Which country has produced most number of quality batsman?

For me 1)OZ 2)IND 3)WI

In recent times, India and SA are factories producing talented batsmen. Hell saffer batsmen deploy their services to other countries to boot.

Australia without question. In recent times their batting looks weak but 7 years ago they boasted players like symonds, gilly, hayden, pnting, clarke, bevan, hussey, langer, katich. Even their no. 7 no.8 batsman where better btsman than BDeshi batsman....and gillespie who'se highest score in a test match will be greater than some of the present oz batsman

India didnt have too many top batsman in the past, only recently they are producing top batsman from every corner. So if you consider overall then Aus wins comfortably

Australian Batters have struggled on sub continents ...... this should be kept in mind.

I don't know about the number but hard to do better than:
Sobers
Richards
Lara

England and Australia, on account of having been around longer than the other teams.

Yes I agree with you with players like Sir jacobb hobbs, Sir hutton, Ken Barrington, Denis Compton, Ted Dexter, Wally hammods and many more but I would say one thing.......

England from 1970 and 2004 haven't produce a batsmen, who averages 45 obove odd except of bycott( till 1984) and Dennis Amiss(that till 1977)

This was the prime of cricket ....where world class bowler were present from every side.

Shame on England

Not quite. As a pure batsman, Stewart averaged 46. He had a fine record against WI, and Wasim & Waqar.

Then there were Gooch and Gower who are better than anything home-grown which England have at present. even though their averages are lower.

England without a doubt.

LOL at people completely ignoring them. :))

AUS

WI/INDIA

England havent produced a batsman who avgs 50 plus since late 60s i presume.and thats evident when you talk about English batsman who can make a World xi.They have to go all the way back and talk about Hobbs,Hutton and Co

If I had to pick one team I'd go for India in the last decade or two.

Tendulkar
Ganguly
Laxman
Dravid
Shewag

I would say that Aus, WI & SA would be right behind India though and if you are talking about 'in the history of cricket' then maybe even more then India

Pardon me Australia deserves to be in my list. hell their whole batting in late 90s and early 2000s was pure quality right down to #7

Yea in my mind it has to be Aus or Ind.

The reason I personally chose India was coz in the late 90's/2000's I feel Aus had a better batting line up over all - solid & consistent - whilst India had a few 'quality batsmen'.

But thats just my opinion :)

Batsmen aside, It's funny that India can't find or produce any quality bowlers, given such a large young male population.

In terms of sheer number. Australia followed by England because both have been around the longest.

In terms of quality batsmen/decade, a more accurate measurement. Probably Australia/Windies/Ind.

England would be just above above Kiwis/SL/ Zimbabwe (Flower atleast!)/ BD (none :( ).

Sure - India did not produce a world class batter before Gavaskar in 1970, while England had a production line of them since 1900.

Unless you count Prince Ranji and Duleep of course.

I'll have to say India>aust>england..
20 years ago story might have been different. But in last 20 years India has produced most number of high quality batsmen which has taken it ahead of others in all time quality batsmen production... Just look at their batsmen who are being overlooked and not even considered to be taken in the team..these days If a new indian batsmen doesnt perform from match 1 he is dropped straight away because they have ready replacements..

Vijay Hazare and Vijay merchant , infact Merchant has a first class average of 72

And if we were to access the batsmen from the last decade,

India,Australia,Sri Lanka(yes!)-South Africa...

Sangakkara has performed all over the world and Jayawardane is very underrated IMO! These two are definitely greats and are way better than Martyns, Yousufs, Trotts!

Jaya is better than MoYo and Martyn?

Then I guess you have no idea that Jaya averages 38 outside Galle and SSC.

Sangakkara sure is and Jayawardene, yes I know he doesn't have the stats to back him up but certainly I rate him very high

MoYo outclasses Jaya in England! But both are pretty equals in South Africa,Australia! But, given that Jayawardene still has few years to go, I'd expect him to improve in those territories as well!

NZ and WI also. Overall in away matches. Your post was in reply to claim that Jaya is not a FTB. He certainly is.

His form has gone down. Averages 34 in last 25 matches.

