What's new

Which nation has produced the most Test greats?

Pakistan have 8 in my opinion but overall it would be Australia followed by West Indies.
1. Imran Khan
2. Javed Miandad
3. Zaheer Abbas
4. Wasim Akram
5. Waqar Younis
6. Saeed Anwar
7. Hanif Mohammed
8. Fazal Mahmood

If Rabada is an ATG then so was Mohammad Asif who btw was a far superior bowler.

Honestly, what Mohammad Asif did in England 2010 steals away limelight of anything he has done over the course of 25 tests. It is a very unfortunate thing if you are on Asif side in a discussion between Kagiso and Asif. Anyone would prefer to be Kagiso than be Asif.

I didn't know ethical and moral integrity was such a fundamental requirement to be classified as an All Time Great.
Thought we were talking about cricketing accomplishments here and by that token Asif was leagues ahead.

I am also talking about cricketing accomplishments only. Match fixing is a cricket thing only. I am not talking about Asif's non-cricketing life. Also, he played 25 tests only, that doesn't help either.

Rabada is not done and there is no reason he won't go on and play many more matches.

It's all about extrapolation then. I do believe he has all the ingredients to become an atg fast bowler but it's too early to start including him in the lists since one never know what future holds for everyone.

You have missed Younis Khan. If Indians can claim Dravid as an ATG then YK is ATG too.

Real ATGs

Pakistan

Imran
Wasim
Waqar
Miandad
Zaheer Abbas
Fazal Mehmood
Saeed Anwar
Saqlain
Akhtar
Yousuf
Younis
Inzimam
Asif (but for ban)
Amir (potential)
Babar (getting there)

India

Sachin (though he lost but longevity ensured he is ATG.

Noone else from India is ATG as Kapil was useless compared to Imran and is equivalent to Srinath in bowling and Azhar Mehmood in batting.

There could have been a case for Dravid as being ATG but the performances of Inzimam in ODIs are far greater while in Tests Yousuf is comfortably better by scoring most runs in a calendar year.

Sachin barely makes it.

Sincerely.

A very lame attempt at trolling.

Sehwag is an all time great? This guy does not have one century in second innings, no technique and he is supposed to be an all time great.

Seems the bar is set very low

I haven't included Chandra and Kumble since some people might object to it considering their inflated averages.
MMHS Junaids Robert Mamoon Do you think both of them could be considered as ATGs of the game?

AUS has produced the highest numbers of ATGs by some margin - every generation they have produced an ATG. Even in this bankrupt days of Aussie cricket, they have Steve Smith, who is destined for ATG status, Cummins can end up as another one.

Kumble's volume speaks for himself, but he is a shed below the ATG grade, because of his skewed performance on a particular type of wicket, something similar to Ashwin as well. Chanda was a freak - not complete bowler but on his day unplayable. I rank both of them the category of Underwood or Anderson; probably that explains better.

Pujara has much higher chances but even then I won't go so far as to call him one since longevity is a ****** and one never know. Ask Amla.

Given that he won his country a series in Australia, he will forever be an ATG.

If Kapil was useless in batting what was Imran Khan, he was tailender for most of his career.

Forgot about him. So that os 9.
Inzi as an overall batsmen was way ahead of Dravid and VVS, and Younis ahead of VVS but on par with Dravid.

Saeed Anwar = ATG? In test?

Yet you didn't include Inzamam. Who has twice the runs, centuries and bigger average. Hmmm!!

Pakistan had these greats,
Hanif,Zaheer,Javed, Imran, Wasim , Waqar ,Inzi . I am relucant to add Younis.

India
Vinoo, Sunil,Kapil,Sachin, Dravid, Sehwag, Kumble and Kohli is already an ATG.

The criteria is bowling avg of 25 or less and batting of 50 or more.

Australia, England, Pakistan and South Africa will obviously be the stand outs here.

I personally think the original criteria of a minimum of 20 tests is too few. It should be 30-40 tests or more by modern standards.

An average of 49.34 at an SR of 82.23

Kindly name us one player in 150 years of Test cricket history who has a combination of such an average and SR. Come on, just one player would do.

P.S. He does not have 1 century in 2nd innings of Tests? Which game do you follow?

How could I miss him lol.
So that makes 10. I am judging players with ability to play both forms of games. Saeed excelled in ODIs and was good in tests as well, despite bei g selected late and having personal tragedies

Kapil and Shakib are good players, but they arguably do not belong in this list because the former doesn't really compare favourably with Hadlee, Imran, and Sobers, while the latter is only a great for his nation, not internationally. I'd probably add Hanif Mohammad, Fazal Mahmood, and Inzamam-ul-Haq for Pakistan.

Where did you saw that?

Kapil was an undisputed ATG without any shadow of doubt and it's not even up for debate. He was the better ODI A-R of the quartet.

Shakib has 600+ runs in a World Cup, winning his team matches Vs West Indies and South Africa. A great in tests as well.

Hanif and Inzamam were very good players but not ATGs.

lol at rabada being a ATG. No bowler can be an ATG if he dint perform everywhere. many other players need to be removed from that list.
atleast shewag performed vs australia and England. But rabada lmao.
why don't we put philander there as well?

why don't we put ashwin there too if stats is all that matters.

We're purely talking about Test greats at the moment.

The arguement is subjective although it's quite evident one of England/Australia would be taking this as they have produced a great of a few of them across all generations. West Indies had a good run for 3-4 decades but they haven't produced any great for a long time now.

I suggest you look at Inzis test numbers not his ODI numbers

It has to be Australia.

They are the most successful cricket nation statistically and they also have the most all-time greats.

The greatest cricketing nation of them all, Australia.

Smith, Lyon, and Cummins could be added to the list of test greats. Truly the greatest cricketing nation.

England for me:

Alastair Cook
W.G Grace
Jack Hobbs
Boycott
Gower
Botham
KP
Flintoff
Bob Willis
Jimmy Anderson
Stuart Broad
Fred Trueman
Joe Root
Darren Gough

TBC in Future:

Sir Jofra
Butler
Curran
Woakes

pre world cup era shouldn't count whatsoever. Post 1980 is when we saw more than 4 teams compete on a regular basis.

So Aussies first I think,
Aussies first regardless.

2) west indies

3) s.africa

4) india

5) pakistan

6) England

don't give a Damn about the rest. Top 6.

Lol, Lyon is painfully mediocre compared to the true ATGs.

From Non-Asian sides, I may be missing few or skipping some of oldies as I don't know.

Australia:-

Bradman, Smith, Ponting, Chappell, Border, S Waugh, Gilchrist

McGrath, Lillee, Miller, Davidson, Warne

South Africa:-

G Pollock, B Richards, Kallis, AB de Villiers

Donald, Steyn, Pollock, M Proctor, Rabada

England:-

Hobbs, Hutton, Hammond, Sutcliffe, Barrington, KP

Barnes, Trueman, Botham, Stokes

West Indies:-

Lara, Sobers, Richards, Headley

Marshall, Ambrose, Garner, Holding, Walsh, Roberts

New Zealand:-

Willliamson

Hadlee
