It is really wrong to make average of 45+ or 40+and aggregate of 4,000 + a criteria. To me there are so many batsman who have averaged below 45 and not aggregated over 4000 runs and were truly great .95% of my list have averaged more than forty and have aggregated more than 4,000 runs,or even over 7,000 and 8,000 runs.Amongst very good players a few did not even average 40 or aggregate over 5,000 runs like Victor Trumper,Vijay Manjrekar,Asif Iqbal or Majid Khan. Imagine not counting Gordon Greenidge,Ian Chappell,Colin Cowdrey,Majid Khan,Graham Gooch,David Gower ,Gundappa Vishwanath or Martin Crowe as quality batsman.
I will always count the following batsman who averaged less than 45 runs .
1.England-Colin Cowdrey,David Gower, and Graham Gooch.Gooch had a phenomenal aggregate of 8900 runs and mastered the great West Indian pace attack, while Cowdrey and Gower were masters against pace bowling. All scored over 7,000 runs.
2.Pakistan-Zaheer Abbas was the best batsman on flat tracks scoring 2 double centuries in England,Hanif Mohammad the ultimate technician and batsman to register mammoth scores including 337.v West Indies on their soil,,Salim Malik often the champion in a crisis while Majid Khan and Asif Iqbal mastered great pace attacks of Australia and West Indies.Majid and Asif averaged around 38.5 but performed like batsman who would have averaged around 45.
3.India-Gundappa Vishwanath was the best batting match-winner for India till then while Dilip Vengsarkar and Mohinder Amarnath mastered great West Indian bowling attacks.Amarnath handled the great Carribean attack better than any batsman in 1983 in the West Indies. From 1986-87 Vengsarkar was the best batsman in the world. He scored 3 consecutive centuries at Lords.Vijay Manjrekar was never flattered by stats while Polly Umrigar could literally bat for his life.
4.Australia-Victor Trumper was a better batsman than even Bradman on wet tracks and arguably the ultimate genius. He averaged 39 runs.Although Ian Chappell averaged 42, in a crisis he was the best batsman of the 1970's.At one dowm he average over 50 runs.Mark Waugh,at his best was in the Lara -Tendulkar class and a great match-winner.David Boon was ever consistent.Stan Mcabe was the greatest batsman against bodyline bowling.
5.New Zealand-Martin Crowe was in the Greg Chappell class who Wasim Akram found more difficult to bowl to than Tendulkar or Lara.
6.Sri Lanka-Aravinda de Silva was a great batsman in a crisis and a great match-winner with more ability than Jayewardene or Sangakaara.
7.West Indies-Gordon Greenidge is one of the greatest opening batsman of all time who at his peak was close to Viv Richards. Desmond Haynes,Alvin Kalicharann and Lawrence Rowe were all in the classical mould at their best.
If you make 45+ a criteria then you eliminate all these batsman. If you make 40+ a criteria then great talents like MajidKhan ,Asif Iqbal , Vijay Manjrekar or a genius like Victor Trumper get eliminated.