No way he is better than MoYo at least.

Fair comment - Merchant only played ten tests, Hazare thirty, and it would have been interesting to have seen how they did over longer careers.

Certainly, a lot of people are judging England by the players they produced in last 20 years only. They have given some great names to world Cricket overall.

Yes, WI have had some wonderful batsmen over the years including

Vivians Richard, George Headley, Lara, Sobers, Alan Walcott, Weekes, Frank Worrell,
Chanderpaul, Rohan Kanhai, Clive Lloyd, Sir Conrad Hunte, Alvin Kallicharan,
Gordin Greenidge, Richie Richardson, Lawrance Rowe and Desdmond Haynes

Australia
Ponting
Hayden
Steve Waugh
Hussey
Bevan
all were great and the ones who we actually got to watch not like English cricketers from last century.

Some of us are older than 12, you know...... none of those blokes were as good as Greg Chappell and Allan Border. Well, Tugga maybe.

but ponting and hayden will go down as one of better batsman in world cricket. I would rate this two as good greg and border. Not sure about bevan and hussey though

I don't think even Australian fans would consider Hayden as good as Greg and Border.

Hayden better than Border, Chappel brothers?! You gotta be kidding me!

Waugh brothers, Langer, Hayden, Punter, Martyn, Slater, Taylor, Gilchrist! What a golden generation of cricketers Australia had! Heck players like Bevan, Hodge, Hussey( late entrant) could not find a place in the side! One can measure the depths Australia have stooped to when they played North, Steven Smith as specialist batsmen!

They didn't have to face much in the way of bowling, though.

That misses out some big names like Graham Pollock, Vijay Hazare etc. and heavily favors FTB of recent years. Some 100 years back test matches b/w countries was not so common and first class cricket used to be the criteria to judge players.

Also by your criteria, a player averaging 50+ (like Border) has to play at least 100 innings or around 65+ test matches (for a good team).

If I use 40+ innings and 45+ average criteria I get

Australia (24 players):

DG Bradman, GS Chappell, RT Ponting, SR Waugh, ML Hayden, AR Border, MEK Hussey, MJ Clarke, RN Harvey, KD Walters, WH Ponsford, SJ McCabe, AC Gilchrist, WM Lawry, RM Cowper, RB Simpson, AL Hassett, DM Jones, AR Morris, DR Martyn, WM Woodfull, NC O'Neill, JL Langer, SM Katich

England (16 players):

H Sutcliffe, KF Barrington, WR Hammond, JB Hobbs, L Hutton, IJL Trott, DCS Compton, KP Pietersen, ER Dexter, AN Cook, G Boycott, EH Hendren, IR Bell, PBH May, DL Amiss, M Leyland

West Indies (12 players):

GA Headley, ED Weekes, GS Sobers, CL Walcott, BC Lara, IVA Richards, S Chanderpaul, FMM Worrell, SM Nurse, RB Kanhai, CH Lloyd, CC Hunte

South Africa (9 players):

RG Pollock, JH Kallis, AD Nourse, GC Smith, HM Amla, B Mitchell, AB de Villiers, EJ Barlow, G Kirsten

India (7 players):

SR Tendulkar, R Dravid, SM Gavaskar, V Sehwag, VS Hazare, VVS Laxman, M Azharuddin

Pakistan (7 players):

Javed Miandad, Mohammad Yousuf, Younis Khan, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Misbah-ul-Haq, Saeed Anwar, Azhar Ali :))

Srilanka (3 players):

KC Sangakkara, TT Samaraweera, DPMD Jayawardene

New Zealand (1 player):

GM Turner

If the criteria is 4000 runs and 45+ average then

Then 16 From australia
12 from England
7 from WI
6 from India
5 from Pakistan
5 from SA
3 from SL
1 from NZ and Zimbawe each.

Some of the above parameters include Ian Bell.

Really? Why would you ever include him?

Really? Why would you ever include him?

because he has maintained a very good average of 47 for over 80 test matches.

He may not be one of greatest England batsmen produced but he is quality batsmen.

better than most of England batsmen produced from 1980 to 2004, if you are going by stats
