommendation of azhar as captain and a tuk tuk mentality in the team. Thank god he is gone. Every captain left a heir and his was tuk tuk azhar
 
An overrated man-manager who selected his Golden Oldies yet some people support him because he is a decent person who is calm. Well sorry to say folks, sportsmanship does not win matches.
 
The first sensible and aware captain who knew what he was doing and what his resources were since Wasim Akram, but saying that, Wasim's team had a lot of raw talent and experienced superstars alongwith arguably the greatest pace combination of and ODI. Considering that, what Misbah did with this team of nincompoops, has been brilliant. I fondly remember the match in UAE against SL, when they were cruising to a victory but Afridi triggered the collapse and their whole team fell for 35/8 or something. A captain that used his resources to the fullest, I had every bit of faith in him when he was on the field marshalling his troops that a wicket is just around the corner. You don't get this feeling with all captains, especially Azhar, Yousaf, Inzi, Afridi(WC 2011 was a fluke, that was prime afridi whose instincts worked and the whole team fed off his energy)

Saying that, he was a brilliant captain. As a batsman, I feel his best years were missed by giving the likes of Younis Khan, Faisal Iqbal and Yasir Hameed chances instead of him. But even in the twilight of his career, he always punched above his weight, until he was there, there was always a hope that we will be able to get a respectable total and our bowling might give us a chance. So overall I highly enjoyed seeing him at the helm and as a batsman as well who was our best during that time.
 
As a batsman, he was above average for Pakistan. As a captain, he was right up there with the greats. Captain cool.

This kind of thinking is the reason why we are at the bottom of the rankings (whatever the merits of the ranking system might be). Instead of learning from our mistakes and looking at things as they are, we try to glorify those who cause us the most damage because they seem to present a veneer of respectability in the eyes of those whose thinking is limited to short-term gratification instead of long-term development. The damage that has been done to our cricket is almost beyond words. It is not merely about rankings or victories/defeats, but about Pakistan cricket losing its soul. We have lost our Identity. We have lost what made us special. We have lost our fighting spirit. We lost what made us who were are!

Post the 2011 World cup we have been completely lost. This should not be brushed under the carpet, just because a nice person was in charge. Imran Khan instilled a philosophy of fighting like corned tigers. Of Playing to Win and not playing merely not to lose. This approach and philosophy became the identity of Pakistan as cricketing nation. It was our brand and most importantly our soul. We have given that up and at what cost. We use to be feared but now we are the ones that are afraid. Our players use to be brave, but now they are meek. We use to be strong, but now we are weak.

His strike ratr when he took over as captain is even worse. It was around 63 last time I checked. Dreadful player and below average captain who destroyed the look of original Pakistan cricket and instilled timid and coward approach we see in most our batsmen today.

I mean you see glimpse of Misbah in Hafeez and Azhar's batting and Misbah was master of such selfish and pathetic knocks to boost his career stats and save his captaincy on the basis of captain cool scoring. That was era Pak fans were not aware of the ever changing ODI format and used to defend pathetic 230 scorea with captain taking half the innings trying to score his selfish 50.
 
Those who downplay him as ODI batsman must go and see his 2007 innings. Probably the finest modern-day batsman I know Pakistan. What we saw post 2011 was a shadow of him, yet he outclassed all of his batting-peers. That was his class.

As a captain. He had flaws of being over-defensive at times. But understood the game better than any of his mates and he utilized his limited resources to the best of his abilities. Probably among the best 3 Pakistani captains I know for LOC.

And he didn't leave any young talent even thou he was in charge for an extended period

Even Afridi and Younus found youngsters for Pakistan
 
It's not really his responsibility to find a captain. It's up to PCB to groom one. Since Inzi left, the PCB has been like a chicken with its head cut off.
