Not to mention the CT final where he failed, a tournament that was on the verge of being scrapped for the last 10 years. That automatically disqualifies him from being mentioned as a great batsman, no matter how much he has done after that match or how much more he does in the future.

I'll reserve final judgement on Kohli after his decline and retirement. Timing retirement is another facet of being great. I've seen too many cricketers come to bat and know they will at least get a 50, only to see them gradually become walking wickets. He has what it takes though.

What pressure? India lead by almost 300 when he came out to bat. I suppose when he was scoring these runs with India 2 down for nothing, there was no pressure?

He really is an excellent bat and has taken his game in tests to an altogether different level.

Not many guys will average 55+ in Australia and SA and while that average can go down by the time he retires, he has been fantastic till now in most of the away tours except one that was in England 2014. What else can we expect?

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara believes that he could be one of the greatest ever cricketers.

“Everything about Virat’s game stands out. I think he is head and shoulders above anyone else in world cricket today. And I think going forward, he will be one of the greatest ever cricketers, if not the greatest ever,” Sangakkara told India Today.

Sangakkara added that Kohli has a knack of scoring runs and reads situations very well.

“He has this incredible knack of scoring runs and has a very very solid method that he believes in and is very repeatable and if you see the tempo which he bats with, it hardly changes. He does read the situation very well. He is a very passionate guy, you see that in his expressions on the field so I think it’s not just one aspect, it’s the overall aspect of both the person and how he has sorted his batting and his attitude,” Sangakkara said.

Virat Kohli, who was rested for the last two ODIs and the T20 series against New Zealand, will be back for Australia’s tour of India, which starts on February 24.

Can he though? He's already 30 and has the highest workload of any cricketer currently, possibly in cricket history. This WC was supposed to be his prime time.

New Zealand series has raised some questions on Virat Kohli's legacy as a test batsmen. It was a poor series for him but I am sure he will get back to form and start scoring a lot of runs more in test cricket.

He is clearly not at the level of Tendulkar and Gavaskar in test cricket though. Right now, among Asian batsmen, I will rate him behind Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Sangakkara, Dravid and Miandad as a test bat but I expect him to end up in the same tier of Sanga, Dravid and Javed.
