I definitely wish to visit Chennai someday. It's been in my to-do list.

For tourists there are better places to visit in TN, feel free to tag me when you have plans of coming down South, can recommend some nice places as well as tourist traps to avoid.

I too would like to visit North East one day. In fact anywhere north of the Vindhyas.

Sure, man! All you got to do is give me a message. I'll be your guide in Guwahati.

But better places in Tamil Nadu than Chennai? What are they?

So many man. Chennai is so overrated when it comes to history, culture, architecture, cuisine.

Not to forget almost zero natural beauty in Chennai. Like other big cities in India, just a gigantic cluster of poorly planned ugly concrete structures, no breathing space, rubbish everywhere, stink, lack of greenery.

Marina beach is a disappointment, Vandalur zoo is overrated. Just a couple of cool temples/churches, decent museum, British era buildings. Come to Chennai only if you land a job, not as a tourist who wants to explore a different culture.

my childhood memories are visiting the majestic temples in Tamil nadu, of course karnataka has its share of historic temples.
I was especially mesmerised by kanyakumari and short journey to vivekananda memorial in Middle of Ocean

This is true of most metropolitan cities tbh, not specifically Chennai. Madras doesn't have a great history behind it like Thanjavur with the Chola legacy or Madurai with the Pandyan legacy. Perhaps the only thing historically relevant about Chennai is the Pallava architecture that's found in Mahabalipuram. Madras developed mainly because of its location near to the sea and it was developed as a port city by the British. It wasn't planned and built like Chandigarh, it developed because of its importance owing to its location and that's why it experienced haphazard development as opposed to maybe a planned city.

And Madurai is definitely the food capital of Tamil Nadu imo if you're talking about authentic tamil food, be it vegetarian or non vegetarian. But Chennai serves as a gateway to the tamil cuisine. You can find chettinad food here and also good quality vegetarian food. Even with biriyanis, the biriyani you found in south TN has short grain rice and a lot more spicy while the biriyani in the Arcot region has influences from its muslim past. In Chennai you can find all types of biriyanis that's common in TN and Chennai itself has a typical style of biriyani. And of course, there are the other styles like Hyderabadi, Bengali, Lucknowi, etc.

And the transport infrastructure is second to only Delhi maybe in India. Beaches obviously won't be first world standards but it's still good. There are also places to surf if you're into that. But it's not big on night life and pub culture. And I'll give you the climate, it's hot and humid almost always. But still Madras Madras thaan sir!:narine
